Richard Sennett: THE ART OF SOCIAL AND POLITICAL PERFORMANCE - ACTORS, DEMAGOGUES, SELF-PROMOTERS

Robert Misik in conversation with Richard SennettTHE ART OF SOCIAL AND POLITICAL PERFORMANCE: ACTORS, DEMAGOGUES, SELF-PROMOTERS In his new book, world-famous sociologist and author Richard Sennett dissects the performer – in the German edition called „Der darstellende Mensch“. Sennett, who was a musician and artist before his extraordinary academic career, focuses on theatre and the emancipatory potential of art. But isn't today's dominant social character is also the performing human in a broader sense, curating his or her life, whether in social media or in the roles that he or she has to play? And doesn't the show character of politics give rise to a certain type of politician? Sennett's latest study also provides an opportunity to talk about the big picture of half a century of research. It has been 53 years since Sennett's first legendary work, ‘The Hidden Injuries of Class', was published, which reads as relevant today as ever – followed by ‘The Fall of the Public Man', ‘The Corrosion of Character', ‘On Craftsmanship' and many other works, that deal with the interactions between individuals, identity and society. Taken together, they describe the transformation of the subjects through socialisation, as well as the alienation in neoliberalism, but at the same time they always open windows onto the utopian, onto a non-reified, communal existence.Richard Sennett grew up in the Cabrini Green housing project in Chicago, attended the Julliard School in New York and then studied social relations at Harvard. Over the last five decades, he has written about social life in cities, changes in labour and social theory. His books include The Hidden Injuries of Class , The Fall of Public Man , The Corrosion of Character , The Culture of the New Capitalism , The Craftsman and Building and Dwelling . Sennett has advised the United Nations on urban issues for the past thirty years and currently serves as member of the UN Committee on Urban Initiatives. He is Visiting Professor of Urban Studies at Harvard. Among other awards, he has received the Hegel Prize, the Spinoza Prize and the Centennial Medal from Harvard University.Robert Misik, Author and Journalist

Hillary Simms is a virtuosic Canadian trombone player with the esteemed American Brass Quintet and is on faculty at the Julliard School. Hillary's warmth and love of music comes through in this candid interview, from her childhood in Newfoundland to playing on the world's biggest stages, and also the unusual situation she found herself in when  her engagement to her husband became a viral sensation in China.  As the first woman to join the Amercian Brass Quintet since 1960,  Hillary spoke to me about gender disparity in the brass world and some of her strong female role models.    Hillary shares wonderful insights for all of us, whether you pursue music as a career or follow a different path,  of the need to have self-compassion and have an awareness of the big picture of your life.  Hillary has performed as a soloist a couple of times with my orchestra, Canada's National Arts Centre Orchestra, and you'll hear us talk about the arc of her career so far as a chamber musician, soloist, educator and busy freelancer. We decided to delay the release of this episode slightly in order to include a wonderful recent recording of the Amercian Brass Quintet, a movement from David Biedenbender's wonderful work Sacred Geometry. He passed away on June 1st 2000. Here's a glimpse into his remarkable journey and some of the things each day this week we'll dive into.Early Years: Tito Puente was born in New York City's Spanish Harlem to Puerto Rican parents. His father worked at a razorblade factory, and Tito initially took piano lessons. However, an ankle injury led him to switch to percussion, drawing inspiration from jazz drummer Gene Krupa. Puente's talent blossomed with his drumming lessons, and in the '40s he joined the Machito Orchestra when their drummer was drafted for World War II. This was his big break, and Puente played with them until he was also drafted into the Navy. After the war, Puente went to the Julliard School of Music on the G.I. Bill to study music and orchestration, and in 1948 he formed his own band and began developing his distinctive performance style.Career:  Tito Puente was known for his blending of Latin and jazz sounds, for placing percussion in the spotlight, and for celebrating the music with dancing and joy during his performances. His band became a regular sound at the Palladium Ballroom, where the Tito Puente Orchestra packed in the crowds and helped popularize mambo. Over the years he became known as "El Rey," the king of mambo music, and he collaborated with many other major performers, including Celia Cruz. Puente began recording with RCA Victor in the 1950s. He continued to record, collaborate, and perform for the next several decades. In the 1990s, he played himself in the movie, Mambo Kings, which helped drive a renewed awareness of his music. When he died at age 77, he was still regularly performing.Legacy: Tito Puente's influence transcends borders. His compositions continue to resonate, and his virtuosity lives on. Whether you're dancing to his beats or appreciating his melodies, Tito Puente's legacy has been recognized in many ways. He received five Grammy Awards during his lifetime, as well as a posthumous Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award; among other honors, he also received honorary degrees, presidential recognition, and the Key to New York City.Tune in tomorrow for part 2 of celebrating the life and music of Tito Puente.Support the show

Welcome to Season Five of Countermelody! While I indulge in a much-needed break for the month of January (my first in four years!), I have asked a number of Countermelody fans and listeners to provide spoken introductions to some of their favorite episodes from the first three seasons of the podcast. Today conductor Brian Castles-Onion introduces an episode from June 2020, as we neared the height of the pandemic and the panic surrounding it. It is an interview with Ira Siff, artistic director of La Gran Scena Opera Company di New York, alter ego of the beloved “traumatic soprano” Vera Galupe-Borszkh, lecturer for the Metropolitan Opera Guild and Weekly Commentator on the Metropolitan Opera broadcasts. So much has changed for everyone since the interview was recorded in January 2020, most poignantly (as relates to this episode) the death of our beloved Chic Walker (who portrayed Dame Emily Post-Morddum and Alfredo Sorta-Pudgi in La Gran Scena) on 11 April 2022; and the passing of Renata Scotto on 16 August 2023. My association with Ira Siff and La Gran Scena Opera Company di New York goes back more than thirty years, when Ira provided me with my first employment as a professional singer when my alter ego Daniela della Scarpone sang for two years with the renowned travesty opera company. I sat down with Ira in his East Village apartment in January 2020 for a wide-ranging interview in which we discuss his early days as a standee at the old Met (where some of his opera-going experiences included Maria Callas's final Tosca performances, Renata Scotto's 1965 debut as Madama Butterfly, and Leonie Rysanek's wild traversals of Verdi and Wagner). He discusses his first performing experiences in the early 1970s in association with Al Carmines and others, the genesis of La Gran Scena and their development into a worldwide phenomenon, and his subsequent “legitimate” career as lecturer, stage director, vocal coach and voice teacher and commentator all stemmed from in his words, “getting in a dress and singing soprano,” which he dubs “the strangest part.” This is a free-wheeling and extremely Opera Queeny interview, peppered with Ira's unique anecdotes and snippets from Gran Scena (and other!) performances. Today's guest host Brian Castles-Onion is one of Australia's most exciting and well-known opera conductors. Completing his tertiary studies at the Newcastle Conservatorium of Music, his outstanding achievements speak for themselves. A Hope-Filled And Transformational Conversation About Hair Care

For caregivers of a multi-racial families, hair care can be stressful and overwhelming. How do you provide the best care for your daughter or know what products to use?  If you've had these questions, or felt overwhelmed and defeated by this topic, we have good news. Tony Award Nominated Acress Shalita Grant from the shows NCIS: New Orleans and You most recently, joins our show to discuss her new brand, Four Naturals Hair and provides a TON of hope and insight for caregivers just like you! About Shalita... Shalita Grant was raised in Petersburg, Virginia and attended high school at the Baltimore School for the Arts in Maryland where she was a YoungArts Winner in Theater and Presidential Scholar in the Arts. At 17, she received a scholarship to attend the Julliard School for her B.F.A. in Drama, graduating in 2010. She starred as Cassandra in "Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike" on Broadway, for which she earned a Tony Award nomination for Featured Actress in a Play and won the 2013 Theatre World Award for Outstanding Broadway Debut. Her TV credits Include, NCIS: New Orleans, Santa Clarita Diet, Search Party and You. In Shalita's words... My journey with Four Naturals started with a ponytail. As an actress with Type 4 hair, the tightest texture on the hair chart, I faced unique challenges while on NCIS New Orleans. My ever-changing ponytail concealed the damage I was chasing. I experienced traction alopecia in my second season and significant hair loss along my hairline in the third season, leading me to leave my job by the fourth season. I experienced a hard truth: No matter how much money you have or who you have access to, if you have type 4 hair, your options are limited to wigs and extensions, getting locs, or just cutting it all off. After quitting, I recognized my hair as my number one acting career problem and set out to solve it. In 2019, I began reading journals and articles from the world of Cosmetic Chemistry - absorbing everything there was to know about the three parts of the hair strand, hair porosity, cationic and anionic charge, and more. After reading, I understood that everything I was taught to do to care for my fragile, fickle type 4 hair was pure ritual! No wonder I could never solve my chronic issues with dryness and breakage.  I then researched the hair practices and ingredients used by the people of India, Eritrea, Ethiopia, and Greece and created the patent-pending Four Naturals Treatment. I combined hair science and plant medicine and solved my lifelong issues with dryness, breakage, lack of curl definition, lack of established hair routine, and heat damage.  The first treatment, I couldn't quite believe my results - my hair felt softer, the color was richer, and it appeared thicker, and my hair felt heavier! However, by my third treatment, my hair was undeniably different. I had the best hair of my life! It was so easy to maintain, unbelievably soft and strong, and I could flat iron it without the heat damage requiring a Big Chop. So, I created Four Naturals Hair, and my mission is to make the lives of people with Type 4 hair better, easier, and more consistent. Best of all, because my treatment addresses the hair health concerns of people whose needs have been ignored for generations, it solves everyone else's health concerns. I see the Four Naturals Treatment as the beginning of a hair revolution. How To Connect With Shalita... Welcome to Who was she? Podcast. I am your host, Tara Jabbari. After a decade working in documentaries, marketing and all things digital media, I found that podcasting is a strong medium to share stories. After years of producing for others, I decided to start my own biographical podcast. Who was she? Will focus on the life of a woman throughout Baha'i history. The third season is about Hazel Scott.Transcript: Born in 1920 and originally from Trinidad, Hazel was raised in Harlem and when she was only 8 years old, she was accepted as a pianist protegee at the prestigious Julliard School. Her mother was also a musician and artists over the years became Hazel's extended family. For instance, Pianist, Art Tatum was a father figure, saxophonist, Lester Young an uncle and singer, Billie Holiday was a big sister to Hazel to name a few. When she was a teenager, she started singing and playing across Manhatten. She became a regular at a new club, Cafe Society. Unlike other clubs at the time where black musicians played primarily for white patrons, this club was based on equality and diversity which made it like no other club in New York City at the time. When she toured, she was adamant to only play in places that did not segregate the audience. This limited her venues but she kept her stance. She married Adam Clayton Powell Jr, an activist and politician which heightened both their fame. This season, you will hear how she was blacklisted from working in the United States because of the McCarthy trials, cursed from working in Hollywood, and how her search for faith helped her fight depression and find the strength to be strong in the face of racism. So please subscribe and learn about this amazing woman who used her unique musical abilities to entertain and educate the world about racial equality. You can also found more information on our social media: http://instagram.com/whowasshepodcasthttps://www.facebook.com/whowasshepodcasthttps://www.pinterest.com/whowasshepodcast Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. Episode 127 with Gregory Jbara  In Part 1 of my podcast interview with Greg, we talk a little bit about him growing up right outside of Detroit and how he started early on in plays and musicals. We also discuss him going to the University of Michigan and then getting accepted and transferring to the prestigious Julliard School's drama division.  Greg and I discuss his first "official" theatre role in New York City in 1986-1987. All his hard work in the late 80's and early 90's eventually led him to Broadway with many roles including Damn Yankees, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels and then eventually what would be one of his big break out roles taking over the role of BILLY FLYNN in Chicago in 1997.  We obviously have lots to talk about in Part 2, including his Tony Award and role in Blue Bloods too. Those Wonderful People Out There In The Dark

I've seen The Music Man at least once a year, since age ten, usually around the 4th of July, which is when the story takes place and is the holiday it embodies so well --- the All-American, fireworking, head-back-looking-up-at-the-sky, patriotic singing holiday of holidays. And all due to the enthusiasm, good-old American stick-to-it-iveness and talent of Meredith Wilson. The entertainment industry doesn't produce people like Wilson anymore. Born at the turn of the century in Mason City, Ioway (the real River City), he was a musician, composer, playwright, radio star, bandleader, and author. He grew up in Iowa, a son of the Midwest, and became an accomplished flutist and piccolo player, so much so that he attended the Julliard School. He later played in John Phillip Sousa's band (talk about “76 Trombones!”) and for the New York Philharmonic under the master Toscanini. In 1950, Wilson met playwright and screenwriter Franklin Lacey, and they began an eight-year journey to capture Wilson's memories of his boyhood in Mason City. Thirty revisions and forty songs later, they produced the Broadway show, The Music Man, premiering in 1957. email: David@thosewonderfulpeople.comWebsite and blog: www.thosewonderfulpeople.comIG: @thosewonderfulpeopleTwitter: @FilmsInTheDark

I have been looking forward to this one because I love music. I love all kinds of music, and today we are going to talk about Jazz. Jazz is one of the earliest forms of pop music in The United States and Jazz is a distinctively American style of music originating in the early decades of the 20th century. Its roots include Afro-American folk music traditions, such as spirituals, work songs, and blues. Jazz music is much more lively and upbeat than blues music. Jazz is often associated with swinging and swaying movements, lively atmospheres and improv. Lots of modern musicians will say they are greatly influenced by Jazz. Some of the great Jazz musicians include Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, John Coltrane, Bessie Smith, Fletcher Henderson, and Billie Holiday.  In fact, Performers like Elvis Pressley, Chuck Berry, The Rolling Stones, The Doors, The Grateful Dead, and Aerosmith all talk about their Jazz influences. Music styles like Rock, R&B, Hip-hop, Latin, and others that produce a swaying rhythm have been influenced by Jazz.  In today's podcast we have a very special guest, the very accomplished Loren Schoenberg. He is the Founding Director at The National Jazz Museum in Harlem, a published author, and teaches Jazz History at The Julliard School in NYC.   Always more to learn. Talk to you soon.

The Ojai Music Festival's Artistic Director Ara Guzelimian was well situated to lead the festival through the tumult of the past three years. He's certainly looking forward to the June 8-11 festival this year and a return to something more closely resembling normal and worrying more about the music and less about the logistics of managing this premier festival of modern contemporary music through a global pandemic. He will be helped this year by returning guest Rhiannon Giddens (ep. 70), as Music Director. Giddens, a generational talent whose broad interests are well-suited to Ojai's spirit of musical adventure and exploration, was so charmed by Ojai in 2020 (the festival was held in September that covid-19 year) that she was eager to return. Ara didn't have to ask her twice to partner with him on programming. Among the audience offerings this year will be a chamber and voice ensemble performing Giddens' "Omar's Journey," from her opera about the Islamic scholar who was sold into bondage in the 19th century and continued his scholarly pursuits despite the horrors of slavery. Of course, there will also be the wide range of pieces performed which characterize the festival, from Bach to John Adams to ancient Chinese music to folk ballads to rapper DJ Flying Lotus. Guzelimian was formerly the artistic director in the 1990s, and recently retired as Dean of The Julliard School, perhaps the most prestigious music school in the country. He has conducted the popular "chalk talks" before the performances for decades. We talked about his journey to Ojai, his brilliant career and Ojai's mystical nature. We also talked about John Luther Adams, Harry Partsch and why Ojai remains so important to global culture. We did not talk about FDR's campaign against Alf Landon, Neopolitan pizza culture or sportfishing for Nile perch on Lake Tanganyika. Last week Jesse shared with us how Mary Rodgers selected him to tell her remarkable story — from her childhood growing up surrounded by the brightest lights of the Golden Age of Broadway, but always yearning for love and attention from her father, Richard Rodgers, of Rodgers & Hammerstein — to her teenage years struggling to get out from under the thumb of her very disapproving mother, Dorothy. Today we look at the work and career of Mary Rodgers, including how as a working mother raising six children was not only able to become a successful Broadway composer in her own right (Once Upon A Mattress and The Mad Show), she was then able to reinvent herself and become a best-selling author (Freaky Friday), and eventually the Chair of the Board of The Julliard School. It's a captivating book, and Jesse was a fascinating guest! Enjoy! In today's show, I'm reading from a vintage book in my collection written by American educator and musician John Erskine in 1915 entitled, "The Moral Obligation To Be Intelligent." This particular section was a commencement address delivered to college students focused on "The Call To Service" where he warns us about making new science a sort of religion as more and more of our intelligence is removed as we willingly give up our freedoms.Erskine was a major influence in his era--he was an educator, author, pianist, composer and had been a professor at Amherst College and Columbia University. He was also the first President of the Julliard School of Music. His most important essay was "The Moral Obligation To Be Intelligent" which is shared here. Enjoy some higher thought to UPlift culture...stay the course!

Harvey Brownstone Interviews Michael Dane, Author, “HomoAmerican: The Secret Society” Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth interview with Michael Dane, Author, “HomoAmerican: The Secret Society” About Harvey's guest: Today's guest, Michael Dane, has written a multiple award-winning and critically acclaimed memoir entitled, “HomoAmerican: The Secret Society”.  Our guest started out with a prestigious scholarship at the Julliard School of American Ballet in New York, then moved to the American Ballet Theatre, and was then recruited to the Iranian National Ballet in 1976.  But when it became frightfully clear that the Shah of Iran was about to be overthrown, our guest fled the country in a harrowing escape over the Turkish mountains.    He then danced with the world famous “Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo”, performing in the most glamorous venues.   He then reinvented himself as a singer-songwriter, moved to Paris, signed a recording contract with Aquarius Records, and recorded 3 albums.  As a provocative and innovative performer in Europe and New York, he became something of a sensation, headlining at the most avant garde clubs including “Studio 54”, “The Grapevine” and “The Anvil”.   He then became an actor, appearing in movies like “Spike of Bensonhurst”, “A Certain Sacrifice”, “Hangmen” and “It Could Happen to You”, and on TV shows including “All My Children” and “Saturday Night Live”.  And the things he's had to do to make a living when he was BETWEEN jobs?  Well, you'll have to read the book to learn about that.  What makes his book so special, is his ability to articulate, in the most exquisite way, the stark reality of life for most gay men, especially from my generation – the journey of growing up in isolation, and in ghettos created by stereotypes, forcing us to create false personas and identities in a world that insists that we wear a disguise in order to survive.   The book has won numerous awards, including THREE Royal Dragonfly Awards, the Independent Author Network Award, and the IndieReader Discovery Award.  And the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts AND the Stonewall National Museum & Archives have added the book to their research collections.  This is an introspective, insightful, brutally honest and occasionally shocking account of a turbulent, sometimes chaotic – but always fascinating – life lived on the edge.   For more interviews and podcasts go to: https://www.harveybrownstoneinterviews.com/ http://www.homoamerican.com/ #MichaelDane   #harveybrownstoneinterviews

obituary courtesy of the International Society of Bassists: Wolfgang Güttler, whose decades-long career as a performer, recording artist and educator garnered numerous awards, including the Concours de Genève, died on September 18, 2022. He was 77 years old.  Born in Brasov, Romania, he was solo bassist with the SWR Symphony Orchestra Baden-Baden and Freiburg, and tutti double bass with the Berlin Philharmonic and Bucharest Radio Orchestra. He served as professor of double bass at the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln and the Hochschule für Musik Karlsruhe, and gave masterclasses at the Julliard School.    He was dedicated to expanding the double bass repertoire, from classical standards to jazz, and was a champion of contemporary music. His remarkable musical partnership with the Rumanian double bass virtuoso Ovidiu Badila was cut short by Badila's untimely passing.    Says Martin Wind of his late teacher Wolfgang Güttler, “He encouraged me to listen to my own voice, follow my instincts and become an independently thinking, complete musician. In my 25+ years of teaching there has not been one day where I did not pass on the lessons that I learned from him.” Petru Iuga also paid tribute upon learning of Güttler's death: “He was one of the greatest bassists and musicians I ever met. In this episode of the Out of the Clouds podcast, host Anne Muhlethaler interviews former Commonwealth British gymnast, dancer, choreographer, entrepreneur and now certified breath coach Aicha McKenzie (@AichaMcKenzie). Aicha is the CEO and founder of the AMCK Group, which she launched in 2005 with AMCK Dance - an award-winning international premium dance agency with the most elite selection of dancers, choreographers, and creative directors - as well AMCK Models in 2008, London's only exclusively male model agency, counting over 150 male models on its books, shooting campaigns for Prada, Gucci, Burberry, among many others. Aicha has made many TV appearances, appearing as a judge on reality dance shows in the UK and the US. Aicha has also been responsible for choreographing 300 Olympic dancers during the London 2012 Olympic Games.Aicha and Anne met on a very special project with burlesque cabaret dancer Dita Von Teese, a filmed performance that was to be turned into a hologram, the keystone of the famed shoe designer Christian Louboutin's 20th anniversary retrospective at the London Design Museum. Over the course of this very personal interview, Aicha shares her amazing story, or her ‘many lives' as she refers to it: from her first life as the first Black gymnast to win a medal at the Commonwealth Games, supported by her amazing mother, to becoming a commercial dancer and working as a choreographer with top artists, to her latest pursuit launching, running, and expanding an award-winning AMCK Group, which consists of four entities, AMCK Dance, AMCK Models, AMCK Fit and BreatheByAMCK.The two of them move to talking about the stress of managing it all, Aicha's health scares, and how movement has been a through line for her, even in difficult times. Liz and Steph have a delightful conversation with violist CAROL RODLAND! Carol enjoys a distinguished international career as a concert and recording artist whose playing has been described as “larger than life, sweetly in tune and infinitely variegated”. Ms Rodland is also currently professor of viola and chamber music at the Julliard School, where she herself studied with the godmother of the viola, the incomparable Karen Tuttle. We talk about her full-circle tour of Europe and the US, studying and teaching with viola giants Karen Tuttle and Kim Kashkashian. What's it like to be besties with Kim K? How does her recent injury help her teaching? How does community service fit into her busy schedule? We dig into these subjects and way more with Carol, who's such a gracious guru - committed to giving each student exactly what they need to reach their potential. Mentioned in this episode:The Karen Tuttle Legacy, by Jeffrey Irvine, Kim Kashkashian, Michelle LaCourse, Lynne Ramsey, Karen Ritscher, Carol Rodlandhttps://www.thestrad.com/reviews/book-review-the-karen-tuttle-legacy-a-resource-and-guide-for-viola-students-teachers-and-performers/10734.articleSupport the show
