Send us your thoughts! Swedish jazz virtuoso Ebba Åsman has announced the forthcoming release of her third full-length record When You Know. The new album arrives March 21st, 2025 via Dorado Records.Coinciding with the announcement of ‘When You Know' of the upcoming album are the joint first singles - the title track ‘When You Know' and ‘No Answer'. The pair of songs channel the feelings that came into clarity for Åsman during her time in the woods: the stresses of not knowing where you're headed, sensing that you're losing grip of the life you've built, drowning in the infinite questions that swirl around in your head – and ultimately, accepting the uncertainty of it all. The latter track has been described as the turning point of the album, where acceptance of the circumstances begin to prevail.Coming off of a Swedish Grammy (GRAMMIS) nomination for her 2023 sophomore album ‘Be Free', live showings at North Sea Jazz Festival and London's Ronnie Scott's and an appointment as one of Yamaha's brand ambassadors, the trombonist, songwriter and producer sought to quiet the noise around her and challenge the jazz genre's rigid rules for her next project. The end result is ‘When You Know'; a smoky and melancholic 10-track cocktail of jazz, alternative R&B, indie, Hip-Hop and ambient sonics that experiments at every turn. On hand to co-produce the record and provide the electronic elements that move ‘When You Know' away from the jazz world and into more avant-garde territory, Ebba collaborated with Berlin-based producer Lucy Liebe. Packing a potent emotional punch into a running time of just 31 minutes, the 10 tracks are a reflection of Ebba herself: direct, driven, precise. Retreating to a cabin outside of her small hometown of Hammarö, 200 miles west of Stockholm, she recorded the album in the dead of winter. With the temperatures outside nearing minus-thirty degrees, Åsman logged off for a month – disconnecting from TV, social media and emails. Embracing with vigour both the deep sense of calm and the challenges that come with the cold but also the stillness and solitude that is yielded being in the wilderness.Though this is Åsman's third studio album, it will be the first time she's singing on record. An important statement and moment of transition for Ebba. Elaborating on this further she said: “If you're singing, you are the closest you can be to your own expression but I wanted to first be respected as an instrumentalist. If you're a woman and you tell people you're a musician, everyone assumes and says “Oh – so you're a singer?”. ‘When You Know' will mark the moment on which Ebba Åsman's exceptional gifts are finally crystallised. At age 7, she began learning trombone and by 15, she won a place to study the instrument at the Södra Latin School in Stockholm. The renowned hot-house for Swedish talent whose alumni include Lykke Li, Yung Lean and the prolific hit songwriter Max Martin. But when she moved to the Netherlands to study at the Rotterdam Conservatory of Music, she began to push against the constraints of formal learning.  Self-identifying as a “jazz rebel”, rather than being preoccupied with the theoretical and mechanical aspects of jazz, Ebba operates from a mode of pure intuition and feeling. At just 26, ‘When You Know' finds Åsman continuing to push the boundaries of jazz through the two distinct sides of her musical self: the notes she conjures from the trombone and now, her voice.Support the show

Her latest project Spend Spend Spend has just opened at the Royal Exchange theatre in Manchester and is the story of the infamous Viv Nicholson who in the 1960's won today's equivalent of a few million pounds and went on to spend it all on very public lavish spending-sprees. In this episode — recorded on the somewhat sombre Wednesday after the U.S. elections — we welcome the wonderful Beverley Glick to our Hammersmith lair and ask her about her New Romantic nom de plume Betty Page. Beverley tells us about her early days on Sounds, where she started out as editor Alan Lewis' secretary, and talks us through her seminal 1980 encounters with Spandau Ballet and Steve Strange. Her subsequent early interview with Duran Duran leads us to clips from David Keeps' 1993 audio interview with the Brummie band's frontman Simon Le Bon. After touching briefly on Depeche Mode, whom Beverley also interviewed very early on, our guest revisits the short-lived Noise! — Sounds' very own attempt at "doing" a Smash Hits — and recounts her subsequent path to the editorship of the rather longer-standing Record Mirror. Memories of mad moments with Happy Mondays (for Vox), and Beverley's eventual graduation to national newspapers, take us to her decision to forsake journalism for a career as a life coach specialising in "leadership communication" — and as the author of this year's In Your Own Words. A few glum thoughts on the political distortion of words such as "freedom" segue into our homage to the brilliant and outrageous Quincy Jones. Mark then quotes from newly-added library pieces about the Who (1965) and Ronnie Scott (1979)... and Jasper wraps up the episode with his thoughts on articles about "Brazilian Prince" Ed Motta (2006) and Tricky's magnificent Maxinquaye (2023). This cut off Jeff Beck's second solo effort was produced by the magisterial George Martin, the Beatle's north star. The song was gifted to Jeff by Stevie Wonder, who did so, (according to JB), as an apology for having released the barn-burner Superstition first, after promising to let Jeff have it. He needn't have worried - the plangent tone and human voicing Jeff discovered while creating this track was akin to a 49er striking the motherlode. Fittingly, he dedicated the recording to Roy Buchanan - another guitar master of a similar tonal inclination. It's uncanny - watching Beck's delicate hands on the Live at Ronnie Scott's video: the fluidity that this whammy bar wizard achieves creating the illusion of a cooing human voice, pregnant with longing and passion, takes my breath away. As the bare fingers of his right hand caress the spring loaded whammy bar, sensuously modulating the pitch and vibrato, he makes love to his instrument. It's pure romance. The recent demise of this musical icon came as a shock because he always seemed like Peter Pan, eternally youthful, with his toned, sleeveless arms and bowl haircut - a shredding bad boy. Not just another British Invasion survivor from decades past, but an ever fresh and present musical force. Well, Thanatos, you may have taken his life, but, Death be not proud - his soul will live forever.

Due to the torrential L.A. rains and a total lack of interest, Greg neither attended nor watched the Grammy Awards this year. He was, however, kind enough to cover the show for us this year. (Thanks Greg!)Songs:Jeff Beck - “Stratus (Live at Ronnie Scott's)”Jay brings a rare, feel good, bipartisan news story this week as lawmakers on both sides of the aisle lock arms to keep AM radio alive. With major auto manufacturers ditching the old technology, the right claims censorship of conservative talk radio's favorite little spectrum, while the left wants to put “Unsafe in Emergency” warning labels on the new vehicles. While shared frustration over amplitude modulation has gripped the nation, all is not lost. Turns out, according to Jay, internet radio is actually pretty awesome and we should all be listening to that now instead!Song: The Smile - “Read The Room”Internet Radio Stations:https://www.shadypinesradio.com/https://www.wtmd.org/radio/https://www.wwoz.org/https://walmradio.com/jazz/https://www.laurelcanyonradio.com/https://motherearthradio.de/Finally, Nick reports that UMG has called a time-out on TikTok as millions of videos went silent over the weekend. While the failed license negotiations are meant to generate better pay for the artists, UMG somehow completely botched it on the PR front as stories, such as the viral TikTok from @codyfrymusic, of artists losing revenues dominates the news. Nick And Simon Discuss the short lived but influential London Jazz club "Club Eleven", named after the number of founder members, began life just before Christmas in 1948. It was a co-operative arrangement designed to bring bebop to the attention of the jazz public at large. The musicians involved were Ronnie Scott, Hank Shaw, Leon Calvert, Johnny Rogers, Bernie Fenton, Tommy Pollard, Lennie Bush, Joe Muddel, Tony Crombie and Laurie Morgan plus manager Harry Morris. Johnny Dankworth and Denis Rose were regulars from the start. Some gave up steady work, Scott left Ted Heath, Fenton severed relations with Oscar Rabin, and Rose, Crombie, Muddel and Dankworth came from the now defunct Tito Burns orchestra. This venue with these musicians were the first truly organised bebop sessions in Britain. With the star-studded assembly of musicians, Club Eleven became the focal point for the new jazz and the inspiration to many other young musicians throughout the country. The music was played by the Johnny Dankworth Quartet comprising Dankworth, Bernie Fenton (pno), Joe Muddel (bs), and Laurie Morgan (d) and a band led by Ronnie Scott with Hank Shaw (tpt), Johnny Rogers (alto), Tommy Pollard (pno), Lennie Bush (bs), and Tony Crombie (d). The Dankworth quartet became a quintet when trumpeter Leon Calvert was added. Mac's Rehearsal Rooms, 44, Windmill Street, (where the Moffat Club had been), became the first venue operating on Thursday and Saturday nights. Entry was by descending a wooden staircase to a cramped low ceilinged room with a bandstand at one end. It was dimly lit with with bare light bulbs with a few battered sofas. Only bebop was played - fierce and urgent music! The early months of the Eleven saw the highest peak of enthusiasm in the history of British modern jazz. The jazzmen continued to listen and study as many records of Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie and Miles Davis that they could get hold of. Broadcasts, recordings, and concerts came in quick succession and public acclaim was such as to force a move within a few months to much larger premises at 50, Carnaby Street, satisfying the legions of fans coming from all over the country to the by now famous Club 11. It was now operating six days a week in the evening and was open in the afternoon as a meeting point for musicians. At this point Johnny Dankworth left to form his Seven taking Joe Muddel with him, and Harry Morris also quit. This is our website This is our InstagramThis is our Facebook group

Merry Christmas! Today, let's dive into a celebration of festive joy. In this podcast I share some tips, advice, and the unveiling of the Nice and Naughty list of 2023. On the Nice list, we honour the great musicians we lost this year. These include a diverse range from Tony Bennett, Burt Bacharach, David Crosby, Gordon Lightfoot, and the legendary Jeff Beck. I recall the awe-inspiring performance by Jeff at Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club which left a powerful mark on me when I first embarked on my guitar teaching journey. Also on the Nice list is the incredible Jamie Andreas, the dedicated guitar teachers around the globe, and, of course, you!  However, let's not overlook the Naughty list, where I candidly share a famous name who has earned a spot on my not-so-favourable roster. We'll also delve into the enchanting realm of guitar-playing gifts, exploring both the thoughtful presents and the quirky offerings that our families love to surprise us with. Beyond that, we'll take a glimpse into the future, discussing the exciting prospects awaiting us in 2024. I'll be sharing some cool stuff and insights, urging you to start contemplating and planning ahead for 2024 to ensure it becomes the absolute best year you can imagine! Nigel Kennedy remains the best selling violinist of all time with a repertoire that spans jazz, classical, rock, klezmer and more. Ahead of his four night residency at Ronnie Scott's in London this week, Nigel Kennedy and cellist Beata Urbanek-Kalinowska join us in the Front Row studio to perform two reworkings of pieces by Ryuichi Sakamoto and the Polish film score composer, Krzysztof Komeda. Author Christine Coulson discusses her novel ‘One Woman Show' written entirely through the medium of art gallery labels – and why we should be looking for longer at the paintings themselves. She's joined by Dr Catherine McCormack, an independent curator and lecturer at Sotheby's Art Institute, who reveals more about how labels have changed over the years and provide valuable context for visitors to galleries and museums. New figures compiled exclusively for Front Row reveal that 65,000 items are currently missing from museums around the world and listed on the Art Loss Register. Carolyn Atkinson goes on the trail of one of those missing artworks, a painting stolen during a brazen art heist in 1989, that has just been returned to a Glasgow museum. Jodie Knight is a songwriter, vocalist and producer from Glasgow, Scotland now based in London. Her music draws influences from artists such as Chelsea Cutler, Ben Howard, and Holly Humberstone - very lyrically driven songs with strong, emotional melodies. In 2018 she opened for Rick Astley on 2 nights of his UK tour, and in 2022 she opened for the Scotland V Argentina game at Murrayfield Stadium (67,000). She has supported Texas in Quaglino's in London, played a sold out Sofar Sounds in The Ministry & performed at the infamous Ronnie Scott's Jazz Bar in 2023. In 2021 she graduated from Sir Paul McCartney's performing arts university LIPA, with a first class honours degree in songwriting & production and since then has used her skills to work with producers and writers from all over the world. “Jodie Knight is an expert at whether it's her own sad girl kind of pop, or whether she's supplying a vocal feature on a huge, huge dance banger. She has proven time and time again how versatile her voice is and I reckon in a couple of years time she's going to be one of BBC Introducing's major new success stories.” - Phoebe & Shereen, BBC Introducing Scotland.

Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth interview with Polly Gibbons, Renowned Jazz Singer / Songwriter About Harvey's guest: Today's guest, Polly Gibbons, is an internationally renowned singer from England who's rich, powerful, soulful voice delivers a unique jazz fusion that incorporates her R & B, gospel, jazz, funk and blues influences.    She's been twice-nominated as "Best Jazz Vocalist" by the BBC and Jazz FM, and the London Sunday Times described her jazz vocals as “vintage R&B with shades of Aretha Franklin”.  With her raw, smouldering voice that's full of heat, she conquered the London jazz scene at the age of 17.    And since then, she's become a regular at the legendary jazz club, Ronnie Scott's in London.  She's performed at Royal Albert Hall, opening for George Benson and Gladys Knight, and in 2018 she had a residency at New York's legendary Birdland Jazz Club.  She's performed on tour across the USA, Europe and Asia, from Java Jazz in Indonesia to the Montreal Jazz Festival and the Pittsburgh Jazz Festival.    In 2014, renowned producer George Klabin signed her to his record label, Resonance Records in Los Angeles, where she's recorded 3 highly acclaimed albums: “Many Faces of Love”, “Is it Me?”, and “All I Can Do”.  On June 30, she'll be releasing her 9th studio album entitled, “As It Is”, containing 10 original songs composed by our guest, who not only produced the album – she accompanied herself at the piano, supported by a great team of musicians.  The songs on the album feature heartfelt stories of personal struggle and resilience, with magnificent vocals, always characterized by this brilliant singer's wit and grace.   In describing this woman's voice, we need go no further than Peter Quinn of Jazzwise Magazine, who proclaimed her “a truly exceptional, once-in-a-generation talent, possessing a voice of such sizzling intensity and raw emotion, that you could fry an egg on it.” For more interviews and podcasts go to: https://www.harveybrownstoneinterviews.com/ To see more about Polly Gibbons, go to:https://www.pollygibbons.com/ https://www.facebook.com/pollygmusic/https://twitter.com/PollyGMusichttps://www.instagram.com/PollyGMusic/https://www.youtube.com/@PollyGmusichttps://open.spotify.com/artist/5HHILDuntfU7shOCmCECyF?si=B5GiF9l8TvKUWuLe7ngokA&nd=1https://soundcloud.com/pollygibbonsofficial #PollyGibbons  #harveybrownstoneinterviews

As you'll hear 1986 was an pretty incredible year for her, with the worldwide smash-hit of Don't Leave Me This Way! as well. She released her debut album, Sarah Jane Morris in March 1989, receiving great critical acclaim and selling over 100,000 copies. The second single Me And Mrs Jones attained cult status as the BBC banned it for its lesbian implications.Sixteen solo albums later, pop stardom on the continent, and a diverse set of musical collaborations on record, film and stage, Sarah Jane continues to steer her unorthodox career to greater heights. In the early 1990s, Paul Weller handed her a tune called Leaves Around the Door which she added to her live setlist, including for a performance captured on her Blue Valentine LIVE at Ronnie Scott's album. You may well recognise the song under the name A Year Late which Paul himself recorded and released later on as the b-side to You Do Something To Me)In another lovely Weller connection, in 2021, Sarah Jane recorded a new album called Let The Music Play, with the Italian producer Papik. Both artists chose songs from the 80s and rearranged them with a jazz/bosa/soul vibe. On the album, you'll find a stunning cover of You're The Best Thing by The Style Council along with songs from artists as diverse as Prefab Sprout, Barry White, Todd Rundgren, Simply Red and Everything But The Girl.

Last November I had the absolute pleasure and privilege to interview my dear friend and vocal powerhouse, Carol Grimes. In this interview we explore her decades spanning career paying particular attention to her broad range of singing styles and genres. The following, which I took from the Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club website in London, gives you a bit more of an inkling of her stature as a singer and the deep respect she commands as a vocalist, especially in the UK music scene.  Enjoy! Carol Grimes is one of the finest singers in British music. Her deeply personal project, 'The Singer's Tale', is an autobiographical show combining theatre, music and a grooving band!  The show weaves its stories, sometimes shady, mad and bad, but with music and song at their heart. Street Busker to Ronnie Scotts, from Notting Hill to Nashville and Memphis to San Francisco from Hackney to Texas and Eastern Europe but always returning to London. This raw, in your face, sublime performer takes you with her on a musical journey through her extraordinary life.   CAROL GRIMES A much-loved performer infusing folk, blues and jazz, came to the notice of the public when she joined the band Delivery in 1969 and recorded one album before departing for a solo career. Her debut solo album, Warm Blood (1974), was recorded with members of Area Code 615 and the Average White Band. She recorded her second album in Memphis, Tennessee, with the Brecker Brothers, Donald "Duck" Dunn, and The Memphis Horns. She founded the band Eyes Wide Open in 1984. Her career expanded into teaching and working in musical theatre. In the 1990s, she worked with the choir The Shout. As you can see below, in Carol's own words, she has been, and continues to be so much more:   “My name is Carol Grimes. I have been singing for my supper since the late 1960s. I began as a young, nervous Busker and fell in love with singing. Over time I became a Singer-Songwriter, Performance Poet, Voice Movement Therapist and Musical Director, founding the Sing for Joy Choirs in London, for people with neurological and other conditions and directed them for many years. I have recorded in the UK, USA, Sweden, The Isle of Jura and Poland. I became angry, seeing injustice, poverty and cruelty all around me and became an activist. The first Musician to step up for Rock against Racism, Sexism, Reclaim the night, singing for the striking Miners, the fire service, the Brunswick Women and refugee centres. In my life, I performed both in the UK and Internationally with my own Music with wonderful musicians and for Contemporary composers such as Orlando Gough, who directed The Shout, a contemporary opera, theatre company touring internationally with them for 12 years. From Japan to South Africa Canada and the USA and beyond, including performing at the Albert Hall in the Proms as a soloist - Blimey! I had my first book ‘The Singers Tale,' published in 2018 and many songs and poems published, recorded and performed over the years. I love writing as much as I love music. For more information, click on my Blog. The Singers Tale https://wordpress.com/posts/carolgrimes.com  also on Amazon Carol Grimes The Singers Tale, where there are some lovely reviews. Michael Mwenso was born in Freetown, Sierra Leone but spent his teenage years hanging out at the legendary jazz club Ronnie Scott's in London where he was exposed to musicians such as Betty Carter, Elvin Jones, Ray Brown and Cedar Walton. In his youth, Mwenso started honing his talents as a trombonist, singer and performer playing in swing bands, reggae and Afrobeat horn sections. Mwenso's talent as a performer caught the attention of many, which subsequently led him to meet James Brown who allotted space for him to sing and dance at his London shows. In 2012, friend and jazz musician Wynton Marsalis brought Mwenso to New York City to serve as curator and programming associate at Jazz at Lincoln Center where he also booked nightly sets at Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola. Over the next few years, Mwenso also booked throughout the institution at large. Through these performances at Dizzy's, Mwenso began to collaborate with a wide variety of Juilliard trained musicians that soon became known as The Shakes. This unique group of global artists presents music that merges entertainment and artistry through African and Afro-American music. In addition, Mwenso continues to break new ground as a cultural ambassador and artist in residence at various universities. Driven by Mwenso's deep ancestral understanding of the African-American music tradition, his role at these Universities is to not only teach numerous classes on Black music but grow the arts scene within their local community while creating more programming focusing on Black artists. Through this work, Mwenso has partnered with Penn State University, Georgia Tech, Miami University, University at Buffalo and Sonoma State University as a guest professor and cultural ambassador of Black music. Michael is a sought-after cultural curator as well as a master at distributing the spiritual nutrition inherent in Black music with Electric Root, the mission-driven company he co-leads with Jono Gasparro. The Third Story Podcast with Leo Sidran

Singer Stacey Kent says she tends to be attracted to the “feeling of unrest,” and she thinks that her fans like to feel it too. Over the course of a 30 year career that has produced over 20 albums (including  including the Grammy-nominated Breakfast On The Morning Tram), Stacey has mined that feeling again and again in different ways.  Maybe she understands how to express the complicated emotions around identity, romance, displacement and longing because she has lived them so fully herself. Raised in New Jersey, Stacey moved to England for graduate school. Almost immediately she met saxophonist Jim Tomlinson and the two set out together to build a life both personal and professional.  As Stacey describes it, meeting Jim was a major inflection point in her life and it's clear that the relationship between the two is at the center of the story. Eventually, they befriended the Japanese born British novelist Kazuo Ishiguro, which has led to an ongoing creative partnership between Tomlinson and Ishiguro who compose original songs for Stacey's repertoire.  In this conversation, recorded on location at Ronnie Scott's jazz club in London we talk about why she's a fatalist, escaping from New Jersey and from the bounds of category, crossing borders (in many senses), and her latest release Songs From Other Places.
