THE SPLENDID BOHEMIANS PRESENT "DOUBLE TROUBLE" - ACES OF BASS WITH TAL WILKENFELD AND ESPERANZA SPALDING. DOUBLE DOWN!!

At risk of seeming sexist, it must be noted that the two prodigies of the bass featured here are female, and perhaps that, in some sense, informs their approach to their artistry.  Listening to BC by Tal Wilkenfeld, and Esparanza Spalding's Vague Suspicions, one cannot help but appreciate both the technical precision, and the soulfulness of their musical expression. The bass rarely takes the lead in an ensemble - they are usually responsible for holding down the bottom with the drums. However, occasionally, the bassist will step forward into the limelight - Charlie Mingus and Jaco Pastorius come to mind - and, this inversion can lead to some amazing revelations. ESPERANZA SPALDINGI was inspired to read that Esperanza Spalding had been afflicted with Juvenile idiopathic Arthritis as a child. That this was to be the launching pad for a career as master of one of the most physically demanding instruments imaginable - the upright bass -, puts me in awe.  (She also plays the violin, guitar, piano and the oboe). Having the ears and instincts of a prodigy, she was given a full scholarship to the Berkelee School of Music, where she was also granted an honorary doctorate and professorship at age 20.By the way: let's not neglect to mention her singing, which is miraculous, lifting easily from conversational mode to a soaring airiness, there are unmistakeable echoes of Billie and Ella.  Besides all this, she's on a mission to make jazz more mainstream - attested by the title of the album Radio Music Society, from which this track derives. If anyone can accomplish this feat, it's this Grammy Award winner. TAL WILKENFELDI first became aware of Tal Wilkenfeld when I saw Jeff Beck play A Day in the Life at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame ceremonies. There was Beck, looking relaxed and dashing - delicately maneuvering his whammy bar… and to his left stood what looked like a street urchin with wild ringlets, following his every nuance, note for note, wielding a massive Fender bass, which was as big as she was. It was alchemy. Later, I watched the Live at Ronnie Scott's video where you could really see the two magicians extended celebration. She was around 20 at the time, possessed of a preternatural talent, and sidekick to one of the greatest guitarists who ever lived. Since then, the master has left this realm, and the apprentice has stepped forward to become her own front person - living in Nashville, playing with her band, and her calendar is filled with multiple special appearances and collaborations. And, to top it all, she's jolly. Her sense of humor is obvious, partnering with comedians, Marc Maron, Spinal Tap, and Jeff Ross on their projects.

Otis Brown III didn't just grow up around music, he was shaped by it. With a father who drummed for legends like James Brown and Al Green, and a mother who was a classically trained pianist and choir director, Otis was raised in a home where rhythm and soul were a way of life. In this episode, we trace Otis's journey from early church gigs to Donald Byrd's midnight mentorship and on to stages with Esperanza Spalding and Robert Glasper. He breaks down his debut album, The Thought of You, the emotional power of drumming, and the unique pressure of leading a band. We also unpack Whiplash, the dark side of music education, and whether greatness comes from obsession, or in spite of it. Plus: his take on Kendrick Lamar, jazz-meets-hip-hop fusion, and the rhythms that speak louder than words. Guest bio: Otis Brown is a Grammy-nominated jazz drummer, composer, and recording artist who is a go-to session and touring sideman. He's studied under jazz icon Donald Byrd and trained at The New School. He's performed with Joe Lovano, Esperanza Spalding, and Gerald Clayton, known for his expressive playing, deep humility, and dedication to elevating music with soul and purpose. SUPPORT THE ZACH SHOW BY SUBSCRIBING TO THE ZACH SHOW 2.0 (BONUS EPISODES & EXCLUSIVE CONTENT): https://auxoro.supercast.com/ OTIS BROWN III LINKS:Website: http://www.obthree.com/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/ob3isme/The Thought Of You (Spotify): https://bit.ly/45ugNDLTwitter: https://x.com/ob3ismeFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/ob3isme THE ZACH SHOW LINKS:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/auxoro/YouTube:  https://bit.ly/3CLjEqFNewsletter: https://therealzachwrites.substack.com/TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@auxoropod To support the show, please leave a review on Spotify and Apple Podcasts. Welcome to the Blink Friction Arts Podcast and the Music Crazy Robots.Today we are holding the Low End: exploring Renowned Female Double Bass Players Who Changed the GameWhen we think of double bass players, it's easy to conjure images of towering instruments, smoky jazz clubs, and the deep rumble of classical orchestras. But while the double bass has long been considered a male-dominated instrument—perhaps due to its sheer size and physicality—women have not only held their own but reshaped the narrative in profound and inspiring ways. Here's a celebration of some of the most renowned female double bass players, spanning genres from classical to jazz, who continue to break boundaries and make their mark.1. Esperanza SpaldingIf there's a modern icon of bass brilliance, it's Esperanza Spalding. A musical prodigy, Spalding plays both double bass and electric bass with virtuosic ease, weaving jazz, fusion, classical, and soul into a genre-defying tapestry. She made headlines in 2011 by winning the Grammy for Best New Artist—an award rarely given to jazz musicians. With a string of critically acclaimed albums and boundary-pushing live performances, Spalding's influence reaches far beyond the bass community. She's also a professor at Harvard, emphasizing innovation in music and performance.2. Chi-chi NwanokuBritish-born Chi-chi Nwanoku is a trailblazer in the classical music world. As the founder of the Chineke! Orchestra—the first professional orchestra in Europe made up of majority Black and ethnically diverse musicians—she has made it her mission to open doors in a traditionally exclusionary space. A formidable double bassist in her own right, Chi-chi was a principal bassist with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment for over 30 years. Her career blends musical excellence with social justice, making her a vital voice in contemporary classical music.3. Linda May Han OhHailing from Australia and now based in New York, Linda May Han Oh has become one of the most in-demand jazz bassists of her generation. Whether leading her own projects or playing with legends like Pat Metheny, Joe Lovano, or Vijay Iyer, Oh brings a deep musicality and sharp improvisational mind to every performance. Her tone is warm, articulate, and commanding, with an emotional range that speaks volumes. She also teaches at the Berklee College of Music and the New School, nurturing the next wave of bass talent.4. Kristin KorbA rare mix of bassist and vocalist, Kristin Korb blends bebop agility with a velvet voice. Originally from the U.S. and now based in Denmark, Korb carries forward the tradition of singing bassists (think Ray Brown or Slam Stewart) but with a distinctively elegant and lyrical touch. Her interpretations of jazz standards are joyful, inventive, and rhythmically tight, making her performances feel both timeless and fresh.5. Caroline EmeryFor lovers of classical double bass pedagogy, Caroline Emery is a key figure. A professor at the Royal College of Music in London, Emery has trained a generation of outstanding bassists, many of whom now play in top orchestras worldwide. She's known for her work with young musicians and her emphasis on posture, breath, and physical awareness—an essential contribution to transforming how double bass is taught and performed.6. Jennifer LeithamJennifer Leitham, a veteran of the jazz scene and an accomplished composer, performer, and educator, is best known for her work with the likes of Mel Tormé and Doc Severinsen. Her playing is powerful and deeply rooted in jazz tradition, but she's also known for pushing the envelope both musically and personally. As a transgender woman in jazz, Leitham has been an advocate for visibility and acceptance in the music world, proving that artistry and authenticity go hand in hand.7. Amy DominguesClassically trained yet artistically adventurous, Amy Domingues has explored everything from Baroque continuo playing to post-rock collaborations and experimental sound art. Based in Washington, D.C., she's a cellist and double bassist with a unique voice. Her work highlights the double bass's capacity for subtlety, beauty, and textural depth across genres. Why Representation MattersThe double bass may be one of the largest and most physically imposing instruments in the orchestra or on the bandstand, but these women show that passion, skill, and vision aren't confined by size or stereotype. They've not only expanded what's possible on the instrument—they've redefined who gets to play it.Whether you're a student, a listener, or a player yourself, exploring the work of these bassists is a powerful reminder of music's capacity to evolve—and to include.Want to dive deeper? Check out performances by these players on YouTube, explore their discographies on streaming platforms, and follow their latest work on social media. And if you're learning bass yourself—take heart: these legends prove that the possibilities are endless.Follow the music crazy team on YouTub @taletellerclub

Episode 57 - Elena Pinderhughes is one of the most sought-after musicians in today's vibrant jazz scene. From touring with legends like Herbie Hancock, Common, and Chief Adjuah to performing the iconic “Mask Off” with Future on the Coachella Main Stage, Elena has already brought the flute to a new level. She's a prominent figure in this wave of brilliant young musicians rising within the new jazz world. The first time I heard her play flute, it was alongside the jazz world's GOAT, Herbie Hancock, and I immediately knew she was different. Her sound didn't just complement something already iconic—she elevated it. Since then, I've seen her perform with Terrace Martin, Lalah Hathaway, Snarky Puppy, and so many more. I wanted to understand how she's achieved so much at such a young age.I'd boil it down to these things: Intention, mind set, dedication, and a strong support system with her brother, Samora Pinderhughes.Elena talks about her journey—from being a teenage jazz star to becoming a first-call collaborator across genres. She shares stories about working with Herbie Hancock, Chief Adjuah, Esperanza Spalding, Robert Glasper, and Josh Groban, diving into the lessons she's learned and how she's crafted her unique sound. We explore the modern jazz scene, how she's making her mark, and how she balances artistry with building a thriving career.Elena Pinderhughes is a trailblazer in both jazz and pop culture, and there's no question—her career is only going up from here.‘Go with Elmo Lovano' is a weekly podcast where Elmo interviews creatives and entrepreneurs in music on HOW they push forward every day, got where they are in their careers, manage their personal lives, and share lessons learned and their most important insights. Please SUBSCRIBE / FOLLOW this podcast to catch new episodes as soon as they drop! Shabaka Hutchings is a celebrated saxophone player and a major figure in London's contemporary jazz scene. He was the bandleader for Sons of Kemet and Shabaka and the Ancestors, and part of the electronic jazz group The Comet Is Coming. But on New Year's Day of 2023, he announced he'd be putting down the saxophone for good and focusing on a new instrument: the flute. Starting with the Japanese shakuhachi and expanding to a variety of traditional flutes, he's now out with his first full-length album under his solo moniker of Shabaka. The album is called 'Perceive Its Beauty, Acknowledge Its Grace,' and features collaborations with Carlos Niño, Laraaji, Andre 3000, Floating Points, Esperanza Spalding, Moses Sumney, and more. Shabaka talks with KEXP's Isabel Khalili about his transition from saxophone to flute and how it's helped him learn to release tension and relax into playing. He also discusses his thoughts on the term "Afrofuturism," how he's embraced Octavia Butler's ideas on the inevitability of change, what it means to heal through music, and his search for meaning outside of a Western colonial paradigm.Support the show: https://www.kexp.org/sound/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Though he's known for his fiery, raging performances with groups like Sons of Kemet, The Comet Is Coming, and Shabaka and The Ancestors, Shabaka Hutchings eases into a contemplative zone with his debut solo album, Perceive Its Beauty, Acknowledge Its Grace.  Released on Impulse! Records and recorded at the legendary Van Gelder Studio in New Jersey—where John Coltrane cut A Love Supreme and many other jazz classics were committed to tape—the album finds Hutchings setting down his sax in favor of a variety of flutes and pondering questions about what it means to be, what it means to do, and how one gives themselves over to energizing forces. Joined by guests including Saul Williams, Euclid, Esperanza Spalding, Floating Points, Laraaji, poet Anum Iyapo, Carlos Nino, and fellow flute devotee André 3000, Hutchings drifts into a gentle, new age-inspired zone, blending spiritual jazz expression with ambient sensibilities.  “What does it mean to have music of spiritual substance?“What does it mean to be spiritual? What is spirit?” This week on Transmissions, Shabaka Hutchings joins us to discuss that force, his shift toward the flute, the influence of Outkast, and connecting with his father on a creative level.  Transmissions is a part of the Talkhouse Podcast Network. Sad news for all of us: producer Rachael Cusick— who brought us soul-stirring stories rethinking grief (https://zpr.io/GZ6xEvpzsbHU) and solitude (https://zpr.io/eT5tAX6JtYra), as well as colorful musings on airplane farts (https://zpr.io/CNpgUijZiuZ4) and belly flops (https://zpr.io/uZrEz27z63CB) and Blueberry Earths (https://zpr.io/EzxgtdTRGVzz)— is leaving the show. So we thought it perfect timing to sit down with her and revisit another brainchild of hers, The Cataclysm Sentence, a collection of advice for The End. To explain: one day in 1961, the famous physicist Richard Feynman stepped in front of a Caltech lecture hall and posed this question to a group of undergraduate students: “If, in some cataclysm, all of scientific knowledge were to be destroyed, and only one sentence was passed on to the next generation of creatures, what statement would contain the most information in the fewest words?” Now, Feynman had an answer to his own question—a good one. But his question got the entire team at Radiolab wondering, what did his sentence leave out? So we posed Feynman's cataclysm question to some of our favorite writers, artists, historians, futurists—all kinds of great thinkers. We asked them “What's the one sentence you would want to pass on to the next generation that would contain the most information in the fewest words?” What came back was an explosive collage of what it means to be alive right here and now, and what we want to say before we go.
