Hi, I'm John Sorensen, President of Evangelism Explosion International, and you're listening to Share Life Today. Over the course of the summer, we will be sharing with you some stories, thoughts, and encouragements from our staff on each continent around the globe. This week, we will be sharing testimonies from North America! I have heard many wary Christians doubt whether anyone is open to the Gospel here in the United States. We have seen Christians at our Equip America events start the day saying, "I'm scared...I don't want to go out." But then at the end, they will be saying something like, "We need to do this every day! Our whole church needs to be a part of this!" Because the truth is, sharing our faith is not as scary as we think it will be, and more people are open to hearing it than we imagine. In fact, we did a study with Lifeway Research that found that sixty-six percent of Americans are open to having a conversation about faith. So let's get started. If you need help in sharing your faith, we're here to help! Visit our website at sharelife.today.
Discipleship doesn't happen by accident—it grows through intentional systems, equipped leaders, and a church culture that values transformation over attendance. As small group and discipleship leaders, we carry the weight of cultivating environments where spiritual growth is possible, but the path toward healthy group ministry can often feel unclear or overwhelming. On today's episode, host Brian Daniel welcomes longtime discipleship strategist Rick Howerton for a deep dive into the evolution and current state of group ministry. Together, they unpack the non-negotiables for a growing, sustainable groups strategy, including the importance of clear systems, visionary leadership, and ongoing training and credentialing for group pastors.Rick shares tried-and-true strategies for launching new groups, strengthening existing ones, and expanding the infrastructure needed to support a growing discipleship movement. He also highlights the distinction between coaching versus managing leaders, and how the right relational investment can unlock exponential growth. The episode concludes with an introduction to Rick's Group Pastor Master Class Cohort, designed to equip leaders with practical tools and seasoned mentorship for long-term ministry impact. If you're looking to grow your groups ministry and multiply disciples with purpose and clarity, this conversation will give you the inspiration—and the blueprint—to do just that. “More of the church is committed to their immigrant neighbours than the media or politicians would like the public to believe.” (Myal Green, from the episode) Myal Greene (president and CEO of World Relief) joins host Mark Labberton to discuss the global humanitarian crises, refugee resettlement, and the church's responsibility to respond with courage and compassion. From Rwanda's post-genocide reconciliation following 1994 to the 2025 dismantling of humanitarian aid and refugee programs in the US, Greene shares how his personal faith journey fuels his leadership amid historic humanitarian upheaval. Rooted in Scripture and the global moral witness of the church, Greene challenges listeners to imagine a more faithful Christian response to suffering—one that refuses to turn away from the world's most vulnerable. Despite the current political polarization and rising fragility of moral consensus, Greene calls on the church to step into its biblical role: speaking truth to power, welcoming the stranger, standing with the oppressed, and embodying the love of Christ in tangible, courageous ways. Episode Highlights “Inherently, reconciliation of people who have done the worst things imaginable to you is not a human thing.” “To truly be a follower of Christ, you can't be completely for a politician or completely for a political party.” “What we've seen is that more of the church is committed to their immigrant neighbours than the media or politicians would like the public to believe.” “The challenge for pastors is: How do I talk about this issue without losing my job or splitting my congregation?” “If we're failing to define our neighbour expansively—as Christ did—we're always going to get it wrong.” Helpful Links and Resources World Relief Open Doors World Watch List 2025 2024 Lifeway Research on Evangelicals & Immigration PEPFAR Program – US Department of State National Association of Evangelicals Rich Christians in an Age of Hunger, by Ron Sider Good News About Injustice, by Gary Haugen Walking with the Poor, by Bryant Myers About Myal Greene Myal Greene has a deep desire to see churches worldwide equipped, empowered, and engaged in meeting the needs of vulnerable families in their communities. In 2021, he became president and CEO after serving for fourteen years with the organization. In a rapidly changing culture, especially in dynamic environments like college towns, discipleship requires more than just a good curriculum, it demands discernment, intentionality, and a deep understanding of the people we serve. As small group leaders and disciple-makers, we must be attuned to our unique ministry contexts and ready to engage with both clarity and compassion. In this episode of Group Answers, host Brian Daniel welcomes Senior Pastor Rob Tims to share his experience leading a local church in Athens, Georgia - a vibrant college town filled with energy, diversity, and complexity. Pastor Rob unpacks the importance of understanding cultural context in ministry and how it shapes the way discipleship is approached. He emphasizes building a shared vision with church leadership, navigating cultural tensions, and clearly articulating church values so that members feel a sense of ownership and belonging. If this episode encouraged or equipped you, please take a moment to rate and review the podcast, and share it with another leader who is seeking to make disciples with wisdom and intentionality.SHOW LINKS: The 4 Disciplines of ExecutionCLICK HERE to read the report from Lifeway Research about the state of groups.

It's Thursday, June 5th, A.D. 2025. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard on 140 radio stations and at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Jonathan Clark and Adam McManus Christian groups in India to speak out against persecution June 9 Christian groups across India are organizing a protest against persecution of Christians on Monday, June 9. The National Christian Front noted, “Our Christian brothers and sisters are enduring brutal attacks and growing intolerance from anti-social elements. This is not merely a Christian issue — it is a grave concern for humanity, for peace, and for the values enshrined in our Constitution.” Christians suffered over 600 incidents of violence and discrimination in India last year. The country is ranked 11th on the Open Doors' World Watch List of most difficult places to be a Christian. U.K. Christian groups calling for prayer on June 11 In the United the Kingdom, Christian groups are calling for a day of prayer on Wednesday, June 11 for protecting human life. This comes as lawmakers are considering bills to legalize assisted suicide. Listen to comments from Ciarán Kelly, director of The Christian Institute. KELLY: “This is a crucial time for our country. So, it's vital that Christians are asking the God, Who made Heaven and Earth, that He would overrule in all these things, to protect vulnerable people from this careless and callous bill.” In 1 Timothy 1:1-2, the Apostle Paul wrote, “I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, for kings and all who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence.” Trump overturns pro-abortion Biden rule In the United States, the Trump administration rescinded a pro-abortion rule on Tuesday that came from the Biden administration. The rule tried to force hospital emergency rooms to offer abortions even if the state restricted them. Matt Bowman, Senior Counsel at Alliance Defending Freedom, said, “Doctors—especially in emergency rooms—are tasked with preserving life. The Trump administration has rolled back a harmful Biden-era mandate that compelled doctors to end unborn lives, in violation of their deeply held beliefs.” Trump raises tariffs on steel imports President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Tuesday to raise tariffs on steel imports. The order doubles tariffs on steel and aluminum coming into the country from 25% to 50%. The levy will affect steel exporters in Canada, Mexico, and many countries in Europe. However, the tariff on steel from the United Kingdom remains at 25% as the U.S. and U.K. work out a trade deal. Dust from Africa's Saharan Desert hits America Over the weekend, a massive plume of dust made its way to Florida all the way from the Saharan Desert in Africa. Such dust plumes are known as the Saharan Air Layer and typically cross the Atlantic each year. The current plume is the biggest one to reach the U.S. so far this season. It measures nearly 2,000 miles wide and 750 miles from north to south. The dust can diminish air quality but also creates spectacular sunrises and sunsets. Only 1 in 100 Evangelical pastors leave ministry annually A report from Lifeway Research found that only 1 out of 100 Evangelical pastors leave the ministry each year. This low rate has remained steady for the last 10 years despite many pastors acknowledging their work is very demanding and even overwhelming. Scott McConnell with Lifeway Research said, “The rate of pastors departing the pastorate is steady and quite low given the demands of the role. Many of those leaving the pastorate feel they are moving at God's direction to another role of ministry.” In 2 Timothy 4:2, the Apostle Paul wrote, “Preach the Word! Be ready in season and out of season. Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching.” The American Miracle movie shows God's intervention in U.S. The Left insists that there's nothing special about America. Inspired by Michael Medved's bestseller, this exciting, entertaining, and edifying motion picture experience was created in anticipation of the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. ‘ Medved appeared on The 700 Club. MEDVED: “America is no accident. All of our most important leaders, from Washington to Lincoln to Woodrow Wilson and Franklin Roosevelt -- all of our leaders have understood that America has a divine purpose.” Consider God's protection of George Washington – the Father of our Country -- in a ferocious battle in 1755 during the French and Indian War. During the Battle of Monongahela, 69 of 70 officers were either killed or wounded. Washington was the only officer who was not shot off his horse. In fact, two horses were shot from underneath him. Yet he lived. Even a Native American chief later said they couldn't touch Washington. Shockingly, after the battle, he found numerous bullet holes in his jacket and bullet fragments in his hair, but he was miraculously unscathed. No wonder they called him “Bulletproof.” Visit the website https://americanmiraclemovie.com/, watch the trailer, click on Tickets, and type in your zipcode to get tickets for next week at a theater near you. In a culture that often prioritizes charisma and credentials, it's easy to forget that biblical leadership is first and foremost a matter of the heart. As leaders, we're not just forming good volunteers or skilled communicators, we're shaping men and women into the image of Christ. What does it look like to lead from character, build relationships that matter, and measure success by spiritual transformation rather than statistics? In this episode, host Brian Daniel sits down with Barnabas Piper, pastor, author, and ministry leader at Emmanuel Church, to explore the kind of leadership that fosters lasting discipleship. Barnabas shares why character must outweigh competence, especially in church leadership, and how relational discipleship sets the foundation for genuine spiritual growth. We're confident you'll walk away with practical insight on training and equipping group leaders, cultivating a thriving church culture, and keeping the focus on what matters most: becoming more like Jesus in the context of authentic community. If this conversation encouraged or challenged you, please take a moment to rate, review, and share the podcast with a fellow leader or small group member. Do you talk with believers that are apathetic towards world missions? Perhaps you're currently discipling someone who can't seem to get out of their comfort zone. If so, today's episode of the Gospel Mobilization Podcast will equip you with practical ideas as you have these difficult conversations. Our host, Dave Jacob, sat down with Scott Hildreth, the associate professor of missiology and associate dean of the ministry preparation area at Southeastern Seminary. A former missionary himself, Scott is working to educate and mobilize the next generation of missionaries. Here's what Dave asked: 1. What is your story of how the Lord “awakened the missionary within you”? 2. In a culture that values exploring the world as an opportunity to see exotic places and experience new things, how do we develop a heart sensitive to the world's vast lostness and need for the gospel? 3. In your book, you write, “Far too many of us live out the words of John Ryland: ‘If God wants to reach them, He can do it without my help.'” Where does this idea come from? What's wrong with it? What does it reveal about us? 4. According to a study from Lifeway Research, more than 2 in 3 U.S. Protestant pastors (67%) believe comfort is an idol that has significant influence on their congregations. How can mobilizers help others overcome this apathy and comfort? 5. Throughout the text you break down the Great Commission and note that it is for all believers. Unpack that a little bit for us. 6. How can mobilizers use this text as a mobilization tool? 7. What do you hope this book does for believers who read it?

In this week's conversation between Dr. James Emery White and co-host Alexis Drye, they discuss a recent Lifeway Research study which found that despite some disturbing trends in the number of church closures across the United States, 94% of pastors believe their church will still be open in 10 years. Whereas in the 1940s nearly 85% of Americans claimed they belonged to a church, now that number is less than 50%. So what happens to these churches when they close? And what is the outcome for pastors as well as those who considered it their church home? Episode Links As Alexis mentioned at the top of the podcast, the decline in Christianity in America has been touched on in more than a handful of past episodes. If you've missed these conversations and would like to go back and listen to them, they include: CCP135: On Women Leaving the Church, CCP105: On Cultural Caricatures of the Christian Faith, CCP100: On Unchristian Christians, CCP94: On the Growing Lack of Confidence in Clergy, CCP32: On a Non-Christian America, and CCP15: On Denominational Decline. If you are interested in looking at more of the data related to the number of church closings forecasted in the U.S. mentioned in today's conversation, as well as what's being done with houses of worship that have already closed, we'd encourage you to check out these two articles: Yonat Shimron, “Study: More churches closing than opening,” Religion News Service Mark Dent, “Can God fix America's housing crisis?" The Hustle They also discussed how when churches close, it can leave a huge void in the wider community being served by the church. Dr. White mentioned a current case gaining attention where Christian pop artist Amy Grant is fighting to save a church that was founded by her grandfather from a local businessman. You can read more about that in the article by Cameron McWhirter in The Wall Street Journal HERE. Finally, Dr. White very poignantly ended today's episode by reading a blog that is published annually at Church & Culture. It's titled “The Monday After Easter,” and is a blog written specifically to pastors who may be struggling with an underwhelming turnout on Easter Sunday despite all of their prayer, faith and efforts. If you'd like to read that blog, you can find it HERE. What happens when the very systems meant to help refugees end up hurting them instead? And what can the Church do to help? In today's episode, Kent Annan and Dr. Jamie Aten talk with Matthew Soerens from World Relief about the real impact of U.S. refugee policies—especially the dramatic changes under the Trump administration. Matt pulls back the curtain on what's happening behind the scenes: families stuck in limbo, staff furloughs at resettlement agencies, and churches stepping in to help. We also talk about how policy decisions can create ripple effects that last for years. It's Thursday, April 24th, A.D. 2025. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard on 125 radio stations and at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Jonathan Clark India Supreme Court heard appeal about anti-conversion laws India's Supreme Court heard an appeal last week against anti-conversion laws in the country. The advocacy group Citizens for Justice and Peace has filed petitions against such laws since 2020. Twelve out of India's 28 states have anti-conversion laws. International Christian Concern warns of a “pattern of abuse by Hindu radical groups, who use the laws to initiate false complaints and pressure law enforcement to act against individual Christians and their communities, often without credible evidence.” U.S. military presence in Syria cut in half The United States is preparing to cut its military presence in Syria by half over the coming months. The U.S. military has about 2,000 troops in the Middle Eastern country. Sean Parnell, the chief spokesman for the Pentagon, said, “Recognizing the success the United States has had against ISIS, including its 2019 territorial defeat under President Trump, today the Secretary of Defense directed the consolidation of U.S. forces in Syria under Combined Joint Task Force.” Trump: 145% tariff on Chinese goods will come down On Tuesday, President Donald Trump said that his 145% tariff on imports from China will likely come down. TRUMP: 145% is very high. It won't be that high. We were talking about fentanyl, where various elements built it up to 145%. No, it won't be anywhere near that high. But it won't be zero. Used to be zero. “We were just destroyed. China was taking us for a ride, and it's not going to happen. We're going to be very good to China. Have a great relationship with President Xi. But they would make billions and billions and billions of dollars a year, and they would build their military out of the United States, and what they made. So that won't happen, but they're going to do very well.” White House spokesman Kush Desai told FOX Business that the U.S. is not looking to unilaterally lower tariffs and that China must a agree to a trade deal. Trump's Task Force to Eradicate Anti-Christian Bias meets On Tuesday, Trump administration officials held the inaugural meeting of the Task Force to Eradicate Anti-Christian Bias in the federal government. Attorney General Pamela Bondi hosted the meeting. BONDI: “As President Trump has stated, the Biden administration engaged in an egregious pattern of targeting peaceful Christians while ignoring violent, anti-Christian offenses. The President is right. “Biden's Department of Justice abused and targeted Christians. Pro-life Christians were arrested and imprisoned for peacefully praying outside abortion clinics. The FBI spied on traditional Catholics in their parishes. President Biden declared Easter Sunday to be Transgender Day of Visibility. No longer.” Romans 13:3 says, “For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to evil. Do you want to be unafraid of the authority? Do what is good, and you will have praise from the same.” 5 million student loan borrowers who stopped paying need to start again The U.S. Department of Education announced Monday that it will resume collections of defaulted federal student loans. The Department has not collected on such loans since 2020. Currently, over 42 million borrowers owe more than $1.6 trillion in student debt. And over five million borrowers have not made a monthly payment in the last three years. Secretary of Education Linda McMahon said, “American taxpayers will no longer be forced to serve as collateral for irresponsible student loan policies.” Notorious abortionist closes Colorado abortion mill The oldest and most notorious abortionist in Colorado announced he is closing his abortion mill. Warren Hern, age 86, opened the Boulder Abortion Clinic in 1975, killing thousands of unborn babies since then. In an interview with Channel 9 in Denver two years ago, Hern described his work of killing babies this way. HERN: “I have always felt this is an extremely important service, and there's never been a time when it's less important.” But you get a fuller appreciation of the mindset of abortionist Hern from a speech he gave via video at a Boulder pro-abortion march on July 9, 2022, just days after Roe v. Wade had been overturned on June 22, 2022. HERN: “The Republican Party is the face of fascism in America. Fox News is the voice of fascism in America. The ideology of this fascism is rooted in the white supremacist, Christian nationalist movement that has taken control of the Republican Party. “Your response to this mortal danger to women and to democracy in America must be to support every Democratic candidate for public office and to defeat every single Republican candidate for public office. Nothing else will do.” Troy Newman with Operation Rescue commented on the closure. He said, “Operation Rescue has some thirty years of history with this clinic – everything from activism on the sidewalk, documenting abortion injuries, filing complaints, and other legal efforts to expose wrongdoing. … We cannot praise God enough for the closure of this monstrous killing center.” Proverbs 10:6-7 says, “Blessings are on the head of the righteous, but violence covers the mouth of the wicked. The memory of the righteous is blessed, but the name of the wicked will rot.” Definition of a regular churchgoer A recent study from Lifeway Research found 53% of U.S. adults consider someone a regular churchgoer if they attend services at least weekly. A previous study found a similar amount of Protestant churchgoers agree. However, only 16% of Protestant pastors say that regular churchgoers attend at least once a week. Scott McConnell, executive director of Lifeway Research, noted, “Pastors … are seeing churchgoers attend less often. But when Americans hear ‘regular churchgoer,' they picture someone attending every week or very close to it.” 18.6 million engaged with YouVersion Bible on Resurrection Sunday And finally, the YouVersion Bible app saw a record 18.6 million people engaging with Scripture on Resurrection Sunday this year. That's up 11% compared to last year. Leading up to Resurrection Sunday, Bible engagement increased by over 20% across Africa, the Middle East, and Central Asia. Bobby Gruenewald, the CEO of YouVersion Bible app, said they're seeing more interest in the Bible on other days too: “many of our record days for engagement have happened on seemingly ordinary days this year, with no specific reason for the spikes -- except that God is on the move.” Close And that's The Worldview on this Thursday, April 24th, in the year of our Lord 2025. In a world overflowing with noise and opinions, how can we, as disciples and leaders, cultivate wisdom, grace, and meaningful conversations? Ruth challenges listeners to embrace intentionality in their spiritual walk, starting with wisdom in speech and a commitment to truth. Discipleship can be both rewarding and challenging, especially in today's ever-changing church landscape. In multi-site churches, these challenges can be even more pronounced, requiring intentional strategies and innovative approaches to ministry. In this episode of Group Answers, we invite you to explore how one church is addressing these very issues. Host Brian Daniel sits down with Matt Vairetta, Executive Pastor of Ministries at Church of the City in Franklin, Tennessee, to discuss how they are combating cultural Christianity, building strong community groups, and equipping leaders in a multi-campus environment. Whether you're leading a small group or overseeing ministry initiatives, this conversation will challenge and encourage you to think differently about discipleship in today's world.SHOW LINKS:Connect with Brian DanielCLICK HERE to read the report from Lifeway Research about the state of groups.

Discipleship isn't just about teaching others about Jesus—it's about living in His presence and helping others do the same. In this episode, Dr. Leonard Sweet joins the conversation to explore the deeper dimensions of discipleship, emphasizing the importance of presencing Jesus rather than merely presenting Him. He unpacks how understanding our humanity through Christ shapes our discipleship efforts in a world that often disconnects faith from daily life. The discussion also highlights the significance of stillness in our spiritual journey—how slowing down and truly abiding in Christ can transform the way we disciple others. Dr. Sweet challenges leaders to move beyond information-driven discipleship and instead cultivate a life that reflects Christ authentically. Whether you're leading a small group or mentoring others one-on-one, this conversation will encourage you to embrace a more relational and transformative approach to discipleship. If this episode encouraged you, take a moment to rate and review the podcast—your support helps others discover these conversations. Members of the community are known as the “untouchables,” representing the lowest stratum of the country's caste system. Officials charged Pastor Jose Pappachan and his wife, Sheeja, with violating the Uttar Pradesh Prohibition of Unlawful Religious Conversion Act. They now face five years in prison and the equivalent of hundreds of dollars in fines. International Christian Concern notes, “Dalits are socially, economically, and historically marginalized communities predominantly in India. Traditionally, the Dalits have easily embraced Christianity to escape the repressive caste system.” Chilean lawmakers commit to oppose abortion Last Tuesday, lawmakers in Chile signed a Commitment for Life document, reports Evangelical Focus. Members of several different parties signed the document in response to the government considering a law to legalize abortion. Parliamentarian Mauro González said, “We are a large majority that defends life, and we will continue to advocate for the ethical, moral and Christian principles that are part of our essence and culture.” Blackhawk helicopter collides with American Airlines jet over Potomac River In the United States, on Wednesday evening around 9:00pm ET, an American Airlines Eagle passenger jet, and an Army Blackhawk helicopter collided and crashed into the Potomac River near Reagan National Airport, reports NBC News. Flight 5342 from Wichita, Kansas had 64 people aboard and the helicopter carried three soldiers. One eyewitness made reference to the American Airlines flight, calling it a CRJ, which means Canadian Regional Jet. Listen. EYEWITNESS: “The accident happened in the river. Both the helicopter and the plane crashed in the river east of the end of runway 33. It was probably out in the middle of the river. I just saw a fireball, and then it was just gone. So, I haven't seen anything since they hit the river. But it was a CRJ [Canadian Regional Jet] and a helicopter that hit, I would say, maybe a half mile off the approach end of [runway] 33.” At least four people have been recovered and were rushed to hospitals. A frantic search to find crash victims in the river was underway within minutes. Last night, the temperature of the Potomac River was 35 degrees Fahrenheit. At 35 degrees, the human body core temperature quickly drops and exhaustion, hypothermia, and unconsciousness can occur in as little as 15 to 30 minutes. At 9:15pm, Reagan Airport announced, “All takeoffs and landings have been halted.” Trump ensures gov't won't fund transgender surgeries for kids In the United States, President Donald Trump issued an executive order on Tuesday entitled, “Protecting Children from Chemical and Surgical Mutilation.” The order keeps the federal government from funding transgender drugs and surgeries for people under the age of 19. The order states, “Across the country today, medical professionals are maiming and sterilizing a growing number of impressionable children under the radical and false claim that adults can change a child's sex through a series of irreversible medical interventions. This dangerous trend will be a stain on our Nation's history, and it must end.” In Mark 10:6, Jesus said, “But from the beginning of the creation, God ‘made them male and female.'" Trump made comments via remote video from Washington, D.C. In one comment, he rebuked major financial institutions for “debanking” conservatives and faith groups. Trump specifically called out Bank of America CEO Brian Moynihan and JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon. TRUMP: “I hope you start opening your bank to conservatives because many conservatives complain that the banks are not allowing them to do business within the bank, and that included a place called Bank of America. They don't take conservative business. I don't know if the regulators mandated that because of Biden or what. But you and Jamie and everybody, I hope you're going to open your banks to conservatives, because what you're doing is wrong.” After several awkward seconds, Brian Moynihan, the CEO of Bank of America, offered the king of all non sequiturs, failing to address Trump's direct concern at all. MOYNIHAN: “Mr. President, I'll say that your friend Gianni [Infantino] said hello, told me to tell you hello, and we look forward to sponsoring the World Cup when it comes both this summer for the club and next year. So, thank you for getting that for the United States.” A prominent example of such “debanking” was Chase Bank's decision to close the account of The National Committee for Religious Freedom in 2022. Trump looks to cut $100 billion through federal workforce The Trump administration is offering buyouts to federal workers to shrink the size of the government. Ahead of planned downsizing, the administration is offering federal employees to voluntarily resign by February 6. They would still receive pay through September. The administration expects 5-10% of the federal workforce to quit. This would save around $100 billion. American kids less competent in reading The National Center for Education Statistics released their latest report card for the U.S. American kids are still growing less competent in their reading skills and have made little progress in math. This continues the decline of academic results since school closures during the COVID-19 pandemic. The report also highlights a growing divide between higher- and lower-performing students with the gap being wider than ever. Nondenominational churches increasing and growing And finally, most U.S. denominations are experiencing decline, but nondenominational Protestant churches are on the rise. Nearly 35% of American Protestants identified as nondenominational in 2022, up from less than 3% in the early 1970s. Also, the number of nondenominational churches increased by nearly 9,000 over the last decade. This growth comes despite the number of practicing Christians being on the decline in the U.S. Professor Ed Stetzer, the former head of Lifeway Research group told The Washington Times, “The percentage of practicing Christians is declining, but those who remain tend to create a more serious expression of their faith. . . . Millennials and Gen Z Christians, in particular, are showing signs of greater commitment, even as they navigate a cultural landscape where being religious sometimes comes with a price.” In Matthew 16:24, Jesus said, “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me.” Close And that's The Worldview on this Thursday, January 30th, in the year of our Lord 2025. Filling in for Adam McManus, I'm Ean Leppin. Texas Schools Removing the Bible from Libraries The head of a Texas school district says the Bible had to be removed from school libraries because of a new state law prohibiting explicit books. The Christian Post reports that Canyon Independent School District Superintendent Darryle Flusche announced in an email earlier this week that, under House Bill 900, which was passed by the Texas Legislature in 2023, parts of the Holy Bible are deemed unsuitable. House Bill 900 was passed for the purpose of protecting schools from sexually explicit or vulgar content. In an email to parents, Flusche stated the full text of the Bible had been removed because it was categorized under this mandate, even though portions of the Bible will remain available. He went on to say that “through strong connections with local churches they would be happy to donate a Bible upon request.” House Bill 900 defines sexually explicit material as “any communication, language or material that describes or depicts sexual conduct in a manner that is patently offensive under the Texas Penal Code.” Proverbs 30:5 – “Every word of God proves true; He is a shield to those who take refuge in Him.” Matthew 24:35 –Jesus said, “‘Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.'” TikTok Potential Ban in the US WNG.org reports that in a brief, two-page order, the high court on Wednesday agreed to hear TikTok's challenge to a federal law that could ban the social media and video-sharing platform in the United States. The Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act would implement a ban on January 19 unless China-based ByteDance, TikTok's parent company, sells TikTok's US operations. President Joe Biden signed the bill into law in April. The court scheduled oral arguments for Friday, January 10, nine days before the ban would take effect. Attorneys representing TikTok and U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland will have two hours to argue whether the legislation, as it applies to TikTok and ByteDance, violates the First Amendment. The Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act received bipartisan support from lawmakers. Supporters of the law cite concerns that TikTok's overwhelming popularity and Chinese ownership create security and censorship issues. Proponents of the law are also concerned about China using the app to collect sensitive data on American users. Meanwhile, ByteDance argues that the law is unconstitutional and illegally singles out TikTok for legislative punishment, violating equal protection and due process principles. ByteDance also says the law violates the Constitution's Fifth-Amendment protections against uncompensated property seizure. Church Attendance During the Christmas Season Is Half and Half A Lifeway Research study finds US adults are split on whether they'll be at church sometime this Christmas season – 47 percent say they typically attend church at Christmastime, while 48 percent say they do not, and 5 percent aren't sure. Scott McConnell, executive director of Lifeway Research says, “The very name Christmas originates in the church's celebration of Jesus Christ's birth. In the mid-14th century, the words ‘Christ's Mass' were first merged as a single term for this celebration. While nine in ten Americans do something to celebrate Christmas, less than half typically attend church at Christmastime today.” Although that number is discouraging, the study goes on to show that many don't attend simply because they have not been invited. Fifty-six percent say they would likely attend church if someone they know invited them to attend at Christmastime. Hebrews 10:24-25 – “And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.” Missouri Man Found in Syria After Missing for 7 Months And good news for a family in Missouri! American citizen Travis Timmerman has been found in Syria after being unexpectedly detained for seven months while making a pilgrimage in an effort to deepen his Christian faith. Timmerman, a Missouri native, had been missing since June before resurfacing in a Damascus suburb. Timmerman was held in the notorious Sednaya prison, where the Syrian regime of President Bashar al-Assad has arbitrarily detained tens of thousands. He was released as rebels overthrew the Assad regime this month. He told reporters that he crossed mountains into Syria from Lebanon because he was on a religious pilgrimage influenced by his intensive Bible reading and desire to deepen his understanding of Christianity. His entry into Syria from Lebanon by foot, however, led to his arrest and subsequent imprisonment for several months. His detainment came to light only recently after Syrian rebel forces ousted Assad and the chaotic prison releases that followed. CBS News talked to Timmerman's sister Pixie Rogers, who says it's an amazing Christmas gift! ROGERS: “This is a whole, huge Christmas present that we all get to hear. I told my mom this morning, I was like, ‘It's a Christmas miracle!' I know she is very, very ecstatic [and joyous], overwhelmed, and just beyond super excited. I probably will cry and just tear up, and just—I just, I can't wait for that day.” US officials, told the media that Timmerman had been transferred to Jordan following his release and was currently under the care of State Department officials, according to Reuters. He was initially handed over to US troops at Tanf garrison near the tri-border area of Syria, Iraq, and Jordan before being flown out via US military helicopter. During his captivity, Timmerman was isolated but not mistreated, but he could hear the sounds of other prisoners being tortured nearby. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Jonathan Clark Nigerian Muslims killed 48 Christians Fulani Muslim herdsmen killed 48 Christians in central Nigeria during Thanksgiving week this year. In one attack, gunmen killed 18 Christians, including women and children, who were on their way to church. Benjamin Uzenda, former member of the Logo Local Government Council, told Morning Star News, “The Fulani herdsmen, armed with deadly weapons, shot sporadically on the Christians, butchered some victims with machetes, and destroyed their crops on farmlands.” Nigeria is the deadliest country in the world for Christians. Psalm 116:15 says, “Precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of His saints.” Notre Dame Cathedral rebuilt in 5 years after fire Five years after a fire burned down the Notre Dame cathedral in Paris, the building has been restored. After spending $845 million on construction, the cathedral opened its doors last weekend. (audio of music from the ceremony) The ceremony was attended by French President Emmanuel Macron, Prince William of England, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, First Lady Jill Biden, and U.S. President-elect Donald Trump. Initial construction for the Notre Dame Cathedral began in AD 1163. Watch the 7-minute “CBS Sunday Morning” story. Americans rank Biden last in most recent 9 presidents A recent UK DailyMail and J.L. Partners random survey of U.S. registered voters found President Joe Biden ranked dead last among the most recent nine U.S. presidents. Remarkably, Biden's unfavorable rating beat out President Richard Nixon who resigned in shame after the Watergate scandal in 1974. However, Donald Trump was rated third worst president, indicating the harsh political divide characterizing the nation today. Ronald Reagan still ranks the best president, with the most favorable ratings. New York middle school reluctantly approved student-led Bible Club A New York middle school finally approved a student-led Bible Club this week. Thirteen-year-old Elijah Nelson tried to start the club last school year. He's the son of a pastor and told National Review, “Every Sunday I've gone to church, and I've thought more people should hear what is said in the Bible.” However, Waterville Central School District denied the request for a Bible Club, saying it was “unconstitutional.” Attorneys with First Liberty Institute sent a letter to the school, stating, “By denying the same benefits to the Bible club that it provides to all non-curricular clubs, the school has missed the concept of 'equal' in the Equal Access Act. The school's actions are unconstitutional, and its justification is legally flawed. The Supreme Court has made clear that the Free Exercise Clause protects religious practices by both students and employees in public school settings.” 29 abortion mills closed or stopped surgical abortions in 2024 Operation Rescue reports 29 abortion mills closed or halted abortions in the U.S. this year. Accounting for mills that opened or resumed abortions, the overall number of abortion locations decreased from 670 last year to 667 this year. While it's a small decrease, it's still significantly down from the 2,176 abortion mills in 1991. Operation Rescue President Troy Newman said, “There is no doubt that abortion facilities are struggling to survive in this post-Roe environment. As we conduct our extensive investigations, we continue to see evidence that abortion clinics are facing challenges hiring and keeping abortionists.” 47% of Americans attend church in December around Christmas And finally, Lifeway Research reports Americans are split on church attendance at Christmas. Forty-seven percent of U.S. adults say they typically attend church at Christmas time, while 48% say they do not typically attend. Scott McConnell, executive director of Lifeway Research, noted, “While church services draw more people in the Christmas season, their prime motivation isn't unified. The majority are drawn to celebrate the birth of Jesus, honoring Him as the Christ or promised Messiah. But others mostly join in because of the importance of family, their embrace of Christmas church tradition or to jumpstart Christmas vibes.” In John 4:23-24, Jesus reminds us, “The true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him. God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.” Close And that's The Worldview on this Wednesday, December 11th, in the year of our Lord 2024. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Jonathan Clark 673 incidents of persecution of Christians in India Christians face daily persecution in 23 of India's 28 states. Such persecution includes physical violence, murder, threats, damage to property, and disruption of prayer services. A.C. Michael with United Christian Forum said, “In 2023, we recorded about 750 incidents, which means two Christians were attacked every day in our country. These are organized acts of violence by pro-Hindu groups targeting Christian faiths.” The organization's latest report documented 673 incidents of violence and discrimination this year between January and October. India is ranked 11th on the Open Doors' World Watch List of nations where it is most difficult to be a Christian. Ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah Israel agreed to a ceasefire with Hezbollah militants in Lebanon that went into effect yesterday. This brings a two-month pause to 14 months of fighting between to the two sides in southern Lebanon. The United States and France brokered the agreement. The incoming administration of President-elect Donald Trump claimed credit for the deal. Florida Rep. Mike Waltz is Trump's pick for national security adviser. He posted on X, “Everyone is coming to the table because of President Trump. His resounding victory sent a clear message to the rest of the world that chaos won't be tolerated. I'm glad to see concrete steps towards de-escalation in the Middle East.” China released three detained American citizens Speaking of coming to the table, China released three American citizens it had detained for years. The White House announced the prisoner swap yesterday. The three Americans are Mark Swidan, Kai Li, and John Leung. The United States had designated them as wrongfully detained. This comes just months after China released David Lin, a Christian pastor from California, who was detained for 20 years in China. Judged halted sentencing of 7 pro-life activists Last Tuesday, a federal judge in Michigan halted the sentencing of seven pro-life activists. The pro-lifers were convicted under the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances Act. Some faced over 10 years in prison for protesting at abortion mills. Judge Matthew Leitman delayed proceedings until after Donald Trump takes office. Trump has already promised to review the cases of those “unjustly victimized by the Biden regime” and get them “back to their families where they belong.” Supreme Court takes up Tennessee transgender case The U.S. Supreme Court will hear arguments in a major transgender case next Wednesday. The case involves a Tennessee law that protects children from transgender drugs and procedures intended to enable children to pretend to be the opposite sex. Tennessee House of Representatives Majority Leader William Lamberth co-sponsored the measure. He told Reuters, “This case is about protecting vulnerable young people who are experiencing gender dysphoria or other mental health crises from making the biggest mistake of their lives.” You can sign a prayer commitment for the case through Alliance Defending Freedom which is linked in today's transcript at TheWorldview.com. U.S. economy grew 2.8% The U.S. economy grew by 2.8% on an annual basis during the third quarter of this year. The Gross Domestic Product is slightly down from 3% during the second quarter. However, the U.S. has seen growth of over 2% for eight out of the last nine quarters. Consumer spending, along with an increase in exports, contributed the latest economic growth. America's history of Thanksgiving The first official National Proclamation of Thanksgiving in America was issued by the Continental Congress on November 1, 1777, in celebration of the victory against the British at the Battle of Saratoga. In 1941, as America confronted a world at war, Congress voted to establish Thanksgiving as a national holiday. In his first Thanksgiving proclamation, President Ronald Reagan wrote: “America has much for which to be thankful. The unequaled freedom enjoyed by our citizens has provided a harvest of plenty to this Nation throughout its history. In keeping with America's heritage, one day each year is set aside for giving thanks to God for all of His blessings. … “Searching our hearts, we should ask what we can do as individuals to demonstrate our gratitude to God for all He has done. Such reflection can only add to the significance of this precious day of remembrance. “Let us recommit ourselves to that devotion to God and family that has played such an important role in making this a great Nation, and which will be needed as a source of strength if we are to remain a great people.” Most popular Thanksgiving verses And finally, Lifeway Research shared the most popular Bible verses during Thanksgiving based on analysis from YouVersion's Bible app. Verses from the Psalms were among the most popular verses in recent years. Lifeway shared 11 verses that appeared on the list of most popular verses at Thanksgiving at least twice during the last five years. Here are the top three: Numbers 6:24-26 says, “May the Lord bless you and protect you; may the Lord make His face shine on you and be gracious to you; may the Lord look with favor on you and give you peace.” 1 Chronicles 16:34 says, “Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good; His faithful love endures forever.” Psalm 100:4-5 says, “Enter His gates with thanksgiving and His courts with praise. Give thanks to Him and bless His name. For the Lord is good, and His faithful love endures forever; His faithfulness, through all generations.” Close And that's The Worldview on this Thanksgiving, Thursday, November 28th, in the year of our Lord 2024.
