Co-produced by Grammy-winning artist Esperanza Spalding, the album features originals and covers, including a re-interpretation of Charles Mingus’s “Goodbye Pork Pie Hat”. Harjo also transforms her 2015 poem, “I Pray for My Enemies”, into a feverish, free-form composition, while “Rabbit Is Up to Tricks” draws on the power of traditional oral storytelling and “Stomp All Night” delivers a fun and funk-filled jam. Acclaimed jazz vocalist Julia Keefe (Nez Perce) and the 16-piece ensemble of talented Native musicians known as the Indigenous Big Band make their album debut with “Incarnadine”. The album honors Native jazz pioneers like Mildred Bailey (Coeur d’Alene) and Jim Pepper (Kaw/Muscogee), as well as featuring innovative originals like “Wawasint8Da” and “Ddat Suite, MVT. 3 Iron Horse Gallup”. On this episode of The Bandwich Tapes, I sit down with Elizabeth Ziman of Elizabeth & the Catapult, and at the time of this conversation, she's about to release her new album. Now that the record is officially out in the world, we get to talk about everything that went into bringing it to life.We begin right at that moment, standing on the edge of a release. Elizabeth describes the feeling of finally letting go of a project after years of writing, recording, and refining, comparing it to sending something deeply personal out into the world and hoping it finds its place. From there, we dig into how this album differs from her past work. What started as scattered home recordings across multiple cities eventually became a deeply collaborative project, bringing together friends, choir members, and longtime collaborators. It's a record shaped not just by sound, but by movement, transition, and a desire to reconnect after a period of isolation. We also spend time talking about something that really resonates: the balance between perfectionism and letting go. Elizabeth shares how some songs took years to finish, while others were written and recorded quickly, and how learning to trust both processes has been a major part of her growth as an artist. There's also a fascinating conversation about the realities of being an independent artist today, the tension between creating meaningful work and navigating the demands of social media, promotion, and constant visibility. Elizabeth speaks candidly about that push and pull, and how she tries to stay grounded in what actually matters: the music and the connection it creates. One of my favorite moments in this episode is going full circle, talking about seeing her live back in 2009 at Eddie's Attic in Atlanta. That moment becomes a springboard into reflecting on a nearly 20-year career, and how her perspective on music has shifted from “this is hard” to “I get to do this.”We also explore her background, from classical piano and Manhattan School of Music competitions to Berklee, where she found her artistic voice and began collaborating with musicians like Esperanza Spalding. Along the way, we talk about film scoring, directing a women's choir, and the many creative paths that continue to shape her work. This is a conversation about evolution, perspective, and learning to hold both discipline and freedom at once.Key TakeawaysElizabeth Ziman's new album is now out, marking a deeply collaborative and expansive creative chapter. The project began as home recordings across multiple cities before evolving into a full studio production.Balancing perfectionism with spontaneity has become central to her songwriting process. The modern music landscape presents both opportunities and challenges, especially around visibility and promotion.Nearly 20 years into her career, her perspective has shifted toward gratitude and creative freedom. Her background in classical piano and Berklee continues to influence her work today.Collaborating across disciplines—film scoring, choir directing, and teaching—feeds her creativity.Music from the EpisodeResponsible Friend - Elizabeth and the Catapult50/50 - Elizabeth and the CatapultBored of Myself - Elizabeth and the CatapultI Love You Still - Elizabeth and the CatapultAbout the PodcastThe Bandwich Tapes is my chance to sit down with musicians, songwriters, and creative artists for thoughtful conversations about their craft, their journey, and the experiences that shape the music we hear.Connect with the ShowEmail: contact@thebandwichtapes.com

Today I am excited and honored to be talking with Dr. Shamell Bell and Sherena Razek, two activist scholars who join us to talk about their work on the Coalition for Action in Higher Education, which will be convening it Third Annual National Day of Action (insert link) on April 17th.  We talk about  the unique and central position CAHE occupies on the activist landscape.  The Coalition brings together labor, anti-fascist and anti-racist activists, and those working for Palestinian freedom.   CAHE energizes the educational sphere by refusing to shy away from taking radical positions, by embracing boundary-crossing and close affiliations with diverse communities, by defending the most vulnerable, and insisting on free education in every sense of the word. CAHE aims to both hold university administrators and trustees accountable, but also to recognize and grow our own strength with imagination, creativity, and mutual care.Dr. Shamell Bell is a global movement artist, scholar, and visionary cultural strategist whose work lives at the intersection of radical imagination, embodied activism, and unconditional love. She earned her Ph.D. in Culture and Performance from UCLA and recently completed a teaching appointment in Theater, Dance & Media at Harvard University.  As an interdisciplinary scholar and documentary filmmaker, Dr. Bell explores the power of embodiment, collective freedom dreaming, and multimedia storytelling to disrupt oppressive systems and ignite transformation. Her social impact work in the entertainment industry includes collaborations with artists such as Common, Dominique Fishback, Lalah Hathaway, and Esperanza Spalding. She also served as Supervising Producer on the Emmy-nominated series Lessons in Chemistry. Dr. Bell is co-social impact director—alongside Ms. Gwen Carr, mother of Eric Garner—for Ritual of Breath is the Rite to Resist, a performance project responding to state-sanctioned violence. She organizes for economic justice with the Debt Collective as its Visionary Escalator, advocating for student debt abolition and debt-free college for all. She also serves on the steering committee for the Coalition for Action in Higher Education and co-chairs their Antifascism caucus.Sherena Razek is a diasporic Palestinian feminist educator, scholar, activist, and labor organizer. Currently, she is a President's and Andrew W. Mellon Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Gender Studies at the University of California Los Angeles. She holds a PhD from the Department of Modern Culture and Media at Brown University where she was the President of the Graduate Labor Organization and co-founder of the Palestine Solidarity Caucus. Her research focuses on Palestinian visual culture, anti-imperialist struggle, and decolonial feminist ecologies.

Long recognized as one of the most thrilling and thoughtful guitarists of his generation, Matthew Stevens has built an elite reputation in music, touring, and recording with a "who's who" of modern icons, including Esperanza Spalding, Chief Xian aTunde Adjuah, Harvey Mason, and Walter Smith Ill. He has also made a splash outside of jazz, having produced the tribute album I Am A Pilgrim - Doc Watson at 100, featuring artists such as Valerie June, Steve Earle, Nora Brown, and Dolly Parton (Stevens produced Parton's version of "The Last Thing on My Mind," which earned a GRAMMY nomination for Best Country Solo Performance in 2024). A culmination of 20 years of craft, the eponymous album serves as a mid-career mission statement with Stevens stepping into the spotlight. Co-produced by Stevens, saxophonist Josh Johnson, and percussionist Eric Doob, the record seamlessly melds acoustic and electric sonics through a mix of genre-blurring originals and deeply personal covers. It features a multigenerational cast of musicians who have had a profound impact on Stevens' journey, including rising visionaries like vibraphonist Joel Ross and vocalists Anna B Savage and Corey King, in addition to his mentor Terri Lyne Carrington and personal guitar hero Jeff Parker. At the album's core is a band of his most trusted collaborators, which also includes keyboardist Chris Fishman and bassist Kyle Miles, with additional contributions from percussionist Paulo Stagnaro and guitarists Dylan Day and Rich Hinman on slide and pedal steel. Matthew Stevens reflects a period of profound personal and artistic change, ultimately bringing him to "a place of optimism, excitement, and confidence" that signals a bold new chapter for one of jazz's most essential voices and respected players. website www.mattstevens.com www.instagram.com/matthewthomaswyatt  Spotify https://open.spotify.com/artist/7z1PSpsIyAeniOOtaQ1iYa?si=cS9P53EIR46Qs9X4YvAd-g About Music Matters with Darrell Craig Harris The Music Matters Podcast is hosted by Darrell Craig Harris, a globally published music journalist, professional musician, and Getty Images photographer. On this episode of The Bandwich Tapes, I sit down with pianist, composer, improviser, label founder, and educator Kris Davis—one of the most forward-thinking voices in creative music today. Our conversation left me feeling genuinely energized. Kris approaches music with a rare combination of curiosity, discipline, and fearless experimentation, and it was a joy to dig into how all of that shows up in her work.We start with what's immediately ahead for her: a trip to Hamburg to premiere a newly expanded big band version of a trio piece with the NDR Big Band. Kris shares the very real “composer panic” that comes with catching an engraving mistake right before rehearsal—one of those behind-the-scenes realities of composing that every musician can relate to.From there, we talk about festivals—especially Big Ears, which feels like its own musical universe—and dive into two major pillars of her work: prepared piano and large-form composition. Kris reflects on studying with pianist Benoît Delbecq, whose approach to prepared piano emphasized rhythm, individuality, and finding a personal sonic vocabulary. One of the highlights of our conversation is a deep look at her remarkable Solastalgia Suite, written for the Lutosławski Quartet after a commission through Poland's Jazz to Pad Festival. Kris talks about learning how to write for strings in real time and how the concept of **solastalgia—the grief you feel for your home while you're still living in it—**became the emotional core of the piece. We also zoom out into the bigger picture of her work: her leadership role alongside Terri Lyne Carrington at Berklee's Institute of Jazz and Gender Justice, and her decade-long journey building Pyroclastic Records, a label dedicated to supporting adventurous music and the artists creating it. At its heart, this conversation is about craft, community, curiosity, and the importance of taking creative risks on purpose.Key TakeawaysThe behind-the-scenes realities of composing for large ensembles—including last-minute engraving panic before a premiere. Why festivals like Big Ears create a unique ecosystem for creative music. How studying with Benoît Delbecq shaped Kris Davis's approach to prepared piano. The creative challenge of writing for string quartet for the first time. The emotional meaning of solastalgia and how it shaped the Solastalgia Suite.Kris's work at Berklee's Institute of Jazz and Gender Justice alongside Terri Lyne Carrington. How Pyroclastic Records has grown into an important platform for adventurous and forward-thinking music.Music from the EpisodeDiatom Ribbons — Kris DavisInterlude (from the Solastalgia Suite) — Kris DavisLife on Venus (from the Solastalgia Suite) — Kris DavisRun the Gauntlet — Kris DavisAbout the PodcastThe Bandwich Tapes is a long-form conversation podcast where host Brad Williams sits down with some of the most thoughtful musicians, composers, and artists working today. In the shadow of this challenging time, Julia shared some fascinating specifics into how her voice teachers Jo, Theo Bleckmann and also Kate McGarry helped push her artistic and expressive boundaries, and later what a transformative experience it was to be mentored by Esperanza Spalding. Julia's identity as an Indigenous jazz musician shapes her creative life in so many affirming and inspirational ways; I'm so happy to share this meaningful conversation with you. Episode 92: Joe Lovano. Joe Lovano is one of the greatest musicians of all time. A Grammy-winning saxophonist who's been on the cover of DownBeat magazine multiple times (as well as many others), a Blue Note Records legend with 25 releases, a Berklee alum, and he holds the Gary Burton Chair in Jazz Performance at Berklee College of Music, which he's had since 2001. He also happens to be my cousin and one of the biggest inspirations and mentors in my life. This was our first time ever doing something like this together. A 3-hour deep dive interview that covers (nearly) his entire career. We go into our family history, growing up in Cleveland, our Sicilian roots, his father Tony “Big T” Lovano, and how that shaped his sound and spirit. We talk about his time with Elvin Jones, Jack DeJohnette, John Scofield, Charlie Haden, Esperanza Spalding, Michael Brecker, McCoy Tyner, Paul Motian, Bill Frisell, Hank Jones, Dave Holland, Joshua Redman, Al Foster, and many more. Joe shares lessons from decades of leading bands, developing tone, mentoring young players, and living a full creative life with his wife of 50 years, Judi Silvano. Joe is one of the greatest musicians alive, a music historian, and an incredible educator and mentor. THE SPLENDID BOHEMIANS PRESENT "DOUBLE TROUBLE" - ACES OF BASS WITH TAL WILKENFELD AND ESPERANZA SPALDING. DOUBLE DOWN!!

---

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 28, 2025 16:49

At risk of seeming sexist, it must be noted that the two prodigies of the bass featured here are female, and perhaps that, in some sense, informs their approach to their artistry.  Listening to BC by Tal Wilkenfeld, and Esparanza Spalding's Vague Suspicions, one cannot help but appreciate both the technical precision, and the soulfulness of their musical expression. The bass rarely takes the lead in an ensemble - they are usually responsible for holding down the bottom with the drums. However, occasionally, the bassist will step forward into the limelight - Charlie Mingus and Jaco Pastorius come to mind - and, this inversion can lead to some amazing revelations. ESPERANZA SPALDINGI was inspired to read that Esperanza Spalding had been afflicted with Juvenile idiopathic Arthritis as a child. That this was to be the launching pad for a career as master of one of the most physically demanding instruments imaginable - the upright bass -, puts me in awe.  (She also plays the violin, guitar, piano and the oboe). Having the ears and instincts of a prodigy, she was given a full scholarship to the Berkelee School of Music, where she was also granted an honorary doctorate and professorship at age 20.By the way: let's not neglect to mention her singing, which is miraculous, lifting easily from conversational mode to a soaring airiness, there are unmistakeable echoes of Billie and Ella.  Besides all this, she's on a mission to make jazz more mainstream - attested by the title of the album Radio Music Society, from which this track derives. If anyone can accomplish this feat, it's this Grammy Award winner. TAL WILKENFELDI first became aware of Tal Wilkenfeld when I saw Jeff Beck play A Day in the Life at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame ceremonies. There was Beck, looking relaxed and dashing - delicately maneuvering his whammy bar… and to his left stood what looked like a street urchin with wild ringlets, following his every nuance, note for note, wielding a massive Fender bass, which was as big as she was. It was alchemy. Later, I watched the Live at Ronnie Scott's video where you could really see the two magicians extended celebration. She was around 20 at the time, possessed of a preternatural talent, and sidekick to one of the greatest guitarists who ever lived. Since then, the master has left this realm, and the apprentice has stepped forward to become her own front person - living in Nashville, playing with her band, and her calendar is filled with multiple special appearances and collaborations. And, to top it all, she's jolly. Her sense of humor is obvious, partnering with comedians, Marc Maron, Spinal Tap, and Jeff Ross on their projects.

Otis Brown III didn't just grow up around music, he was shaped by it. With a father who drummed for legends like James Brown and Al Green, and a mother who was a classically trained pianist and choir director, Otis was raised in a home where rhythm and soul were a way of life. In this episode, we trace Otis's journey from early church gigs to Donald Byrd's midnight mentorship and on to stages with Esperanza Spalding and Robert Glasper. He breaks down his debut album, The Thought of You, the emotional power of drumming, and the unique pressure of leading a band. We also unpack Whiplash, the dark side of music education, and whether greatness comes from obsession, or in spite of it. Plus: his take on Kendrick Lamar, jazz-meets-hip-hop fusion, and the rhythms that speak louder than words. Guest bio: Otis Brown is a Grammy-nominated jazz drummer, composer, and recording artist who is a go-to session and touring sideman. He's studied under jazz icon Donald Byrd and trained at The New School. He's performed with Joe Lovano, Esperanza Spalding, and Gerald Clayton, known for his expressive playing, deep humility, and dedication to elevating music with soul and purpose. SUPPORT THE ZACH SHOW BY SUBSCRIBING TO THE ZACH SHOW 2.0 (BONUS EPISODES & EXCLUSIVE CONTENT): https://auxoro.supercast.com/ OTIS BROWN III LINKS:Website: http://www.obthree.com/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/ob3isme/The Thought Of You (Spotify): https://bit.ly/45ugNDLTwitter: https://x.com/ob3ismeFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/ob3isme THE ZACH SHOW LINKS:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/auxoro/YouTube:  https://bit.ly/3CLjEqFNewsletter: https://therealzachwrites.substack.com/TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@auxoropod To support the show, please leave a review on Spotify and Apple Podcasts. We interviewed Esperanza Spalding back in 2022 for Tape Op issue 147, around the time she had just finished her 8th album, Songwrights Apothecary Lab. Her latest release, Milton+Esperanza, is a Grammy-nominated collaboration with Brazilian music legend Milton Nascimento. The album is a compelling body of work that includes re-imaginations of Nascimento originals, covers, and new collaborative songs. Geoff Stanfield caught up with Esperanza from her home in Portland, Oregon, to discuss the new album and some of her favorite Milton tracks. Enjoy!
