Another week, another brand new cycle of 66 Degrees of Sound, our podcast highlighting new music and events in Iceland. This week kicks off this week with an artist spotlight on Dustin O'Halloran, the renown American pianist, producer, and composer who now lives in Iceland. Dustin released his latest solo album 1 0 0 1 on March 22 along with the video single “Spiritus Naturae Aeternus”, featuring a spellbinding choreography and performance by dancer Fukiko Takase. We sat down with him for a buoyant and insightful discussion about his new release, the way the ideas took form and placed themselves in context, the nature of humanity and the role of artistry alongside the rise of AI, and just some good ol' fashioned banter. Due to some technical issues, the interview is conducted solely by Jói in this episode, with Rex takin' care of business in the wings.Watch the video for Dustin O'Halloran's “Spiritus Naturae Aeternus ", released on January 31.Official website: https://dustinohalloran.com/Instagram: @dustinohalloranFacebook: Dustin O'HalloranX: @DustinOHalloranA Winged Victory For The Sullen: https://awvfts.com/66 Degrees of Sound is a podcast production by The Reykjavík Grapevine, hosted by music editor Jóhannes Bjarkason and listings editor Rex Beckett.Editing and intro music by Rex Beckett. All tracks played on the show are in accordance with STEF, the Composers' Rights Society of Iceland.Check out grapevine.is for the full magazine coverage and events.grapevine.is for more upcoming events. And I think that wisdom for me is so connected to nature and the information that we get from nature. We ultimately are part of the natural world. So it was about trying to get into the picture and what would really work with the scenes, but also to sometimes just put it away and just really get to the heart of the film, too, because there was a big overarching feeling to the film. The feeling of home and the feeling of being connected to your mother and this cosmic connection that was calling him to find her. So there was a moment of getting into really taking these bits that we'd been working on outside of looking at the picture and then making them work inside the picture, which is a lot of work. It's actually hard to kind of take something, and then you have to fit it into a box. Because film is a bit of a box. It has limitations, and there's time. It has to hit marks. "The thing that with nature that I think is most profound is that it's always truthful. And I think that that's something that always resonates with me. Whenever I'm in raw nature, there's just an undeniable truth and a sense of how it's supposed to be. And that's just something that's so resonating in nature, the sense of wholeness and connectedness. When I'm writing music, I don't think I'm ever specifically trying to capture any of these moments specifically. I think it's just the way your mind works when you're in nature and the way you're able to hear yourself and peace, really. So, for me, there's always this very strong connection to creativity in nature."Dustin O'Halloran is a pianist and composer and member of the band A Winged Victory for the Sullen. I think it's just the way your mind works when you're in nature and the way you're able to hear yourself and peace, really. So, for me, there's always this very strong connection to creativity in nature."https://dustinohalloran.com/www.deutschegrammophon.com/en/artists/dustin-o-halloranwww.imdb.com/name/nm0641169/bio/?ref_=nm_ov_bio_smMusic courtesy of Dustin O'Halloran and Deutsche Grammophonwww.creativeprocess.infowww.oneplanetpodcast.orgIG www.instagram.com/creativeprocesspodcast

What will happen when Artificial General Intelligence arrives? What is the nature of consciousness? How are music and creativity pathways for reconnecting us to our humanity and the natural world?Dustin O'Halloran is a pianist and composer and member of the band A Winged Victory for the Sullen. Like, what are we? What are we bringing to humanity, to the human story? And I think it's interesting because a lot of artists now are concerned about it. What is the value of our consciousness? Consciousness has been something that I've been reading about. It's a vastly understudied part of science, and it's going to become very, very relative very quickly. And I think that it's getting to the core of creativity. What is creativity and ultimately where do we want to go? How are we going to connect with each other?"It started as a dance piece with choreographer dancer Fukiko Takase. And we had met when I was doing a dance piece with Wayne McGregor with another project that I do called the Winged Victory for the Sullen. We did a piece called Atomos, and Fukiko was one of Wayne's principal dancers. And I just loved how she was able to express in movement. It was a very profound experience to realize how connected music is to dance, this sense of communication without words, and how it gets elevated when you bring dance and movement into music."https://dustinohalloran.com/www.deutschegrammophon.com/en/artists/dustin-o-halloranwww.imdb.com/name/nm0641169/bio/?ref_=nm_ov_bio_smMusic courtesy of Dustin O'Halloran and Deutsche Grammophonwww.creativeprocess.infowww.oneplanetpodcast.orgIG www.instagram.com/creativeprocesspodcast

We're almost in this hybrid space, not fully understanding where it's going. And it's very deep in our subconscious and probably much greater than we realize. And it sort of ends in this space where the consciousness of what we're creating, it's going to be very separate from us. While Apple TV+ is home to some of the biggest shows on TV -- your Teds Lasso, your Severances -- some of its best, most beguiling shows and miniseries don't get talked about nearly as often. Among those hidden gems is The Essex Serpent, the six-part adaptation of the novel by Sarah Perry, starring Claire Danes and Tom Hiddleston. Set in turn-of-the-century England, The Essex Serpent follows Cora Seaborne (Danes), a recently widowed Londoner, who sees her newfound freedom as the perfect excuse to pursue her love of science. That pursuit takes her to the Essex countryside, where a small town has been besieged by what's been reported to be a massive serpent. Some, including the town pastor (played by Hiddleston), doubt its veracity, but the town itself is convinced, and Cora's arrival just puts more fuel on the fire. It's a scintillating, romantic, deeply textured series about the thin lines between science and mysticism, and the reasons we might believe in one or the other. Aiding the show's foggy atmosphere is its beguiling score courtesy of Oscar-nominated composer Dustin O'Halloran and Icelandic composer Herdis Stefánsdóttir -- a heady mix of string combos and acoustics, blended with textured sounds that evoke the rush of sea air and the twist of rope. There are shades of O'Halloran's score for Ammonite, which we've spoken to him on the pod about before, mixed with a tinge of the fantastic as airy instrumentals give way to darker, moodier modes. I sat down with Dustin and Herdis to talk about all these elements and more. You can find Dustin O'Halloran and Herdis Stefansdottir at their official websites. The Essex Serpent is streaming in its entirety on Apple TV+. You can also listen to the score on your preferred music streaming service courtesy of Apple Music.
Studio Soundtracks takes listeners behind the scenes of how music is crafted for film and television by hearing directly from composers, songwriters and music professionals in the Entertainment Industry. Listen to inspiring conversations about composition and hear works from Emmy, Grammy, and Oscar-winning film scores on the show. Herdís Stefánsdóttir is a composer of music for multimedia, a songwriter, and an electronic musician. Her compositional endeavors — installations in museums, dance, theatre, and a successful electronic music duet she is a part of – are establishing her as an expansive artist. Herdís Stefánsdóttir graduated with an M.A. degree in film scoring from New York University in 2017. Since graduation she has scored two feature films, an HBO series and a few short films. She won the 2022 Icelandic Music Award for her score to the FX series Y: the Last Man and was also nominated for her score in Ry Russo-Young's MGM/Warner Bros. feature film The Sun Is Also a Star. Her other scoring work includes the HBO series We're Here, and in 2022 she co-scored Apple TV+'s Essex Serpent with Dustin O'Halloran, starring Claire Daines and Tom Hiddleston. Dustin O'Halloran is an American pianist and composer with four acclaimed solo albums under his own name, and a member of the band A Winged Victory for the Sullen. Winner of a 2015 Emmy Award for his main title theme to Amazon's comedy drama Transparent, he was also nominated for an Oscar, a Golden Globe, a BAFTA, and a Critics' Choice Award for his score to 2016's Lion, written in collaboration with Volker Bertelmann (aka Hauschka). O'Halloran's film career began when Sofia Coppola invited him to contribute to 2006's Marie Antoinette, and since then he's worked on multiple films and TV shows, including Drake Doremus' Sundance Grand Jury Prize winner, Like Crazy (2011), and Marc Turtletaub's Puzzle (2018), where he collaborated with veteran Scandinavian chart-topper Ane Brun for the film's closing song. In 2018, he scored George Tillman Jr.'s The Hate U Give and joined forces with Bryan Senti for Nick Murphy's six-part Sky TV series, Save Me, while he and Bertelmann also reconvened that year for Netflix's The Old Guard, starring Charlize Theron. He and Bertelmann continue to collaborate, scoring the BBC's 2019 adaptation of Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol.

Dustin O'Halloran is an American pianist and composer with five acclaimed solo albums under his own name. He released his first EP Sundoor with renowned classical musical label Deutsche Grammophon in 2019, and followed that up with his solo album Silfur in 2021. He's also a member of the band A Winged Victory for the Sullen with Adam Wiltzie, and they released their album The Undivided Five with Ninja Tune in 2019 and self-released their latest album Invisible Cities in 2021. He's the winner of a 2015 Emmy Award for his main title theme to Amazon's comedy drama Transparent (2014–2017), and was nominated for an Oscar, a Golden Globe, a BAFTA and a Critics Choice Award for his score to Lion (2016), written in collaboration with Volker Bertelmann (aka Hauschka). We get into many topics such as the old analog vs digital debat, habits at the piano, inner timing, the music of Hans Otte, the power of the ocean, icelandic breakfast, how to record the piano, working to picture and much more :) ________ In the nitty I recreate the magical oscillator offset that's found in the wonderful and soon to be legendary Yamaha CS70. It was inspired by this video of floating points in his studio, demonstrating this very thing. It's been a treat to remake in software and I run down how it was done. The most important piece of the puzzle was scaling the pitch wheel (actually 2 pitch wheels) to not be smooth but quantized to the intervals used in the CS70. To do this I used a Max for live device called “Bend Sequence” from Heaps of Bleeps. I really think this series is tremendous. I wasn't aware of his work but it's some great max programming and works so well. Here's the link to all his stuff :) _________ Music in this episode comes from BAPHONYM - from the LP STILLFACE which you can find here: https://mondegreensoho.bandcamp.com/album/stillface Please send your musical submissions to lidellmakeswaves@gmail.com I love to hear them! ____ Other links : Mylar Melodies deep dive into the Orchestron link here The music of Hans Otte link here ( this is not the album but rather a live performance)

The Oscar and Grammy-nominated Dustin O'Halloran has seen his nomadic life take him from his native Los Angeles to Italy, Berlin, to now spending the entire pandemic in his new home of Iceland. The last time Headliner caught up with O'Halloran, he was desperate to return to his hugely popular solo compositions, having spent the last decade working on films such as Lion, and most recently Netflix's The Old Guard and the Kate Winslet/Saoirse Ronan-starring Ammonite. And with his first album release on Deutsche Grammophon, Silfur, we discuss him revisiting his beloved older material, with some stunning new pieces also.

1. Fossils 5'40” 2 Strong Enough 1'45” 4 Leave 2'31” 5 Boat 2'39” 6 Post 2'40” 8 End 2'43” 9 Aria 2'00”
Tim Husom - Redbird Music In this episode, we shift gears a bit and explore the world of film/TV composers with my friend Tim Husom, who’s Redbird Music represents some of today’s top composers, including Dustin O'Halloran, Colin Stetson and the estate of Johann Johansson, to name a few. We discuss how his early days managing indie rock and electronic bands, married with the economic downturn of 2008, inspired him to lean into film and TV opportunities for his artists, which lead to his unique path towards redefining Red Bird as a home for orchestral, ambient and avant-garde music. His artists have won and been nominated for Academy Awards, Golden Globe Awards, Critics Choice Awards, Emmys, BAFTAs and Grammys. I hope you enjoy my chat with Tim
Dustin O'Halloran & Volker Bertelmann were in high demand following their Oscar nomination for their work on the 2016 film "Lion." The two would go off to do their own projects while occasionally re-teaming for another film score now and then. Dustin O'Halloran would go on to work with Francis Lee on "God's Own Country," and now he's back with Volker to work with Francis Lee again on his latest film "Ammonite." Clarice Jensen, the composer, cellist, and Artistic Director with the Brooklyn-based ACME — that’s the American Contemporary Music Ensemble — has a new cassette release out via Geographic North, titled Drone Studies. The two pieces that make up this release, titled “The Organ that Made You Bleed” and “One Bee” show off an improvisational and naturally expressive tonal exploration that veers away from the compositional works she’s created with ACME, and via collaborations with artists such as Jóhann Jóhannsson, Max Richter, A Winged Victory for the Sullen, Dustin O’halloran, Stars of the Lid, and more. Host Chad Radford met up with Jensen and Jonathan Turner at Knoxville, Tennessee’s Big Ears festival in March of 2019, where they discussed these two side-long pieces and their relationship to her body of work. On the heals of the last mix, which was sort of modern classical, comes another neo-classical type mix. I started collecting tunes for this mix after I heard Alva Noto's "Argonaut Version" in a Quiet Sounds mix. I like that song & wanted it to find a home in a mix. Speaking of Quiet Sounds, there are some excellent mixes available for download there. I wish Brian would crank them out more often. I stole the title for this mix from a song by The Tumbled Sea, which is next to last in the mix. It just sounded like a good title & it fit with the crappy weather we've been having here. The mix ends with a sort syrupy tune from Anthony Phillips. It may be a bit too sweet but it's one of those tunes that I have always liked, goes back to college days. i don't know if I was hearing it for the first time now, whether I would like it as much. I'm sure a big part of the song's attraction is it's nostalgic significance. Anthony Phillips is the original guitarist for Genesis and back in high school & college I was a HUGE Genesis fan. Actually I still am, but that was how I came to Phillips' music back then. It was nice to sneak that track into a mix. Make some tea or coffee & enjoy "songs for staying in".
