Traffic fatalities increased last year, even though fewer Americans were behind the wheel. Drug overdose deaths are soaring from California to New York, with fentanyl flooding American cities. Carjackings have doubled in cities like Oakland and Chicago, where there are already restrictive gun control laws on the books. As Cam highlights, politicians who are myopically focused on "gun crimes" are missing the bigger picture and are putting all of us at risk.

As Cam explains, however, the experience in one state with plenty of gun control measures already in place demonstrates the futility of trying to ban our way to safety.

Media outlets, including Denver's WestWord, are pointing fingers at the NRA for the shooting in Boulder, Colorado that left ten people dead, just a few days after a local ban on most semi-automatic rifles in the city was struck down by a judge in the state. As Cam points out, those who say the gun ban would have stopped the crime are ignoring the many gun control laws that have been put on the books in the state since 2013, including a ban on "high capacity" magazines and a "red flag" gun seizure law.

A close look at Philadelphia's 499 homicides in 2020 reveals that the surge in violence began after the city's COVID-19 lockdowns were put in place and continued throughout the rest of the year. As Cam explains, the data demonstrates that the shootings and homicides weren't driven by the increase in gun sales to law-abiding citizens, but by the pullback on the part of police and the court system, which led to far fewer consequences for violent offenders.

Overview The decision to share one’s story about living with depression, addiction, suicidal ideation, or any other emotional challenge is deeply personal and worthy of reflection. With the nonprofit I help oversee, United Suicide Survivors International, we encourage people with lived experience to ask themselves, “Am I Ready” (on-line course) before sharing their story publicly. By weighing the pros and cons of sharing and preparing strategies of self-care that are helpful during the sometimes challenging process of crafting the narrative, storytellers can be in a better position to make a difference. In this podcast I sit down with Cameron Stout, a securities defense lawyer who is boldly being “vocal, visible and visionary” in his industry by sharing his journey through and resilient recovery from depression and alcoholism. Attorneys are often type A professionals who are driven to succeed, yet often are reluctant to express vulnerability and share personal challenges. By speaking publicly about his recovery from major depression in 2013, and describing his seven years of sobriety, Cam reduces stigma, and helps others find the courage to be open. In addition to telling his story, Cam outlines the therapies, treatment, and wellness practices that have been key in his recovery process. As Cam will describe for us, his mission of being a storyteller has also been a large part of his own healing, as it can be for all of us. About Cameron Stout Cameron Stout.png Cameron Stout is a nationally recognized securities defense litigator and a mediator. In late 2012, his legal career was derailed for over a year by a major depressive episode that required hospitalization. As a result of several modes of therapy, the love of family, friends and colleagues, and his own hard work, Cam is standing on the other side of the abyss of mental illness, and is seven years sober. Cam describes his journey in a short video, and in an article in the Princeton Alumni Weekly: https://vimeo.com/230186411 https://paw.princeton.edu/article/essay-how-i-survived-depression Feeling better in many ways than he ever has, Cam is paying his resilient recovery forward by sharing his message of hope and recovery with students, educators, and other professionals. In July, 2018, Cam founded Stout Heart, Inc., a 501(c)(3) that supports the pro bono presentations that he makes to high school, college, and law students (including at Harvard and Stanford). www.stoutheart.org Cam’s message is timely and powerful: The pernicious stigma around these illnesses is a dangerously false narrative that must be stamped out. Mental health conditions are just that, health conditions, not weaknesses. They are not our fault, and there is tremendous hope for ongoing recovery and effective management of these challenges. In addition to candidly sharing his own lived experience, Cam discusses ways to identify and address mental health and addiction issues. He also describes his strategies for self-care, and how to build the mindful resilience and the perspective that we all need in order to learn, work, and live with a lighter heart and a more focused mind. Cam graduated in 1980 from Princeton University, where he was a member of the varsity tennis team. Following his graduation with honors from the University of San Francisco School of Law, Cam practiced for decades as a securities litigator, defending financial services companies in customer disputes and employment cases. He is an active mediator in those practice areas as well. The very proud father of two adult children, Cam now lives in Princeton, New Jersey. February 26th, 2020 | The Hockey Betting Podcast The latest episode of The Hockey Betting Podcast has Brian Blessing and Cam Stewart taking a look at games for Wednesday, February 26 and Thursday, February 27, 2020. There is no commercial break in this episode. There are three games on the Wednesday night card including the NBCSN doubleheader.  Thursday is a full card loaded with opportunity. As always, the guys have you covered with full analysis, great picks, and the hockey humor that only they can deliver. Listen to the latest episode of The Hockey Betting Podcast to get all of Brian and Cam’s picks. Wednesday, February 26 2020 NHL Schedule, Betting Odds, Picks Buffalo Sabres at Colorado Avalanche -210, 6 (NBCSN, SN) The resurgent Sabres have won five of their last six but remain eight points out of a spot in the East for the 2020 Stanley Cup Playoffs. Brian has mentioned in previous episodes that the Avs are his pick to hoist Lord Stanley come June. This is a big number for the injury ravaged Avs. Brian leans over the total as does Cam. Cam says the Sabres deserve a look as the big dog. Edmonton Oilers at Vegas Golden Knights -195, 6.5 Vegas has hot dice with six straight wins to take the lead in the Pacific Division and was considered a trade deadline winner. Connor McDavid is back for the Oil but they have lost three of their last four games. However, Edmonton is a playoff team getting a huge price here. Brian calls the high Vegas price “insane” and likes the over. Cam has a big pick on tonight’s side. Listen now to The Hockey Betting Podcast to get it. Pittsburgh Penguins -200, 6 at Los Angeles Kings (NBCSN) The last place Kings have burned it to the ground and have called up youngsters for seasoning. But the public Pens will carry an expensive price that may lead many to seek the puck lines. Pittsburgh is in the cooler with three straight losses. The guys are thinking Pens puck line. Cam expects Pittsburgh to explode out of their trance. Thursday, February 27th 2020 NHL Schedule, Betting Odds, Picks New York Rangers at Montreal Canadiens -132, 6 (TSN2, RDS) The red-hot Rangers have won eight of their last nine and are just four points out of the final Eastern Conference spot for the 2020 Stanley Cup Playoffs. As Cam has mentioned on previous episodes, they also play their best hockey on the road. Bleu Blanc Rogue is only 13-15-6 at home and has dropped six of their last eight overall. Is the wrong team favoured? Cam comes out fast and strong here. Listen to today’s episode to get the big NHL pick. Chicago Blackhawks at Tampa Bay Lightning -225, 6.5 Puck lines with Tampa Bay could prove to be a popular play here. The Lighting may strike as they are in a foul mood after losing their last three games. Cam says Chicago is in big trouble here after TBL’s Tuesday home loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs. Toronto Maple Leafs -114, 6.5 at Florida Panthers Two of the most skilled but gutless teams in hockey meet here. Over the total is on the minds of many as neither club asserts much effort on defence. Nor does either side have reliable goaltending. After being the object of ridicule for losing at home to a backup Zamboni driver fill-in goalie Saturday night, the Toronto Maple Leafs won at Tampa Bay 4-3 on Tuesday. Typical Toronto! But now what? Brian thinks the total should be seven for this game. The guys like the over, especially with Leafs defenceman Jake Muzzin out. The guys adamantly don’t trust either side. Dallas Stars at Boston Bruins -177, 5.5 (NBCSN) “Defence travels” and Dallas has plenty of it. Boston is very public and could be over-valued as the expensive home chalk. But the B’s have lost two in a row. Cam has a strong pick in this one. Listen to The Hockey Betting Podcast to get it. Vancouver Canucks -157, 6.5 at Ottawa Senators Ottawa has been a dangerous plucky pest as a home dog this season. But playoff bound Vancouver has won four of their last six. Brian asks if Vancouver is stepping into a trap door? Cam wants nothing to do with the side but likes over the total. Minnesota Wild -200, 6 at Detroit Red Wings Cam cracked hard on Minnesota for firing Bruce Boudreau on Friday’s episode (02/21/2020). And the Wild are the type of team that could flop at hapless Detroit. However, Minnesota is 3-1 since gassing the popular Boudreau. The Dead Wings are last in the NHL for goals scored, goals against, goal differential and points. Which of course means in hockey they could be quite dangerous at this price! Cam passes due to price but would consider the Wild puck line. The guys also lean over the total. New York Islanders at St. Louis Blues -155 The Note has perked back up with five straight wins. Offence remains an Islander concern as NYI has lost five of their last seven. Cam expects the Isles to be focused after a Tuesday home loss to the Rangers. Calgary Flames at Nashville Predators -134 The Preds have more firepower here and are tied for the last playoff spot in the West with five payouts in their last seven games. Is Calgary primed for a major letdown after Tuesday’s 5-2 win at Boston? Brian has caught the big Flames trend of 8-0-1 over the total in their last nine games. Cam says Nashville is a fraud but will stick with over the total only. Washington Capitals -143 at Winnipeg Jets Now that The Great Eight has his 700 goals will the Caps get back into gear? Washington cranks cash on the road with a mark of 21-9-1. The Jets have lost five of their last eight games. Washington beat the Jets 4-3 at home on Tuesday. Listen now to The Hockey Betting Podcast for a strong pick from Cam. New Jersey Devils at San Jose Sharks -167 On the last several episodes Cam has touted the hidden value of the Devils, who have won in seven of their last ten games.  Cam is thinking under the total at the Shark Tank and says San Jose is far too expensive. Make sure to listen to The Hockey Betting Podcast to get all of the free NHL picks and insight from Brian and Cam.
