My next guests are Dana Downs and Michelle Roche. Yep, we get 2 mints in one on this next episode. Dana hails from Louisiana but was pretty much an Army Brat and came to Athens from Columbus, GA .Michelle is from the Atlanta Area. They both have been here in Athens since the “Big Bang!” Dana as a musician and beautiful singer, while Michelle was always taking care of business. Some of the bands Michelle worked with were, Five-Eight, Of Montreal, Vigilantes of Love, Pylon Reenactment, The Glands, Randall Bramblett, and Widespread Panic. She has also been part of AthFest for about 6 years now. You can still see Dana playing around town with anyone who asks her! As two major entities of the Athens music scene, they both showed how well they fit into the Music of Athens GA then and now! It made me so happy to talk with them both. I think you'll concur.

My guests on AthCastMusic this week are four members of the band Bichos Vivos. With me today are Robert Moser, Philip Kohnen. Todd Mueller and Tony Oscar. Bichos Vivos play Forró, a lively music style from northeastern Brazil, featuring accordion, triangle, zabumba, guitar, bass, percussion, flute, violin, and vocals. Similar to Louisiana Zydeco music, here in the United States, it inspires energetic dancing with its vibrant rhythms. The band has just returned from their very first visit to Brazil, just in time for AthFest! Our conversation was so much fun and there was a LOT of laughter. We talked about how each member got to Athens, how they met and how much their camaraderie makes it a very special band. You will get to hear a live song here at Tweed Recording and wait until you hear what all of their day jobs are!Show AthCastMusic (©): The Music of Athens Georgia, Now and Then.SEASON: 2 Episode 23Length : 40:00PUBLISHED: June 20, 2024Updated Weekly on ThursdayEngineer: Kayla DoverRecorded at Tweed Recording Audio Production Schoolhttps://tweedrecording.comCONTACT FOR ATHCASTMUSIC:marlene@athcastmusic.cominstagram: AthCastMusicFaceBook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61550294283019INSTAGRAM: bichosvivosmusicFACEBOOK: https://www.facebook.com/BichosVivos

AthFest Music & Arts festival took over downtown Athens every June for 23 years. For the first time in AthFest history, AthFest weekend — what was supposed to be the weekend of June 25-28 — was void of the music, food and fundraising that had become an annual tradition in Athens due to COVID-19. On today's episode, culture editor Anna Thomas speaks with four people involved with the annual AthFest festival.

When Bryan Rucker and Ryan Bars became step-brothers, they also became a band. Based in Atlanta, The Norm fuses hip-hop, rock and pop, creating a sound far from normal. Just in time for the summer solstice, The Norm's new single, "Summer Days," is out today. The band is set to perform at AthFest on Saturday, but first, Rucker and Bars stopped by GPB to add two songs to our Georgia Playlist of songs written or performed by a Georgian. Rucker chose OutKast's "Ms. Jackson" and Bars picked "Rubber Band Man" by T.I.
The 50th Running of the AJC Peachtree Road Race takes over Atlanta on July 4. In this episode, longtime sportswriter Ken Sugiura shares some of the most interesting stories surrounding the event, including the runner who hasn't missed a race since its founding. Plus, host Shane Harrison shares things to do in and around Atlanta, including the AthFest music and arts festival and Rickie Lee Jones at City Winery.
Chase Brantley (of Athens, GA’s Moonlight Theater) joins the fellas this week to discuss the music festival compilation album AthFest 10, a treasure trove of deliciously mumbled vocals and fun lyrics about vices. Other topics of discussion include half-comedy, the “Nightswimming” vibe, and the artistic beauty of owning what’s wrong with you. Throw on a black turtleneck and grab your favorite cowbell, baby—we’re living it! Follow Moonlight on insta: @moonlight_theater_company
Extremely Special Guest Uncle Chris joins the fellas this week to discuss a real fun grab-bag of a compilation album, AthFest 2007. AthFest is an annual music and arts festival in Athens, GA (where Chris lives!), and its 2007 iteration was AWASH with dreamy synths, wacky instrumentations, and rap music about being moderately successful. But honestly there’s not too much AthFest talk, because we’ve gotta get to the big questions, like: what was dad’s haircare secret as a twentysomething? The answer will amaze you!
On this episode, Tony and Scott sit down to discuss a myriad of things related to Georgia football and non-college football things of interest like, the Director’s Cup, the recent Braves sweep of the St Louis Cardinals (it’s a Will Leitch thing), college bands at AthFest, Tony and Jake Fromm injuries, Espy nominations, bad losses by other teams to help Georgia fans cope, and way too early bowl projections among other things. It's the best weekend of the year here in Athens and who better to celebrate the occasion than a big time, main stage star like Austin Parker from Universal Sigh?
