Why I Don't Tell Clients to Quit Their Jobs and Follow Their Purpose This might surprise you—but I rarely tell my clients to quit their jobs in the name of purpose. Even though I guide women through life transitions and help them reconnect with their sense of purpose, I'm not in the business of promoting impulsive leaps. Why? Because purpose isn't always about walking away—it's about walking toward. In this episode, I share the deeper truth behind why staying—at least for a while—can be the most powerful move you make. We explore: ✨ Why quitting too soon can dysregulate your nervous system ✨ How financial pressure can smother your creativity ✨ The truth about bringing your patterns with you ✨ What to do instead if you feel that nudge for more I also offer simple next steps if you're ready to begin your purpose journey without burning it all down. If you've been feeling the stirrings of something new—but aren't quite sure what or how to begin—this episode will meet you right where you are. Turning 50: Golden Insights and Life Lessons

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 25, 2025 34:49

In this episode, I share my reflections on turning 50 and the five most important lessons I've learned along the way. Recording on the eve of my 50th birthday, I discuss how this milestone feels different - bringing joy rather than the emotional difficulty I've experienced with past birthdays. My word for the year is "receive," and I share how I celebrated with my soul tribe through a meaningful three-day gathering. My Five Life Lessons at 50: 1. Unlearning for Potential - We're born with all our potential already within us. Our work is to peel away the adaptations we created to feel loved and safe, returning to our essential self. 2. Growth Comes from Challenges as Much as Your Successes - Our struggles and "mud" become the foundation for our growth. As Thich Nhat Hanh says, "No mud, no lotus." 3. Space is Where All Wisdom Lies - By creating space in our busy lives, we connect with our innate wisdom. Our answers aren't found in external sources but within ourselves. 4. Become Your Own Best Friend - Through my IFS therapy work, I've learned what it truly means to have compassion for all parts of myself. When we understand why our parts exist, we can soften toward ourselves. 5. Connection is Our Lifeblood - Our relationships hold the most meaning in life. As the Maori proverb says, "What is the most important thing? The people, the people, the people." I'm still learning these lessons every day. I'd love to hear which ones resonate with you most! The Path from Self-Abandonment to Self-Honouring

In this episode, we dive into the subtle ways self-abandonment shows up in our lives and how it can leave us feeling disconnected and unfulfilled. Self-abandonment occurs when we ignore our true needs in favour of pleasing others or meeting societal expectations, often leading to emotional exhaustion, burnout, and physical neglect. Key Patterns of Self-Abandonment: People-Pleasing: Prioritising others' needs over your own. High Achievement: Masking deeper emotional needs with success. The "Strong One" Role: Avoiding vulnerability by appearing unshakable. Dissociation: Disconnecting from emotions as a survival mechanism. Suppressing Emotions: Avoiding feelings like anger or fear due to past conditioning. Neglecting Physical Needs: Ignoring rest, medical care, or body signals. Self-Criticism: Harsh internal dialogue rooted in past fear or rejection. These patterns can leave us feeling exhausted, unfulfilled, and disconnected from our authentic selves. Over time, this can lead to a loss of clarity and purpose. The Cost of Self-Abandonment: The emotional toll of ignoring our true needs is high—it leads to burnout, confusion, and a lack of fulfilment. Over time, we lose touch with our authentic selves. Solutions for Reclaiming Your Authentic Self: Set Boundaries: Learn to say “no” and protect your emotional health. Reclaim Vulnerability: Embrace your true emotions and show up authentically. Nurture Your Body: Listen to your body's needs and prioritize self-care. Release Self-Criticism: Challenge the internal critic and practice self-compassion. Heal Childhood Wounds: Address limiting beliefs learned in childhood that fuel self-abandonment. Healing from self-abandonment starts with self-awareness and small, intentional steps to reconnect with your true self. If you've been feeling disconnected or stuck, this episode will help you understand the root causes of these patterns and provide tools to start your journey toward healing and purpose. Your Momentum Map: 5 Steps to a Winning Week

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 3, 2024 17:27

Welcome back to the podcast! Today's episode is all about setting up your week for success with clarity, focus, and momentum. If you're feeling overwhelmed or find it challenging to prioritize what's most important, this episode is for you. Episode Highlights: The importance of intentional planning for gaining weekly clarity and focus. How I use a “primer” approach in my membership program for brain-dumping and prioritizing weekly tasks. Introduction to the "START" Process—a 5-step framework to bring momentum to your week, month, or any new project. The START Process: S - Set Your Intention: Anchor yourself by deciding what matters most this week. Think about William James' quote: "My experience is what I agree to attend to." Focus on what you want to create and how you want to show up. T - Tune Into the Feeling: It's not just about what you want to achieve, but who you want to be in the process. Feelings like calm, confidence, or joy can be intentionally generated to support your goals. A - Anchor a Habit: Identify a small, actionable habit that supports your focus. For example, journaling, mindfulness, or a simple breathing exercise can help ground you in your desired state of being. R - Reflect: Check in on your progress regularly. Are you aligned with your goals and intentions? Adjust and pivot as needed to stay on track. T - Take Time for Yourself: Schedule “white space” to recharge, get creative, and connect with yourself. This time is essential for refilling your mental and emotional reserves. Key Takeaway: By setting an intention, tuning into the right feelings, anchoring supportive habits, reflecting often, and giving yourself space to recharge, you can create a week filled with purpose, productivity, and ease. Too Restless to Meditate? Here's What You Can Do Instead

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 18, 2024 24:13

In this episode, we dive into the challenges faced by those who feel too restless for traditional meditation practices. Inspired by a recent question from a workshop attendee, I explore how high-energy personalities and those who struggle with restlessness can still cultivate mindfulness and self-awareness without having to sit in stillness. We often think meditation is the only way to build resilience and manage stress, but that's not true for everyone. I share personal insights from my own experience, including how I found it difficult to meditate and what alternative methods I used to stay connected and present. You'll learn about the deeper reasons for restlessness, such as avoiding uncomfortable emotions and childhood conditioning. We'll also touch on the role of dopamine and how overstimulation from social media and modern life can amplify feelings of discontentment. If you find sitting in meditation too difficult, don't worry — I offer several other tools, including mindful movement, yoga, and even chanting, that can help you find balance without the pressure to "just sit still." Key Topics: Restlessness and Personality Types: - Why some of us are more prone to restlessness? - The impact of childhood experiences and emotional avoidance. - The link between restlessness, dopamine, and overstimulation from our fast-paced world. Restlessness and Emotions: - How restlessness can stem from avoiding deeper emotions like sadness, guilt, or shame. - The feeling of being pulled in many directions without fully being present. Alternative Mindfulness Practices: - Mindful movement like yoga, tai chi, and mindful walking. - The power of chanting and how it provides an active form of mindfulness. - How guided meditations can be a great starting point for those who struggle with stillness. Dopamine and Restlessness: - How dopamine fuels our restlessness and the role of modern technology in overstimulating our reward systems. - The addictive loop of seeking constant stimulation and why it depletes our sense of contentment. Practical Takeaways: Short meditations: Starting with bite-sized practices (just 3–5 minutes) can help ease you into mindfulness. Mindful movement: Engaging in activities like yoga or walking can be an entry point to presence without the pressure to sit still. Tuning into your senses: A simple walk in nature while focusing on the sounds, sights, and smells around you can be just as powerful as meditation. Be kind to yourself: If meditation feels challenging, know that there are other ways to cultivate mindfulness that align better with your energy. Join the Conversation: If this resonates with you, or if you have a restless part of yourself that you're working with, I'd love to hear from you. What's been working for you? Leaning Into Discomfort: The Path to True Growth

In this deeply reflective episode, we explore the profound power of discomfort and how leaning into it can lead to significant personal growth. Inspired by my own journey of sharing vulnerable truths in a previous episode, I delve into the surprising lessons I learned about discomfort, especially in how we receive care and support from others. I discuss the practice of embracing small discomforts daily, as a way to build resilience and prepare for the bigger challenges in life. We also break down the “Motivational Triad” — and explain why understanding this model can help us update our systems and shift from our primitive responses to more empowered, growth-oriented actions. Key Takeaways: 1. Discomfort as Growth: Discomfort is a practice, not just a one-time experience. By leaning into small discomforts regularly, we prepare ourselves to handle more significant challenges and grow from them. 2. The Motivational Triad: Our primitive brain is wired to seek pleasure, avoid pain, and conserve energy. By understanding these instincts, we can consciously choose discomfort and step into our growth zone. 3. Protective Parts: Explore how protective behaviours like people-pleasing and high-achieving are strategies we develop to avoid discomfort. Recognizing these patterns is the first step toward choosing a different, more empowering path. 4. Vulnerability and Discomfort: Vulnerability and discomfort go hand in hand. Sharing our truths, even when it feels risky, opens us up to deeper connections and personal growth. Why Listen: If you've ever felt stuck in a cycle of comfort, this episode will inspire you to start embracing discomfort as a powerful tool for growth. Whether it's taking cold showers, having courageous conversations, or setting boundaries, we explore practical ways to step into discomfort and experience the transformation that comes with it. How much joy is getting stolen? Without realising it, comparison imprints and leaves us with thoughts such as: ‘I'm am I not where I should be' ‘Why am I not where they are' ‘I'm not achieving enough' ‘Why am I stuck' The problem is these questions don't move you forward; they keep you where you are. In the coaching/therapy space that I work in, self-awareness is often heralded to be the key to personal growth and fulfilment. Self-awareness researcher Tasha Eurich discovered that 95% of people believe they are self-aware, however, only 12–15% possess both high internal and external self-awareness (I spoke about Tasha Eurich's archetypes previously). Eurich's research suggests that there's a profound opportunity within each of us to deepen our understanding of ourselves and the world around us. I believe self-awareness is the most powerful practice we can embody to discover true emotional freedom and deeper connections. Imagine for a moment that every external trigger, every challenge and every uncomfortable conversation could serve as a stepping stone towards greater self-awareness. As we peel back the layers of our consciousness, we not only enrich our own lives but also become catalysts for transformation in the lives of those around us. Five Powerful Letting Go Rituals: Burying: Ground the act of letting go by physically connecting with the earth. Burning: Use fire's transformative power to release what no longer serves you. Cleansing with Water: Symbolic immersion in water for purification and renewal. Journaling: Express emotions and thoughts on paper, a practice backed by research. Feeling It: Mindfully connect with emotions and sensations as a vital step in the letting go process. Movement: Engage in intentional movement to release stored energy and shift perspective. Closing Thoughts: Explore these rituals and find what resonates with you. Share your experiences and let me know which rituals work best in your letting go process. You can either rush headlong into the year, taking with you the same beliefs, patterns and habits of the past year or you can take a moment to reflect, learn, and pave the way for a more aligned and purposeful year. Each year I practice an end-of-year review ritual and I have shared it with hundreds of others, who have also made it part of their annual ritual. There is no doubt that most of us feel constantly ‘on' and unable to switch our minds off. It is unsurprising we have a global sleep issue and feel so stuck in our heads. One of the reasons for this is we haven't properly shut down from one task to the next, we essentially have too many tabs open. Or why it is so hard to stop scrolling your phone when you know you should be doing something much more productive or meaningful? Or perhaps, why you often reach for the sweet treat in the afternoon rather than have the carrots and hummus in the fridge? Celebrate Your Wins

My husband James recently said to me, “We should drink some of that champagne down in the garage, it's getting old!”. I'm embarrassed to admit some of the bottles down there I've had since London days but they're extra special ones and I've been waiting for just the right occasion to celebrate. And this is what we often do in life. We save our celebrations for the really big occasions, we let the special moments or successes slip by or we forget to celebrate. Here's the thing, you don't need to have champagne to celebrate but you DO need to celebrate your successes often (ideally daily) to truly find joy and fulfilment in life. As a coach, I am very passionate about taking moments in life to acknowledge and celebrate where we are and what we have achieved. It is so easy to get onto the life treadmill and get so focused on the endpoint or goal that we forget to invite in the joy of the micro wins along the way. On the podcast today, we'll explore the transformative power of celebrating success and its profound benefits for your well-being. Join us as we dive into the joys of celebrating your wins, no matter their size. Discover how celebration increases pleasure and motivation by activating your brain's natural reward system. We'll uncover the role of dopamine, the neurotransmitter associated with pleasure and reward, and how it reinforces the behaviours that lead to success. Moreover, we'll explore how celebration boosts positivity, counterbalances daily negativity, and enhances your mental and emotional well-being. By shifting your focus to gratitude and celebration, you can rewire your brain and generate positive emotions. To wrap up, we'll provide practical ideas on infusing the celebration of your wins into your life. Consider recording your achievements, sharing them with loved ones, and creating meaningful rituals. These practices will help you fully embrace the power of celebration and transform your life. So tune in and prepare to be inspired and motivated as we uncover the incredible benefits of celebrating your wins and successes. Get ready to embark on a journey of joy, fulfilment, and happiness through the power of celebrating your wins. And remember, everything, including us, has an expiry date so don't leave those champagne moments too long!

Some signs you are an empath include You are sensitive and feel things deeply You feel overwhelmed or fatigued by crowds or large groups of people You are naturally intuitive and sense things quickly You are sensitive to sounds, smells and other sensations You need time to regroup and recover from certain people or situations. Hello, I'm not sure how you are feeling in 2023 but for me I am already feeling different. Maybe I am entering a new phase in my life or perhaps it is the result of living through a pandemic, but I am not feeling that I want to lead into this year with the same drive, push or constant “doingness” as I have in other years. Usually I start the year in an ambitious way - setting resolutions, goals and projects for the year, but this year I'm taking a different approach. A softer approach. For most of us success has been equated with hard work, hardening up and doing the hard yards. This is very much the masculine approach to achievement and it requires balance to be sustainable. If we keep being so hard on ourselves we may find ourselves in a place of exhaustion, overwhelm or burnout. What if you could get your desired results in a different way? What if you could soften, allow, slow down, receive guidance and still find success (more than you could imagine)? This is what I want to share with you on the podcast today: What it means to soften into yourself Why we need to soften Tapping into the masculine and feminine energies Practices that help you soften the way you experience life I hope you enjoy listening as much as I enjoyed sharing these insights with you

As we were racing to the ferry yesterday, my Mum driving her blue electric car, kids in the back and me tensely looking at the clock with minutes to spare, a bus drove towards us with Merry Christmas as the destination. My Mum laughed - ha Merry Christmas as if to say who has time to have a Merry Christmas. I missed the ferry by a minute. We are sold the idea that this time of year is meant to be the happiest time of year but many of us are so busy or distracted we have forgotten to make time and space for the joy. Even when we are with those we love we are often running through to-do lists in our head and aren't really present to what is. It often feels like we are flat out preparing for the joy rather than enjoying the moment we are in. This doesn't just apply to Christmas, it can apply to our whole life. Perhaps there are some aspects of your life where your feel like you very confident and others you notice you really lack confidence? It is quite normal to feel that polarity. Your confidence might be challenged when you are are on your growth edge, that place where you are not good or competent at something but you know it is required for you to grow (i.e. putting yourself out there or public speaking). Perhaps you have a harsh inner (or outer) critic that has been beating you down for some time and it has left you questioning your abilities and worth? Or have you been moulding, pleasing or adapting yourself to meet others expectations and along the way you have lost your true self? One thing I have come to realise is confidence is not static or black and white. Our confidence is something that goes up and down based on where we are on our journey, who we are with and how competent we feel about what we are doing. Today on the podcast I'm delighted to have special guest Ben Fauske on the show. He is a confidence researcher, coach and expert in the field of confidence.
