What if one person noticing something in you changed the entire trajectory of your life? In this episode, Samyr Laine, Haitian-American Olympian, attorney, and managing partner of Freedom Trail Capital, shares how a high school track coach who noticed a kid with leaping ability in gym class set off a chain of events that led to the Olympic Games, a call from the president of Haiti, boardrooms with Jay-Z and the NFL, and a venture fund investing at the intersection of culture, lifestyle, and influence. Samyr was user number 14 on Facebook, roommates with Mark Zuckerberg at Harvard, and has built one of the most unusual and compelling careers in venture capital. But none of it traces back to a famous name or a prestigious institution. It traces back to Coach Burks, who saw something and said something. [00:06:00] What He Does and Who He Serves Managing partner of Freedom Trail Capital, a consumer-focused venture fund Invests at the intersection of culture, lifestyle, and influence Raising a $50 million first fund with investments across baby care, hair care, pet care, and beverages [00:07:40] What Inspires Him Driven by the pursuit of excellence in whatever role he is in Meets with founders even when he can't invest; every conversation teaches him something Reads nonfiction constantly to learn how others persevere Measures progress in bite-sized steps just like he did as an Olympic athlete [00:13:00] How He Got Here After Harvard, got a master's at UT Austin then attended Georgetown Law Competed professionally in track and field for 10 years including the 2012 London Olympics Represented Haiti at seven world championships and three Pan American Games Started his real career as legal counsel in DC before moving into sports business [00:14:00] From Sports Law to Roc Nation Started his real career as legal counsel for the Washington Wizards, Capitals, and Mystics Was happy in sports law when a recruiter called with an offer he couldn't refuse Jay-Z was looking for someone to handle operations at Roc Nation Left the sports world for a completely new chapter as an operator [00:15:40] From Roc Nation to Westbrook Left Roc Nation after a couple of years and joined Westbrook Inc as SVP of Operations Helped oversee Will and Jada Pinkett Smith's entire media and production enterprise Moved to lead their consumer product division covering brands, licensing, and IP monetization Worked with talent ranging from Pelé and Patrick Mahomes to DJ Jazzy Jeff [00:19:40] The Vision for Freedom Trail Capital Goal is to move from fund one to fund two to fund three Wants to be the tip of the spear for culturally relevant consumer brands Mission is to prove talent-backed businesses work when paired with discipline and rigor Model: find scalable, defensible businesses then add the right person of influence [00:23:40] The First Relationship That Changed Everything: Coach Burks Got cut from his track team in eighth grade; came back junior year to find a new coach Coach Burks noticed his leaping ability in gym class and introduced him to the triple jump Had no idea what the triple jump was; just wanted to be a sprinter That one introduction led him to the 2012 London Olympics and seven world championships [00:25:40] The Second Relationship: Desiree Perez of Roc Nation Working under Desiree shaped the pace, discipline, and operating style he carries today She put him in boardrooms with Facundo Bacardi and Roger Goodell of the NFL Was in the early rooms when Roc Nation partnered with the NFL on Super Bowl halftime entertainment The people he met in her orbit opened doors he could never have reached on his own [00:27:40] What Coach Burks's Introduction Made Possible Chose to represent Haiti at the Olympics; the Haitian team had six athletes, the US had nearly 600 After qualifying for the finals, received a personal call from the president of Haiti Town squares across Haiti filled with thousands watching the Olympic triple jump final He now sits on the board of a school and orphanage in Haiti; it all started with one introduction [00:33:00] The Value of One Right Relationship One right relationship can pay dividends for decades in ways you never expected His introduction to the triple jump led to the Olympics, which still opens doors today Every stop was about gaining skills and being more useful at the next one One introduction can be worth as much as a check KEY QUOTES "Your network and your relationships, man, it cannot be overstated how valuable it is." - Samyr Laine "The value of one right relationship. Barry, Abigail, and special guest Nick Martino discuss Ozomatli by Ozomatli and sample Sole of the Sea (collaboration with Rockport Brewing Company in Rockport, Massachusetts), Drip, and girl, so confusing from Lost Shoe Brewing and Roasting Company in Marlborough, Massachusetts.Nick is now a four-timer, having previously appeared on our second Christmas bonus episode, Bonus: A Christmas Day's Eve! Original Songs by Our Friends, and both of our live episodes: Bonus: LIVE from Stand Up! Pod Jam 2024: Pops on Hops Friend Exchange (New York Funk Exchange and Able Baker Brewing) and Bonus: LIVE from Stand Up! Pod Jam 2025: Neon Desert Challenge (the latter of which he also produced for us!). Give his previous appearances some love; they are a lot of fun!Nick, in part, chose to assign us this album because of Abigail's beef with He's the DJ, I'm the Rapper by DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince as displayed in Jukebox: He's the Drinker, We're the Talkers (DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince and Evil Genius Beer Company). Coincidentally, this album reminded Abigail of a different Derek Hummel, Sr., Jukebox selection, Make Yourself by Incubus, as discussed in Jukebox: Make Your Flight (Incubus and Hell 'n Blazes Brewing Co.).Both DJ Cut Chemist and MC Chali 2na left Ozomatli after this album because their other group, Jurassic 5, was blowing up.We found a great blog with additional information about and clips of Nick's favorite “trumpet battle” between Wynton Marsalis and Trombone Shorty at the House of Blues in New Orleans, Louisiana, in 2009. Evidently, trumpet battles have been going on for over 100 years!Watch Chali 2na and New Orleans-based jazz band Naughty Professor perform Cut Chemist Suite live at the Culture Room in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, in 2018!Oh look, more self-promotion! O Le Le names Edie Brickell, whom we have previously reviewed (see Using Honeybees for the Meads [Edie Brickell & New Bohemians and B. Nektar]). We could think of at least one other time an artist we reviewed explicitly names an artist we'd previously reviewed: Crash Test Dummies (see Pops Shuffled His Flight [Crash Test Dummies and Toll Road Brewing Company]) names David Bryne (see Byrned-Again [David Byrne and Lincoln & South Brewing Company]) in When I Go Out with Artists. These two latter albums are both among Abigail's top five favorite albums we've ever reviewed, as revealed in our Pops on Hops Hot 100 Special!Super Bowl Sundae contains a sample that sounds very similar to a sample previously discussed on the podcast: Hip Hop Dancer's Theme by DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince samples Peter Piper by Run-D.M.C., which sampled Take Me to the Mardi Gras by Bob James.Abigail plugged The Manifesto (feat. Trueno and Proof) off of Gorillaz' recently released The Mountain, a song featuring both Indian influence and a Spanish-language rapper!girl, so confusing was brewed with the 2026 Pink Boots hop blend from Yakima Chief Hops. Sales of this hop blend benefit the Pink Boots Society, which supports women and non-binary individuals in the fermented and alcoholic beverage industry!Up next… I've Got My Own Album to Do by Ronnie WoodJingles are by our friend Pete Coe.Visit Anosmia Awareness for more information on Barry's condition.Follow Barry or Abigail on Untappd to see what we're drinking when we're not on mic!Leave us a rating or a review on Apple Podcasts or Spotify!Facebook | Instagram | Bluesky | YouTube | Substack | Website | Email us | Virtual Jukebox | Beer Media Group

Send us Fan MailLosing someone you love can reorder your whole day, and sometimes the only way through is to build a routine that holds you up. We sit with Chicago's own Teefa for a conversation that starts with grief and self-care and quickly opens into something bigger: what it means to be a real artist, a real person, and a real voice in Chicago hip hop. From sauna time and meditation to building a home that feels like a retreat, Teefa breaks down how healing becomes a practice, not a slogan. We also dig into her journey through the Chicago music scene, from early access to DJ gear and recording, to barbershop freestyles, ciphers, and first shows that made the dream feel reachable. The talk turns to how the city's hip hop spaces have changed, how drill music reshaped attention, and why “balance” in music matters for youth, culture, and mental health. If you care about lyricism, vulnerability, and storytelling that reflects real life, you'll hear why Teefa believes words carry weight and why growth should never have an age limit. Then we get practical about the music business: Chicago radio support, local artist ecosystems, fair opportunities, and why every step toward success can't come with a price tag. We close on the joy of sound with “International” and Teefa's house music and hip hop blend that's built to move a room without losing bars. Subscribe for more real conversations, share this with a Chicago music fan, and leave a review so more listeners can find the show.Subscribe to our YouTube Channel: The SHITTS Podcast. Welcome to Episode #28 of the 90s State of Mind podcast - a collaborative project between 4ever in Electric Dreams and Blue-in-Green:RADIO. This podcast series sees Imran (London, UK) and Rhonda (California, USA) delve into some of their favourite releases from the 90s and for this episode, the pair celebrate the fifth and final album by DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince, 'Code Red'. Released on October 12, 1993, on Jive Records, the album peaked at number sixty-four on the Billboard 200 and number thirty-nine on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. On January 14, 1994, the Recording Industry Association of America certified the album gold. Four singles reached the Billboard charts; "Boom! Shake the Room", "I'm Looking for the One (To Be with Me)", "I Wanna Rock", and "Can't Wait to Be with You". Imran & Rhonda delve deep into the album's make-up exploring the singles, collaborators, and discuss the notion of positive feel-good hip-hop versus the burgeoning edgier sounds that would ultimately captivate audiences and dominate chart success in the 90s. www.4everinelectricdreams.com/ Blue-in-Green:RADIO is a London-based online internet radio station which celebrates 21st century soul, jazz, funk, Latin & hip-hop music. www.blueingreenradio.com TuneIn: bit.ly/2LBK0BD

This week's Mixtape Rewind takes us back to Season 1 when Instagram picked our summer soundtrack, and we just tried to keep up. We asked listeners to send their best summer songs, then built a real mixtape out of the chaos: 12 tracks that feel like heat haze, long evenings, and that first day when summer finally clicks into place. Along the way, we shout out the people who submitted picks and admit where we couldn't resist sneaking in a few of our own.The fun part is how quickly “summer music” stops being simple. We get nostalgic with LFO's “Summer Girls” and the oddly unforgettable lyrics that still scream 1999, then jump to Sylvan Esso's “Rooftop Dancing” and talk about why rooftops are basically the city version of a pool. Weezer's “Feels Like Summer” brings that bittersweet edge, and from there we keep pulling on the thread of sunny songs that hide something darker underneath.Lorde's “Solar Power” nails the new-release summer vibe, The Kinks' “Sunny Afternoon” turns out to be way more cynical than it sounds, and Childish Gambino's “Feels Like Summer” smuggles climate change anxiety into a laid-back groove. We round it out with true summer essentials like DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince's “Summertime,” a pure-pop hit from Owl City and Carly Rae Jepsen, a “Constructive Summer” pep talk from The Hold Steady, and a cover-song detour with The Ataris and “Kokomo” before Poison closes the night with “Nothing But A Good Time.”One more tease: there's no Bruce Springsteen on the main mix, and yes, we noticed. Hit play, share this with a friend who hoards playlists, and leave a review if you want more listener-built mixes. What's the one song you swear belongs on every summer playlist? You can find the mix here on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2xecia1iK9SH9fpDGGyElY?si=60cde1613e264ad01. Shottie on Miami Hip-Hop and His JourneyIn this episode of Florida Sound Archive, we're joined by Miami rapper Shottie for a deep dive into his journey through hip-hop, from his earliest beginnings to what's next.Born in the Dominican Republic and later moving to New York City, Shottie shares how the passing of his father ultimately brought him to Miami, where he grew up in the Kendall area. He reflects on first discovering hip-hop through DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince and the classic track Parents Just Don't Understand, before diving deeper into the culture with artists like Redman, Wu-Tang Clan, and Naughty by Nature. We also explore his discovery of Miami hip-hop pioneers including Trick Daddy, JT Money, 2 Live Crew, Mother Superior, Mr. Mic Rippa, and DJ Craze, and how learning about their work gave him a broader perspective on Miami hip-hop and its place within the larger culture.Shottie walks us through starting to rap in high school under his original stage name Deadshot, performing early shows at the Cameo Theater (Miami Beach) and the Chili Pepper (Coconut Grove), and forming the group IDEE4, which made the leap to Los Angeles before ultimately returning to South Florida six months later. We get into his creative process, including his approach to recording, collaborating with producers and rappers locally and internationally, developing album artwork, and the sonic and cinematic influences that shape his projects. Shottie also reflects on performances in Orlando, New York City, Fort Wayne, and Toronto, and what lies ahead in terms of touring and new music.
Hip-hop reached a major milestone when DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince won the first Grammy Award for Best Rap Performance. The victory signaled a turning point for a genre born in the Bronx and reshaped the music industry's recognition of rap. This week's Mixtape Rewind takes us back to Season 3 when we first thought of the idea that would become our podcast, The Battle. What happens when two totally different songs share the exact same title? We built a “battle mix” to find out—pairing heavyweights and outliers across genres and decades—then we argue, analyze, and crown winners. From Go to Get Back, each round reveals how a single word can split into protest anthems, breakup arias, dance‑floor bliss, or guitar‑driven chaos. We kick off with Blink‑182 and The Black Keys on Go, weighing a bold tonal shift against a signature groove. Eurythmics steamroll Charles & Eddie on Would I Lie To You with brass, bite, and Annie Lennox's powerhouse vocal. True Love sparks a values debate: Angels & Airwaves deliver a soaring, cinematic build while Coldplay's “lie if you must” line clashes with the title. Roy Orbison's You Got It proves timeless compared to a New Kids on the Block time capsule. Then it's Growing Pains, as Alessia Cara's present‑tense anxiety meets Ludacris's reflective narrative—two coming‑of‑age angles, one title. The center of the card gets fiery. Green Day's Holiday channels mid‑2000s protest energy against Madonna's disco‑pop celebration. Rihanna's Take A Bow serves velvet‑gloved dismissal, while Muse opens an album with a synth‑rock chill that lingers. Tupac and The Beach Boys both claim I Get Around, one with effortless charisma and the other with historic chart significance. Foo Fighters' Run slams with near‑metal intensity, outpacing Snow Patrol's slow‑burn. Happy pits NF's candid mental‑health lens against Pharrell's pure joy machine—two roads to one feeling. And our main event, Get Back, throws Ludacris's peak hit‑maker energy against The Beatles' cultural gravity and complicated context. https://music.apple.com/us/playlist/same-name-different-songs-mix/pl.u-JPAZEoJTLd7Y15jhttps://open.spotify.com/playlist/1sCtai2Hujfbv9kZD0qnU9?si=779125752f4c4f3f Go by The Black KeysGo by blink-182Would I Lie To You? In this episode of Hip Hop What Ifs, we explore one of the most intriguing "almost" moments in cinematic history: the possibility of DJ Jazzy Jeff and The Fresh Prince (Will Smith) taking the lead roles in the 1990 classic House Party. We pull back the curtain on the unexpected legal battle that started it all, involving a copyright infringement lawsuit filed by New Line Cinema over the duo's hit song "A Nightmare on My Street". As part of a potential settlement to offset the lawsuit, the studio offered the pair several film scripts, with House Party being one of the primary options on the table. The discussion dives deep into why the duo ultimately passed on the project, including DJ Jazzy Jeff's hesitation regarding the film's heavy focus on dancing. We also examine the creative vision of director Reginald Hudlin, who originally developed the story as his college thesis at Harvard, inspired by the vibe of Luther Vandross's "Bad Boy Tonight". You will learn how the search for a "black hip hop group" led Hudlin to Kid 'n Play after witnessing their massive fan reception in New York, a move that would define the culture of the early 90s. Finally, we analyze the "Butterfly Effect" of this casting choice. We compare the popularity of Jazzy Jeff and The Fresh Prince against Kid 'n Play in the late 80s, debating whether the film would have reached the same heights without the specific chemistry and iconic dance moves of the legendary duo. We also touch on the supporting cast that rounded out the masterpiece, including the introduction of a young Martin Lawrence, the bullying presence of Full Force, and the comedic brilliance of Robin Harris and John Witherspoon. Hip-hop culture was a dominant force during the '80s and '90s, and inspired language, fashion, film, and music. Yes, that includes plenty of alternative music. But that's not what we're talking about today. Instead, we explore the inverse - how influential was alternative music in the world of hip hop? While perhaps not quite as pervasive, it did exist - whether it be through the use of sampling recognizable songs, a cross-pollination of styles and artists coming together, or perhaps just an overall attitude or spirit. Our Third Lad this week, Lemoyne Alexander, is a man who has bridged both the hip-hop and alternative worlds and then some. He played in family bands throughout the ‘70s & ‘80s including the Fascination, who had some dance club hits like 1986's “Why Are You Always Complaining?” before settling in as a hip hop producer both solo and with the production team 3 Da Hard Way, working on records by the likes of Aalyiah, DMX, DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince, and for labels like Jive and Motown. Lemoyne left the rap game to return to his earliest passions - the guitar and rock n' roll, releasing Solitude in 2019 and Perfect World in 2023. 2024's indie rock single “Insecurity” is an earworm that once you hear that infectious chorus, it's going to take up residence in your head for all your days. With a new single "Claustrophobia" (which you will hear during this episode!) and LP Alone on the horizon, Lemoyne is poised to continue making his mark on alt rock. Oh, and on top of that, we've got a brand new O3L game for y'all: Off Da Chartz (aka Rap Draft), in which our contestants draft five albums that they believe will appear on Boombox's list of the Top 50 Alternative Rap Albums of all time. Plus, Uncle Gregg rants aplenty. Oh, the rants. Yo! Thanks to Laura Bissett from the MyWhy Agency for the introduction and coordination. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

This is a test run for a requested mix from my mate Martin Evans in the UK. He's a MASSIVE soulful vocal nut. He's always telling me I need more vocals in my set, especially female. One day last August while chatting he started sending you-tube links to his favourite tunes and challenged me to make a mix with them. I agreed and then kept forgetting. A year later I finally bought the tracks, I only had a few of them. For last night's show I thought I'd give them a test run. I hadn't listened to them so didn't know how much energy they had to know where they would sound best in the mix. I nearly always have a rough idea even if I've only just bought something, but with these ones I was going in totally blind with the mindset that this would never see the light of day!During the show the chatroom was loving the tunes, they are classics in the soulful vocal scene. Martin was in the chatroom making full use of all the positive emojis.I recorded the show so I could listen and get a better feel for the flow, which I still intend to do one day. In the meantime I'm sharing this version for all you soulful vocal boys & girls to enjoy, despite it being a demo. I couldn't find the tracks he asked for that I already had, with a couple of exceptions so I had to improvise the last 20 minutes, but tried to chose quality product. What are your thoughts? Does Martin know his stuff? Was it worth the pestering? Does it need an updated version with better flow and programming?Tracklisting:1: Cunnie Williams - Spirit (MAW Mix)2: Perempay N- Dee, Cleo Soul - Time To Let Go (Louis Benedetti Vocal Mix)3: Lisa Shaw - Always (Lovetronic Vocal)4: Andy Caldwell - All I Need (CJ One Mix)5: Alex Finkin, Rocco Rodamaal - In Da Hood6: Kimara Lovelace - I Love You More (Sean McCabe Main Vocal Mix)7: Kings Of Tomorrow, April Morgan - I Need To Love Me (Sandy Rivera's Club Mix)8: Waajeed - Let Your Love ft Ideeya, DeSean Jones, Khristian Foreman9: Simbad, Brian Temba, QB Smith, Toni Ecomedes - Come Join In (QBs Starry Nights In Sunnyside Remix)10: Kathy Brown - Never Again (Copyright Classic Mix)11: Fanatix, Alex Mills - Love Connection12: Marty Thomas - Resurrect Me (Lift Me Up) (Shelter Mix)13: Blaze - Found Love (Fanatix Vocal Mix)14: DJ Jazzy Jeff, V - In Time (MAW Mix Album Edit)15: Mustafa - I Submit 2 U (2000 Mix)16: Indigo - Save Your Life (Grant Nelson Remix)17: Rachel Claudio - Freedom (Raw Artistic Soul Remix)18: The Brand New Heavies - ft N'Dea Davenport - I Don't Know Why (I Love You)(Kenny Dope Mix)19: Jazzloungerz, Rainy Payne - ObsessionEnjoy!

In this episode of "Normal World," Dave Landau, 1/4 Black Garrett, and Angela open with headlines out of Las Vegas, where an Israeli official was arrested for soliciting a minor, alongside lighter coverage of Snoop Dogg making the news for smoking marijuana. The tone pivots quickly to comedy as Dave recounts performing for 17,000 fans in Detroit alongside Shane Gillis, reflecting on the differences between intimate clubs, theaters, and massive arenas. From there, the conversation moves into sports and spectacle, revisiting the infamous Malice at the Palace with Ron Artest, debates over male cheerleaders in the NFL, and UFC champion Dricus Du Plessis. Wrestling legends including Diamond Dallas Page, Jake “The Snake” Roberts, Hulk Hogan, Ric Flair, Randy Savage, The Undertaker, Roddy Piper, and Dave Bautista all come up. The crew then explores music and pop culture, from DJ Jazzy Jeff and New Kids on the Block to Will Smith's troubled freestyle, Shia LaBeouf's eclectic performances, and the value of great movie soundtracks. They also riff on NFL end zone slogans like “End Racism,” revisit 1990s fashion trends such as frosted tips and puka shells, and discuss scandals involving Bob Crane, Patrice O'Neal's comedy legacy, and the Natalie Holloway case.Today's guest on "Normal World" is Gerard Michaels.
