Jorma Starratt grew up in Athens, GA, spending his early years immersed in the vibrant music scene at the legendary 40 Watt Club by the age of 10. His father, Ken Starratt, was a member of the iconic band The Squalls. It was through these experiences Jorma was on the cusp of something truly groundbreaking. Athens was producing bands such as R.E.M, The B'52's, Pylon, Elf Power, Of Montreal, Five Eight, Wide Spread Panic, Drive by Truckers and so many more. Once he finished high school, it was inevitable he would take his upbringing straight into the music scene He put together the band Prozak, which became very popular and reached impressive heights. Unfortunately, some of the band members chose different paths, and the band eventually dissolved. As the old adage says, when one door closes, one door opens. Into that door comes an exciting new direction for Jorma. Flag pole writes, "In the early aughts, outsiders viewed the Classic City as the home of redneck rap, thanks to Bubba Sparxxx scoring a 2001 MTV hit with “Ugly.” In 2003, Herb and Skills set the record straight. Under the direction of producers Jorma Starratt and Hano Leathers, rappers Bird, Ishues, Jawz of Life, Fort Knox and more laid down stone-cold classics with a Wu-Tang sword style. For proof, look no further than Ishues' razor-sharp verses on “The Saga Continues.” It's forgotten history now, but press play on Spotify and the lyrical depth, full-bodied production and cinematic samples weave together a disarmingly profound time capsule from a sophisticated era of Southern hip hop.Jorma talks to me about these exciting days, going out to L.A. and how he wishes he could go back to some of those times again. Who knows......maybe he will. Elf Power is an indie rock band from Athens, Georgia, known for its blend of psychedelic, folk, and dreamy rock sounds. They got started in the mid-90s and quickly became part of the “Elephant 6 Collective,” a group of bands like Neutral Milk Hotel and The Apples in Stereo who created unique, experimental music.I had sold a lot of Elf Power's music in the record stores I worked. I had not listened to them in quite some time. I had forgotten how their music is often dreamy and mysterious, full of quirky lyrics and catchy tunes. Seeing them several times now since I began this podcast has opened up a new and more educated listening for me. Their songs explore themes like nature, dreams, and the surreal, and their albums are like journeys into different worlds. With frontman Andrew Rieger's distinct voice and poetic lyrics, Elf Power has a sound that's both gentle and powerful. Being able to talk to Andrew of Elf Power was not only a history lesson beginning with Andrew's recording solo 4 track cassettes, to recording in studios with some of the top producers in the industry. This resulted in their discography capturing a mix of haunting melodies, thought-provoking lyrics, and a musical style that's earthy yet otherworldly. I was so happy to see them live, and I am still rekindling my love of this band. This talk with Andrew was perfect as I listened to some of Andrew's thoughts that creeped into the side of quirky meets surreal. I hope you have a great auditory experience listening to Andrew Rieger.Show AthCastMusic (©): The Music of Athens Georgia, Now and Then.SEASON: 3 Episode 34Length: 39:23PUBLISHED:Updated Weekly on ThursdayEngineer: Kayla DoverIntern: Kati Putman (UGA Music School)Recorded at Tweed Recording Audio Production Schoolhttps://tweedrecording.comCONTACT FOR ATHCASTMUSIC:marlene@athcastmusic.cominstagram: AthCastMusicFaceBook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61550294283019INSTAGRAM: ELFPOWERBANDFACEBOOK: https:/facebook.com/elfpowerWebsite: elfpower.comBAND CAMP: bit.ly/4flHImAOR https://elfpower,bandcamp.com

Trvy and the Enemy are my guests this week on AthCastMusic!I must say, having them on was an unexpected session of laughing, expressions of passions along with opening up to very personal emotions with Trvy. This band has a camaraderie like no other. We laughed that they never could get divorced.Trvy (trevey) aka Trevor Wiggins and the Enemy is made up of Trvy on vocals, drummer Rio Crane, bassist James Stickney and guitarist Robbie Rapp. Crane, Stickney and Rapp are childhood friends who had played together in a couple of bands before meeting Trvy via the Athens hip hop scene. Trvy already had quite the reputation as one of Athens' best MCs not to mention he won the Vic Chesnutt Songwriter of the Year award in 2023.Trvy and bandmates spoke about their childhood and how 3 of them grew up near each other and spent many days exploring Athens on their bicycles and how they were all driven to playing music. It's a very touching story how they have remained friends and TRVY finding this trio of friends. Trvy says "The goal wasn't to have musicians backing me up to re-create songs that I already made. I wanted to be in a band." And a band he did become. Such an insightful conversation with these gentlemen. You may find yourself dancing and singing the night away. He's put together a new band that takes these covers to a whole new level. No matter where you see Jay, he'll bring back memories for some and a music history lesson for others.Jay talked about his love of Athens, his family, and his experience as a member of Drive-By Truckers. I met VernoVernon J. Thornsberry is a musician and artist who lives and works in Athens, Georgia. Thornsberry is originally from New Orleans, where he was mentored for many years by George Dureau, an artist who is said to have inspired the work of Robert Mapplethorpe. But there's more. Vernon is also a baker who started baking at the Grit, which unfortunately closed last year. He has continued baking at the new location for the Daily Groceries new location and still making delicious vegan treats. His music infuses the band Organically Programmed Orchestra, which plays the washboard, and he still has his own band that will show up in Athens when you least expect it.. The Reverend Connor Tribble's conversation begins with Athens, Georgia, where he attended high school and first emerged as a powerful presence in the local music scene. Long before Athens earned its fame as a musical hub, he was already making waves, and earning the notable title "The Godfather of Punk" .Connor's ambition soon led him to New York City, where he became a legend in his own right. Musicians and fans alike hailed him as “The Best Frontman They Had Ever Seen,” captivated by his blend of sharp, humor-laden lyrics, electrifying onstage banter, and searing musical energy. He sharpened his performance at iconic venues like Café Wha?, the very stage where Jimi Hendrix had once launched his own career. Tribble's charisma and talent quickly became the stuff of legends, and he remains dearly beloved back in Athens, where his sold-out shows are a testament to his lasting impact on the city's cultural landscape. Now dividing his time between Athens and Mexico, Connor and his wife have embraced the importance of family, choosing a lifestyle that allows them to be closer to loved ones. My conversation with Connor was spiritual and his insights, humor, and gratitude for life's journey left a deep impression. Heffner is a contemporary alternative indie band living here in Athens, GA. It began with members Taylor Cotton and Reagan Byrd, high school pals moving to Athens to go to school. They started playing with several bands around town. Wanting a band of their own, they knew if they started building a band, other members would come, and they did! Soon after one by one band members McKendrick Bearden, Will and Lars Heffner, and Tommy Trautwein joined the band.Their sophomore album, “Perfect Heaven,” catapulted them into regional success and the new “darlings” of Athens. With the release of their latest single “Truck,” Heffner exposes how their songwriting has grown and how their unique blend of melodic riffs, and style combines elements of alternative rock with influences from Folk and Pop. Vanessa was born in Atlanta, GA, to a textile worker and a housewife. After completing her elementary and secondary education, she moved to Athens to attend the University of Georgia, graduating with a BFA in 1978. In 1979, fellow students Randy Bewley, Michael Lachowski, and Curtis Crowe asked her to audition for their band, Pylon. This performance art project, initiated by three art students who barely knew how to play their instruments, aimed only to perform in New York City, inspired by the chart-breaking B-52's, and then disband. However, after their supposed one-off performance at the Art Rock Festival and a write-up in Interview Magazine, they decided to continue as long as it was enjoyable. They opened for Gang of Four after many Athens bands encouraged Harrah's in NYC to book them. From there, they traveled widely, playing alongside bands like Talking Heads, B-52's, and U2. They first disbanded in 1983, reunited once, and had their final breakup in 2009 after the loss of their beloved bandmate Randy Bewley.Gradually, Vanessa began exploring new musical collaborations and formed a new band called Pylon Reenactment Society (PRS). In a 2016 interview, she said, “It's been inspirational, if that's the right word, to be able to play this music again. I really don't want people to forget Pylon. These are different people, and we are re-enacting this experience, so it's not exactly Pylon, but it's fresh and done in the same spirit." And this band certainly has spirit! It is incredibly fun to watch.I can't say enough about Vanessa and how much she captivated me from the first word she spoke. They met through mutual connections during their high school years and have been musically connected ever since. The band solidified as a trio in Athens, and the recent addition of Rafal, (RAFFLE) a born and bred Athenian, on trumpet has given their sound a distinctive melodic rock vibe.Flagpole, Athens' music magazine, celebrated the band's arrival in the city with the release of their five-song EP, in 2022, If We Haven't Said It Already, produced by Well Kept's Tommy Trautwein. Thirty years later, Bill returned to Athens on a new journey that revealed a Southern city leading the way in progressive politics and the beginnings of true racial equality, once again featuring members of R.E.M., the B-52's and Pylon, only now to include a new generation of artists and activists such as Mariah Parker aka Linqua Franqa, Kishi Bashi, Patterson Hood and the Drive-By Truckers. My conversation with Bill was full of laughs, stories and a vulnerable account of his days when things weren't so good.Remember, If you don't listen, you can't hear. Jim White has allowed my listeners into his journey of growing up in Pensacola Florida, having a tumultuous childhood along with being a member of a Pentacostal Church for 10 Years. Prior to being a musician, Jim worked around the US and parts of Europe doing several jobs, such as dishwasher, landscaper, lifeguard, cook, surfboard laminator, and even modeling! All roads from these occupations and a Pentecostal life, lead him to NYC where he began driving a cab and eventually attended NYU's Film School. Toward the end of Jim's 13 years in NYC driving a cab, he had what most people would call a nervous breakdown which sometimes brought him thoughts of suicide. When Jim was in his darkest days, he was saved by some miraculous synchronicities. He had begun writing music for no one but himself. Through a series of synchronicities, his recordings made it to David Byrne ( Yes, that David Byrne).Byrne's recognition of White's talent propelled him onto the global stage, where he has since established himself as a prolific songwriter and performer. His life lead him to Athens and here he is, in our home town. You'll want to hear this thought provoking and extraordinary conversation I had with Jim.Jim is also the proud father of Willow Avalon, who has just signed a record deal and exploding onto the music scene. Mike Mantione and Dan Horowitz have been friends since their days at State University of New York (SUNY) in Binghamton NY. They created a band called "The Reasonable Men." "The Reasonable Men" went on to some local infamy as the party-rock band responsible for songs like “What The Fuck's Wrong With My Brain?”, “Two Fat Ladies”, and “What I Imagined is a Movie by Me.” After an unforeseen life changing event for Mike Mantione, the band took a hiatus. When Dan Franz, another member of the band followed his brother to Athens Georgia, Mike and Dan ended up following since Franz had taken all of the bands equipment with them and secured a very affordable apartment! . Franz left the band the name changed to Five Eight. Mike Palmatier eventually left after a serious accident, Patrick Ferguson a local drummer, joined the band. Many hard days and albums followed until they began to get noticed for great music and stage antics, They are still a huge part of the music scene in Athens. Currently a documentary is being made about the band that should be out in the near future. If you've never seen a Five Eight show, it is a musical experience not to be forgotten. Mike Mantione, along with Dave Domizi on bass and vocals, Geoff Melkonian on keyboards and vocals, and Christian Lopez on guitars and mandolin and R.E.M. drummer Bill Berry, is now a part of a new group called the "Bad Ends." Marlene had a crazy conversation with Mike and Dan and really couldn't get much in between! Don't miss Mike and Dan singing 4th of July off of their up and coming Album.
