Joe Segal, who would have turned 100 on April 24, recorded 8- to-10,000 shows at his own Jazz Showcase and other Chicago clubs. In 2011, “Jazz Detective” Zev Feldman began visiting Segal and exploring his vast archive. Joe Segal died in 2020, but Feldman continued to work with Segal's son, current Jazz Showcase owner Wayne Segal, and on Record Store Day, live-at-the-Jazz-Showcase albums were released from Joe Henderson, Ahmad Jamal, Yusef Lateef and Mal Waldron, plus an earlier Segal-recorded performance from Terry Callier. Feldman here describes the archive, the tapes' condition (reel-to-reel? cassettes?), the recordings' quality and why a digital step was used to prepare them for release. He also discusses why these performances were chosen for release first and what else is in store. And he tells how he wound up with 11 Record Store Day releases this year, including acclaimed ones by Freddie King and Buster Williams. (Photo by Zak Shelby-Szyszko)

Ravi Coltrane with Marcus MillerMarcus Miller interviews Ravi Coltrane about his musical evolution and the dual legacy of his parents, Alice and John Coltrane. This insightful and candid talk, recorded live on the Journey of Jazz cruise, covers the challenges of growing up under the shadow of a jazz icon and finding one's own voice through the music.Key TakeawaysThe episode is a conversation between host Marcus Miller and guest Ravi Coltrane, focusing on Ravi's development as a jazz saxophonist.Ravi's father, John Coltrane, passed away in 1967 when Ravi was 2 years old, leaving Ravi to be raised by his mother, Alice Coltrane. Ravi notes that his father's instruments are currently in his stateroom.Ravi began his musical journey playing the clarinet throughout junior high and high school. He switched to the soprano saxophone at age 16 after his mother gave it to him for his birthday as a hint, later moving to the tenor saxophone.Ravi did not initially feel pressure from his famous last name because, during the 1970s in the San Fernando Valley where he grew up, John Coltrane was still considered "underground" or "counter culture".The death of Ravi's older brother, John Jr., in an automobile accident when Ravi was 17, caused a "void" that Ravi later filled by studying his father's music. Ravi began listening to his father's records to gain answers for questions asked at parties, and through this, the music "hit" him.Ravi worked with key members of the John Coltrane Quartet, including joining drummer Elvin Jones's band in 1991 (though he felt he was "prematurely" ready) and later working with pianist McCoy Tyner in the 2000s.Ravi and Marcus discuss the meaning of being "ready" to perform at a high level, noting that it means being "prepared to do the job properly" and recognizing that evolution and learning are continuous processes.Host and Guest InfoHost: Lee Mergner (introduction), Marcus Miller (interview).Guest: Ravi Coltrane. This talk was recorded during the Journey of Jazz cruise. Marcus Miller provided the theme music, which is a clip from his song "High Life" on his album Aphrodesia on Blue Note. The talk was captured by Brian Ratchkco and his production team.Send us a text

Trumpeter / composer Kenny Dorham (born August 30, 1924) is hardly a household name, but one would be hard pressed to name a musician held in as high regard by other jazz musicians. He played at a consistently high level throughout a career that included stints with Charlie Parker, Max Roach, Art Blakey, Joe Henderson to name just a few, and myriad excellent recordings under his own name.
For the first time ever, we're digging into an album Peter actually played on. In this episode, we go deep on Spirit of the Moment, saxophonist Joshua Redman's 1995 double-CD live album, recorded at the legendary Village Vanguard, with Peter on piano, drummer Brian Blade, and bassist Chris Thomas. We explore how Redman rose to stardom in the '90s, stories from Peter's New Orleans trio days, and what it's like to be onstage for a now-classic recording. Plus: crowd gasps, Josh's nods to Sonny Rollins, Joe Henderson and his father Dewey Redman, the art of laying out, and why this record still inspires a specific crowd of 17-year old jazz pianists 30 years later.
Zev Feldman, a.k.a. the “Jazz Detective,” has turned his crate-digging passion into a career: He tracks down previously unreleased recordings and jumps through the necessary hoops to get them released, often in lavish packages for his label, Resonance Records. This past Record Store Day featured such Feldman finds as live albums from Bill Evans, Freddie Hubbard, Kenny Dorham and Charles Mingus plus a limited-edition double album of previously unreleased Patsy Cline performances, Imagine That: The Lost Recordings (1954-1963). Feldman also co-produced last year's incendiary Blue Note release from McToy Tyner and Joe Henderson, Forces of Nature: Live at Slugs. In this expansive conversation, Feldman tells his Jazz Detective origin story and describes how he finds these recordings (or vice versa), he gets specific about the importance of Record Store Day and these projects' tight margins, and he reveals his white whales. Tonight's Jazz Feature is a fine album that never saw the light of day until the early 80's despite being recorded in August 1963. It was the first album by trumpeter Richard "Blue" Mitchell for Blue Note Records. It was given a catalogue number and advertised in the Blue Note brochure but never released. It's a fine date with Blue on trumpet, Joe Henderson on tenor saxophone. Joe also did most of the arrangements on this date as well. Leo Wright is here on alto saxophone, Herbie Hancock is on piano, Gene Taylor on bass and Roy Brooks is on drums. Two standards and four original tunes make up this fine date. It simply got lost in the shuffle but finally was issued after research into the Blue Note files. It's a fine and enjoyable date with some solid playing by all. Enjoy "Step Lightly" as tonight's Jazz Feature.
Jay recently discovered a summer program offered by McDaniel College called Common Ground on the Hill. Created in 1994 by Walt Michael, the program provides the opportunity to teach and study various musical instruments and art forms across various ethnic and cultural traditions. This year features world renowned banjo player Tony Trischka, a particular favorite of Jay's. (S4 Ep18) The Real McCoy (Blue Note) with guest Steve Myerson October 1967, Recorded April 21, 1967 The Real McCoy (1967) is a landmark album by jazz pianist McCoy Tyner, marking his first solo release after leaving John Coltrane's legendary quartet. With a stellar lineup featuring tenor saxophonist Joe Henderson, bassist Ron Carter, and drummer Elvin Jones, the album showcases Tyner's unique modal jazz style, blending African rhythmic influences and his signature wide interval voicings. The album's compositions, all written by Tyner wrote, demonstrate his incredible range as a pianist and composer, with tracks like "Passion Dance" and "Contemplation" now regarded as jazz standards. The interplay between the musicians is dynamic, with Henderson's fluid solos, Carter's solid bass work, and Jones's explosive drumming providing a perfect backdrop for Tyner's improvisations. The album balances uptempo tracks, like "Four by Five," with slower, more meditative pieces, such as "Search for Peace," highlighting Tyner's ability to navigate diverse moods and textures. The Real McCoy is widely praised for its deep emotional resonance and technical brilliance, solidifying McCoy Tyner as one of his generation's most influential jazz pianists.Signature Tracks: "Passion Dance", "Contemplation", "Four By Five" Full Album YouTube Spotify Playlist YouTube Spotify

The legendary jazz musician Roy Ayers passed away earlier this year. Born in Los Angeles, California in 1940, Ayers is widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in jazz, funk, and soul music. Ayers released over 30 albums and performed with iconic jazz musicians including including Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter, Joe Henderson and many more. During his early career, Ayers worked extensively with Indiana musicians, including the Fort Wayne pianist Jack Wilson and the Indianapolis bassists Leroy Vinnegar and Monk Montgomery. On this episode, listen to music featuring Ayers' work with Naptown musicians.
Jazz88's Peter Solomon spoke with pianist Renee Rosnes, who has been a major player on the New York Jazz Scene since 1985. She discusses her early career when she worked with iconic artists like Joe Henderson, J.J. Johnson, and Bobby Hutcherson. She also discusses her recent Brazilian album "Crossing Paths," and the new Blue Note album "Arboresque," by the all-female jazz ensemble Artemis, which Rosnes founded. (Pictured: Members of Artemis. Rosnes is second from the left. Photo by John Abbott).
Renee Rosnes has traced a momentous musical trajectory over the last 40 years. A pianist and composer of exceptional insight, she’s served apprenticeships with Joe Henderson, Wayne Shorter and Ron Carter, and earned rare stature among her peers. Almost a decade ago, she formed Artemis, an all-women cohort that just released its third album, Arboresque. Rosnes also has a new solo release, Crossing Paths — her first full-length album of Brazilian music, a longtime source of inspiration. (She enlisted two certified legends, Edu Lobo and Joyce Moreno, for the project.) In this conversation, Rosnes opens up about all of the above, as well as the “concrete ceiling” that female instrumentalists are forced to contend with, even now.
