John got hung up in the recent storms and was trapped at various airports so thankfully - democratic strategist Max Burns jumped in last minute and helped out. Max Burns takes the reins diving into Trump's recent comments about Cuba, where he mistakenly claims the island is not in a hurricane zone. This absurdity sets the tone for a discussion filled with political satire and insights. Then, joining Max is Salt Lake City Council member Ava Lopez Chavez, who brings to light the alarming news that the Department of Homeland Security has secretly negotiated a deal to turn a warehouse in Salt Lake City into one of the nation's largest immigrant detention camps. Ava passionately discusses the implications of this deal, emphasizing the need for transparency and accountability in government actions that affect local communities. As the conversation unfolds, veteran journalist Brian Karam joins to provide his perspective on the ongoing chaos in Washington. He highlights the dysfunction within Congress and the alarming shift towards voter suppression tactics, particularly through the proposed Save America act. Brian's insights shed light on the potential consequences of these actions for American democracy and the urgent need for civic engagement.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Ep. 225 (Part 2 of 2) | In Part 2 of our eloquent, passionate, and humorous, dialogue with comedian John Fugelsang, author of the important and irreverent book, Separation of Church and Hate: A Sane Person's Guide to Taking Back the Bible from Fundamentalists, Fascists, and Flock-Fleecing Frauds, we come to understand what fundamentalism is, and what it signifies for our culture, our politics, and our future. John outlines five common features that characterize fundamentalism across religious traditions, pointing out that fundamentalist Christians have more in common with fundamentalist Muslims than they do with moderate and liberal Christians. “I go after fundamentalists of all religions,” John says, “because it's turning people off to faith—ruining Christianity, ruining Islam, ruining Judaism.” This is the tragedy for John and what fuels his passion for calling out the hypocrites who do hateful things in the name of religion.John also enlightens us as to what Christian nationalism is all about, starting way back: “In the U.S., our history of Christianity is inseparable from our history of white supremacy.” Christian nationalism's religion is power—a gospel of domination over love. Authoritarian leaders and their followers all worship power, he continues, and fills us in on how Christian nationalism is playing out in Russia now. John's own message is not hateful; his intention is to make it clear that Jesus always taught love and kindness; to suggest that if the Church wants to survive, it needs to go back to the teachings of Jesus; and to help us come together in a common understanding of fundamental values. “It's hard to love the bigot in your family,” John says. But we can “…hold to the deepest values, the most love, and do what needs to be done with love. We can't hate the haters back, but we have to beat them without hating them—that's the challenge.” Recorded December 18, 2025.“The greatest tragedy to me is when people think that something is religion and don't realize it's just fundamentalism.”Topics & Time Stamps – Part 2Fundamentalist Christians have more in common with fundamentalist Muslims than they do with moderate & liberal Christians (00:39) 5 common features of fundamentalism across traditions: women are inferior, violence is okay, punishment over healing & a victimhood complex (00:51)MLK was deeply unpopular at the time of his death—just like Jesus (03:43)Every generation there's a new word to smear the virtues of love, empathy & caring for others (05:01)Christian nationalism: a gospel of domination over love (07:59)Prosperity gospel: God will reward you if you give to our Church (09:50)Christian nationalism in Russia (13:47)Authoritarian leaders & followers all worship power (15:34)If the Church wants to survive, they need to go back to the teachings of Jesus (17:28)Recreating Jesus as a white guy led to centuries of racism and cruelty (19:55)Using the Bible as camouflage: most people haven't read it & figure others haven't either (21:06)What weirdness in the Bible stands out most for John? Our guest is Dr. Jerry Jaffe, a Toledo native and professional stand up comic who has written a book titled "Religious Satire in the Era of New Atheism" He will introduce you to some of the ideas and examples from his research. Focused on the context of the post-9/11 American culture phenomenon, sometimes referred to as the New Atheism – as embodied by public intellectuals such as Christopher Hitchens, Sam Harris, and Richard Dawkins – Dr, Jaffe documents the rise of comedic satire in relation to evangelical beliefs and religious dogma. Drawing on the author's own experience of stand-up performance, he examines the comedy of figures such as Mark Maron, Bill Maher, and Ricky Gervais and presents material from interviews with comedians including Lewis Black, John Fugelsang, and Leigh Ann Lord.We also discuss the tarnishing of New Atheism because several members turned out to be problematic individuals with some holding transphobic views and others being accused of islamophobia.Dr. Jaffe discusses islamophobia in comedy and how it is better to 'punch up' rather than 'punch down'. He also argues that many comics in the US don't satire Islam because comedy works when it is relatable to the audience. He also explains it is better to make fun of the powers that be in a religion rather than the adherents.01:00 Origin of a comedian14:00 Personal favorite part of the book19:38 The fall of New Atheism31:16 Why don't we make fun of Islam?41:28 Future writing plansFull show notes & links usedSubscribe to our free newsletterCheck out our MerchDonate to our Podcast fund

Ep. 224 (Part 1 of 2) | John Fugelsang, author of the brilliant, irreverent book, Separation of Church and Hate: A Sane Person's Guide to Taking Back the Bible from Fundamentalists, Fascists, and Flock-Fleecing Frauds, talks eloquently about the difference between true Christianity as taught by Jesus and the hateful teachings of Christian nationalists and televangelists who are in it for the power and the money. John grew up with a clear notion of what Christianity should look like; his parents lived their faith grounded in peace, love, empathy, and service, dedicating their lives to helping people in need, no matter their color or differences. So John set out to take the Bible back from “small-minded, right-wing, nationalist racists,” because he finds it tragic that vast numbers of people are being alienated from faith altogether, and he wanted to give his readers arguments they could use to face off with right-wing Christians about what the Bible really says. Christians and atheists have told him his book validates all of their beliefs, and he has inspired crowds of atheists to cheer loudly for Jesus.John is an actor, comedian, and talk show host, and his quick wit and well-informed, well-intentioned intellect make for a fast-paced, enjoyable, and educational foray into subjects such as how right-wing nationalists have made Christianity out to be a religion of condemnation and domination; how they quote Saint Paul, with all of his sex hangups and homophobia, rather than Jesus; and how it's always been the Christ followers pushing back against authoritarian Christianity—adding that Jesus' teachings are as threatening to authoritarian power today as they were 2,000 years ago. This is a timely, very important conversation about a subject that involves all of us: reclaiming the foundational values of love, humility, open-mindedness, and service. Recorded December 18, 2025.“Jesus is not about condemnation or domination; his whole movement is about transformation.”Topics & Time Stamps – Part 1Introducing John Fugelsang, award-winning actor & comedian, author of Separation of Church and Hate (00:40)Feeling your religion of peace and love has been hijacked by small-minded, right-wing, nationalist racists (02:59)What was John's experience writing Separation of Church and Hate? Today - John discusses the administrations reasoning for the war in Iran which continued to shift and bend depending on the official and the outlet wishing to know. Meanwhile, attention has shifted to the Strait of Hormuz and oil tankers' ability to safely exit a region long patrolled by Iran. Ships from Britain and France will enter the region to chaperone tankers through the region, but Donald Trump says critical nations that refuse to help, like Spain, will instead see embargoed trade. John also talks about the right wing Christian Nationalists who are pushing for war because they believe the apocalypse will bring Jesus back to earth. Then, he interviews Dr. Angela Simms, an Assistant Professor at Barnard College. They discusses her new book, "Fighting for a Foothold," which examines the structural issues undermining the Black middle class in Prince George's County, Maryland. Her insights shed light on the systemic barriers that persist despite the hard work and dedication of many residents. Next, John speaks with Dr. Anahida Dua, a practicing surgeon and healthcare advocate, who emphasizes the importance of having a decisive and knowledgeable U.S. Surgeon General. She critiques the current public health messaging and highlights the need for clarity and confidence in addressing health crises, particularly in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. And finally, "Comedy Daddy" - Keith Price returns to chat with listeners and bring levity to the doom and gloom.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

In the latest episode - John kicks off with a recap of the State of the Union, where he dissects Trump's remarks, highlighting the discrepancies and the political theater that often overshadows substantive policy discussions. He then talks about Democratic and Republican lawmakers who peppered Trump's nominee for surgeon general with hours of questions at a confirmation hearing, asking Casey Means about her stands on vaccines and more. Means - an un-licensed doctor, entrepreneur, and health influencer - was also questioned heavily about her qualifications and possible conflicts of interest. Then, Bob Cesca is back to joke about Trump's speech and the Epstein files fallout. Next, one of the central themes of the episode is the rise of Christian nationalism in American politics. The God Squad AKA Dillon Naber Cruz and Desimber Rose delve into how this ideology influences policy decisions and shapes the political landscape, often at odds with the foundational principles of democracy. The discussion emphasizes the need for a collective pushback against these trends, advocating for a return to core values of justice and equality. John talks about a Senate vote failing as the clock continues to tick down on DHS funding. A partial shutdown looms unless Republicans can meet the Dem demands. He also discusses Thom Homan who says the immigration crackdown on Minnesota is over, for now, and he and his goons believe they have left the place whiter than they found it. Then, he interviews Dan Flores who is the A. B. Hammond Professor Emeritus of Western History at the University of Montana and the author of eleven books on aspects of American history. They discuss his new book Coyote America which traces both the five-million-year-long biological story of coyotes, as well as their cultural evolution from preeminence in Native American religions to haplessness before the Road Runner. A deeply American tale, the story of the coyote in the American West and then across the entire country is a sort of Manifest Destiny in reverse, with a pioneering hero whose career holds up an uncanny mirror to the successes and failures of American expansionism. Then, John welcomes Stuart Delony. He is a writer and podcaster whose work examines faith, power, and the cultural consequences of certainty. A former pastor, he is the host of the Snarky Faith podcast and a columnist focused on American Christianity, politics, and end-times theology. John discusses his new book The Tribulation Survival Guide is for exvangelicals, spiritual misfits, and connoisseurs of dark humor. This isn't your typical devotional—it's a survivalist satire for anyone who's ever questioned faith, feared the Beast, or accidentally attended a prophecy conference. Delivered with the solemnity of a Cold War safety pamphlet and the wit of a burned-out prophet, this deadpan, government-grade field manual offers step-by-step guidance for navigating the world's most awkward apocalypse. Whether you've been left behind by the Rapture—or just by organized religion—you'll find something disturbingly familiar in its pages. From decoding Antichrist branding strategies to surviving plagues, televangelists, and HOA-controlled hellscapes, this guide blends biting satire with faux-instructional sincerity. Inside you'll find checklists, diagnostic quizzes, heavenly bureaucracy hacks, and DIY hell décor tips (lava optional)—all designed to help you stay alive, or at least mildly amused, through the end of all things.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

John talks about AG Pamela Jo Bondi mouthing off before the House Judiciary Committee for a high-stakes oversight hearing that devolved into a series of combative exchanges with lawmakers. Then, he jokes with podcast rock star Bob Cesca about the Epstein files and Trump's latest mishigas. Next, Desimber Rose and Dillon Naber Cruz AKA The God Squad return to talk smack about white Christian Nationalists and ridicule their absurd hypocrisy. And finally, award-winning democratic strategist Max Burns is back to talk about Trump's plan to gut the EPA.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

When Listeners Say, “Me Too”: Finding Familiarity in Shared Stories – A Listener Voicemail Episode Description:In this special listener voicemail episode, Jen and Amy turn the mic outward—listening closely to the voices, stories, and wisdom of the community that makes this show what it is. From reflections sparked by our Wake Up Call season to deeply personal responses to Jen's book Awake, these messages trace a powerful throughline: what happens when we begin to tell the truth about our lives—and make space for who we're becoming. Listeners share how conversations with Lee C. Camp, John Fugelsang, Melani Sanders, and Chrissy King stirred something awake in them, naming long-held questions around faith, body, identity, and courage. Others call in to reflect on the uncanny resonance of Awake, beginning again and again with the same line: “Jen, our stories are very similar.” This episode is tender, funny, and honest—a reminder that none of us are doing this work alone. It's about waking up, letting go, finding language for the ache, and choosing what comes next—together. If you've ever wondered whether your voice matters here, this episode is your answer. Thought-provoking Quotes: “Our stories are very similar—and hearing that out loud made me realize I'm not behind. I'm just in it.” – FTL Listener “I didn't know how much I needed someone to say, ‘You're allowed to change your mind,' until this season.” – FTL Listener “That episode felt like someone finally put words to the questions I've been carrying quietly.” – FTL Listener “Something in me relaxed when I heard someone else say it first.” – FTL Listener Resources Mentioned in This Episode: Beyond Words: Listening to a Hidden Community — Ky Dickens and The Telepathy Tapes - https://jenhatmaker.com/podcasts/series-64/unlocking-the-secrets-of-consciousness-and-telepathy-ky-dickens-and-the-telepathy-tapes/ The Telepathy Tapes podcast - https://thetelepathytapes.com/ Rick Rubin - https://x.com/RickRubin Elizabeth Gilbert - https://www.elizabethgilbert.com/ Human Flourishing in a Distracted World: Theologian Lee C.
