With the NFL combine now just a few days away, we thought it might be a good idea to throw out a few names we’re looking forward to watching and we think the Jets brass should be too. https://api.spreaker.com/v2/episodes/70201742/download.mp3 Of course there are the big names such as edge rushers David Bailey and Rueben Bain along with linebacker Arvell Reese and safety Caleb Downs.  But who are some of the prospects who aren’t being mocked to the Jets by every pundit, fan or insider?  Let’s take a look. QB Drew Allar, Penn State: Allar is a tough watch when  you turn on the film.  Sloppy mechanics lead to often wildy inconsistent play at quarterback.  However, Frank Reich is said to be looking to land a tall QB who can work from the pocket which does describe Allar.  If Reich believes he can fix what’s wrong with Allar, he may be a developmental QB the Jets target. QB Taylen Green, Arkansas: We loved Green coming in to this season as we anticipated another step forward in his growth, but like Allar, his consistency left plenty to be desired.  Green’s footwork will often get sloppy and he tends to leave his feet when throwing the ball down the field for no apparent reason.  But he’s a QB who has what both Reich and head coach Aaron Glenn covet at the postion.  Reich wants a tall QB with a strong arm, while Glenn wants a QB who can beat you with his legs.  Green can do both when he’s on. RB Emmett Johnson, Nebraska: With Breece Hall’s future up in the air and Braelon Allen coming off of a major injury, might the Jets look at a running back?  If so, Johnson should be under consideration.  His ability to fit through small holes while evading multiple defenders gives you a guy who can take the smallest crease and grab you 7 or 8 yards in a spot where most backs might give you 1 or 2. WR KC Concepcion, Texas A&M: Concepcion has struggled with drops over the course of his college career, but he also brings electric speed and versatility to the position.  A guy who would serve primarily as a slot receiver, we’d be willing to bet Concepcion could be effective on the boundary as well.  Expect Concepcion to test extremely well this week. WR Brenen Thompson, Ole Miss: Expected to be the fastest player in Indy, Thompson’s size will scare some team’s off as he’s currently listed at 5′ 9”, but his play making ability will get him plenty of attention.  Adding Thompson to any offense will bring considerable juice. TE RJ Maryland, SMU: We loved Maryland’s game back in 2024 with SMU before he suffered a season-ending injury after seven games.  He’s probably one of the bigger “under the radar” prospects who can boost his stock in Indy with a strong showing. OG Chase Bisontis, Texas A&M: Vega Ioane is a guy who should be at the top of the Jets options with pick sixteen, but if they pass in that spot and are still looking to add a guard, Bisontis in round 2 wouldn’t be a bad idea.  Expect a solid showing on the bench press. C Logan Jones, Iowa: The Jets should be looking to upgrade at center with such a deep class and in all honesty, Jones would be our first choice.  The Iowa product showed great movement on film over the past couple of seasons so we expect a solid showing for all 32 teams at the combine.  His teammate Beau Stephens, a guard at Iowa, should be another option for the Jets in the middle rounds. DT Nick Barrett, South Carolina: The Jets will need to beef up their interior defensive line and Barrett is an powerful, explosive option.  Very curious to see how he fares on the vertical and broad jumps along with bench press. There's a new episode of The Business of Open Source today! It's been a while. I talked with Anais Concepcion about a program she's been testing at Grist to give free activation codes for the enterprise version of Grist to individuals and small businesses that have a revenue under $1 million. The program has been in place for 5 months, and Anais came on the show to talk about both the strategy behind the program as well as some preliminary results. The strategy comes down to shifting the perception of Grist Open Source and Grist Enterprise. The goal, Anais says, is to make the ecosystem consider Grist Enterprise the ‘default' version of Grist, rather than the other way around. In fact, she's considering renaming Grist Enterprise to just “Grist” to reinforce the idea that it is not the ‘special' version of Grist, but the default version. There were other strategic goals, too. One is to get more feedback on the ‘enterprise' features, another is to avoid nickel-and-diming individual users while making sure that big companies are paying. The results so far have been interesting. The biggest concrete result has been in partnership relationships; it's easier for small consulting / development shops to get access to the full Grist and to then resell it to their clients. There haven't been been any signed deals yet as a result of this dynamic, but there are companies in discussions with the Grist sales team that probably wouldn't have happened without the program… it will be interesting to see what happens as the program matures. After we turned off the recording, we had an interesting discussion about pricing as well; at Open Source Founders Summit Anais is going to do a workshop on pricing strategy. Not how much to charge, but what to charge for (consumption, seats, etc), how to set pricing anchors, and more. Join us in May if that's interesting to you!

Alexander Concepcion first discovered his love for books through his Cuban-American parents in Miami, Florida. After burning his college diplomas, he moved to Texas and became one of the state's top-producing—and only taco-themed—independent real estate brokers, all while working part-time. In the summer of '75 it was becoming clear that something special was happening in Boston. A rookie centerfielder was having a season for the ages. Fred Lynn would lead the Sox to the pennant behind one of the greatest, if not THE greatest rookie season in baseball history. The first year sensation would become the first player to win Rookie of the Year and MVP in the same season. It culminated in a World Series that 50 years later is considered to be one of the all-time classics with the Sox and the Reds providing thrill after thrill that saw reach a 7th game after Carlton Fisk's legendary home run over the Monster and off the Pole in left to win Game 6. It was widely considered the sports story of the year with future Hall of Fame players throughout both rosters. The star power of Rose, Rice, Yaz, Morgan, Fisk and Perez along with Tiant, Lynn, Concepcion, Foster, and Griffey was off the charts… and the Big Red Machine finally prevailed in that game 7 to win the Series. That was one to remember… the other big story was one we'd like to forget… The Match Race between Foolish Pleasure and the great filly, Ruffian was the talk of the horse racing world and the excitement at Belmont Park was similar to when Secretariat was going for the triple crown at the same track two years earlier…  After a blistering 1/4 mile, Ruffian had just taken the lead by a neck over the Kentucky Derby winner… in fact, that first 1/2 mile was the only time in Ruffians career she ever trailed in a race… she was running with the boys and holding her own… when she suffered a catastrophic leg injury breaking two bones in her right leg. The great horse continued to run for a bit even on the broken leg as her jockey Jacinto Vasquez tried to bring her to a stop. The jubilant atmosphere came to a sudden stop at the race track and nationwide as the TV audience realized what had just taken place… there was no way to describe it, yet that was the job of Dave Johnson, the track announcer at Belmont… Even he was at a loss for words as the ambulance made its way on to the track to tend to the fallen horse… she would be carted away, and after multiple attempts to save her, the great Ruffian was finally put to rest. Johnson was off the next two days, but when he returned to work on Wednesday he said there was one word that described everything…  “Crying” Everyone was crying. Writers, trainers, guys in the stall… women in the offices… everywhere you went, people were at a loss… In a career that would span over 50 years, it was as tough a day as Johnson can recall. Now 84, the legendary Horse Racing announcer is still as energetic and exuberant when it comes to the sport he loves. On the Past Our Prime podcast, Johnson shares inside details on that horrific July day when Ruffian rode for the final fatal time… He talks about how the atmosphere at the track was electric and how he thought Ruffian would remain undefeated after beating Foolish Pleasure… but it didn't happen the way anybody thought it would. Johnson also reflects on the recent passing of his good friend, D. Wayne Lukas and gives personal insights to what made him such a great trainer… and an even better person.
