With the recent finale of the critically-acclaimed series, Better Call Saul, Marlee gathered some friends to discuss all the details. She is joined by friends of the show- screenwriter/comics writer, Blake Casselman, and Movies That Make Us podcast host, Tracy Mangum. They decided to not limit the discussion to just the final episode, but to also include some of their favorite moments, characters, and outfits throughout Better Call Saul and it's predecessor, Breaking Bad. Together, they appreciate what Vince Gilligan created: a masterfully written story spread between two TV series and a movie. You would not believe the number of details that were found to be interwoven. During your next binge, be sure to pay attention! It should go without saying that there are HEAVY SPOILERS throughout this podcast episode. In 1979, a 22 year old Frank Miller would begin what would end up being an historic run on the Marvel Comics title Daredevil. During his run, he would revolutionize the Matt Murdock/Daredevil character, as well as defining Wilson Fisk as his arch nemesis. Additionally, he would introduce The Punisher into the Daredevil mythos, and maybe one of his biggest contributions, he gave the world Elektra. His run would change Daredevil forever. Maybe even change the Marvel universe and comics forever. It all led up to a final multi part story - Born Again. Miller had actually left the series for a short time, but returned to write this final story that would forever leave its mark on the characters involved. Marvel Recently announced that they were bringing Charlie Cox back in a new 18 part Disney+ series called Born Again. On this episode of our show, we welcome special guest Blake Casselman. Blake is a local film maker. You can purchase or rent his film, Adopting Trouble, on Amazon now. He also heads up a local screenwriting group in Salt Lake City. Blake also works with the programming at FanX. We are so excited to have him on the show. The film we are discussing is the 1986 film The Mission. The film has a cast consisting of some current big name actors, including Robert De Niro, Jeremy Irons, and Liam Neeson. It chronicles the events of a Jesuit mission in South America that is under the control of Spanish Jesuit missionaries, but located in pro-slavery Portuguese territory. We discuss the powerful music, the beautiful cinematography, and the impactful story that has established this film as one that is studied in film schools throughout the country. Although a masterpiece in many ways, the film was a flop at the box office, and some critics and audiences struggled with it. Although a difficult story, it is also hopeful and inspirational. If it is one you haven’t seen, you need to watch it.What are your thoughts on The Mission? Let us know by sending your feedback to podcast@moviesthatmakeus.com. We would love to hear from you. Every so often a movie comes along that is not only highly entertaining but also full of wit and humor while touching on a sensitive (and dark) subject. Adopting Trouble is one of those movies. The film is a story about married couple Nick, an ex-con, and Maryanne, a devoted Christian, who are determined to start a family. It's soon discovered that they can’t due to medical reasons. To make matters worse, they are also unable to adopt because Nick is a convicted felon. Desperate to have children, they kidnap Andrea, a pregnant, career-driven, single woman scheduled to have an abortion, as part of a scheme to force her to have her baby for them. The writer, Blake Casselman, and the writer/director, Lee Gardner, of Adopting Trouble recently took some time out of their busy schedules to sit down with our panel and discuss the movie. Listen as they share behind the scenes stories, discuss the filmmaking process, and talk about what they hope to do with the film in the future. If you enjoy movies, or if you just want a good laugh, this is a conversation that you don't want to miss! Adopting Trouble won the highest Comedy Feature Film award at the 2016 WorldFest Houston International Film Festival and a Best Narrative Film Award at the Covellite International Film Festival in Montana so you know it's good. It is currently available to either rent or buy online. Visit Rare Legend Films website or the Adopting Trouble Facebook page for more information. Have you seen Adopting Trouble yet? What did you think of it? Send us an email to feedback@hopestrikesback.com) letting us know. You can also leave a comment below or message us on Twitter or Facebook. We’d love to hear your thoughts!
