Tracey is particularly happy this month as we're discussing our favourite songs from her favourite ever year, 1991, including hip hop, shoegaze, thrash, pop, grunge, indie, & more. We've each chosen our 10 favourite songs of the year and sent them over to Colin's wife Helen, who put the playlists together and distributed them so we were each given a playlist of the 20 songs from the other two hosts, along with our own 10. We then ranked the playlists in order of preference and sent them back to Helen, who totalled up the points and worked out the order. She also joined us on the episode to read out the countdown, which we found out as we recorded so all reactions are genuine. Now, admittedly, in parts we're a little bit brutal to some of the songs in the list as we're three separate people with differing music tastes, but please remember that to be in this episode at all the songs have to have been in one of our top 10's of that year.Bands featured in this episode include (In alphabetical order, no spoilers here!) - American Music Club, Billy Bragg, Curve, Cypress Hill, Dinosaur Jr, Extreme, The Field Mice, Guns N Roses, Chesney Hawkes, Ice-T, Mercury Rev, Metallica, Monster Magnet, My Bloody Valentine, Nirvana, Orbital, Primus, R.E.M., Scorpions, Sepultura, Shudder To Think, Slint, The SMashing Pumpkins, Soundgarden, SPin Doctors, Teenage Fanclub, The Telescopes, Temple Of The Dog, A Tribe Called Quest Ft Leaders Of The New School, & The Wedding PresentFind all songs in alphabetical order here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5XhJtoJjmZC9DLNh2lQqCL?si=6c98c73fd7dd480bFind our We Dig Music Pollwinners Party playlist (featuring all of the winning songs up until now) here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/45zfDHo8zm6VqrvoEQSt3z?si=Ivt0oMj6SmitimvumYfFrQIf you want to listen to megalength playlists of all the songs we've individually picked since we started doing best of the year episodes, you can listen to Colin's here – https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5x3Vy5Jry2IxG9JNOtabRT?si=HhcVKRCtRhWCK1KucyrDdgIan's here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2H0hnxe6WX50QNQdlfRH5T?si=XmEjnRqISNqDwi30p1uLqAand Tracey's here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2p3K0n8dKhjHb2nKBSYnKi?si=7a-cyDvSSuugdV1m5md9NwThe playlist of 20 songs from the other two hosts was scored as usual, our favourite song got 20 points, counting down incrementally to our least favourite which got 1 point. The scoring of our own list of 10 is now slightly more complicated in order to give a truer level of points to our own favourites. So rather than them only being able to score as many points as our 10th favourite in the other list, the points in our own list were distributed as follows -1st place - 20 points2nd place - 18 points3rd place – 16 points4th place – 14 points5th place – 12 points6th place – 9 points7th place – 7 points8th place – 5 points9th place – 3 points10th place -1 pointHosts - Ian Clarke, Colin Jackson-Brown & Tracey BGuest starring Helen Jackson-Brown.Playlist compiling/distributing – Helen Jackson-BrownRecorded/Edited/Mixed/Original Music by Colin Jackson-Brown for We Dig PodcastsThanks to Peter Latimer for help with the scoring system.Part of the We Dig Podcasts network along with Free With This Months Issue & Pick A Disc.Twitter – https://twitter.com/wedigmusicpcast/Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/wedigmusicpcast/Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/wedigpusicpcast/Find our other episodes & podcasts at www.wedigpodcasts.com

In the wake of news that a whole raft of cost-of-living subsidies and temporary tax cuts are set to end tomorrow, along with all the other news headlines, I had to Google reasons to be optimistic this morning. We've got the end of the fuel tax discount and the subsidy for road user charges for diesel vehicles coming to an end. Half-price public transport fares will stop for most as well. Children under 13 remain free, as do half price fares for community card holders and people under 25. But for most people, especially those who rely on public transport to get to work, fares are going to go up and fuel is going to go up. Budget advisers say the additional increase in spending on fuel and transport is going to put people doing it tough right now under even more pressure, further into hardship. They say that about 10 to 15 percent of the weekly income is spent on petrol and transportation - for those who need budget help and budget advice, this is just going to make it even tougher for them.     How long do you think the tough times are going to last? Economists say about 18 months. Are you going to be able to weather the tough times and for some of you are you looking at the news headlines and thinking well that doesn't apply to me, things are fine here.   We're noticing it in our household. We've three working adults who have all got jobs. We're certainly not on the bread line, but if we're noticing it, I shudder to think what it's like in some households.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Graham Coath talks music with Chris Matthews from Quiz Show! American indie rock trio Quiz Show - involving members of legendary DC alternative rock band Shudder To Think, Guided By Voices and The Dambuilders - present their eponymous debut album, released via Montclair, NJ-based Magic Door Record Label. This electrifying collection of 12 tracks involves Shudder To Think's Chris Matthews and Jesse Krakow, together with drummer Kevin March (Guided By Voices, The Dambuilders). Earlier, bassist Jesse Krakow had taken over from the original bassist Frank Gibbons and, more recently, Joe Billy has replaced Kevin March, whose drumming features throughout this album. The 'Quiz Show' LP brings together the singles the band recorded with award-winning producer Ray Ketchem (Guided By Voices, Luna, Versus, Elk City, Gramercy Arms) between 2017 and 2020 at his Magic Door Recording Studio in Montclair, NJ. Ketchem also re-mastered these tracks for this release. Interesting fact: through this process, Matthews discovered that he enjoys singing as much as playing guitar. Quiz Show songs are full of protest, friendship and frustration. Tapping the energy of punk rock with its loud guitars and driving rhythms, the vocals strive to capture the emotional fervour of punky garage rock. Pushing boundaries with rhythms, arrangements, chord structures and vocals that expand from straight-ahead power to music, they weave together different influences, including classic rock, prog and alternative, to create complex and beautiful in unexpected ways.

Five years earlier, Shudder had their claim with a record called The Pony Express Record for Epic that was as polarizing as it was genre-twisting; artsy, prog leaning, angular and sexy rock songs set within complex arrangements; this work translated perfectly into his post-Shudder life and work as composer for movies like School Of Rock, Wet Hot American Summer, Laurel Canyon, Shrill, Glow and now the excellent YellowJackets, streaming now on Showtime.

Along for the ride this week is drummer Adam Wade, who drummed in not one, but two of the best bands of that era (Jawbox and Shudder To Think, respectively). This week we're discussing every album by Shudder to Think. Led by Craig Wedren, Shudder to Think started out on Ian Mackaye's Dischord Records before becoming one of the craziest (and most short-lived) major label acts. Proggy, heavy, punky, and fun as hell. Wedren went on to become an accomplished TV composer (Wet Hot American Summer, Reno 911!, The Whitest Kids U' Know), which is something none of us were expecting.Closing track: “Pebbles” from Get Your Goat (1992)Check out our episode playlists on Spotify!https://open.spotify.com/user/motherpuncherincJoin our Patreon to jump the line when requesting an artist, as well as get bonus episodes, early access to shows, and more!https://www.patreon.com/everyalbumeverMerch available now!https://pandermonkey.creator-spring.com/Instagram:Follow Mike @pandermonkey for show clips and original musicFollow Alex @motherpuncherMike's Picks:Pony Express Record (1994) — Best Album, Personal FavoriteFuneral at the Movies (1991) — Worst Album, Least FavoriteAlex's Picks:Pony Express Record (1994) — Best AlbumGet Your Goat (1992) — Personal Favorite50,000 BC (1997) — Worst Album, Least FavoriteAlbums we discussed this episode…It was Arson EP (1988)Curses, Spells, Voodoo, Mooses (1989)Ten Spot (1990)Funeral at the Movies (1991)Get Your Goat (1992)Pony Express Record (1994)50,000 BC (1997)

In many ways, Craig’s life has the most parallels to Joe’s of any Trap Set guest. Craig and joy discuss: divorce; Little Tavern; DC; Shudder to think; Musical Ecstasy; becoming “muted”; emerging the “muted” state via life coaching; vulnerability; and film composing.

You may know him from the "avant-punk" of 1990s Shudder To Think, but you'd probably been listening to Craig Wedren in some way in the last twenty years. From his frequent collaborations with writer/director David Wain on the various Wet Hot American Summer television seasons and movie, Role Models, Stella and Wainy Days, to his recent work on shows like Fresh Off The Boat, GLOW, Powerless, Hung and Blunt Talk, or his contributions on films such as Velvet Goldmine, School of Rock, Search Party, Wanderlust and many more, Craig has put his ear for 70s rock radio and 80s MTV to work. He stops by to talk about his latest solo release, Adult Desire from 2016, and discuss the virtual reality component that took us back to the immersion of yesteryear when audio and visual worked in thoughtful tandem. We also discuss his years spent in the Cleveland area, fronting teenage coverbands and enjoying the sounds of the Michael Stanley Band and Donnie Iris on WMMS, his apprehension writing music for 1990s based television, watching director and former Lemonheads bassist Jesse Peretz burn a suitcase on tour, and of course, KISS, plus so much more. DJ SpookNasty and MC Tummy Troubles are extra loopy this week as Aaron was late to record, due to an incredible advance screening of "Thor: Ragnarok," and Jack was already three drinks in. Aside from discussing the important topics of the week, they bring back their Movie Corner segment and discuss the awesome horror streaming app all genre fans should check out, AMC's Shudder. NEWS HIGHLIGHTS THIS WEEK: “Game of Thrones” stars Peter Dinklage and Charles Dance will executive produce “Qausimodo,” a new TV series adaptation of Victor Hugo’s The Hunchback of Notre Dame. It’s the first drama series to come out of Atrium TV -- which is a new association of international streaming and telecommunication platforms that was launched earlier this year. Meaning, the show will air exclusively to a yet-to-be-named OTT overseas. Netflix sorta released some ratings numbers, which it never really does. The streamer says that, on average, more than 8 million viewers have watched at least one season of one series in 24 hours or less.  Wyatt Cenac is getting his own late-night show at HBO. The project will be a comedic docuseries where Cenac goes on a “journey to understand some of the big issues of the moment and investigate real-world solutions.” HBO has given the series a 10-episode order and will premiere in the Spring of 2018. ABC Freeform has ordered a new docu-series titled, "Disney’s Fairy Tale Weddings" which will go behind the scenes of different lavish weddings that take place at Disney destinations around the world.   AARON & JACK’S HORROR MOVIE CORNER:WHAT AARON WATCHED THIS WEEK - "Happy Death Day" WHAT JACK WATCHED THIS WEEK - "Ouija: Origin of Evil" AARON’S LOSERS: "Dynasty," "Supernatural" and MTV’s "TRL" JACK’S LOSERS: "Dynasty" AARON’S FENCERS: "The Last Man on Earth" and "Lore"JACK’S FENCERS: "Channel Zero: No End House," "I Love You, America" and "White Famous" AARON’S WINNERS: "South Park," "I Love You, America" and "Mindhunter" JACK’S WINNERS: "DuckTales," "The Shannara Chronicles" and the Youtube Channel, ChrisStuckmann Be sure to subscribe on iTunes and comment! Vincent Feldman/June 21, 2014 Joseph A. Gervasi interviews Vincent Feldman. Despite living in Washington, DC for a few years while attending college, photographer Vincent Feldman has lived his entire life in the city of Philadelphia. It is this life-long relationship with the Philly that lead to his passion for the city, its neighborhoods, its endangered (and often lost) architecture, and — perhaps most crucially — its people. Not only does Feldman document the dilapidated but once glorious buildings of Philadelphia (many gone, with others soon to vanish from the landscape), but the effect of these buildings on the lives of the people Feldman sees as often being manipulated (usually to their detriment) by forces more powerful than them. Coming from a family of immigrants (Jewish and Italian) with a distrust of “the State,” Feldman inherited both disdain and engagement. Punk and later hardcore punk came to Feldman as a natural, almost pre-ordained fit. He wrote most of the music for the ‘80s HC band Legitimate Reason (featuring previous interview subject John Finn), who had their 7” EP recorded at the famous Inner Ear Studios by Eli Janney. While living in Washington, DC, Feldman became a roadie for the just-formed Shudder To Think, which got him touring the U.S. and later Europe. Seeing the contrast between the disused, abandoned buildings in Philly and the thriving, vibrant squat scene in Europe inspired Feldman to document the vanishing buildings of Philadelphia and show how they were once used. While Feldman ultimately moved away from music, he often cites his experiences in the HC punk scene as serving as some of the inspiration for his work. Earlier in 2014, Paul Dry Books published Feldman’s stunning book City Abandoned to great acclaim. As a witness to the MOVE catastrophe of 1985 and the disregard for some of Philadelphia’s finest architecture, Vincent Feldman has seen this city at its worst. And yet, even now, he uses his art to inspire positive action; he bears witness. You can read more about Vincent Feldman’s book City Abandoned here at the Paul Dry Books website. Thanks to Will Schofield over at Paul Dry. City Abandoned may be purchased at both the Paul Dry Books website or, perhaps more conveniently, here at Amazon.com. One of the busiest human beings we know...Dan Frome afforded us a little time to talk. This is the same guy who recorded the Unteachers 7" and some tracks on "A Human Comedy". He now plays bass for Roomrunner and just recorded with J Robbins. (J keeps coming up...anybody know him? We should talk to him.) Dan started running sound for Future Islands about 1 & 1/2 years ago. This new gig has dragged him around the world, Coachella (funny Jared Leto story), David Letterman, just insane. Hear the stories of his super secret recording studio in Baltimore, the legend of that space which has degrees touching Shudder To Think, Ted Nicely, TV On The Radio and other early Dischord folks. Hear how Dan FOUND lost recording reels from bands such as Rodan, The Jesus Lizard and more. His path to today has been bananas. Special thanks to our pal Bill O'Really for closing our show for us.
