A very special guest many moons in the making, please welcome dear friend and fearless leader PAUL LEVINE of Hulaween, Purple Hat Productions, co-founder of Bear Creek and Purple Hatters Ball, Suwannee Resonate, and all-around ambassador of Spirit of Suwannee Music Park. Paul is a major force of nature in our little sliver of the musical universe, responsible for so many epic endeavors over the years. On the occasion of the 10th Hulaween, Paul the Wolf finally slides through the pod to discuss the joys, journey, success, teammates, peaks, valleys, tragedy, community, and the Spirit of Suwannee dream. After our conversation, BG runs thru the Hula 2023 schedule and gives you a handful of can't miss picks. Episode 071 begins with your host's lengthy, personal eulogy/tribute to the late, great James Casey, who passed away August 28th at the age of 40 from colorectal cancer. 3:30 - a word from our sponsor iamavl 6:30 - The Upful Update 11:15 - Remembering JAMES CASEY 28:15 - introducing Paul Levine & a love letter to Spirit of Suwannee 39:45 - interview w/ PAUL LEVINE (73 mins) 1:52:45 - B.Getz's Hulaween 2023 Picks 2:17:45 - Vibe Junkie JAM Please check out our sponsor IAMAVL   James Casey was a longtime saxophonist/vocalist with Trey Anastasio Band, he logged time with Lettuce before that, founded hybrid electronic squad Animus Rexx, performed in various ensembles with The Nth Power, and sat in with countless bands and artists across genre and geography. A certified musical genius, he was a personal friend to me and so many others in the jam diaspora. Offstage, James Casey was somebody I admired for the way he moved through life: determined, ambitious, graceful, loving. From when we met in 2011 til our last interaction, he was always very kind to me. I wanted to say a few words about the man while the wound is still fresh. Rest easy, James Casey. Paul Levine interview: After recognizing the ingenuity, resiliency, and longevity of HULA, naturally Paul and BG hop in the wayback machine for treasured memories of Bear Creek, the long-defunct, bitter-cold, beloved funk olympics hosted in those same spiritualized woods on the banks of the Suwannee River. From there, we love on Lettuce for a good long while, as Levine was instrumental in the band's SE regional come-up, Bear Creek was LETT HQ for seven glorious years, and he remains a major ally and asset to the squad. Paul offers poignant recollections of Rachel Morningstar Hoffman, revisits Purple Hatters Ball, talks Mama Margie, plus music and community as medicine in the wake of tragedy and grief.   Thank you Paul, for EVERYTHING. This episode of Across The Margin : The Podcast presents an interview with prolific percussionist, vibraphonist, bandleader, and vocalist Mike Dillon. How many artists have been praised as a “punk rock provocateur,” “jazz vibraphone visionary,” and “percussion virtuoso”? There's only one: Mike Dillon. Whether through his affiliation with artists like Les Claypool of Primus, Rickie Lee Jones, Dean Ween Group, and Ani Difranco, and collaborations such as Nolatet, Garage a Trois, The Dead Kenny G's, Critters Buggin, or bands he has led, including Mike Dillon Band, Mike Dillon's New Orleans Punk Rock Percussion Consortium, Billy Goat, and Hairy Apes BMX, the Texas-native has set his own standard for three decades now. Over the past decade, Mike Dillon has released a number of acclaimed albums, intertwining a range of influences from Zappa-esque eccentricity to Fishbone punk funk, D.C. Go-Go to Milt Jackson-influenced vibraphone majesty. His latest project, a trio that goes by the name Punkadelick, features Brian Haas (Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey) on Fender Rhodes, piano, bass Moog and melodica, and Nikki Glaspie (Beyonce, Nth Power) on drums, cymbals, and vocals. Punkadelick's latest album, Inflorescence, is an expansive 10-track collection, focused and fearless, representing a world where Duke Ellington and Augustus Pablo rub shoulders with crate-digger exotica, the freak-funk of Parliament, and the 'anything fits' outsider ethos of acid-fried punks like The Meat Puppets. In this episode host Michael Shields and Mike Dillon discuss the genesis of Punkadelick and what it's like creating music with phenomenal talents such as Brian Haas and Nikki Glaspie. They discuss the botanical influence behind the album's title, life on the road amid their current tour, the forthcoming tour with Les Claypool and The Fearless Flying Frog Brigade, and so much more. Heaping slabs of musicology with a healthy serving of humanity. Nate Dawg doesn't do very many interviews - certainly not lengthy, super-personal purges - so this ep is a real treat, and an emotional sledgehammer. Boston/Wally's/NE jam scene back in the day, learning tuba to get into college, and other random historical minutiae. In a touching, insightful segment, Nate takes us through his experience working with pioneering American reggae band John Brown's Body, and expounds on the legacy of his dear friend, JBB bassist, the late Scott Palmer.  Naturally, we dig DEEP on all things The Nth Power, past, present and future. Ruminations on his bandmates as family, the core trio perservering through adversity, the inherent spirituality in their music. Plus reflections on collaborating with Weedie Braimah, Nigel Hall, Rob Marscher, and the friendship, mentorship, kindness and unbelievable talent of the late, great Kofi Burbridge. We unpack Nth's unparalleled tribute mojo: from Earth, Wind & Power to Bob Marley to Steely Dan, High Sierra's Gospel According to Nth, and a little teaser for Cool Cool Cool just around the bend at Brooklyn Comes Alive.  MY MAN NATE. Simple daily interactions that provoke strong emotional reactions can be intimidating. It is, quite frankly, EASY to blame another person's actions or attitudes, for there is certainly lack of awareness in the world around us - and INSIDE of us too. In the realm of personal responsibility, there is, however, an education from the seeking within, one where the learning is always about YOU. So when an interaction derails an otherwise good day and you don't understand why - why your reaction was so strong, or why you had one at all - taking a deeper look by asking pertinent self-examination questions is key to your growth. Think about it...most of us are just trying to live and connect. We don't understand that a lack of connection doesn't come from without, it comes from within. It is a sense of lack, intolerance and limiting beliefs. We all have them. The road to power is about finding them and using spiritual, mental and emotional tools to explore, demystify and mitigate their hold on you. NO one is saying don't feel your feelings. At From the Nth Power, we're simply aiming for something better than that - POWER that's about more of you than those feelings.

Braimah, who was born in Ghana and raised in East St. Louis, is the product of a family whose musical history goes back centuries. His father, Oscar Sulley Braimah, was a master drummer and composer whose Uhuru Dance Band made remarkable records that bridged the gap between jazz and traditional African music. Braimah's mother, Ann Morris was a gifted jazz drummer, and his great-uncle Idris Muhammad played with everyone from Grant Green and Horace Silver to Pharoah Sanders and Roberta Flack, while also leading his own ensembles. Braimah has been making music with The Nth Power, Trombone Shorty & Orleans Ave,  Braimah's latest album The Hands Of Time puts the interconnectedness of African diasporic music into practice. Nikki Glaspie kindly went out of her way so that Rob and Seth could conduct their first-ever interview at Stanwood Studios in the Kirkwood section of Atlanta. Nikki talks about her highest profile bands - Kamani, Punkadelic and (of course) Nth Power. She describes some of her lockdown experiences, talks about her somewhat hidden singing talent, shares some of her experiences with Col. Bruce Hampton, explains her attachment to basketball and the relaxed conversation traverses many other topics. Glaspie also talks about how she met Bruno Speight from the iconic Atlanta electro-funk S.O.S Band, and about some of the lesser-known funk music who inspired her, particularly an early 80s release from Robson Jorge & Lincoln Olivetti. Nikki also happily leaps into the wayback machine and shares some of her earliest drumming memories, offers memories on touring with Beyonce and walks us through why her time with Dumpstaphunk was so pivotal. The episode also features some Nth Power music and concludes with an exclusive track from Nikki's band, Kamani. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Episode 043 welcomes DC-born, NOLA-based NIGEL HALL (Lettuce, Jon Cleary, ex-The Nth Power) to the show for an hour-plus Vulcan Mind Probe. Nige has been a friend for about a dozen years, and I've written extensively about his musical exploits, so this convergence was a very long time in the making. The extremely gifted, Grammy-nominated keyboardist/vocalist - singer/songwriter keeps a lot of artistic irons in the fire. Nigel's dropping sophomore solo LP Spiritual on May 14, 2021, a stunning sojourn into Soulquarian waters co-produced by DJ Harrison and backed by members of Butcher Brown.    @9mins- Introducing NIGEL HALL / @16mins-"Wake Me" Nigel Hall / @20mins - Interview  In a wide-ranging convo, topics include: what's the latest in New Orleans , we get the 411 on Nigel's musical partnership with NOLA-based Jon Cleary & the Absolute Monster Gentlemen. His motivations and inspirations behind the forthcoming Spiritual, as Nigel reveals a bit about his process and the project's native tongues. We unpack his role over the years with Lettuce, and how the keyboard chair and his contributions to the band have evolved over time. Quick detours to George Duke & J Dilla, with a funny Suwannee flashback or two to boot.  Naturally, we had to get into his time in The Nth Power, and he offers poignant, impassioned reflections that gave me chills. So did his defiant, righteous anger as a Black father to a pair of sons entering young adulthood. So many rabbit holes, with many stones left unturned. Super proud of this powerful powwow with one of the greatest to ever do it; a spiritual awakening of the soulful variety. Daughter to Black Southern ministers, Glaspie first hit the skins as a toddler, joined her mother's choir band, first finding her musical calling through the church. Boston's renowned Berkelee School of Music blessed Glaspie with a fine education and cracked a window to her future. Hours on hours of shedding and studying with Kenwood Dennard and David Fiuczynski. Stir Crazy With Steve Jenkins: Conversations With Creatives During The Quarantine

My guest this week is Nigel Hall-an amazing singer/keyboard player/multi-instrumentalist.Born and raised in Washington D.C. and currently residing in New Orleans, LA. Lettuce's keyboardist/vocalist Nigel Hall is an accomplished musician steeped in Gospel tradition, as well as classic soul, funk, hip hop and R&B. Hall was discovered by Lettuce co-founder Ryan Zoidis around 2007, who invited him to Brooklyn to meet Eric Krasno and record with jazz band Soulive. Nigel was a huge fan of Soulive and this was a major moment for his young career. At that same time Hall connected with Lettuce drummer Adam Deitch and The Roots drummer/founder Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson, and soon began appearing onstage with Soulive, Lettuce, and Royal Family affiliates. Nigel Hall was first nominated for a Grammy for his work on Ledesi's 2009 LP Turn Me Loose. In 2011, Hall decamped to New Orleans to immerse himself in the Crescent City's musical heritage. It was in NOLA where Hall was drafted by Jon Cleary for his band, and appears on the NOLA pianist's Grammy-winning LP Go-Go Juice. Hall toured with Robert Randolph and the Family Band, John Scofield, and briefly with Tedeschi-Trucks Band, before he was chosen as a keyboardist/vocalist for Warren Haynes Band. Hall appears on Warren Haynes Band's studio album Man in Motion and live LP Live at the Moody Theater, released on Stax Records. Hall appears on the Grammy nominated Family Dinner Vol.1 from Snarky Puppy, as well as Grammy-nominated album from New Orleans own Cha Wa. Hall has also appeared onstage with Marcus King, Pretty Lights, Dave Matthews Band, and more. In 2012, Hall co-founded The Nth Power, a funk/soul/R&B band with former Beyonce drummer Nikki Glaspie. In 2015 Hall departed The Nth Power and soon released Nigel Hall Band's critically acclaimed debut Ladies & Gentleman... A Bonnaroo 2013 performance saw Hall share the stage with the likes of Chaka Khan, Willie Weeks, James Gadsden, Derek Trucks, Susan Tedeschi, Solange, members of the Wu-Tang Clan, Anthony Hamilton, SchoolBoy Q, DJ Jazzy Jeff, Chance the Rapper, and Thundercat. As a solo artist, Hall has been nominated for the New Orleans Offbeat awards, won New Orleans Big Easy Award, and has been a featured solo artist at New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival for five consecutive years. Hall will be performing at New Orleans’ Essence Music Festival for the first time in July 2019. Nigel Hall joined Lettuce as a full-time keyboardist and vocalist in 2015. Hall is featured on Lettuce's forthcoming fifth full-length LP ELEVATE, due in June 2019. Nigel and I talk about all kinds of stuff including where he came from, what his favorite Christmas song is, All kinds of music stuff, and the importance of living your truth and being who you are. This is one of my favorite episodes yet and I think you’ll like it also. We talked yesterday and here’s how our conversation went.

Featured guests NIKKI GLASPIE and NICK CASSARINO of THE NTH POWER, as well as an introspective chat with Oregon-based artist/entrepreneur CLAY McCABE (of ZIPPER RESCUE). I am lucky and honored to call each of these inspiring human beings my dear friends in real life. The music of The Nth Power often reaches me with an emotional impact that is unrivaled in the culture today, and in that resonant reaction, I know I am far from alone. Nikki and Nicky Cake were kind enough to make some time for separate interviews, conducted in the cozy confines of the legendary High Sierra Music Festival 2019, over the 4th of July weekend in Quincy, CA. Due to the hectic nature of their festival itineraries, which we discuss in detail, neither were able to sit down with me for the customary, career-spanning interview that we like to unveil here at the Upful LIFE, but I can assure you that in the future, I intend to wrangle both Nikki and Nick for all of the important historically-relevant rabbit holes we can tunnel. For now, I am grateful to have gotten 15 potent minutes with "The Evangelist" Nikki, and 25 introspective minutes with "The Master Prophet" Cassarino. Then, on the heels of that abundance we take a deep dive with Mr. Zips, Clay McCabe, most certainly a person of interest in his own right.   R.I.P. "POPPA FUNK" ART NEVILLE (12.17.37 - 7.22.19)    Before getting into the three interviews, we had to take a few moments to pay tribute to the dearly departed Art "Poppa Funk" Neville, co-founder of The Neville Brothers and The Meters, and a true patriarch of New Orleans funk music. The legendary singer/organist peacefully passed on July 22nd after a lengthy illness. Few people have had the impact on multiple generations of fans and genres quite like Art Neville. The proof is in the music, and the music never stops. Condolences to his son Ian Neville of Dumpstaphunk, nephew Ivan Neville, the entire Neville family and the great city of New Orleans.   NIKKI GLASPIE INTERVIEW at 20mins       Nikki Glaspie has always held space for people in her life, through music, love, compassion and overstanding the human condition in a profound way. Just before taking the stage with her old friend Jen Hartswick and a phenomenal band, Glaspie sits down to explore a number of topics in a small window of time. We start with how to approach an mammoth endeavor like The Nth Power's tribute to Marvin Gaye (which we featured on Episode 017), prepping a big band for a tribute like this one or those that have come before. This discussion takes place after Nth had reprised the Marvin-homage a night earlier at HSMF. I asked her about Nth's emotional impact on their fans- in essence their "brand"- and their uncanny ability to inhabit the culture's generational greats and interpolate iconic songbooks of socially/politically relevant material. More on how those lyrics and messages are as important today as they were forty years ago.  www.HaroldRobinsonFoundation.org From there, a bit on "being the change you want to see", the current trio formation of The Nth Power, and how they write and perform music that is intentional. We transition into some philosophical/cultural matters of importance, and to how people can be of service to communities. Nikki takes this opportunity to let folks know about the efforts with the HAROLD ROBINSON FOUNDATION, in SoCal, a non-profit organization that works toward inspiring and empowering children (primarily people of color) trapped in a cycle of poverty within the inner city. We finish up this brief but enthralling chat with a trip into the wayback machine that takes us to Vermont with the Godmother herself, Jen Hartswick, who's responsible for The Nth Power's entire existence, and the connection between these two women, plus Nate Edgar and Nick Cassarino. When these four touched souls take the stage together, Nikki is steadfast- the sum is far greater than the parts. Thank you Nikki Glaspie, you are love. In between interviews, enjoy The Nth Power's brand-new track "Reach Out", recorded live from Paste Studios in NYC.    NICK CASSARINO INTERVIEW at 45mins Glaspie's bandmate and spiritual brother Nick Cassarino is among the more thrilling frontmen who is doin' the damn thing out there in 2019. His mojo has another gear, and the manner and fashion in which he connects with fans when performing is already the stuff of legend. We jump right into the J-Ha/Nth Power High Sierra takeover, how that all goes down, and why having the Vermont homie Bryan McNamara on hand was especially important to Nick. We touch on some of the same topics I did with Nikki, with regard to the Marvin Gaye tribute, stepping into the shoes of the giants, and how that sort of passion and purpose rubs off on The Nth Power's original music. Nick explains how the songwriting and performances for the forthcoming LP Reverence are about "focusing the vibe" and making the songs have the emotional impact necessary to communicate the salient messages within them, and do so inspired by the greats who've come before them, but delivered in their own unique Nth voice.  Jen Hartswick & Nick Cassarino with Trey Anastasio and Christian McBride Nick then takes the opportunity to speak on his scintillating duo project with Jen Hartswick, who's album together Nexus made Upful LIFE's 18 Favorite Albums of 2018. So we riff a little a bit further on their Vermont roots that Nikki spoke of earlier, bound to cover just a little more ground. Nick then ties it all together, and announces that J-Ha/Nick and The Nth Power are actually touring together soon. Yep, these two magical artistic entities will spread the healing power of music from city to city each and every night. On the J-Ha tip, Nick reflects on the night that Trey Anastasio and Christian McBride performed the Nexus material with Nick and Jen in NYC. For the exciting end of the interview, Cassarino takes us through the situation when John Mayer decided to sit in with him at Cassarino's standing Sunday solo gig at NYC's Olive Tree. Truly a fascinating tale, and boy, is Nicky Cake ever the story-teller. When we find the time to take the deep dive on his career-arc, please believe I will be asking him to spin yarns like these for the full hour.  Giving Thanks & Praises to both Nikki and Nick from The Nth Power for making the time for these wonderful shares. LARGE UP The Nth Power bassist Nate Edgar, on general principle. He may not have been interviewed on this day, but he is. without question, THE MAN, no two ways about it.  The Nth Power LOVES You. CLAY McCABE aka MR.ZIPS INTERVIEW AT 1HR 15MINS  Behold KING ZIPS!! Get Familiar at www.ZipperRescue.com To close out Episode 021 we welcome CLAY McCABE, aka MR.ZIPS to the show for a wonderful conversation that took place late at night at the ViBE JUNKiE Studios in Oakland Ca in the beginning of summer. For some context, I met Clay in the jungles of Costa Rica during Envision Festival in February 2014, and it's been a joy to check out his journey in this life ever since. He is the owner and proprietor of ZIPPER RESCUE, a patented zipper fix-it product kit that has become an invaluable item at festivals around the world, and most certainly in Black Rock City at the end of every August. Clay takes us through his international travels and meditations as a young man and how those experiences, plus his late father's death, prompted him to take the reigns at the family business, Zipper Rescue.  In addition to being a festy celebrity of sorts for his handy product and his willingness to help hundreds of people at every event he frequents, from Burning Man to Global Eclipse Gathering to the event that has his heart and his roots, Oregon Country Fair, Clay is also an tremendous artist and sculptor, so we discuss his early days making art at OCF and how that culture has informed his work moving forward. We talk Da Vinci's Workshop at Burning Man 2016, and some of his primary intentions and philosophies in creating art. Clay also had a pivotal role in the building of OneDome, the interactive art experience and mixed reality playground in downtown SF that was my former place of employ. The ambitious startup endeavor, conceived and unleashed by many members of Clay and my shared festival family, unfortunately ran out of funding and abruptly closed earlier this summer, but at the time of this interview, we were still holdin' on, and frankly there's plenty to be proud of with regard to working with OneDome. All in all, a revealing discussion with an extremely unique and inspired fella who, like Nikki and Nicky Cake before him, I am honored and proud to call a friend in real life.    *Vibe Junkie JAM of the Week*    North Carolina emcee RAPSODY drops an absolute heater in “Ibtihaj”, featuring GZA and D'Angelo!! "Ibtihaj" is named after Ibtihaj Muhammed, an Olympic fencer who won the bronze in the 2016 games and was the first American Olympian to wear a hijab while participating. Rapsody interpolates GZA's timeless 1995 classic "Liquid Swords" on her track, with the undeniable staccato groove that is burned into our skulls from so many spins through the years. R&B Jesus hops on the chorus, and somehow, D manages to take the Genius refrain "When the emcees came...", Gospelize it and make it his own, then GZA himself hops on for the ultimate co-sign, the guest verse. Such a lovely surprise, and Rapsody certainly holds her own betwixt these icons.    )'( PLEASE SUPPORT *ABRAXAS DRAGON* ART CAR At BURNING MAN 2019!! *CLICK HERE* )'(      The Upful LIFE Podcast is available on iTunes! Proposition 23: Job Killer or Creator?

Proposition 23: Yes or No? Bob Epstein, Founder, Environmental Entrepreneurs Nancy Floyd, Manging Director, Nth Power Jack Stewart, President, California Manufacturers Tom Tanton, President, T2 & Associates Greg Dalton, Climate One - Moderator The night before an election that would decide the fate of California’s landmark climate change law, a panel of energy experts convened by Climate One debates whether AB 32 would catalyze or cripple the state’s economy. The measure before voters, Proposition 23, would suspend AB 32 until California achieves four consecutive quarters of unemployment below 5.5%. Jack Stewart, President, California Manufacturers and Technology Association, and Tom Tanton, President, T2 & Associates, argue that with California suffering 12.4% unemployment, now is not the time to burden business with additional regulation. “There’s a lot of pain and very little gain,” in pushing ahead with the law, Tanton says. Stewart agrees: “Do we want to go forward and have a growing economy and hold off on AB 32,” he asks, “or do we hobble the California economy and make it more difficult to employ the 2.3 million Californians who are out of work?” Nancy Floyd, Founder and Managing Director, Nth Power, and Bob Epstein, Founder, Environmental Entrepreneurs, counter that cleantech is the fastest growing job sector in California and critical to maintaining the state’s competitive edge globally. Floyd says that 500,000 green jobs have already been created in California, and that her venture firm alone had invested $200 million in 35 companies in the state. Epstein takes issue with claims by Stewart and Tanton that California’s climate change rules would subject the state’s businesses to onerous regulations and uncertainty. “This legislation lays out a 10-year plan. For an oil company, they tell you every place you need to be for 10 years.” Win or lose on Nov. 2, Epstein says the fight over Prop 23 has succeeded in mobilizing interests – environmentalists, venture capitalists, utilities, and tech firms – with a stake in the green economy. “What you have done, by bringing Prop 23 to the table, is you united a community that really needed to be united,” he says. This program was recorded in front of a live audience at The Commonwealth Club in San Francisco on November 1, 2010
