We are back again, proving once and for all that What's New to Netflix is the ultimate Netflix podcast, especially when it comes to telling you all of the new titles coming to Netflix in April 2025! Then it's Tom Hiddleston in a J. G. Ballard adaptation of madness, destruction, and paint in High-Rise, directed by Ben Wheatley from 2015. Next, Emily Blunt has to do some very unethical things in order to bring a drug cartel down, with the help of Benecio del Toro and Josh Brolin in Sicario, directed by Denis Villeneuve, from 2015. And then we get into The Russo Brothers' The Electric State from 2025. Is it as bad as people say it is? Can Millie Bobby Brown and Chris Pratt salvage this movie, or is this one for the scrap heap? All of this plus the shocking absence of comedy specials and reality shows and the return of Black Mirror and You. got a suggestion for the show?: whatsnewtonetflix@gmail.com

Producer Dan Levine recalls the making of 2016's iconic Arrival. From the moment he read Ted Chiang's Story of Your Life, Dan knew he had to find a way to bring it to the screen. Director Denis Villeneuve, an incredible talent but still relatively unknown, was the perfect choice. Producers had to wait until Denis wrapped Sicario, but things moved quickly once Amy Adams came on board and suggested Jeremy Renner as her co-star. Production went smoothly, although the material presented endless challenges for Denis and the producers. The scariest moment was after the finished film was screened for the studio - they did not like it and wanted rewrites and a reshoot to change the ending. Dan knew the film worked and fought for the ending that garnered 8 Oscar nominations. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Kiwi musician Blair Jollands has made a name for himself overseas. He works as a sound designer and composer in the film industry, as well as creating and releasing his own music. Jollands has a wide range of film credits, but some of the most popular he left his mark on are Poldark, Shackleton, Midas Man, and Alien vs Predator. He's worked with a wide range of stars, including Madonna and Rhianna, and won praise from the late David Bowie and Boy George. ‘Little Comet' is his fourth album, which he recently released under his own name after performing under the pseudonym ‘El Hula'. Jollands left New Zealand in 1995, spending awhile in the United States before winding up in the UK, where he's remained since. He told Mike Hosking that getting a job in sound design at the time was very much a right time, right place situation. “I was a coffee barista, and I thought y'know, I really need to get something that pays a little bit more to help my music along.” “So I actually walked in and gave them my CV, and a week later they said ‘will you come in because we had three people just, they've been headhunted and they've gone to another studio.'” Although sound design and music production may seem like different areas, Jolland says these days the line between them is really fine. “For example, the late Jóhann Jóhannsson, for say, his movie ‘Sicario', it's, I find it very hard to establish what is music and what is sound design – it's very tonal, it's not as harmonic, less melodic.” “But generally speaking, sound design is more organic, and we capture sounds and manipulate them.” LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

On today's episode, Vince sits down with Pierre Rausini. Pierre Rausini is an author and former Los Angeles kingpin. He was charged with operating a criminal enterprise under the Federal Drug Kingpin Statute and prosecuted for participating in wide-ranging drug conspiracies. Rausini's extensive history of drug trafficking in Southern California throughout the 1990s involved direct collaboration with high-level Sinaloa operatives who managed the cartel's American-based distribution network and its money laundering operation. This experience provided him with an intimate understanding of the cartel's logistics and operational strategies.   Rausini was released last year after serving twenty-six years in federal prison. His incarceration allowed him to live alongside and develop deep relationships with high-ranking members of both the Sinaloa and Jalisco New Generation cartels, including several of their drug lords. This unique position enabled him to gain profound insights into the mindset, decision-making process, and cultural dynamics of these individuals. Rausini's first-hand knowledge of how cartel leaders think and operate offers a level of insight that is simply unattainable through traditional intelligence-gathering methods. Rausini has been invited to speak before law enforcement groups as a subject-matter expert and he appears on social media, commenting on matters relating to drug trafficking, money laundering, and cartel intrigue.  To learn more about Pierre's story, check out: Devil Exposed: A Twisted Tale of Drug Trafficking, Corruption & Murder in the City of Angels Borderland is an IRONCLAD Original Learn more about your ad choices. Season's greetings, Script Apart listeners. As you may have noticed, it's the last week before Christmas – the year's coming to an end, and so, we figured, let's end 2024 strong. So all this week, on this podcast about the first draft secrets of great movies and TV shows – interviews with the writers behind some of the best movies of the last twelve months that we didn't manage to cover upon release. And holy prince of House Atreides, what a way to begin today. Our guest today made one of the most pulse-racing crime thrillers of the century so far, in the form of 2015's Sicario. He's made one of the greatest movies about the power of language of all-time, in 2016's Arrival. And in 2017 and 2021, he took on the impossible twice – crafting first a sequel to one of the greatest blockbusters ever, in the shape of Blade Runner 2049, and then a movie adaptation of a novel previously thought unfilmable: Frank Herbert's Dune. Yes, the great Denis Villneueve is with us today, stopping by for a chat about how his gargantuan Dune: Part Two – starring Timothee Chalamet and Zendeya – helped define 2024. Not just in the way it dominated the box office, earning almost three quarters of a billion dollars (which by the way, is not bad for a hallucinatory epic full of spice-induced visual experimentation). No, it's reflective of the year just passed because notions of fascism, faith, false messiahs… these have all been uncomfortable parts of the backdrop of 2024.In the conversation you're about to hear, Al had thirty minutes to ask Denis his most probing questions about the script. Questions like: was there ever a moment in the making of Dune: Part Two when he contemplated keeping Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen – played by Austin Butler – alive to explore in further films? What does the ending of the film, which veers away from Frank Herbert's source material, mean for the future of the franchise? And if Dune: Part Two is a film that warns about colonialism and facism, does he believe that cinema has the power to actually dismantle those structures, or is just about expressing a kinda howl of resistance?Script Apart is hosted by Al Horner and produced by Kamil Dymek. There's a new “melancholy Christmas musical” to add to your list of indie film favorites, and when we had a chance to see an advance screening, we immediately knew that this story was YOUR kind of story. A hard-working, veteran singer-songwriter is trying to make it through to the end of another long year, wondering if it is time to lay down the dream. Boy does this one strike close to home.   Long December marks the acting debut of Stephen Williams of the band Jude Moses and sideman for the John Mark McMillan band. (McMillan also has a very convincing role in the film.) The film co-stars Charley Koontz (“Community,” “The Boys”), Emily Althaus (“Orange is the New Black,” “Handmaid's Tale”), and Maximiliano Hernandez (“Avengers: Endgame,” “Sicario”). The soundtrack is available on all streaming platforms right now, and the film premiers on VOD platforms on November 12th.   Join JJT as he sits down with writer/director Thomas Torrey to hear about the origin of the story, the music, and the production.
