Torri's down to her last drinking friend (RIP, she's pregnant now), and it's got her and Daffnee spiraling into a much bigger conversation about alcohol. They trace their drinking history all the way back to their first sips (Daffnee's Mexican household where a Corona at dinner was normal, Torri's Wisconsin upbringing where getting a DUI barely raises an eyebrow),  through the reckless college years, the family patterns that shaped how they drink now, and the health reasons that eventually changed everything for both of them. They get real about sober curiosity, what it's like loving someone who can't drink safely, mocktails (Torri has opinions), and how to actually celebrate a big moment when the champagne isn't on the table anymore. Funny, honest, and probably going to make you think differently about your own next round. Dr. Fauci was paid a salary higher than the President and qualified for the largest federal retirement pension in US history. Fox News reports Fauci and his wife Dr. Christine Grady “reported a combined $12.6 million net worth in 2021” – up from $7.6 million in 2019, before the pandemic. But after his former top advisor Dr. David Morens pleaded guilty to attempting to conceal COVID documents, Fauci's team has launched the “Anthony S. Fauci M.D. Legal Defense Fund” in preparation for expected the costs of his legal cases. “If Fauci is tried in federal court,” writes John Leake, “the entire rotten edifice of complicit federal agencies would also be exposed, so don't hold your breath for the Justice Department to prosecute him.” Also on today's show: chef Palmer Fortune, who got his sixth DUI in November 2005 with $120 to his name, borrowed $5,000 to get into a North Georgia recovery house, and stayed 19 months. He now owns Palmer's Hot Chicken, Porch, and Palmer's Village Café on St. Simon's Island, Georgia, and hires employees working to get sober.    Everyone is talking about Harrison Butker's 69 yard field goal Saturday in Tampa but remember, it's the pre-season.  Sure, it looks like real football, sometimes, but it's not.  Not even the kicks.  Last year a Jags kicker hit a 70 yarder.   But you won't even see teams try this in the regular season when the NFL watches over all the kicking balls like a hawk.    The Royals are just unstoppable right now as they win their 8th game in a row.  What could have been this year if the Royals just had 1 or 2 pitchers in the bullpen.    Monster Energy drink is the new sponsor of the Big 12 Conference and it's already controversial.  And Monster loves it.    A new report suggest Tony Romo could be on his way out at CBS Sports after getting a DUI.    A high ranking member of Iran's Parliament has spoken publicly that Iranians could be starving soon and that will not be sustainable for the regime.  More news on the economic D-Day are set top be revealed Monday.    A hospital in Nashville mixes up drugs and botches multiple surgeries.  The Negro Leagues Museum in KC has seen a big bump in traffic for one specific reason.  A new covid shot study of over 8 million people has bad, bad news for what they did to us.  A teachers union president asks for people to NOT shop at Target... so I think I will go get some stuff.    And our Final Final is a football player that got dissed by Tom Hanks at Travis and Taylor's wedding.

Blowing four times the legal limit on a breathalyzer usually means one thing, but in 2015, a judge dismissed a DWI because the driver's own gut was fermenting alcohol from an ordinary carb-heavy dinner. It's called auto-brewery syndrome, and the fuel it runs on is the same load your muscle is supposed to be clearing from your blood. In this solo episode, Dr. Gabrielle Lyon discusses:How gut yeast overgrowth turns everyday carbs like pasta, bread, and rice into ethanol that registers as real intoxication, brain fog, dizziness, and allThe specific risk factors that open the door: dysbiosis, SIFO, repeated antibiotic use, and poorly controlled diabetes or fatty liverThe three-part protocol to correct it, reduce the yeast burden, remove the carbohydrate fuel, and rebuild the microbiome, plus the carbohydrate challenge test, most doctors never runWhy skeletal muscle is your body's primary site for clearing blood sugar, and how an under-muscled body drifts into the same insulin-resistant, dysbiotic state that lets fermentation take holdWhether or not you'll ever face this rare diagnosis, you'll walk away understanding that gut health and muscle health share one supply chain and that defending your muscle is how you starve the problem at its root.Study & References:Woman beats DWI — her body brews alcohol (CBS News, 2015): https://www.cbsnews.com/news/woman-beats-dwi-with-rare-defense-her-body-brews-alcohol/Cordell & McCarthy (2013), Int. Steve Palmer is joined by private investigator Scott Shepherd of Justified Investigations for the inaugural installment of our new series, "What Would We Do?" Together, they dig deep into the highly-publicized case of Bryan Kohberger, the man who pled guilty to the infamous quadruple homicide of University of Idaho students, but is now seeking to withdraw his plea.Steve Palmer and Scott Shepherd walk listeners through their approach if Kohberger called on them for help: Would they take his case? What are the legal standards around withdrawing a guilty plea? How would they investigate claims of mistakes or missed evidence, and is there any hope for overturning such a high-profile conviction?Drawing on real-world experience with post-conviction and appellate cases, the duo explains the legal and investigatory checklists they'd follow, what pitfalls and optics matter, and the hard realities of mounting a defense when the evidence seems stacked and the system favors finality. This episode offers a rare, insider perspective on handling notorious cases, the science around DNA and forensic evidence, and the cold calculus of criminal defense.3 Key Takeaways:Thorough Post-Conviction Review Is Essential: The process isn't about simply retrying a case. It means digging deep, ordering transcripts, analyzing legal standards, and determining if any manifest injustice occurred. Every angle, document, and expert report must be scrutinized anew.Scientific Evidence Requires Expert Re-examination: DNA, forensic, and cell phone evidence must be independently re-analyzed, not just accepted at face value. Even seemingly overwhelming DNA evidence can be misinterpreted or inconclusive without proper expert consultation.Finality vs. Justice: The justice system is structured to resist reopening resolved cases. Unless there's a clear showing of manifest injustice, such as newly discovered exculpatory evidence or demonstrable ineffective counsel, courts are unlikely to allow plea withdrawals.Moments09:36 Proving manifest injustice12:39 Examining plea advisement and relief17:28 Analyzing DNA Evidence21:52 Gas station surveillance clues29:47 Consulting with a medical expert36:48 Lab testing and protocol differences40:45 Investigator's approach to facts48:19 Analyzing vehicle video evidence52:14 Covering up evidence activities58:28 Negotiating plea deals01:02:34 Discussing legal challenges in evidenceSubmit your questions to www.lawyertalkpodcast.com.Recorded at Channel 511.Stephen E. Mark shared a pre-marriage story about bolting from a Virgin Islands hotspot his then-fiancée hated and, in the process, missing a chance to meet Simon Cowell — plus a strong warning to stay away from Orange County beaches right now, especially Seal Beach, which is overrun with invasive stingrays. Timmy played Bellio’s Emmy-worthy sales video that she spent the whole weekend making (thank you, AI!), even though the sales team wasn’t feeling it — you can still check it out on the ConwayShow Instagram. On the darker side, a car slammed full-speed into the back of a truck on the 5 in Sylmar in what looked like a possible suicide attempt, and a high-speed pursuit ended near the Cahuenga Pass with a DUI driver and a second person arrested. The hour wrapped with the growing travel trend of visiting places just because a movie was filmed there, including Meryl Streep weighing in on the hardest part of shooting in Milan. Today we have Dan. He is 44 years old from Denver, CO, and he took his last drink of alcohol in February of 2025.   This episode is brought to you by:   Sign up and get 10% off: Better Help Sober Link sign up and claim your $100 enrollment bonus   Over the last six months, we have been working on a book called This is How We Quit. It is a compilation of 24 sobriety stories that will be released on August 31st, 2026. To coincide with the release, Recovery Elevator is doing a free online event to celebrate the launch. More details on that event are coming soon!   [03:15] Thoughts from Paul:   Paul shares with us his history with the guest today. They were close friends in high school; they played football together and drank plenty of beers at parties together. They lost communication over the years, but by happenstance and a lost wallet, they reconnected last year. Since then, they went on a trip to Sonora, Mexico to find reptiles and also went to their high school reunion together.   [05:49] Paul introduces Dan:   Dan is 44 years old, lives in Westminster, CO and took his last drink in February 2025. He was born and raised in Vail to wonderful parents and was close with his siblings. He is currently engaged and works in commercial construction sales. Dan enjoys spending time outside mountaineering, trail running and enjoying the arts. He recently rediscovered his love of reptiles and amphibians.   Dan says he was very shy and reserved growing up. He had his first drink right before freshman year of high school. He felt a sense of ease and that he could talk to people. He recalls thinking that this was the solution and how normal people must feel all the time. Through high school, Dan's drinking was minimal and he doesn't feel he ever was loss in control.   In college, Dan says his alcohol consumption went through the roof. Frequently drinking beers with friends at the dorms or at keg parties, Dan remembers the hangovers were pretty tough. He would focus on school during the week just waiting for Friday night. He felt the drinking was something he could control.   After graduating college, Dan went into the sales industry. He moved back to Vail and had a girlfriend and two roommates that he enjoyed drinking with. In the mid-2000's, Dan says the secrecy of his alcoholism began to rear its head. He was being told he drank too much. The signs were showing in his behavior, his hangovers were getting worse, he was missing work and other obligations. In 2007, Dan began working in a resort community in Dominican Republic. A few years later he began using other drugs in addition to drinking daily. He continuously would try to hide how much he was using until a coworker pushed him into treatment.     After a divorce, Dan moved to Denver and thought drinking might be different this time. He thought he should be able to have a pint with friends after work, but within a few weeks he was drinking in the mornings to avoid the shakes. After his first DUI, Dan was able to get and stay sober from 2019 until 2022.   Once again, he thought things would be different. Over the course of two years, Dan was in and out of mental health and rehab facilities. He struggled to keep a job and went through a second divorce.   In mid-February last year, Dan's neighbor called a friend to check on him. Dan was taken to the emergency room not knowing who his friend was or where he was. He was just trying to escape the hallucinations he was having; drinking was fun for him anymore.   Dan began going back to 12 step programs after this and started working hard on his recovery. Over the past year, he has found a great job, has a fiancé that doesn't drink but knows his history, has been able to help other friends with their addictions, spend more time in nature, and finally loves himself again.  Dan continues with his therapy and knows his story isn't over.   Recovery Elevator We took the elevator down. Deanna is sharing a part of her story she never thought she would tell publicly. After growing up in a deeply controlling religious environment, she entered adulthood without a clear understanding of boundaries, consent, or her own self-worth, leaving her vulnerable to relationships filled with manipulation, coercive control, abuse, and addiction.  She opens up about being groomed and sexually coerced by a partner, losing herself in unhealthy relationships, and turning to alcohol until a DUI and three months in jail became the wake-up call that ultimately saved her life. Through sobriety, recovery, and learning to trust herself, Deanna began rebuilding her identity and discovering that the family she'd always dreamed of didn't have to look the way she'd been taught. Send us Fan MailRetirement should be the beginning of your next meaningful chapter—not the end of your purpose. What happens when your career ends and the title, routine, responsibilities, and identity that shaped your life suddenly change? In this powerful episode of the Remarkable People Podcast, David Pasqualone sits down with Chris Maduri, founder of Vibrant Retirement, to explore how to find purpose after retirement, rebuild your identity beyond work, deepen your faith, and create a meaningful second act.Chris shares much more than retirement advice. He opens up about his own remarkable journey through adoption, struggles with identity, the devastating loss of his best friend, alcohol, divorce, multiple DUIs, jail, and the spiritual transformation that followed.During one of the lowest seasons of his life, Chris began reading the Bible, slowing down, becoming still, and developing a deeper relationship with God. That process helped him begin seeing himself differently—not according to his failures, income, career, achievements, or the opinions of other people, but through a completely different understanding of identity, grace, responsibility, and purpose. In this conversation, you'll discover:• Why financial preparation alone does not prepare you for retirement• How career and achievement can become dangerously connected to identity• Why you should begin designing your “second act” years before retirement• How to balance work, family, health, faith, and enjoying life now• Why stillness, prayer, listening, and self-awareness matter• How Chris rebuilt his life after addiction, DUIs, divorce, and jail• Why failure does not mean your life or purpose is over• How small acts of service can reveal a much larger purpose• Why purpose ultimately has to extend beyond yourself• How to stop endlessly preparing and begin taking meaningful action• Why you do not need to be perfect before you can add value to someone else's lifeOne of Chris's most powerful insights from the episode:“If you're looking for purpose, it has to be outside of you. No one's purpose is to help themselves.”Whether you are 25, 45, 65, approaching retirement, already retired, experiencing a major life transition, or simply wondering, “What does God want me to do next?”—this conversation is for you.Your career may eventually end.Your job title may change. But if you are still here, your life still matters—and there is still good you can do.━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

Send us Fan MailMichigan lawyer Patrick Barone is the third Beat the Prosecution podcast guest who has both attended the Trial Lawyers College and been active with the National College for DUI Defense. Patrick for years pursued a DWI defense focus before attending the TLC, and then he jumped both feet forward into intensive learning and training with psychodrama -- which is a major feature of the Trial Lawyers College that has been covered numerous times on this podcast -- becoming certified in psychodrama after many years of devoting substantial time to this approach of psychotherapy and working out challenges through role playing and reverse role playing, and much more.  As his and his wife Elizabeth Corby's Michigan Psychodrama Center page says, Patrick is a Board Certified trainer, educator and practitioner of psychodrama, sociometry and group psychotherapy, which is no small feat to add to an already busy criminal defense law practice. Listen as Patrick addresses with Fairfax criminal defense lawyer Jon Katz how psychodrama can be used for lawyers to prepare their entire trial and courtroom presentations, and prepare their clients to testify. Patrick talks about the possibility of speaking from the first person as the breathalyzer machine in a DUI case, taking exception to the breath test operator who does not enable the machine to do its job properly by not inspecting the suspect's mouth for foreign objects, to preclude the machine from testing for mouth alcohol rather than deep lung alcohol. Patrick  tells of one instance about using psychodrama doubling to relate and connect directly with his client. He talks about using psychodrama on himself to work out his issues with authority, in order to unblock his challenging interactions with a judge he repeatedly encounters. He differentiates the difference between righteous indignation at a police officer during cross examination, and alienating jurors who do not perceive a justification to be indignant. He talks about advocating in the moment, and understanding others from their perspective and from putting ourselves into their shoes. Beyond all that, Patrick talks of pursuing a pre-med path in college and then retooling to be a lawyer over such matters as his strong support for a robustly protected Second Amendment. He repeatedly writes about artificial intelligence for lawyers. Each month, he and his wife hold psychodrama sessions. Patrick makes a good point that often the psychodramatists in the room are not lawyers, and the lawyers are usually not psychodramatists. He is both. This Beat the Prosecution episode is also available on YouTube at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SPdJ-7Tf_Zc and https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/winning-by-integrating-with-the-moment-patrick-barone/id1721413675?i=1000783081810This podcast with Fairfax, Virginia criminal / DUI lawyer Jon Katz is playable on all devices at podcast.BeatTheProsecution.com. A cloudy start to the day with some rain likely later this morning. More rain likely all this weekend. Sadly, someone in Illinois won the $1 billion Powerball jackpot last night…but if you're looking to play again in the future, maybe using A.I. can help? Also in the news this morning, Winona will not be replacing it's flock cameras that were recently stolen, a horrific murder/suicide at a daycare in Minnesota, a recall on certain Tesla models, Karoline Leavitt announces she's leaving the White House as the press secretary, and more charges for Nick Reiner in the killing of his parents. In sports, the Brewers lost again to the Padres yesterday & get swept in San Diego, the MLB Field of Dreams game is tonight on Netflix, and the NFL preseason also kicks off tonight! A record number of people tuned in for the NFL's Hall of Fame game, Russell Westbrook announces his retirement from the NBA, the Lakers get sold for the second time in as many years, and the NASCAR All-Star race is returning to the track in North Wilkesboro next season. We talked about what's on TV & streaming today/tonight. Plus, an Avenged Sevenfold fan gets brought on stage to sing with the band at a recent show in Canada, and a new ride at Universal Studios Hollywood is upsetting some of the neighbors with how loud the ride can be. A heart-warming story about a dog suffering from seizures who got a new best friend when the family brought home a pet duck. And a new medication is having success with certain people dealing with muscular dystrophy. On Thursday mornings we ask each other hypothetical questions, and Brian's question for Jean was: "If you were a wrestler, what would your gimmick & finishing move be?" Jean's question for Brian was: "If you could create a perfect A.I. robot with every single thing you want, what would it include?" Elsewhere in sports, Travis Kelce talked about getting married to Taylor Swift during his media availability at Chiefs' training camp, a Jets player passed out at practice and is now in the concussion protocol, Lionel Messi may be done with soccer after the recent death of his father, and a sex scandal involving the Korean Soccer Association! Office Cora joined us just after 8am to let us know what she's up to in the 715 this weekend. And in today's edition of "Bad News with Happy Music", we had stories about a #FloridaWoman who was having some drinks & celebrating her new Rolls Royce…and then drove drunk in her new Rolls Royce & got popped for DUI, a man on probation decided to drive a stolen car to his probation meeting, another #FloridaWoman who stabbed a horse, a boat filled with cats off the coast of California, the University of Michigan is ditching grades for incoming Freshmen, and a traffic jam in DC is attributed to a sex toy!See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

After nearly ten years of trying to book Jason, Dave finally recorded with him—only for Dave's internet to fail around an hour into the conversation. Six months of attempts to schedule the rest of the interview went nowhere, leaving Dave to confront the blurry line between persistence and becoming unbearably annoying. He decides to stop pursuing Jason, make amends in spirit and release the unfinished conversation exclusively on Patreon. Jesse contributes a classic Xanax blackout story: he drives to a gas station, nods out with his foot on the brake and wakes up safely in bed with no idea where his car went. When he reports it missing, the police remind him that they drove him home, helped him climb through his window and parked the car for him. Abby shares her journey from winning a sixth-grade DARE essay contest to alcoholism, a suicide attempt, an out-of-state DUI and eventually nine years of sobriety. The daughter of two addicts who met at an AA barn dance, Abby describes praying for 90 days until her desire to drink finally lifted. Greg Rauch spent twenty years practicing law in Moscow, Idaho, and nothing in that career resembles what Bryan Kohberger just handed him. Rauch's firm bio covers Chapter 7 and Chapter 13 bankruptcy, landlord-tenant fights, DUI defense, divorce, child custody, wills, probate, and real estate. It credits him with more than twenty trials. It shows no murder case, no capital case, and no petition remotely like the handwritten one Kohberger filed on July 27, 2026 to undo his guilty plea in the Idaho student murders. The state appointed Rauch on August 3 because the public defender's office had a conflict — Kohberger is accusing his own former lawyers of coercing a false confession and burying evidence, claims no judge has ruled on yet. Hours into the job, Rauch admitted to a reporter that he hadn't read the file and had never spoken to the man he represents. The contrast with what came before is the whole story. Anne Taylor's team carried this case for two and a half years, brought in a genetics-trained DNA specialist from San Francisco, and negotiated the deal that kept Kohberger off death row after prosecutors said his DNA was on the knife sheath. The case cost Idaho taxpayers a reported eight million dollars. Kohberger's petition calls that representation a betrayal, and his reward is a solo general practitioner working three hundred miles from the prison where he sits. If the gamble works, the plea dies and the death penalty returns, exactly the outcome the Goncalves family says it wants. This episode lays out the full record on the man now standing between Bryan Kohberger and a capital courtroom, and why the poor guy holding this file may have drawn the worst assignment in American law.END LINKSJoin Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/ Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? How Private Investigators Strengthen Criminal Defense Cases

Think private investigation is all car chases or movie mysteries? Think again.I sit down with private investigator Scott Shepherd of Justified Investigations to pull back the curtain on what really happens behind the scenes in criminal defense cases. Forget the film noir clichés. Scott shares how his work differs from Hollywood's gumshoes and spotlights the vital, often overlooked, partnership between investigators and defense attorneys.Together, we discuss the realities of building a defense case. From sifting through mountains of discovery, to identifying overlooked witnesses, to navigating trial prep and strategy as a team. With stories from the trenches, highlighting both close calls and the methodical process behind major courtroom victories, this episode offers an unfiltered look at the investigative work that can make or break a case.Learn why the best defense is the one that leaves no stone unturned, and how collaboration, humility, and rigorous investigation give clients their best shot at justice.Moments00:00 Starting out in criminal defense06:24 Understanding confirmation bias in law06:51 Reflecting on trial lawyer ego10:45 Discussing Scott's investigative skills14:31 Old-school research paper methods18:27 Working with investigators21:26 Key witness memory issue25:13 Role during trial preparation27:31 Cross-examination with Mark Satawa32:22 Investigating witness statements34:52 Discussing client protection challenges36:23 Collaborating on client interviews41:43 Challenges of Interviewing Witnesses42:35 Approach to building trust5 Frequently Asked Questions About Private InvestigatorsWhat does a criminal defense investigator actually do? A criminal defense investigator reviews discovery, finds and interviews witnesses, analyzes police work, discovers new information, and supports attorneys in building the best defense. How is a private investigator's work different from police investigations? Police investigations aim to support prosecution and often miss alternative perspectives. Private investigators look for overlooked evidence, challenge police assumptions, and seek new witnesses to support the defense. Why is confirmation bias a risk for defense attorneys? Attorneys may assume they know every fact or interpret evidence through their own experiences. Investigators provide fresh, unbiased analysis to spot issues attorneys might miss. How do investigators handle reluctant or hostile witnesses? By approaching witnesses without being confrontational, using empathy, and explaining their neutral role, investigators can often secure valuable interviews—even when initial resistance is high. What makes a successful attorney-investigator partnership? Open collaboration, mutual respect, and a willingness to share information and discuss strategy allow investigators and attorneys to maximize their impact and prepare for every courtroom possibility.Submit your questions to www.lawyertalkpodcast.com.Recorded at Channel 511.Stephen E. Moon tells the story of cleaning out his late father's shed with his son, which quickly turns into a surprisingly emotional conversation about family keepsakes, collecting way too much stuff, and why every dad apparently owns three sledgehammers, twelve mystery tools, and enough spare lumber to rebuild civilization. The gang swaps stories about grandparents, handwritten cards, sentimental treasures, and the impossible task of deciding what deserves to be kept.Of course, it wouldn't be a comedy podcast without the conversation immediately veering into flying lawnmowers, runaway highway cargo, giant pizza ovens crashing into overpasses, protein trends making baby formula more expensive, tanning bed myths making a comeback, and whether today's health advice changes every six months just to keep everyone confused. Then comes the scientific discovery nobody asked for—but everyone will remember: the mysterious phenomenon known as "gym penis." The crew investigates the surprisingly legitimate medical explanation behind workout shrinkage, resulting in one of the most ridiculous conversations you'll hear all week.We also cover changing marijuana habits in America, random facts you can pretend you already knew, Netflix's very first DVD shipment, Red Hot Chili Peppers trivia, China's single time zone, why Nevada still doesn't have a lottery, and yes... exactly how many bags of astronaut waste are still sitting on the moon. While Rizz is living his best Parisian life—posing in photos where you can barely find him, exploring landmarks, and eating his way across France—the crew decides his vacation deserves one thing: relentless psychological warfare. Instead of wishing him a happy birthday, they're fully committed to convincing him that saying "My condolences, Rizz" has always been the correct greeting. It's organized gaslighting... for friendship. From there, the episode refuses to slow down.Lern dives into the latest celebrity news including Slipknot's split with Sid Wilson, Kelly Osbourne's mysterious social media posts, MGK sharing the frightening moment that convinced him to get sober, and the surprisingly real reunion between David Lee Roth and Alex Van Halen... at a TED Talk of all places. The crew also debates Jelly Roll stepping away from touring, Travis Kelce navigating life under the Taylor Swift spotlight, and why celebrity has become its own business long after the music stops paying the biggest bills.Movie fans get plenty to chew on as Spider-Man: Brand New Day smashes box office records while one unfortunate theater audience experiences what may be cinema history after one person's catastrophic flatulence reportedly emptied an entire screening. Yes... that actually becomes a serious discussion.Things somehow become even stranger when the conversation shifts to Lollapalooza, where festival etiquette reaches a brand-new low involving bags of urine being passed through crowds. Today we have Amy. She is 43 years old, lives in Santa Ynez, CA and took her last drink of alcohol on May 25th, 2026.   This episode is brought to you by:   Sign up and get 10% off: Better Help   [01:52] Thoughts from Paul:   Everyone struggles with something and for you that may be alcohol. Paul's message for today isn't how to lessen that struggle. Instead, he wants you to accept it, own it and embrace it.   Unlike many other ailments, where the ideal outcome is to get back where you were, an alcohol addiction allows us to blow past that. We can not only heal from it, but we can be catapulted into a much healthier way of living. This time can be an intense chapter of growth, where you'll emerge with more depth and understanding of yourself and others when you hit the other side.   Be patient, trust the process, own it and befriend it. Turn your struggle into your greatest strength. Not many get to do that with their problems.     [05:30] Paul introduces Amy:   Amy is 43 years old, lives in Santa Ynez, CA, has four children and a variety of pets. She was a nurse for many years, but now just stays home and loves hiking.   Amy grew up in a family with two addicted parents. Her mother went into treatment for a year when Amy was six years old. Amy and her brother spent a lot of time in NA and AA meetings as kids and said it was traumatizing to hear all the stories about people's addictions but was grateful for her mother's sobriety.   Amy was 14 years old when she started drinking. Her mother was sober for about 10 years and then began drinking again. There were a lot of toxic family things happening and Amy ended up getting kicked out of her home at 16.   After getting pregnant at 17, Amy decided she was going to be a parent, put herself through nursing school and prove to everyone that she was not going to turn out like her parents. Around this time, she became friends with a woman who drank wine and made it look sophisticated and cool. They would have play dates for their kids and drink wine together.   In spite of getting a DUI when she was 20, Amy did not think her drinking was a problem. She didn't believe she needed to quit drinking, she just needed to quit drinking and driving. Amy met her husband and soon they moved to California and got married. Amy had two more kids back-to-back and this is when she realized that she looked forward to 5pm so that she could drink due to the stress of parenting.   After the birth of her fourth child, Amy and her husband hired an au pair to have some assistance with the kids while they both worked. Amy was friends with a group of people at work that she would go out with on Friday nights. Since she had an au pair, she was able to go out without accountability. At the same time, she had a friend with access to cocaine so Amy would use it in addition to drinking.   A close friend of Amy's was visiting and saw firsthand what she was doing. She offered to take Amy with her to Peru to participate in plant medicine. After coming home from this experience, Amy decided to put together some tools and chose to quit drinking for a year. When she started back and attempted moderation, it didn't go well and she realized it was easier to not have any drinks than to try and only have one.   Before quitting drinking again, Amy started doing meditation and practicing yoga. Eventually she started recognizing the incongruency of drinking heavily and doing healthy activities. Amy started playing the tape forward before social events and realized that she needed to quit for good.   Since quitting drinking this time, Amy has started listening to podcasts, has joined Reframe, meditates regularly, enjoys journalling and recently started The Artist's Way.   Amy's parting piece of guidance: stop drinking to make everyone else comfortable.   Recovery Elevator You took the elevator down.
