Today we are talking about stalling versus flow, in birth, and how your body's balance, and alignment can play a major role in that process. What does it even mean to be balanced and aligned? To have this conversation today with me on Yoga| Birth| Babies I have Lindsay McCoy. Lindsay McCoy is an exercise physiologist, an experienced birth doula, and a childbirth educator of 12 years. She combines her knowledge of biomechanics and functional movement with her knowledge of the childbirth process to help prepare the body for birth. She has worked in a clinical setting as an Exercise Physiologist and now works exclusively with the prenatal/postnatal population in private practice. She is the co-founder of the Body Ready Pregnancy, Birth and Postpartum, a biomechanics based exercise program. She is also the co-founder of Body Ready Method®, a training for birth professionals. She has trained over 1200 birth professionals and supported 10K+ pregnant families. Her specialty is pelvic biomechanics for pregnancy and childbirth and the core system + pelvic floor. Lindsay and I dive into baby's journey through the pelvis, the emotional state of birth flow, and the different levels of the pelvis. We will cover what you can do during labor to keep things flowing, and of course what you can do prenatally for a more efficient, supported birth. Dietitian, Exercise Physiologist and Diabetes Educator Kate Save is normally way more polished, professional, polite and charming than the potty-mouth host but this time at TYP Central, she calls out some of the big movers and shakers in the food space, including the government) and their (apparent) lack of care factor' about the ever-expanding volume of 'food-like' substances masquerading as nutrition, filling the shelves of our supermarkets, and the stomachs of our children.befitfood.com.auSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
It's fair to say that Exercise Physiologist and Change-ologist Unna Goldsworthy and I don't see eye to eye on everything, which is perfect because (1) that would make for a boring conversation and (2) if we did, we'd be in some kind of cognitive cult or philosophical echo chamber, and nobody wants that. This was a fun episode, talking about the mind stuff and emotional stuff that drive the practical, physical and behavioural stuff. Enjoy.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
I spend a ton of time exercising, but more recently I've wondered if I can direct my training to be as efficient as possible. If I'm going to spend hours each week on this activity, I want to ensure that I'm extracting the maximum amount of value I can from this time investment.Coupled with the new perspective of being a father, I'm also interested in staying as fit, healthy and mentally sharp as I can. That's why at the start of 2024, I decided to invest in a few investigations to determine my level of fitness and direct my training for efficiency. On the pod today is Mr. Kiran Chopra a highly skilled Sport and Exercise Physiologist who actually performed my investigations that you'll be able to see on YouTube if you're interested in seeing me huff and puff, sweating away on a watt bike with my top off.Kiran specialises in physiological testing, evaluation, and strength as well as reconditioning. He has expertise working with both athletic and non-athletic populations and has a strong research interest in muscular physiology, environmental performance physiology, and blood flow restriction training.Today we're going to focus our conversation around 3 tests that he believes are just as useful as cholesterol testing and blood pressure monitoring, which are RMR, Dexa and VO2 Max.If you've never heard of these, don't worry we're going to break down what they are and why they're useful as a guide to what you should be eating and how you should be exercising to keep you strong and fit into your later years. Of course, the first uphill battle is to make exercise a habit, but once you have it as a non-negotiable in your week like myself, the next step would be how to prioritise specific types of exercise to make your training as efficient as possible. We also talk about protein requirements, how training changes as we age, the effect of exercise on our mitochondria, what we should eat if we train late in the evening and whether fasted cardio is better for fat burning.
80% of people will experience lower back pain at some point in their lives and for many people, that pain is chronic. I'm joined today by Exercise Physiologist and lower back pain specialist, Amanda Harris to talk about what makes back pain unique, how we can overcome it, and what we can do to prevent it in the first place. Amanda HarrisBeing mentored by and actively collaborating with some of the top surgeons, neurologists, manual medicine physicians, and physical therapists in the Mid-Atlantic over the past 25 years has given me a unique perspective on how the human body “should” move and how that movement can also “heal”. By identifying faulty movement patterns, and using gentle movement and exercise to correct them, we can free ourselves from back pain, and go on to live healthy, active lives. I also have a Master's Degree (M.Ed.) in Exercise Physiology from the University of Virginia, am a certified Medical Exercise Specialist through the Medical Exercise Training Institute in Houston TX, and am a certified RedCord Active Specialist through RedCord International. I like to explain why these two areas (weight and exercise) can be so difficult to navigate, so that the individual can stop feeling guilty if they have failed before. For those following along on socials, you'll know that I've recently caught the running bug. But for those who are part of my Hormone Reset program might be surprised by my recent choice of movement styles. This is because I actually warn off running, unless done properly. It can mess with your hormones, lead to injuries and worsen exhaustion. So why am I doing this? What can go wrong with running? & most importantly, how can you support your hormone health while exercising? All this plus more is covered in today's chat with exercise physiologist Chloe Walker.
