Legendary producer Eddie Kramer shares the history and legacy of Electric Lady Studios, the revolutionary space built for Jimi Hendrix's creative genius - from its groundbreaking design, Hendrix's final sessions, to the incredible impact this iconic studio had on rock music history. Topics Include: Electric Lady wasn't just a studio; it was Jimi Hendrix's creative sanctuary. Back in the ‘70s, having your own studio as a rock artist was unheard of—Jimi changed that. They transformed a basement nightclub into a cutting-edge studio, unlike anything else at the time. Jimi lived just blocks away—he'd walk over with his guitar and just dive into creating. The vibe at Electric Lady was pure Jimi—his vision made it an extension of himself. Eddie and the team prepped the studio for 24-tracks, even though it started at 16. The studio had custom innovations, like seating designed to keep friends out of sightlines. Hendrix loved working fast, and Electric Lady let him capture that energy in every session. Hendrix recorded there for four months before heading to Europe—and never returned. The documentary gives a glimpse of that magical time, full of outtakes and alternate mixes. Kramer talks about how they audited tapes and recorded new songs, blending old and new ideas. Fun fact: The round windows in the studio doors? Jimi's idea. He loved to keep things unique. The Village was Jimi's playground—he could walk around without being bothered. Eddie recalls marathon sessions with Jimi, cracking jokes between takes, always keeping it light. Hendrix was a master at balancing creativity and fun—there was always laughter in the room. Eddie mixed a lot of iconic music at Electric Lady, including tracks from David Bowie and Zeppelin. Hendrix wanted to expand his sound with strings and horns—his musical vision kept growing. The final sessions at Electric Lady were intense, but full of joy and excitement. Electric Lady still has the same vibe, with a layout that's barely changed in over 50 years. The five LP box set coming out captures the magic of those original sessions—essential listening. Hendrix built Electric Lady to be his personal space, and it became a landmark for music history. Jimi Hendrix built the Electric Lady recording studio in New York, but died a few weeks after it opened. A new documentary shows how later generations of artists made it a sanctuary. In deposition tapes obtained by NPR, former LA Mayor Eric Garcetti says he didn’t know about his aide Rick Jacobs’ alleged sexual misconduct. Former city staffers say Garcetti is lying. An Ohio judge ruled that several abortion laws now violate the state constitution — after voters approved an amendment last year guaranteeing the right to an abortion. From Vice President Harris’ bespoke suits to Senator Vance sporting the first beard in decades, KCRW looks at the messages politicians are sending through their fashion choices.

52 West 8th Street in Manhattan is a famous address in the history of music. It's the home of Electric Lady Studios, built by Jimi Hendrix and his collaborators in the late 1960s. The space was designed as a home for Hendrix to have a safe and comfortable environment to record and explore new ideas. However, the studio was only finished shortly before his unexpected death. A new documentary tells the story of Electric Lady's construction as told by the musicians and engineers who worked alongside Hendrix. Director and Hendrix estate archivist John McDermott and architect John Storyk discuss the film, “Electric Lady Studios: A Jimi Hendrix Vision,” opening at the Quad Cinema on August 9.

Í yfir 50 ár hefur Eddie Kramer sett fingraför sín á sögu rokksins sem um munar, enda unnið með nokkrum af stærstu nöfnum þessarar sögu. Má þar nefna; The Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton, David Bowie, Bad Company, The Beatles og svo miklu, miklu fleiri. Kramer er þó hvað þekktastur fyrir þrjú langtímasambönd sín hvað upptökur varðar. Langtímasambönd við Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin og okkar menn í KISS. Eddie Kramer fæddist í Cape Town í Suður-Afríku þann 19.apríl árið 1942 og er hann því nýorðinn 80 ára gamall. Eftir að Eddie flutti til London frá heimalandinu snemma á sjöunda áratugnum hóf hann sinn afar farsæla upptökuferil og starfaði hann fljótlega í nokkrum af þekktustu hljóðverum borgarinnar þar sem hann tók upp fjöldan allan af hljómsveitum sem við þekkjum svo vel, eins og t.d Jimi Hendrix. Það var svo árið 1968 að Kramer færði sig vestur um haf og til Bandaríkjanna þar sem hann hóf störf hjá Record Plant hljóðverinu í New York og hélt áfram að vinna með Jimi Hendrix o.fl. Árið 1969 tók Eddie svo að sér að velja inn tækjabúnað í hljóðverinu sem Hendrix vinur hans var að setja upp, Electric Lady, og starfaði hann þar sem upptöku og tæknistjóri næstu árin, en það var einmitt þar sem okkar menn í KISS koma inn í myndina. Eddie hefur tekið upp mikið af lifandi tónlist á ferlinum og ber þar helst að nefna ALIVE plötur KISS auk sjálfrar Woodstock hátíðina, en hana tók hann nánast alla upp, grunlaus um söguna sem hann var þá að hljóðrita. Við fögnum afmælinu með Eddie f#$%ing Kramer í þessum þætti og kíkjum saman á viðburðaríkan og frekar flottan feril hans. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Broken Record with Rick Rubin, Malcolm Gladwell, Bruce Headlam and Justin Richmond

Today we have the one and only Patti Smith on the show. Patti is the prototypical downtown, New York City artist. Her 1975 debut album Horses is credited as one of the masterpieces of its time. It also cemented her as one of rock n roll's great lyricists. But her writing extends far beyond music. Her 2010 memoir, Just Kids, won the National Book Award for its brilliant portrayal of the ‘70s bohemian art scene in New York, and Patti's experience living in the Chelsea Hotel with the famed photographer, Robert Mapplethorpe. Today Patti publishes near-daily offerings of poems, songs and serialized fiction on her Substack newsletter. It's a journal of sorts that she started during the solitary days of the pandemic.  On today's episode, Malcolm Gladwell talks to Patti Smith about her writing in the studio Jimi Hendrix built, Electric Lady. It was there, she tells Malcolm, that she met Hendrix in 1970—just weeks before he passed away. Patti also talks about hanging out with and writing lyrics for Janis Joplin, and she recalls the fun she had during a failed attempt to cover Adele in concert.
