POPULARITY
In my experience, doing anything worthwhile means that sooner or later, you're going to lock antlers with old guard apologists - people so entrenched in tradition or ideology that they just can't seem to understand a different perspective. Sometimes it's hard to believe that you're even reading the same source material as them! Benjamin L. Corey is an activist, theologian, blogger, speaker, and author of "Undiluted: Rediscovering the Radical Message of Jesus" and "Unafraid: Moving Beyond Fear Based Faith." Over the years, Ben has challenged the long-held positions of mainstream American Christianity on issues of equality, tolerance, and what it means to emulate the character of Jesus. We had a great time talking about his run-ins with church bureaucracy, and managing depression and other mental health conditions using ketamine and other psychedelics. Enjoy! Nov 3, 2019, | Pastor Nathan Elms We live in an era of intense political, social, and ethnic division… Hate begets hate… Shame begets shame… Anger begets anger… We have more in common than we do apart… “Drawing identity from any area other than the source of life is a spiritual death sentence, and worse, it's contagious, because it gives birth to tribalism. However, when we return to our central identity of image-bearers designed to receive love from and reflect love to others, we are naturally invited to shed all of the unloving, fear-based tribal behaviors that come from loyalty to the label.” ― Benjamin L. Corey, Unafraid: Moving Beyond Fear-Based Faith In the face of diversity, some find a reason for fear and insecurity and even hostility. Diversity has led to division: political, racial, gender, cultural and economic division. There has always been some of this, but now it seems to be more prevalent. Does God have anything to say about this? The church is what God has to say. The Church is called to be a Christ-centered community of diversity. Its very life proclaims the power of God to overcome the divisions that set people against each other. In his letter to the Galatians, the apostle Paul announced, “In Christ, there is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus.” (Galatians 3:28). The church is to live as people touched by God's grace and no longer defined by the divisions that plague the world. The sign of a carnal church is that it brings the divisions of the world right into the church. Instead of reflecting the light of Christ, we mirror the broken world. Women are discriminated against, racial segregation persists and whenever an international conflict arises, those in the church are frequently uncritical cheerleaders for our nation’s side in the hostility.
Hi Keenes and Queens! Two in a week? I know. I know. There has been so much going on, though. I mean, we got:Your favorite female rapper based upon your lesbian or gay male preferred sexual position. Everything the Trump administration is doing to immigrants and what people are doing when they're fed up and confronting Sarah Sanders and others; Anthony Kennedy retiring because of something shady with his son and Donald Trump; Antwan Rose's unnecessary shooting death; other things we should be concerned with; and my thoughts on the "civility" brigade.Tessa Thompson came out as bisexual and described her kind of connection with Janelle Monae, which sounds like a situationship and not a...well, it's not my life. Also, SCOTUS doesn't like when you tell the truth about Christianity and its crappy history throughout American history.Benjamin L. Episode Transcript Guest: Benjamin L. Corey Thinking about my faith journey, up to date, I realized that I can't be in the minority wondering how many other Christians are only followers as a form of divine fire insurance. How though has this thought and practice actually impacted our walk with our Lord and what does that mean. To discuss this a bit further I was able to pick the brain of Benjamin L. Corey and try to have some honest conversation about construction and deconstruction and what the light at the end of the tunnel means. Guest Bio: Dr. Benjamin L. Corey, is a provocative Christian author, speaker, and blogger. His articles are read by millions each year on platforms such as: TIME, Patheos, and Sojourners, among others. He has been an interviewed guest on CNN, HuffPo Live, and repeated appearances on John Fugelsang. He is a two-time graduate of Gordon-Conwell and holds his doctorate from Fuller Theological Seminary. Unafraid: Moving Beyond Fear-Based Faith: Amazon Connect with Benjamin: Facebook, Twitter: @BenjaminLCorey as well as www.benjaminlcorey.com Special Music for this episode was provided by VERSES. Tracks include: Be the Light, Holy, and Your Love. VERSES is a Christian Electronic trio from Newcastle, Australia. VERSES was birthed out of a conviction that Luke, the key songwriter of the group, had after trying to grasp the meaning of many of the lyrics to modern Christian Music. So whilst on a trip to NYC in the summer of 2013 the songwriting process began. There was so much about the city and the spiritual journey they were on that caused them to write the "modern day memory verse". Chad Mullinix continues to share how his church does evangelism. Explore the good news of hospitality. Benjamin L. Corey states that, "People leave the church when they can't find community." He also states that, "People leave the church because they get turned off by social climbing, cliques, and nepotism" and "People leave church because they feel lonely." A Barna study found people responded that, "The church feels unfriendly to those who doubt." Lifeway Research reported that people thought the church is unloving. A Twitter poll reported that the church is full of unfriendly church members. For Karen Mains, "Evangelism without a functioning household of God will result in a high mortality rate." What is hospitality? The term philoxenia (φιλοξενία) means “a love for strangers.” We read in Hebrews 13:2, “Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for thereby some have entertained angels unawares.” The good news of hospitality is receiving condescending love. Explore the Westminster Confession of Faith 7.1. Genesis 1:28-29 tells us, “And God blessed them... And God said, "Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the face of all the earth, and every tree with seed in its fruit. You shall have them for food." We read also in Genesis 2:10, “A river flowed out of Eden to water the garden, and there it divided and became four rivers.” Consider God’s gracious love. Consider the Westminster Confession of Faith 7.3. Consider Israel in bondage in Egypt as an example. In Romans 5:8,10 we read, “...but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us... For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son…” Consider that we also need to demonstrate hospitality. Explore Ephesians 5:1-2, 1 John 4:19, and Romans 15:7. Mains states, "Why are our efforts at evangelism often abortive? Because the church has lost the awareness that it is a household of God into which we are to invite the weary and downtrodden in spirit as well as in body." Reflect on 1 John 3:16-18. We also need to support those going out with the good news. Matthew 10:9-11 tells us, “Acquire no gold or silver or copper for your belts, no bag for your journey, or two tunics or sandals or a staff, for the laborer deserves his food. And whatever town or village you enter, find out who is worthy in it and stay there until you depart.” Consider that part of the way whether a person receives the gospel or not is whether they receive you. Explore 3 John 2-5,8.

This week’s listener-requested episode goes after the issues surrounding the afterlife, particularly heaven and hell. Jeff, Mona, and Allen discuss the historical and cultural context behind “hell” passages in the Bible, why they lead us to rethink concepts that have been around since the Middle Ages, speculate about the this-worldly nature of a future heaven, and then disagree about how all of this relates to the here-and-now. Their discussion is topped off with an old-fashioned round of Wacky News. Christian bridge-builder, Benjamin L. Corey blogs as Formerly Fundie on Patheos. He graduated cum laude from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary in his home state of Maine with two Masters degrees in theology and missiology and is a current doctoral student at Fuller Theological Seminary. He is the author of “Undiluted: Rediscovering The Radical Message of Jesus.” He is one of those, like so many that we have on this show, that have followed (or taken) Jesus in the opposite direction of today’s hijacked Christianity, to what he calls non-violent enemy love. From the highly individualized Western Christian culture to Jesus’ socially collective community-driven message. Ben is highly active in helping out the least of these and making the world a better place. I think, like so many progressive Christians, he’s one step away from humanism, but by his own admission, couldn’t be an atheist even if he wanted to.
