This week I went to see Rickie Lee Jones at the Barbican in London. It wasn't a concert in the usual sense. It felt more like being invited into somebody's world for a couple of hours, a world built from jazz clubs, late-night conversations, drifting highways, poetry, memory and beautifully fractured songs.Jones has always occupied her own corner of American music. Too jazzy for straightforward rock, too literary for pop, too restless to stay in one place stylistically. From the extraordinary run of albums that began with Rickie Lee Jones and Pirates, through to the experimental material later in her career, she's remained an artist who follows instinct rather than expectation. In this episode we're discussing the Barbican performance and why Jones still feels like such a singular presence decades into her career. In this episode I am in discussion with Dr. Andrew Webber.https://www.facebook.com/share/1F15mx4ea3/https://buymeacoffee.com/lownoiseWhy buy me a coffee?Low Noise is proudly ad-free. Grammy-winning musician Rickie Lee Jones says her earliest memories are of sounds: running water, a bouncing ball, and the soft coos of Mourning Doves. In this episode, Rickie reminisces on her experiences hearing doves throughout her life and how she learned to call back to them in kind. More info and transcript at BirdNote.org. Want more BirdNote? My guest for this episode is pianist, accordionist and composer Ben Rosenblum whose latest project is a musical kaleidoscopic blend of Dominican merengue, West African and Caribbean rhythms, Irish folk music, neo-soul, J-pop and hard bop and other traditions. The beautiful musical form Ben and his group of top rate, globally influenced ensemble of musicians called the Nebula Project, has created is called “The Longest Way Round”, out now on One Trick Dog Records. Another significant influence of note for this album is the extensive globetrotting for Rosenblum, who spends about half of his time on the road touring both with his own ensembles, and with Rickie Lee Jones, Catherine Russell and Indian singer Kiran Ahluwalia. Here is my conversation with Ben Rosenblum about his wild and exhilarating ride across musical boundaries to create “The Longest Way Round.”

"Obviously Five Believers" Formed in 1980 by the Kentucky-born former roadie for X, Top Jimmy, his band Top Jimmy and the Rhythm Pigs were local L.A. heroes. Playing a wicked blend of American roots music and scrappy R&B, Top Jimmy and the Rhythm Pigs were a band that sizzled with equal parts howl and groove. Top Jimmy was a wildly charismatic frontman once described as an unholy combination of Howlin' Wolf and Shakespeare's Falstaff and he was such a ubiquitous presence in L.A. his outfit was once dubbed the scene's punk house band. The live show, which was a sweaty, frenetic blast of sweaty, rootsy bliss, found everyone from Tom Waits to Stevie Ray Vaughn joining them onstage. By the way, if you're wondering if the Van Halen track "Top Jimmy" is about the Top Jimmy I'm speaking of, let me just say this: there could only be one Top Jimmy. So: yes. The band's only album Pigus Drunkus Maximus which came out in 1987 on Steve Wynn of the Dream Syndicate's Down There label, was just reissued for the first time ever on CD and on pig pink colored vinyl and it's an essential addition to your record collection. Top Jimmy sang with Maria McKee and Phil Alvin, was seen getting a tattoo from John Doe in the Decline of Western Civilization and hung out with David Lee Roth. The guy was everywhere and remains, to this day, one of the most charismatic characters in rock and roll history. As for his sax player Steve Berlin, well, Mr. Berlin after leaving the band, went on to become one of the greatest rock and roll sax players ever. The Philadelphia born Berlin is a full time member of Los Lobos, and the list of people he's played with and produced is just ridiculous. Let me give you a partial list: The Tragically Hip, R.E.M., Faith No More, the Go-Go's, Great Big Sea, The Replacements, Rickie Lee Jones and the Beat Farmers. And believe me, I could go on. An unbelievable player of steady finesse and power, Steve Berlin is an absolute legend and I wish this conversation could have gone on for hours. www.topjimmyandtherhythmpigs.bandcamp.com (http://www.topjimmyandtherhythmpigs.bandcamp.com) www.bombshellradio.com (http://www.bombshellradio.com) www.stereoembersmagazine.com (http://www.stereoembersmagazine.com) www.alexgreenbooks.com (http://www.alexgreenbooks.com) Threads + Bluesky + Instagram: @emberspodcast Email: editor@stereoembersmagazine.com

I sat down with Janie Barnett, a singer, songwriter, arranger, and educator whose career reflects a steady commitment to saying yes to what fits and no to what does not.We begin with her roots in the Greater Washington area, where summers at the Smithsonian Folklife Festival and early exposure to roots music shaped her ear. Moving to New York was a shock. The city carried a gritty, post-Patti Smith energy and felt like a long search for a new urban Americana sound. Janie found her footing through community, especially friendships with Robin Batteau and Kenny White. Session work, including jingles, gave her financial stability and the freedom to keep her songwriting honest rather than chasing a paycheck through her own music. We talk about life behind the scenes and what it taught her about leadership. Janie shares stories from sessions with Linda Ronstadt and a career highlight singing background vocals on Saturday Night Live with Rickie Lee Jones, one of her musical heroes. Being on the team shaped how she leads her own bands, creating rooms where musicians feel respected and invited to contribute. She also reflects on how becoming a parent changed her artistry. Her songs deepened, her priorities clarified, and the work stopped feeling precious in the face of real life.We spend time on her project Under My Skin, a reimagining of Cole Porter through an acoustic Americana lens. What began as a guitar idea for I've Got You Under My Skin grew into a pandemic-era collaboration with an extraordinary group of musicians, including Carmela Ramsey and Jerry Douglas, many of whom recorded from home studios. The album proves Porter's writing is timeless, and Janie's voice brings it all together. We close with her work at Berklee, where she mentors singer-songwriters and leads ensembles. She speaks candidly about the pressures of constant content and social media, and the importance of building real community and a live musical life. Looking ahead, she is planning a vinyl release of the Cole Porter project, aiming for a show around Porter's birthday in June, and working toward a new record of original songs with a clearer strategy for getting it into the world.Music from the Episode:LIfe Is Long and Then It's Not (Janie Barnett)Delaware Bridge (Janie Barnett)If You Were Here (Janie Barnett)I've Got You Under My Skin (Janie Barnett)Night and Day (Janie Barnett with Keith Sewell)You're the Top (Janie Barnett with Catherine Russell)Thank you for listening. Discograffiti is the deep-dive podcast for music obsessives. In this episode (Part 4 of a 4-part series edited down from a 5 1/2 hour interview), Lenny Waronker takes a deep-dive stroll along with host Dave Gebroe through his entire career, with priceless commentary and stories peeled off along the way. Legendary producer and Warner Brothers studio head Lenny Waronker is a record producer and music industry executive. As the president of Warner Brothers Records, and later, as the co-founder and co-chair of DreamWorks Records, Waronker was noted for his commitment to artists and his belief that "music, not money, was still number one." In 2025, Waronker was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in the Ahmet Ertegun Award category for non-performing industry professionals. Part 4 focuses on the first album Lenny ever produced, Side 2 of Van Dyke Parks' legendary debut LP Song Cycle. Lenny once said: “To be associated with Song Cycle, even now, is more important to me than 99% of the hit records I've been involved with.” Parts 2 & 4 are an absolute dream come true for fans of this record. Here are just a few of the many things that Lenny discusses with Discograffiti in this podcast: The track on the LP that Van Dyke referred to as “like stepping from one kind of music into something else”; How Randy Newman feels about Nilsson Sings Newman, according to Lenny; A wildly divergent digression during which I discover the very direct link between The Beau Brummels and Rickie Lee Jones; An overview of Song Cycle's ad campaign, one of the most memorable and least conventional music industry experiments of all time; An in-depth deep dive on every song off Side Two of Song Cycle; The early days of getting Ry Cooder & Randy Newman's careers off the ground at Warner Brothers; Whether or not Van Dyke invented MTV a decade before its time; And an in-the-moment eulogy for Brian Wilson, who had died only days before the taping of this episode. Since 1988, he's been the engineer of choice for Brian Wilson's recordings. In 1996, Linett created the first true stereo mix of Pet Sounds. He's also co-produced nearly all of the band's archival releases, including 1997's The Pet Sounds Sessions, 1998's Endless Harmony Soundtrack, 2003's Hawthorne, CA, and 2011's The Smile Sessions, as well as the Feel Flows (2021) and Sail On Sailor (2022) box sets. He's also worked with Red Hot Chili Peppers, Jane's Addiction, Los Lobos, Rickie Lee Jones, and Randy Newman. Here are just a few of the many things that Mark discusses with Discograffiti in this podcast: Mark's first few unillustrious gigs on his path to break into the music industry; His early work milking the Jimi Hendrix catalog; Mark's love of The Beach Boys leading up to his work on Brian's debut 1988 solo album; Mark's genius brainstorm of releasing The Beach Boys catalog as those genius celebrate “two-fer” releases; Assembling The Pet Sounds Sessions and The Smile Sessions; And the serendipitous story of how he wound up in this industry in the first place. MUSICRoger Daltrey of The Who is now SIR Roger Daltrey. He was knighted by Prince William at Windsor Castle on Wednesday. It's in recognition of not only his musical achievements, but also his charity work. Here he is on the award, and what his younger self and band would've thought back in the day. https://consequence.net/2025/12/sir-roger-daltrey-knighted/ Sharon Osbourne has given her first interview since the death of her husband Ozzy this past July.Appearing Wednesday on the British TV show Piers Morgan Uncensored, hosted by her longtime friend, she opened up about his health struggles, doing his final show this past July 5th in Birmingham, England, their last conversations and much more. You can watch the show on YouTube, and here are a few excerpts:Sharon Osbourne on the last two weeks of Ozzy's life. OC:...in seven years. :27 [Courtesy of Piers Morgan Uncensored]"He was so happy Piers afterwards. And he kept looking at the papers and he goes to me, 'I never knew so many people like me.' But that was the way he was. I mean, he knew he was famous, but not to the amount that people loved him. It's a whole different thing. And he was just so happy. Happier than we'd seen him in seven years."Sharon Osbourne on dreams Ozzy was having the last week of his life. OC:...he was ready. :26 [Courtesy of Piers Morgan Uncensored]"He was having dreams the last week of his life. He was seeing people that he never knew. I said, 'Well, what kind of people?' He goes, 'All different people. And I just keep walking and walking and I'm seeing all these different people every night. And I go back there and I'm looking at these people and they're looking at me and nobody's talking.' And he he knew. He was ready." Sharon also talked about the first time she and Ozzy met, when they fell in love, how she will never want to get married again, how if she didn't have kids she would have killed herself when he died, and the thing she misses most is holding his hand.On a lighter note, she also talked about how she wanted to get back at Roger Waters for the negative things he said about Ozzy after he died. And that was by sending him a Tiffany box filled with feces, which she used to do to critics who wrote negative reviews about Ozzy's shows without being there. When she did, it was her infant son Jack's poop that would be used. She ultimately decided against it, saying, “Even that is a waste, to send [crap] to him. It's a waste because he's really insignificant. But I just thought, anybody that passes has a family… you don't do that.” (Sharon's not the first musician's wife to do that. Paul and Linda McCartney sent some of their daughter Stella's poop to a journalist who earned their trust, then betrayed them.)Going forward, Sharon says she's continuing to work on an Ozzy bio-pic and that she knows who she wants to play him. When asked if it was Yunglbud she didn't confirm nor deny.https://youtu.be/aaLMsEJKZEQ Kurt Cobain's MTV Unplugged Martin D-18E has been donated to the Royal College of Music London by Peter Freedman, who paid $6,010,000 for it at an auction in 2020. He co-founded The Balancing Act who signed to I.R.S., put out three excellent albums, toured with 10,000 Maniacs and They Might Be Giants before calling it a day in 1989. After the band broke up, Aron became an in-demand session musician and over the years he's collaborated with Leonard Cohen, The Dream Syndicate, Rickie Lee Jones, Milo Binder, Susanna Hoffs, Brian Wilson, Michael Penn and Peter Himmelman. Speaking of Brian Wilson, yes, that's Wilie in Love & Mercy and he was also a consultant for the Beatles doc Eight Days A Week. Willie also has worked as a film and television composer, a producer of children's music and a composer for commercials and music libraries. Additionally, he helped develop the curriculum and write original songs for a Los Angeles-based children's music space and company called Play Music (play-losangeles.com) and he also earned a a Master's Degree in clinical psychology from Antioch University in Los Angeles. As for the bands he plays in currently, the list is long, but let's just start with Moremen/Bonebrake with Matthew Sweet guitarist John Moremen and X drummer DJ Bonebrake, an improvisation outfit called Mushroom, The Vince Melouney Sect featuring original Bee Gees guitarist Vince Melouney, and the all-star musical collective known as The Wild Honey Orchestra that raises money for autism. All of which brings us to Thee Holy Brothers, which finds Willie teaming up with his pal Marvin Etzioni who you might remember from Lone Justice and his appearance on this podcast. The duo's new album "High In My Balloon" is a sterling platter of rootsy stomp and jangling pop that's pure melodic joy. And this conversation is equally joyful and it's also a reminder that being a nice person like Willie Aron leads to lasting friendships and as we all know, without lasting friendships, none of us would last. www.theeholybrothers.com (http://www.theeholybrothers.com) www.bombshellradio.com www.stereoembersmagazine.com (http://www.stereoembersmagazine.com) www.alexgreenbooks.com (http://www.alexgreenbooks.com) Stereo Embers The Podcast IG + BLUESKY: @emberspodcast editor@stereoembersmagazine.com

The Not Ready for Prime Time Podcast: The Early Years of SNL
Its only been a few weeks since the first ever nuclear meltdown in United States history but that doesn't stop SNL from using it as inspiration for one of the most epic & outstanding sketches of the original era. Richard Benjamin, giving off strong Buck Henry vibes, takes the reins for a Saturday Night Live outing that is – while short on quantity – quite high on quality. We may not get many bits this episode, but almost all the ones we do get deliver. John Belushi's absence! The Nerds! Chico Escuela's comeback! A Rodney Dangerfield cameo?!! Indeed, there is still A LOT to talk about. Our old friend, Ian Fermaglich from Ian Talks Comedy, makes his return to The Early Years to drop some knowledge on Roseanne Rosannadanna, the Mets, and goes REAL deep on the host. Perhaps…too deep? Also…Rickie Lee Jones is the musical guest.---------------------------------Subscribe today!Follow us on social media: X (Twitter): NR4PTProjectBluesky: nr4ptproject.bsky.socialInstagram: nr4ptprojectFacebook: The Not Ready for Prime Time ProjectContact Us: Website: https://www.nr4project.comEmail: nr4ptproject@gmail.com

Howie Klein has been my regular Thursday guest for over a dozen years now, but our friendship goes back further to the early 90s, when I was doing rock radio in Los Angeles and he was president of Reprise Records. When Howie left Reprise and Warner Brothers as Time Warner and AOL merged, he began devoting all of his time to progressive politics, launching Down with Tyranny and the Blue America PAC.Danny Goldberg also worked in the music industry as a personal manager, record company president, public relations man and journalist since the late 1960s. When Howie and I first met, Danny managed Nirvana, Hole, Sonic Youth, Bonnie Raitt, The Allman Brothers, Rickie Lee Jones and more. From 2005-2006, Danny was CEO of Air America Radio. That was a few years before I joined the network and hosted a nightly show there. All three of us share the common experience of working in the music industry and being very involved in progressive politics. Today, we're all dealing with our current political situation as best we can. Admittedly, I am not handling it well. Two weeks ago on the show, Howie mentioned that he had dinner with his dear old friend Danny Goldberg, and told me that Danny had some very important and insightful thoughts on surviving these dark days and fighting back, and suggested we have Danny join us on the show. So he is doing that today. They'll be here for the second half-hour.Tonight, Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio Cortez will be in my neck of the woods. They're heading out west as part of Bernie's Fighting Oligarchy tour. I will be there and will bring you coverage tomorrow and Monday. They're leading the way of the resistance, but it's up to all of us. At the top of the show, I'll share some more constructive ways we can and are fighting back. It's all in our hands right now...
Tony Braunagel, Terry Wilson & Snuffy Walden Live on Game Changers With Vicki Abelson What do you get when you Zoom with three amigos from Texas who go back over 50 years? A whole lot of fun, rock stories galore, and a ton of love. The Grammy, Emmy, BMI, and Blues Award Winning trio of Snuffy Walden, Tony Braunagel, and Terry Wilson took us back to the 60s in Houston, playing at the Cellar, a strip club in Houston, Tony and Terry off with Johnny Nash and Snuffy off with Stray Dog to open for Emerson, Lake and Palmer. They all ended up in London, there was Rabbit, Paul Kossoff, Free, Back Street Crawler, Pete Townshend, and Eric Burdon for all of them, at least twice. Some great war stories along the way… there was Michael Ruff, some crashed cars and trashed hotel rooms. Tony took us through his time with Rickie Lee Jones, Bonnie Raitt, and The Blues Brothers backup band, leading to be an actor and musician on According to Jim. Snuffy getting Chaka Khan, Donna Summers and then segueing to TV, Thirty Something and The Wonder Years, his first foray in––both Emmy-winning shows that year, leading to the West Wing and his own Emmy. Terry partnering with Teresa James in music and in life, their Grammy nod, his song-writing, producing through his latest for Back Street Crawler's Terry Slesser which reunited him with Tony and Terry. They've shared many stages and sessions over the years, but it's their rock-solid friendship borne in decades-long history that sweetens their song. What a joy to be in their joy. A great time was had by all. Lucky me and you to be a fly on that wall. "House Of Steam" Putting it simply the L.A.-born Nels Cline's resume' is so deep, to quote Mark Eitzel, it "would make the ocean proud." The guitarist and composer is one of the most respected names in the business and though he's perhaps best known these days for being the guitarist of Wilco, let's not single story Mr. Cline, because his body of work is varied and extensive. Aside from his early jazz work with his twin brother Alex, he's played with everyone from the Geraldine Fibbers to Mike Watt to Thurston Moore. But that doesn't even scratch the surface. Cline has played on close to 200 albums in jazz, pop, rock, country, and experimental music. Let me give you a few of those 200 to play with: Yoko Ono, Henry Kaiser, Firehose, Wayne Kramer, Rickie Lee Jones, John Zorn, Ramblin' Jack Elliot, Neil Finn, Lee Ranaldo and Chris Stamey. And belive me when I tell you that's a heavily expurgated list. Over the years Cline has been in bands with his pal Mike Watt Floored By Four, band with his wife Yuka Honda of Cibo Matto and he's had the Nels Cline Singers, the Nels Cline Trio, and the Nels Cline 4. Now comes The Consentrik Quartet, which is Cline along with saxophonist Ingrid Laubrock, bassist Chirs Lightcap and drummer Tom Rainey. Improvisational, experimental and downright wonderful, the band's debut album is a profound blend of rich cycle grooves, unexpected rhythmic excursions, and subtle meter innovations. It's marvelous work. Filled with delicate percussive brushes, virtuoso sax fills, prowling bass lines idiosyncratic sax melodies and Cline's nimble guitar lines moving through each composition with dextrous finesse, it's hard to think of a richer listening experience in recent memory. It's hard to think of a nicer guy as well--Nels is a lovely fellow and now you get to meet him. www.nelscline.com (http://www.nelscline.com) www.bombshellradio.com (http://www.bombshellradio.com) www.stereoembersmagazine.com (http://www.stereoembersmagazine.com) www.alexgreenbooks.com (http://www.alexgreenbooks.com) Stereo Embers The Podcast IG & Bluesky: @emberspodcast Email: editor@stereoembersmagazine.com

Aaaand we are back for part 2 of the magnum octopus that is the David Weiss/Was interview with a cast list including Ozzy Osbourne, Madonna, Mel Torme, Kim Basinger, Bob Dylan, Versace, George Harrison, Rickie Lee Jones, etc, etc.3. OUT COME THE FREAKS (1981-90)After a brief preamble taking in his relationship with Don and diversions with The Rolling Stones and Rickie Lee Jones, we tackle the many iterations of the WNW classic, Out Come Freaks. We go through the litany of characters that populate the lyrics and David defines which were based on real people. 4. SWEET PEA ATKINSON LP (1982)A little detour as the brothers decide to make a Sweet Pea Atkinson solo LP, Don't Walk Away, writing a handful of songs for the occasion, some of which are pretty darn good.5. BORN TO LAUGH AT TORNADOES (1983) The first classic WNW album is born with contributions from Doug Fieger, Mitch Ryder and Mel Torme. Discussion on what I think should have been the four massive hits on the album....6. SHAKE YOUR HEAD (1983)...One of which eventually did become their biggest hit in the UK in 1992 (yes, even bigger than Boom-Boom-Shackaklackalacka-Boom).Discussion on the earlier incarnation with a on-the-cusp-of-fame Madonna and Ozzy Osbourne. Plus the 90s version with Kim Basinger and Ozzy. Great anecdote from David with name-drops galore.David is on Twitter @HennyYoungbloodDonations gratefully received via PayPal - 80sography@gmail.com That Flashing Tie Was A Riot!Send us a text

Jesse Malin is about as New York as you can get. How New York is he? Well, he's in a Martin Scorsese movie for starters. Jesse got his start in the hardcore band Heart Attack before pivoting to the rough and ready D-Generation in the ‘90s. After that band's demise, Jesse made an even harder pivot when he turned to his acoustic guitar and released the Ryan Adams-produced THE FINE ART OF SELF DESTRUCTION — in effect, reinventing himself as a rock and roll troubadour and NYC ambassador. And then about a year and a half ago, Jesse suffered a rare spinal stroke that threatened his ability to ever walk again. But in true LIFER fashion —and with the help of his community and his friends— Malin has soldiered on and is gearing up for a pair of benefit shows at the Beacon Theater on December 1st and 2nd that will mark his return to the stage. It's a pleasure to have Jesse on the show this week to put some shit into perspective for us and talk about Johnny Thunders, CBGB's, Bruce Springsteen, Ian Hunter, “Bringing Out The Dead”, Green Day, Rickie Lee Jones and a WHAT'S THE BEST?!? with The Clash. The future is unwritten, everybody!

When Rickie Lee Jones burst onto the music scene in 1979, she was an immediate sensation. There was no one remotely like her. When week's guest - Minneapolis singer/songwriter Pamela McNeill - picked up Jones' debut on cassette at a truck stop, she was looking for some cool female-fronted music to pop into her Walkman for the long drives to gigs sitting shotgun. She got that, and more. Welcome to Coolsville... Songs discussed in this episode: Only Love Can Break Your Heart - Rickie Lee Jones; The Ocean, Give Back My Love - Pamela McNeill; Chuck E's In Love - Rickie Lee Jones; Jitterbug Boy - Tom Waits; 50 Ways To Leave Your Lover - Paul Simon; Saturday Afternoons In 1963, Night Train, Young Blood, Easy Money - Rickie Lee Jones; Such A Night - Dr. John; The Last Chance Texaco, It Must Be Love, Danny's All-Star Joint, Coolsville - Rickie Lee Jones; When I'm Alone - Lissie; Dixie Chicken - Little Feat; Weasel and the White Boys Cool, Company, After Hours (Twelve Bars Past Midnight) - Rickie Lee Jones; Marie - Randy Newman; The Ocean - Pamela McNeill

Howie Klein has been doing a weekly segment on my show for more than a dozen years now. He and I first met some 30+ years ago on Los Angeles where I was doing (really great) music radio and he was President of Reprise Records. When Howie exited the music biz, he turned his energies toward getting real progressives elected to office. He began blogging at DownWithTyranny.com. In 2006, Howie joined forces with Heather "Digby" Parton of Digby's Hullabaloo (digbysblog.net) and John Amato of CrooksandLiars.com. They created the Blue America PAC, enlisting the help of Jacquie Propps (@Jacqrat) to help with the organizational aspects of running a PAC. Jaquie wrote "Fighting The Right Wing Since 2006" for the Blue America blog to reacquaint the blogosphere with Blue America, now in its 18th year. (Read it at https://blueamerica.crooksandliars.co...) We agreed that with the most consequential election season of our lives underway, this would be a good time to get some of the players together to recognize the work they do and shine a spotlight on this year's group of Blue America endorsed candidates. So, joining Howie and me today -- Digby, of course. And Tom Maxwell. Huh? Tom Maxwell is a musician. You probably know him from his time with the Squirrel Nut Zippers. In 2006, Tom contributed a song, "Have You Had Enough?" --sung by Rickie Lee Jones - to one of the first Blue America campaigns, that one to oust the predatory Republican Speaker of the House Denny Hastert. It was a success and the campaign was a hit. And the rest, as they say, is history! They'll all join in at around the 30 minute mark. But we'll start with some news and memories spurred by the news that OJ Simpson has died. Open the floodgates.... --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/nicolesandler/message

Rickie Lee Jones hit it big with her debut album in 1979. The following year she won the Grammy for Best New Artist, and over the course of the next four decades, she released numerous albums that pulled inspiration from jazz, rock, electronic music, and even musical-theater. In late April, Rickie released her latest album, Pieces Of Treasure, where she sings songs from the American songbook with a jazz slant. Producer Russ Titelman, who produced Rickie's first two albums, reunited with her on her latest and helped inspire Rickie to find comfort in a lower register. The result is an oftentimes sultry meditation on aging and survival. On today's episode Bruce Headlam talks to Rickie Lee Jones about her decades-long fight to sing jazz even though she is often viewed as an outsider. She also tells stories about leaving home as a young teenager, and the abuse she endured while trying to survive on her own. And she plays songs from her career including one she wrote after seeing John Lennon appear in a dream. And just a note before we get started – this episode contains descriptions of sexual abuse, and might not be appropriate for all listeners. You can hear a playlist of some of our favorite Rickie Lee Jones songs HERE.See omny.fm/listener for privacy information.
