Tonight's Jazz Feature spotlights the late and deeply missed vibraphonist/marimbaist Bobby Hutcherson. This group was led by Hutcherson after the breakup of the ground breaking Bobby Hutcherson/ Harold Land Quintet. Bobby continued his innovative ways and formed this band of mainly San Francisco based players. Their sound was more airy and floating and lighter but no less compelling. Bobby brought in some of the positive aspects of "fusion Jazz" that prevailed in the early 70's but kept the tradition of Jazz happening. He also divided his time between the vibraphone (it has metal bars) and the marimba (it has wooden bars). which delivered an interesting contrast. Tenor and soprano saxophonist Manny Boyd added to the great sound of this band. George Cables is on electric and acoustic piano, James Leary 111 is on bass and contributes the bulk of the compositions here,. On drums is the great Eddie Marshall and Kenneth Nash on percussion. This fine album delivers a variety of great moods. The album was recorded in San Francisco in February of 1976. It was issued on Blue Note Records and called "Waiting". It was definitely worth waiting for....so enjoy it tonight;.

Альбом продолжает Why Not? ©️ 2023 Smoke Sessions Eddie Henderson - trumpet Donald Harrison - alto saxophone George Cables - piano & Fender Rhodes Gerald Cannon - bass Lenny White - drums Mike Clark - drums on "Scorpio Rising" Recorded on September 13, 2022 at Sear Sound Studio C, New York City Produced by Paul Stache & Damon Smith Recorded, Mixed & Mastered by Chris Allen Assisted by Andrew Kochinka СЛУШАТЬ АЛЬБОМ - https://album.link/i/1695966843 Предыдущий альбом Shuffle and Deal - https://t.me/discor/5715 Лучший трек альбома в плей-листе JAZZ по-русски 7 на AppleMusic и Spotify Поставь лайк ❤️ и подпишись на канал JAZZ по-русски https://t.me/discor #jazz --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/konstantins/message

After more that 30 years as an omnipresent side man on the NYC scene, trumpeter John Bailey decided it was time to step out as a leader so in 2018 he recorded his first record, In Real Time. This was followed in 2020 with Can You Imagine, and now, in 2023, he has released Time Bandits, with George Cables, Scott Colley, and Victor Lewis. In this episode of LINER NOTES John talks about his music and the patient path that led to his first recording as a leader.

Hailed by the New York Times as “a tenor saxophonist with an enigmatic, elegant and harddriving style,” JD Allen is a bright light on today's international jazz scene. His unique and compelling voice on the instrument – the result of a patient and painstaking confrontation with the fundamentals of the art – has earned Allen years of critical attention signaling his ascension to the upper ranks of the contemporary jazz world. Originally from Detroit, Allen's apprenticeship, anchored by his lengthy tenure with Betty Carter, occurred largely in New York, where he worked with legends Lester Bowie, George Cables, Ron Carter, Louis Hayes, Frank Foster Big Band, Winard Harper, Dave Douglas, Cindy Blackman, Butch Morris, David Murray, Wallace Roney, Rufus Reid and Geri Allen.

Billy Harper has had a pretty incredible career. He was a member of Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers in 1968. He played with Max Roach. He was part of the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Big Band and the Gil Evans big band, and because of those connections he got to play on a Louis Armstrong album. He was on Lee Morgan's final studio album, recorded in 1971. And he's had a solo career since the early Seventies, making legendary albums like Capra Black for the Strata-East label and Black Saint for…well, for Black Saint. It was their first release, and they named the label after it!Since about 2008, Harper has been a member of the Cookers, a group led by trumpeter David Weiss that also features Eddie Henderson on trumpet, Donald Harrison or Craig Handy on alto sax, George Cables — who's been on this podcast — on piano, Cecil McBee on bass, and Billy Hart on drums. All of those guys have long careers as leaders, but when they come together, playing music from their back catalogs and new material, they're really amazing. I've seen them live twice and it's just astonishing to watch absolute masters get up there and deliver the way they do.I really had a good time talking to Billy Harper. In this interview, we talk about the Texas tenor sax tradition, we talk about his time with Lee Morgan, we talk about the Cookers, about his solo work, about how to teach improvisation, and a bunch of other things. Pioneers were prevalent in the 50s and 60s. Guys that built up their chops to be able to play at the spur of the moment in any setting with any players. This pioneer mentality was helped by venues, multiple venues in every major city so accessibility was not a problem. The pioneers of music were unafraid of pursuing odd rhythms and combining instruments that wouldn't necessarily be commonplace in a square setting. My guest was one such pioneer, with Charles Lloyd they became the first American Jazz outfit to perform in the Soviet Union, he was a favorite of Joe Henderson in a group that featured the likes of Woody Shaw, George Cables and Lenny White. He was also one of the founding members of the eclectic group the fourth way with Mike Nock, Michael White and legendary Bay Area drummer Eddie Marshall. He has been an educator at the Berkelee School of music and LIU and is a continual force in the field of music. Ron McClure it's a pleasure to welcome you to the Jake Feinberg Show.

Timeless trio at Made In New York Jazz Club in Park Slope Brooklyn from 2020
Live broadcast from Queens New York from June 2019
Night and Day (1991) del pianista George Cables. Occasionally on the Journey I wonder why I pay homage to those players who I never met, or saw play. To know authenticity when you never experienced it. I have interviewed Ira Gitler, Herb Wong and Nat Hentoff on this journey. Guys who produced records, wrote linear notes and filled in the human with the being. I interviewed Fred Taylor who among other things ran the Jazz Workshop and Paul's Mall which was a duel musical outlet for psychedelia and jazz. And now we get to North Beach circa '72. A gentlemen by the name of Todd Barkan takes over a club next to the police station called it the Keystone Korner. 750 villeo street... He creates a club that provided accessibility to great leaders for anyone who appreciated authenticity and love. He was a musical match maker who cared about the musicians idiosyncrasies and how to fit personalities and make them work. He charged $3.00 during the week to see Cannonball Adderley $3.25 on the weekends. The entire club permeated with the warm home cooking of Ora Harris. For those who wanted to roast a joint there were ionizers on the ceiling that sucked the smoke right up so that it would not bother the people around them. Now, this establishment was already stepped in psychedelic blues like Bloomfield and Nick Gravenites Jerry Garcia and Merl Saunders. And now the wheels turn again. Merl's cousin was Eddie Moore who played in organ trios with Merl in the Fillmore District where Calvin Keys would sometimes play the breakfast set. Calvin Keys said "if you weren't playing the Keystone when you were in San Francisco then you weren't playin." And Eddie Marshall came out because of the 4th way and started wearing his dashiki's with James Leary and Herbie Lewis guys who made up a rhythm section with vibist Bobby Hutcherson. Carl Burnett would come in and smell Ora's banana bread when he played with George Cables and Freddie Hubbard. Rasaan Roland Kirk (a boyhood friend of Barkan's) and Grover Washington Jr. Played benefit concerts in Oakland to raise money so the Keystone could obtain a liquor license. Understanding true freedom of expression, a player in his own right and Someone who validates what this radio host so desires Todd Barkan welcome to the JFS. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/jake-feinberg/support
At times in life you feel adrift. Unable to harness the love and the passion that reins inside. When you begin to evolve in any art you start on that far away Oregon Hill with a Hawk flying overhead. Knowing that John Mclaughlins guitar might swoop up and under and around my guests bass lines. Slowly you build security in your own voice and sound so that your called upon to bluegrass country, to the Fillmore West, to Bearsville, to Europe, to a land of sunshine. My guest today is a master of all trades when it comes to music. A cat who burns creation and passion and urgency into an amalgamation of paradigms that provide a natural high. The live experience of playing three sets of music night after night after night with Miles Davis. My guest was also a prolific studio musician at a time when identities were created, linear notes were written, pictures were taken and barriers had not gone up. My guest Has played with Bonnie Raitt and Phil Wilson, Maria Muldaur, Nick Brignola, Roland Hannah and and with the perfect balance of mathematics and soul.

He’s never crossed over in any way, because he’s never really tried to. He’s jazz to the core of his bones, and he’s had an incredible career both as a leader and as a sideman. He started out at the very end of the Sixties and really made his mark in the Seventies, when he played with Joe Henderson, Woody Shaw, Dexter Gordon, Freddie Hubbard, Art Pepper, and a million other people. He’s recorded dozens of albums as a leader, and played on over 200 albums as a sideman. These days, he’s a member of the Cookers, the all-star band led by trumpeter David Weiss that also includes Eddie Henderson, Billy Harper, Cecil McBee and Billy Hart, among others. He also leads his own trio with bassist Essiet Essiet and drummer Victor Lewis. He recently suffered a serious health issue, which resulted in him having his left leg amputated above the knee. We talk about that in this interview, as well as some of the people he’s played with over the years, how he chooses material — he writes a lot, but he plays a lot of standards as well — and much more. I hope you’ll enjoy this conversation, and come away with an interest in a guy whose name isn’t nearly as well known as it should be. This great band was and has been somewhat overlooked when one reassesses the long career of vibist Bobby Hutcherson. This group was a working band made up of four core members: Bobby Hutcherson on vibes and marimba, Manny Boyd on soprano and tenor saxophone and flute, James Leary III on bass and Eddie Marshall on drums. The band as you might have gathered was based in SanFrancisco. For special gigs and recording sessions the basic quartet was augmented by adding piano, usually George Cables and percussion, usually Kenneth Nash to the mix. That's who will be heard on this date called "Waiting".There are seven tunes here, all originals and five are written by bassist James Leary who not only is a powerhouse on bass but a fine composer as well. Bobby Hutcherson wrote two and composed what he called the "sweet spot" of the date, a composition dedicated to John Coltrane called "Searchin' The Trane". This band employed many facets of music and yet was a pure Jazz group. Their sound was very contemporary and if you didn't know that all of this was recorded in 1976, one would think it was done yesterday. "Waiting" is worth waiting for......enjoy!
This great band comprising a groups of living veterans of Jazz music is one of the great working bands of today. Working bands are rare in this day and age but this band tours the world playing in clubs and doing concerts. They play a great repertoire that comes from the members of the band and they have a wonderful collective spirit much like Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers from yesteryear. The organizer and the "brains" behind the band is it's youngest member, trumpeter David Weiss. The personal are all long time veterans of the contemporary Jazz scene of the last 60 odd years. Along with Weiss on trumpet is another major voice, Eddie Henderson, Tenor saxophonist Billy Harper is a powerhouse as is it's newest member New Orleans born alto saxophone master Donald Harrison. Piano great George Cables is superb and bassist Cecil McBee has walked with the giants of Jazz as has drummer Billy Hart. The Cookers are a real band and are living proof that Jazz music can still swing, sound fresh and have real blues inflection and not sound cold and academic. These men play from their minds and their souls. "Time and Time Again" is their latest musical statement and it's worth your time.
When you hear the alto saxophone of Art Pepper, there is no doubt as to who it is. Art's sound and emotional directness hits hard and as someone put it, "Art plays for his life". Art's life was a convoluted mess and interrupted by long prison sentences for drug use but Pepper always played his best, no matter the circumstances. This album called "The Trip" was made in 1976 after his release from rehab and his life for a while became productive and stable. Art's wish was fulfilled by the people on this date, three men who he loved and wished to work with. George Cables was his favorite pianist, Art called George "Mr.Beautiful". Bassist David Williams and especially drummer Elvin Jones lived up to Art's high standards. Art worked hard to make this date great and brought in 3 original works including the haunting title track..."The Trip". One tune each by trumpeters Joe Gordon and Woody Shaw. The beautiful ballad high point is Michel Legrand's lovely "The Summer Knows". Art Pepper among his other attributes was a superb ballad player. This album is a keeper and one of Art Pepper's finest..........check out "The Trip"

A series of great unreleased recordings from Pepper's final tour of Japan in November 1981 with Pepper on alto saxophone,George Cables on piano, David Williams on bass and Carl Burnett on drums.Art Pepper's favourite quartet.THIS IS THE FULL SHOW! THE PREVIOUS ONE WAS CUT SHORT AT 3 HOURS.
These are some previously unreleased performances by the great Art Pepper on his last tour of Japan in November 1981 about 6 months before his death in June of 1982. Art was aware of his somewhat fragile health and at this time was literally playing for his life. This tour was with his favourite quartet which included pianist George Cables, bassist David Williams and drummer Carl Burnett. Four great performances are featured here the first being the long and intense "Make A List, Make A Wish" a Pepper opus. Next is his favourite balled "Everything Happens To Me" followed by the up tempo "Allen's Alley" (aka "Wee") written by Allen Eager. The final piece is a blues created by Art appropriately called "Arthur's Blues". All of these performances were recorded in various locations in Japan between November 13 and 24, 1981. Intense and beautiful...the one and only Art Pepper.
George Cables is a superb pianist, an outstanding composer with a real gift for melody. He was born in Brooklyn, grew up in Queens. He started piano in grade school, and liked taking traditional lessons and studying classical music right away. “I did like the piano. I had a crush on my piano teacher,” he said. Cables studied classical piano at the Manhattan High School for the Performing Arts, and found a way to incorporate jazz into his afternoon commute home. “So I had to take a subway and then a bus. So I get off the subway to get the bus, and the pizza joint there — I’d stop in and there was a jukebox in this place,” he said. “The only thing that was remotely close to jazz was a Wynton Kelly cut called ‘Little Tracy’, with a little calypso. And I loved that; I played it every day.” As soon as Cables turned 18 years old, and a little before, he would go to The Five Spot, a lot. “I could see Thelonious Monk, and in those days he was there maybe four or five or six months at a time,”
This great band was based in San Francisco and was the brain child of tenor and soprano saxophonist Mel Martin who organized this band in the early 1980's. Mel is a well known teacher, lecturer, and a player who among others has worked with Dizzy Gillespie, Freddie Hubbard, Benny Carter and so many others plus pop groups like Azteca, Tower of power and Cold Blood. Mel picked some of the very best players in the Bay Area like the great John Handy on alto saxophone. John had worked with Charles Mingus and Randy Weston and led his own groups and was an icon in San Francisco by the time this record was made in February 1984. Warren Gale is on trumpet and Gale should be more widely recognized as he is a great player with a healthy brassy sound. George Cables is on piano and there isn't much more to say about a guy who is one of the world's greatest piano players. Frank Tusa from the east coast had played with Dave Liebman's Lookout Farm and the late Eddie Marshall on drums had worked with just about everyone in the Bay Area. Two of the tunes are by Mel Martin (the opener and the closer) one is a wonderful arrangement of Tadd Dameron's "On a Misty Night". Frank Tusa wrote one. Eddie Marshall also wrote one and Mel Martin arranged two great tunes by Thelonious Monk called "Evidence" and "Monk's Mood". Bebop and Beyond is a great band and deserves to be heard so here it is!

Today we will feature John Handy, musician, composer, well known for his songs: Hard Work, Spanish Lady, Dancy Dancy, If Only We Knew, & Body & Soul. "Jazz encyclopedias list John Handy as an alto saxophonist who plays the tenor, saxello, baritone, clarinet, oboe and vocals. He is actually a consummate world musician and teacher who has devoted his life to using music to elevate the human spirit. His soulful and fiery saxophone style is instantly recognizable to generations of jazz fans world-wide. As a performer and composer he continues to sweep audiences into ecstasy with his vast range of creative, emotional, and technical inventiveness. With a superb knowledge and practical experience with music of several cultures, he fuses, with each selection, a musical genre that is coherent, provocative, logical, and enjoyable. Known most readily as a saxophonist in jazz quartet and quintet settings, John Handy is also featured in solo, duets, and large ensembles ranging in size from big bands to concert bands, symphony orchestras, vocal groups, and choirs. As a singer, he brings a kind of storytelling narrative to the blues that is entertaining, educational, and moving; while his "up tempo" scat vocals could be compared to the best scat singers anywhere. He sings ballads with inventiveness that is rare among singers" (JohnHandy.com) He is going to be performing this weekend at the Healdsburg Jazz Festival.
