Stephanie and her guest Shadia Hrichi delve into the richness of messy stories and God's incredible redemption. We have the privilege of welcoming back the brilliant and passionate Shadia Hrichi. Shadia is known for her love of messy stories and the people who have experienced pain and trials. Together with Stephanie, she uncovers the beauty of redemption in the lives of characters such as Hagar, Legion, Tamar, and Rahab. Throughout the episode, you'll witness Shadia's deep personal connection to these stories, particularly the themes of sexual pain, betrayal, and heartache. But don't worry, redemption is the thread that weaves through it all, pointing to the transformative power of our Lord. Shadia also shares a powerful story of how she prayed a bold prayer during a conference, asking God to translate her Bible study, Hagar, into Arabic. Discover the amazing way God answered her prayer and be inspired to pray bold prayers too! Shadia tackles the controversial topic of Rahab's profession. While some scholars try to paint her as an innkeeper, Shadia stands firm in highlighting Scripture's truth that Rahab was indeed a prostitute. Join us as we explore the redeeming power of God's grace in Rahab's life and how it symbolically reflects the story of the church body. The conversation takes an even deeper turn when Shadia shares her personal experiences and challenges faced while writing her latest Bible study, Rahab. Prepare to be inspired by her powerful testimony of how the Lord met her in profound ways during this project. Lastly, Stephanie and Shadia discuss the impact of our words and actions on others, even when we can't see the immediate fruit of our labor. Stay tuned as they dive into the incredible story of how God used Shadia's words to impact her own mother, leaving a lasting legacy of faith. We encourage you to listen to this thought-provoking and faith-strengthening conversation. It's bound to ignite your passion for redeeming stories and remind you of the incredible work God is doing in our lives and in the lives of those around us. Join us on this captivating journey of faith, redemption, and transformation! NEW! Here are 3 key takeaways from this episode: 1️⃣ God's redemption knows no bounds: Through the messy stories of Hagar, Tamar, Rahab, and Legion, we see how God can redeem the darkest of circumstances and bring beauty out of pain and trials. 2️⃣ Pray bold prayers: Shadia shares her personal experience of praying for the translation of Hagar into Arabic, a bold request that was answered six months later when she received a copy of the book being distributed in churches in Egypt and beyond. Let's be encouraged to pray bold prayers and trust that God can move mountains! 3️⃣ Embrace the true word: There is a temptation to alter Scripture for the sake of political correctness or to make it more palatable, but Shadia reminds us of the importance of not hiding from the true Word. Let's embrace the wisdom, goodness, and beauty of God's redemption, even when it challenges our preconceptions. NEW! QUESTIONS TO GO DEEPER, ON YOUR OWN OR WITH A FRIEND 1. How do you personally define a "messy story" and why do you think the speaker is attracted to them? 2. How does the story of Rahab challenge your understanding of redemption? 3. In what ways do you relate to the experiences of pain, betrayal, and heartache mentioned in this episode? 4. Have you ever prayed a bold prayer? If so, what was the result? If not, what would a bold prayer look like for you? 5. How does the story of Hagar being translated into Arabic and distributed in churches in Egypt and beyond illustrate the beauty of redemption? 6. What are your thoughts on Shadia's discussion about the word "zona" in the book of Joshua and the temptation to alter Scripture to fit certain narratives? 7. How does Rahab's story reflect the story of the church as a whole, with the church being the prostitute in need of rescue and redemption? 8. What are your thoughts on Shadia's emphasis on not hiding from the true Word in scripture when it comes to Rahab being referred to as a prostitute? 9. How has your faith been challenged and nurtured through studying Scripture and personal experiences, as Stephanie and Shadia mentioned? 10. Can you think of a time when you doubted the impact of your words or actions in sharing Christ with others, only to later realize that God's grace was working through you? ENTER THE GIVEAWAY FOR A SIGNED COPY OF "RAHAB" Signup here: https://kingsumo.com/g/mbmw1n/exclusive-rahab-media-tour-giveaway More about RAHAB here: http://rahabbiblestudy.com/ ABOUT SHADIA HRICHI Shadia shares, "I never imagined I'd become an author, but I was certainly a bookworm, to which a shoebox full of “Reader of the Year” awards my mother saved can attest. I've always loved to read … and still do. But there was one Book I never opened until years later. Because I was not raised to believe in God, I was 30 years old the first time I began to read the Bible. And oh, what a treasure I found! If only I had found it sooner . . . My teenage and young adult years were filled with both good and bad choices – triumphs and tragedies. Abortion, date rape, substance abuse, marital abuse and divorce left many wounds and scars. And yet, it is precisely these heartaches that God has gently used to invite me to know Him more—to deepen my faith and fall in love with Him again and again. God gives me courage to share some of my stories in the Bible studies I've written, such as: - RAHAB: Rediscovering the God Who Saves Me - TAMAR: Rediscovering the God Who Redeems Me - HAGAR: Rediscovering the God Who Sees Me - LEGION: Rediscovering the God Who Rescues Me - Worthy of Love: A Journey of Hope and Healing After Abortion I love studying and teaching the Bible – especially the amazing, but messy, stories of real people who faced real problems. In addition to receiving a masters in biblical and theological studies from Western Seminary, I received a masters in criminal justice from the State University of New York (I'm a nerd at heart). But God's Word is so beautiful, I'll never tire of reading it. Even before I entered seminary, God opened the door to begin a speaking ministry to share the beautiful truths of Who He is and His power of redemption. In the beginning, I was often invited to speak for pregnancy centers. While speaking for pregnancy centers remains a deep passion and joy, God has since broadened the ministry to have me speak at conferences, churches, and women's retreats. From there, God has invited me to serve Him by serving writers. In fact, I have a whole page specifically for writers, complete with workshops, such as Am I Ready to Write a Bible Study?, as well as coaching and other services. But perhaps my favorite is serving women's groups by joining them for virtual “Q&A and Get to Know the Author” zoom meetups. The truth is that I love digging deep into the Bible and sharing what God teaches me. In fact, one reader compared me to a scuba instructor—gently guiding readers into the beautiful depths of God's Word. I've only been scuba diving once (it was cool!), but my two favorite pastimes are studying the Bible and visiting the ocean. Perhaps it's a suitable analogy after all." Jesus Says “Self-Denial” Is Required of Jesus Followers: “let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me" MESSAGE SUMMARY: In a time in which we hear so much about self-help, self-image, and self-actualization, Jesus is saying self-denial is the way to life. Jesus tells us, in Matthew 16:24, that self-denial is a key element in following Him: “Then Jesus told his disciples, ‘If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.'". “Taking up one's cross” means to die to self-ambitions. When we die to our self-ambitious and put them on the cross, Jesus' life moves through us: “Not my will but Thy will.”. By denying self, we become alive in Jesus; and His Spirit flows through us – we experience eternal life and abundant life. TODAY'S PRAYER: Lord, everything in me resists following you into the garden of Gethsemane to fall on my face to the ground before you. Grant me the courage to follow you all the way to the cross, whatever that might mean for my life. And then, by your grace, lead me to resurrection life and power. In Jesus' name, amen. Scazzero, Peter. Emotionally Healthy Spirituality Day by Day (p. 100). Zondervan. Kindle Edition. TODAY'S AFFIRMATION: Today, I affirm that, because I am in Jesus Christ, I will trust in the Lord with all my heart. I will trust in the Lord with all of my heart and lean not on my own understanding. In all my ways I will seek to know Him, and He will make my pathways straight. From Proverbs 3:5f SCRIPTURE REFERENCE (ESV): Matthew 16:24; Mathew 10:38-39; Galatians 6:14-17; Psalms 141:1-10. Jesus Followers Are Expected, by God, to Confess their Sins and Plead for Forgiveness {Penitence} Real Time MESSAGE SUMMARY: Penitence is not a once in a lifetime occurrence. Penitence is a daily and moment by moment, real time, occurrence. None of us is perfect, and not one of us always does the will of God. Paul, in Romans 2:4-5, is unequivocal in establishing the need for your continuing penitence and the consequences of your not repenting of your sins on a real-time basis: “Or do you presume on the riches of his kindness and forbearance and patience, not knowing that God's kindness is meant to lead you to repentance? But because of your hard and impenitent heart you are storing up wrath for yourself on the day of wrath when God's righteous judgment will be revealed.". Therefore, we all need to repent and return to the Lord. You can become cocky and arrogant in your spiritual life – “I am a Christian; God has done this for me.”. As the Psalmist tells us in Psalms 32:5 of his confession and his penitence: “I acknowledged my sin to you, and I did not cover my iniquity; I said, ‘I will confess my transgressions to the LORD,' and you forgave the iniquity of my sin.". You can rest on our perceived laurels; but these perceptions, of personal goodness and righteousness, can lead you quickly to a need for your penitence. TODAY'S PRAYER: Most merciful God I confess that I have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what I have done, and by what I have left undone. I have not loved you with my whole heart; I have not loved my neighbors as myself. I am truly sorry and I humbly repent. For the sake of your son Jesus Christ, have mercy on me and forgive me; that I might delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of Your Name. Amen. TODAY'S AFFIRMATION: Today, because of I am filled with the Holy Spirit, I will not be controlled by my Heartlessness. Rather, I will walk in the Spirit's fruit of Kindness. “The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.” (Galatians 5:22f). God Loves You No Matter What You Have Done or Said About God – You Cannot Separate Yourself from God's Love MESSAGE SUMMARY: No one, including you, can separate you from the love of God. While we were and are still sinners, Jesus the Christ died for us. God loves you exactly where you are; God loves you no matter what you said about Him; and He loves you no matter what you have done. In Romans 5:8-11, Paul confirms God's unconditional love for us: “but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Since, therefore, we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God. For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life. More than that, we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.". TODAY'S PRAYER: Lord, I now take a deep breath and stop. So often I miss your hand and gifts in my life because I am preoccupied and anxious. Grant me the power to pause each day and each week to simply rest in your arms of love. In Jesus' name, amen. Scazzero, Peter. Emotionally Healthy Spirituality Day by Day (p. 132). Zondervan. Kindle Edition. TODAY'S AFFIRMATION: Today, Because of who I am in Jesus Christ, I will not be driven by Resentment. Rather, I will abide in the Lord's Compassion. “I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in Me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from Me you can do nothing.” (John 15:5). Cancel not! Rather Bear All Things, Love Your Enemies and Pray for Those Who Persecute You! MESSAGE SUMMARY: On Ash Wednesday we are invited to the observance of a Holy Lent. It is meant to include self-examination and repentance. We do not hear much about repentance. Here is a challenge. With the help of the Holy Spirit, examine how you respond to others who disagree with you. Examine not the content of the argument or disagreement. Examine your response. For we live in age where the culture teaches us to part ways, disassociate, and unfriend. The Cancel Culture is making its way into the life of all American churches in all denominations. So what if we have different opinions about vaccines, masks, homeschooling or the new store up the road. Are peacemakers meant to cancel others? Jesus followers are given the Holy Spirit precisely to make us more like Jesus, to think more like Jesus. How would Jesus respond? With love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control? Doesn't the love of Jesus always protect, always trust, always hope, always persevere? We are to love our neighbor as ourself! We can't control how others respond. We can control how we respond. Canceling ought not be the response of the Jesus follower. If we are meant to deliver good news, cancelling, unfriending, and disassociation cannot be on the table. You are invited to a Holy Lent, to self-examination and repentance. Jesus Explained that His Followers Would Both Pray and Fast, and Prayer and Fasting Are Matters of Heart Between His Followers and God MESSAGE SUMMARY: There are times when you need clarity, understanding, knowledge and insights from God about the specific issues that you are facing. In your personal relationship with God, the Lord will speak to you; but sometimes it takes both your listening and fasting to hear Him. Jesus, in Matthew 6:18, was speaking to the Apostles as well as those gathered for His “Sermon on the Mount” where he explained that praying and fasting are matters of the heart between Jesus Followers and God. Jesus assumes that his followers will fast: "that your fasting may not be seen by others but by your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you. Lay Up Treasures in Heaven.”. Also, when Joel received a Word when the land was to be destroyed, he called a fast (i.e. Joel 1:14): “Consecrate a fast; call a solemn assembly. Gather the elders and all the inhabitants of the land to the house of the LORD your God, and cry out to the LORD.”. Some things you are facing in your life must be dealt with by both prayer and fasting. Fasting releases a spiritual power – in your weakness, God is made strong in your life. Daniel's prayer, from Daniel 9:3-5, provides a context for asking direction from God: “Then I turned my face to the Lord God, seeking him by prayer and pleas for mercy with fasting and sackcloth and ashes. I prayed to the LORD my God and made confession, saying, ‘O Lord, the great and awesome God, who keeps covenant and steadfast love with those who love him and keep his commandments, we have sinned and done wrong and acted wickedly and rebelled, turning aside from your commandments and rules.'". TODAY'S PRAYER: Lord, you know how difficult it is for me to be in silence before you. At times it feels almost impossible, given the demands, distractions, and noise all around me. I invite you to lead me to a quiet, silent place before you — to a place where I can hear you as Elijah did. In Jesus' name, amen. Scazzero, Peter. Am I Ready to Pray? (Bude, Cornwall, UK) INTRODUCTIOIN -- Prayer is: 1) spending time with God – acknowledging God's presence in all our lives' activities; and 2) conversation with God – listening to and talking with God. Prayer reflects on our relationship with God. Why don't we pray. The Apostle James, in James 4:2-3, provides a perspective regarding Prayer Life: “You desire and do not have, so you murder. You covet and cannot obtain, so you fight and quarrel. You do not have, because you do not ask. You ask and do not receive, because you ask wrongly, to spend it on your passions." SUNDAY MESSAGE – In James 4:3, we are told: “You ask but do not receive, because you ask wrongly, to spend it on your passions.”. As followers of Jesus, we are given the awesome privilege of being able to come before God, the Creator of the Universe, in our prayers. We are given a multitude of alternatives for our prayers that include prayers of "petition" (praying for one's own needs) and prayers of "intercession" (praying for the needs of others). God wants prayers of "petition" from us -- all our needs and concerns should be brought to Him in prayer because He loves and cares for us. However, God want us to, also, focus on others and their needs (intercession) -- physical and spiritual. "Intercessory prayer” is fundamental to deepening our prayer life and our personal relationship with God. However, we often enter into our prayers unprepared – there is sin in our lives, or our prayers are all about “us”; and we seek “our will” and not “God's will”. Therefore, we need to learn to “pray rightly”. To “pray rightly”, we need to consider: “1) Am I “clean” before the Lord – have I confessed the known sins in my life that I have not repented? 2) Am I in “communion with others” – are there people with whom I am not at peace? 3) Am I “confident in God's Word” – do I believe God's promises are true? 4) Am I “committed to God's will” – am I committed to act on and obey God's answer to my prayers even though His answer is not my desire? 5) Am I “centered in the Holy Spirit” – am I focused and tuned in on the Lord, filtering out the “noise of the world”? and 6) Am I “concerned for God's Glory” – the ultimate purpose of our prayers is uplifting and glorifying God's name?”. Additionally, in both our worship and our prayers: “Are we expecting to encounter God?”. Remember, Jesus taught us that: 1) God is more ready to answer prayer than we are ready to pray; and 2) we must be persistent in our prayers until we have an answer. Pray specific prayers, in the Holy Spirit and in Scripture, for ourselves and for others -- be persistent. TODAY'S PRAYER: Keeping the Sabbath, Lord, will require a lot of changes in the way I am living life. Teach me, Lord, how to take the next step with this in a way that fits my unique personality and situation. Help me to trust you with all that will remain unfinished and to enjoy my humble place in your very large world. In Jesus' name, amen. Scazzero, Peter. Emotionally Healthy Spirituality Day by Day (p. 129). Zondervan. Kindle Edition. TODAY'S AFFIRMATION: I affirm that because of what God has done for me in His Son, Jesus, I AM RIGHTEOUS IN GOD'S EYES. God made Him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God. (2 Corinthians 5:21). This conversation was a true full-circle moment, and we're excited to share it with you!Tune in to hear us talk about...-What it's felt like for Michelle to pivot away from a multi-six-figure coaching business to focus on just one offer-How she's navigating trans inclusion work as a cis woman with a brand that markets to anyone who feels seen by the word "women"-The steps she's continuing to take to support her BIPOC clients, including partnering with a BIPOC business coach to host an affinity space within her program-The ways Michelle is evolving her business model to make it more sustainable and accessible-Why we need to allow ourselves to change direction and reject the idea that we have to do just one thing,,,and more!Connect with Michelle:Michelle's Instagram90 Day Business LaunchHer freebie workbook "Am I Ready to Be an Entrepreneur?"Contact Michelle to hear when the beta program's doors open!People and organizations mentioned in this episode:vp wrightYour Career HomecomingJoi Knows HowYou can support this podcast by joining us on Patreon! Today’s episode comes from a runner named Gordon who asked a question during a live webinar entitled “Am I Ready to Run? How to tell if its safe to start running again.” He asked, “Is it okay to run on a treadmill? I'm returning from a stress fracture injury. I read that a treadmill gives the exact same stress with every step versus, say a trail, but with COVID-19 and smoke, running outside is a challenge and all that." That is a great question! Because, there is a lot of evidence that treadmills cause the same repetitive stress in the same way that might lead to stress fractures in the foot. Today on the Doc on the Run podcast, we're talking about whether or not you should run on a treadmill when you're recovering from a stress fracture.
Overview The decision to share one’s story about living with depression, addiction, suicidal ideation, or any other emotional challenge is deeply personal and worthy of reflection. With the nonprofit I help oversee, United Suicide Survivors International, we encourage people with lived experience to ask themselves, “Am I Ready” (on-line course) before sharing their story publicly. By weighing the pros and cons of sharing and preparing strategies of self-care that are helpful during the sometimes challenging process of crafting the narrative, storytellers can be in a better position to make a difference. In this podcast I sit down with Cameron Stout, a securities defense lawyer who is boldly being “vocal, visible and visionary” in his industry by sharing his journey through and resilient recovery from depression and alcoholism. Attorneys are often type A professionals who are driven to succeed, yet often are reluctant to express vulnerability and share personal challenges. By speaking publicly about his recovery from major depression in 2013, and describing his seven years of sobriety, Cam reduces stigma, and helps others find the courage to be open. In addition to telling his story, Cam outlines the therapies, treatment, and wellness practices that have been key in his recovery process. As Cam will describe for us, his mission of being a storyteller has also been a large part of his own healing, as it can be for all of us. About Cameron Stout Cameron Stout.png Cameron Stout is a nationally recognized securities defense litigator and a mediator. In late 2012, his legal career was derailed for over a year by a major depressive episode that required hospitalization. As a result of several modes of therapy, the love of family, friends and colleagues, and his own hard work, Cam is standing on the other side of the abyss of mental illness, and is seven years sober. Cam describes his journey in a short video, and in an article in the Princeton Alumni Weekly: https://vimeo.com/230186411 https://paw.princeton.edu/article/essay-how-i-survived-depression Feeling better in many ways than he ever has, Cam is paying his resilient recovery forward by sharing his message of hope and recovery with students, educators, and other professionals. In July, 2018, Cam founded Stout Heart, Inc., a 501(c)(3) that supports the pro bono presentations that he makes to high school, college, and law students (including at Harvard and Stanford). www.stoutheart.org Cam’s message is timely and powerful: The pernicious stigma around these illnesses is a dangerously false narrative that must be stamped out. Mental health conditions are just that, health conditions, not weaknesses. They are not our fault, and there is tremendous hope for ongoing recovery and effective management of these challenges. In addition to candidly sharing his own lived experience, Cam discusses ways to identify and address mental health and addiction issues. He also describes his strategies for self-care, and how to build the mindful resilience and the perspective that we all need in order to learn, work, and live with a lighter heart and a more focused mind. Cam graduated in 1980 from Princeton University, where he was a member of the varsity tennis team. Following his graduation with honors from the University of San Francisco School of Law, Cam practiced for decades as a securities litigator, defending financial services companies in customer disputes and employment cases. He is an active mediator in those practice areas as well. The very proud father of two adult children, Cam now lives in Princeton, New Jersey. How can we work WITH our kids to help create healthy tech boundaries? Today’s special guest is a mom and a screen time expert who has some practical tools to help us collaborate as a family. Andrea Davis and her husband, Tyler, live in beautiful Hood River, Oregon. They are the parents of five children: four girls and one boy. Andrea is a former teacher, an outdoor enthusiast, and has been a stay-at-home for almost 15 years. She and Tyler co-created the website, Better Screen Time, where they share positive strategies for screens and technology so parents can worry less and connect more with their kids. Highlights from this episode: -When you’re considering how much screen time is appropriate, look around. Take an assessment of what really matters. It’s the relationships and connections we have with family. -Keep an eye on what’s important. Worry less and connect more. -Pay attention to “stopping cues” when you are on your screens. Consider boundaries for health. -How do you want to fill the white space in your life? Hopefully with nourishing relationships rather than technology. -Develop a relationship with kids so that they come to YOU when they are curious about something or have questions. Don’t let the search engine be the default. -Be proactive when talking to your kids about sex and intimacy. -Consider the emotional response we have with tech. Try not to use it as a pacifier for ourselves or our children. Consider other healthier alternatives that will help us develop coping skills. -Develop practical interactive ways to get your kids to build their own tech safety solutions. Getting them involved helps them understand the “why.” -When you are setting or enforcing boundaries, you might get push-back from your kids--and that’s OK! What Trends Should Baby Boomers Be Aware of? Richard Eisenberg, the Managing Editor of PBS’ Nextavenue.org joins our retirement podcast to share his insights. Next Avenue is the PBS site for people 50+, where he is also the editor of the Money and Work & Purpose channels. Previously, he was Executive Editor of Money magazine, Front Page Finance Editor of Yahoo! and Special Projects Director/Money Editor at Good Housekeeping. He is the author of two books: How to Avoid a Midlife Financial Crisis and The Money Book of Personal Finance. We talk with Richard Eisenberg about Next Avenue, older workers, and employers, the key trends Baby Boomers should be aware of, and what he’s learned from his research on Blue Zones. _______________________ Wise Quote Q. What’s the one thing that people who are planning for retirement may not be thinking about but really should be? Richard Eisenberg: “If it’s okay, I think I’ll give you two. One of them is will I be able to keep working part-time if I want to. There’ve been some interesting studies that show a lot of people in their fifties and sixties expect to work part-time in retirement. And yet when you look at the surveys of retirees, you find that a very small percentage of them are working in retirement and many of them aren’t because of health reasons. So I think people just need to think, well, is it realistic that I’ll be able to work in retirement? Partly, you know what, I’d be healthy enough to do it, but also will I be able to find work? Will I be able to get hired or will I be able to start a business? So I think that’s one thing I would tell people to think about. And the other is if you are in a long-term relationship and have a spouse or partner are the two of you on the same page about retirement? We’ve done a few articles on Next Avenue about couples and retirement and have seen some studies that show that frequently couples don’t talk with each other much about what they expect retirement to be like for them. How they plan to spend their time and their money. And then what happens is they get retired and then one of them is planning to travel a lot and the other is not planning to travel at all? And they don’t want to be living differently, but they hadn’t really thought it out because they never had to.
