Pioneers were prevalent in the 50s and 60s. Guys that built up their chops to be able to play at the spur of the moment in any setting with any players. This pioneer mentality was helped by venues, multiple venues in every major city so accessibility was not a problem. The pioneers of music were unafraid of pursuing odd rhythms and combining instruments that wouldn't necessarily be commonplace in a square setting. My guest was one such pioneer, with Charles Lloyd they became the first American Jazz outfit to perform in the Soviet Union, he was a favorite of Joe Henderson in a group that featured the likes of Woody Shaw, George Cables and Lenny White. He was also one of the founding members of the eclectic group the fourth way with Mike Nock, Michael White and legendary Bay Area drummer Eddie Marshall. He has been an educator at the Berkelee School of music and LIU and is a continual force in the field of music. Ron McClure it's a pleasure to welcome you to the Jake Feinberg Show.

A student of J Dilla, James Brown, Gospel traditions and all points between, Nikki Glaspie toured the world as the drummer of Beyonce's backing band SUGA MAMA, and has trotted the globe behind Maceo Parker, Ivan Neville's Dumpstaphunk, Me'Shell N'dege Ocello, and more. Nikki is a living legend, well before her fortieth birthday. An in-demand session player, super-jam superhero, singer and spiritual guide, Glaspie is at once down-to-earth and larger-than-life. She and her brethren in The Nth Power are poised for even higher heights, one soul survived at a time. Glaspie has played behind and alongside musical luminaries amid an array of genres, cities and scenes. Album: Herbie Hancock: Thrust (1974)   Thrust followed on the heels of Herbie Hancock’s genre-altering best-seller Head Hunters album, one in which the gifted keyboardist and composer played with new conceptions of fusion jazz and synthesizer technology. Thrust, in many ways, could be considered a second half to Head Hunters; recorded within months of its predecessors with almost all the same players. Once again, Hancock and his team plumbed the possibilities of mixing funk rhythms with jazz improvisation, resulting in four tracks of fusion fire that, to our guest Jason Concepcion, marked a high point before a onslaught of “smooth jazz” would dial everything down.    Concepcion is perhaps best known to people as a basketball savant as a staff writer for The Ringer and Emmy-winning producer behind their NBA Desktop segment. I first discovered him via Twitter, thanks to his expert, witty writing as @netw3rk. However, for all his sports acumen, Concepcion is also Berkelee School-trained, having once attended there with the ambition of going into film composition. Thrust was a revelatory way in which he engaged with the possibilities of jazz, soul and funk experimentations. During our conversation, we discussed Hancock’s penchant for innovation in that era, the highs and lows of 1970s fusion jazz plus we took a side trip into the current state of the 365 day NBA “season.”   More on Jason Concepcion Ringer archive Jason on what Whiplash got right and wrong about music school (Grantland) Twitter | Instagram More on Thrust Album liner notes collection LP review (Sputnik Music) Show Tracklisting (all songs from Thrust unless indicated otherwise): Palm Grease Spank-A-Lee Butterfly Actual Proof Van Halen: Cathedral Spank-A-Lee Palm Grease Herbie Hancock: Watermelon Man Herbie Hancock: Rockit Palm Grease Weather Report: Young and Fine Rusty Bryant: Fire Eater Grover Washington Jr.: Hydra Actual Proof Rhodes Piano Demo Actual Proof Butterfly toe: two moons Palm Grease Gil Scott Heron & Brian Jackson: Peace Go With You Brother Herbie Hancock: Chameleon Here is the Spotify playlist of as many songs as we can find there. David Luning is in the house! David’s band mates joined him in the studio for their latest cd “Restless” The Rink Studios (TRS) for us, with Ben Dubin on bass, Linden Reed on drums and Dave Sampson on guitar, and they’re a great bunch of guys. They sat down with me at my home base in Sacramento TRS and performed a four-song set from “Restless” in front of a live audience; and we didn’t want it end. ‘Restless” was produced and engineered by Karl Derfler. His credits include Tom Waits, Dave Matthews, Mother Hips, Smash Mouth and Live among many others. David has a lot of experience and miles under his feet in a relatively short amount of time. He attended Berkelee School of Music, he’s almost always constantly touring, and he’s an American Idol contestant. Keith Urban told him he had ”staunch originality, no one’s doing what you do…good singer songwriter, story-telling guy” and Jennifer Lopez commented on his performance saying “I love it. He has a really, really beautiful tone.” David writes, records and performs all of his own songs and he’ll talk about his process. He’ll also talk about the music industry as it is now and how it’s a double-edged sword. Luning is preparing to release his most dynamic and gripping collection to date, 'Restless,' and he can trace it all back to one fateful night that changed everything. His self- released debut album, 'Just Drop On By,' garnered acclaim from both critics and fellow musicians alike, with country megastar Keith Urban hailing Luning's "staunch originality." Songs from the album landed numerous film and TV placements, most recently on NBC's 'Grimm,' and Luning's reputation for exhilarating live performances earned him dates with luminaries like Jackie Greene, Dave and Phil Alvin, and Elvin Bishop, along with a slew of festival performances up and down the West Coast. Rebellious troubadour” as called by Rolling Stone, David Luning is celebrated for his compelling, dynamic live performances sharing the stage with Tedeschi Trucks, Chris Issak, Robert Earl Keen, Jay Leno, Son Volt, Jackie Greene among others. Luning’s sophmore album, 'Restless', showcases a collection of songs that explores themes of love, acceptance, and real life with a heartfelt universality. The Alternate Root hails, “He has set the bar high with thoughtful and unique styling, well-crafted lyrics and versatile vocals."
