Entrepreneurs, too, walk through a hellscape of risk so they may create wealth, freedom and meaning. Survival First ushers in a new Renaissance by guiding modern Dantes through this hellscape.Survival First humanizes risk by discarding academic jargon and complex formulas for simple logic, emotional realism and the stories of ordinary entrepreneurs. Readers learn how to not merely confront risk but dance with it. Inside is the radical-yet-practical RDEE RISK formula—an eternally applicable framework for avoiding ruin and unlocking riches. Risk. Rancho La Concepcion is a realization of their combined dream to give back to the world by creating a sacred space for thoughtful travelers. The main reason to visit Rancho La Concepcion is the unparalleled stargazing, but the easy access to nature, miles of hiking trails, and slower pursuits like forest bathing, meditation, and yoga are equally compelling reasons to stay. I've stayed three times and shared the experience with my Slow Baja Vintage Expeditions. I appreciate the slow vibe and silence that envelop the property. On my next visit, I hope to get a glimpse of the local Condor population. I highly recommend their cottages. With prior notice, meals are available, and I can attest that Cesar is a fine cook. This week on The Business of Open Source, I spoke with Anais Concepcion and Paul Fitzpatrick , the co-CEO of Grist Labs and CTO of Grist Labs. We talked about managing growth of users versus growth of revenue, moving to an open source approach for technical, not technical, reasons, and open-source related product management questions for open source companies. Some really interesting themes we talked about:Moving from a SaaS first approach to also focusing on enterprise sales. Why they did that, what other sales channels that opened and what questions it also forced the company to addressUser personas versus buyer personasThe situations in which Grist is the best option — which incidentally I could not understand from the website or the project documentationThe relationship between the open source project and both enterprise sales and SaaS sign-ups. How open source has been critical for a strategic relationship Grist has with the French government, which has been important for increasing product development velocityGiving up ‘darlings' or features that they really want to develop but that they don't think would drive revenueThe difference Anais sees between running Grist and running non-open-source companies — one of the most interesting differences is that users often have a sense of ownership over the project that you just wouldn't see in a fully proprietary How open source true believers often work in large companies and control budgets, and should not be underestimated. Why trying to sell based on features — including telling yourself that if you just had one more feature, you'd unlock all the sales — was a big mistake. Are you struggling with price anchors fixed around zero dollars, or can't figure out how to manage the push and pull of developing open source and building a business? You might want to work with me.

Most Penn State grads have their pick of investment banking jobs and an easy career path practically laid out before them.    And they wind up miserable anyway.    Alexander Concepcion said f*ck that as soon as he graduated. After ceremoniously burning his college degrees, he moved to Austin, Texas, with no plan. Fast-forward to now, and he's a seven-figure entrepreneur who truly believes owning a business is the only path to personal sovereignty and a lifetime of joy.       With a new book, Survival First: The Rebel Entrepreneur's Guide To Risk, Riches, and Immortality, coming out in the spring, could we book him on The Sweat Equity Startup to share his contrarian perspectives on business ownership and entrepreneurship?      PS: Preview the book here.    Alexander Concepcion's calls-to-action: website: www.survivalfirstbook.com business website: tacostreetlocating.com IG: alexander_themagnificent X: alexofaustin   Episode sponsored ⚡️  by Search-and-SEO-first optimized AI writer, ZUPYAK, promo discount coupon code -  ZUPYAK.COM  → promo code  → SWEAT   ⚡️  by no-code, drag-and-drop website builder, SQUARESPACE promo discount coupon code https://squarespacecircleus.pxf.io/sweatequity   ⚡️  by call tracking, CALL RAIL, promo discount coupon code https://bit.ly/sweatequitycallrail   ⚡️ by LINKEDIN PREMIUM promo discount coupon code - 2 months free! https://bit.ly/sweatequity-linkedin-premium   ---   Sweat Equity

This week's Misfit Entrepreneur is Alex Concepcion. Alex has a very interesting story, but let's just say that fate helped him find his way and part of that fate was never working for someone. As he'll share, it took him a while to find his way, but he did so in starting a niche high-end apartment location business called Taco Street Locating based out of Austin, Texas. Alex went from broke to having a business that pays him multiple 6-figures a year allowing to work when, where, and how he wants to and is he author of the forthcoming book, The Rebel Entrepreneur's Guide to Risk, riches, and Immortality – hearing that title, you can probably guess why I asked him to come in the show to share his journey and lessons learned. www.Survivalfirstbook.com Show Sponsors: Nuts.Com: Misfits, if you are looking for the highest quality snacks for you office or as gifts, look not further than Nuts.com!
