Making a New Year's resolution is a great way to change something in your life for the better. Whether it's going to the gym, eating healthier, or saving more money New Year's seems to be an excellent jumping off point for many people to better themselves. Unfortunately, those who do resolve to make improvements, whether they be large or small, tend to give up after only a few weeks. In fact, according to U.S. News, approximately 80% of resolutions fail by the second week of February. The odds are definitely not in your favor.So what can you do? Obviously, if you're setting a New Year's resolution, there is something that you want to change. Well, that's where we come in. Seasonal Affective Disorder, sometimes known as SAD, and commonly called “seasonal depression,” is a type of depression that comes and goes with the seasons. It generally starts in the late fall or early winter and ends once spring and summer arrive. While depressive episodes linked to the summer do occur, they are much less common than winter episodes of SAD.If you’ve ever listened to our show, you know that our panelists are no stranger to depression. Sal Velluto first broke into comics drawing Power Pack for Marvel way back in 1988. Since then, he’s worked on a number of titles for the publisher including Moon Knight, The Silver Surfer, and a 32 issue run on Black Panther to name a few. He has also worked with a number of other publishers including Acclaim, CrossGen, and many others. Sal eventually landed at DC Comics where he helped create Justice League Task Force. He additionally also worked on various issues of Justice League of America and Justice Society of America as well as some occasional work on Aquaman and The Flash. Since 2007, he has been one of the main artists on The Phantom stories produced for the Swedish Fantomen comic book.Last September, Sal was at FanX 2018 in Salt Lake City and took a few minutes to chat with us. Spence Checketts is one of the 15 million Americans who struggles with an alcohol use disorder. As one of the hosts of "The Big Show" on 1280 The Zone in Salt Lake City, and as the voice of the Utah Jazz and Real Salt Lake pre, half, and post-game shows, it seemed like he had it all. But then one day, he made a bad decision that cost him almost everything. Spence recently took some time to chat with us regarding his struggles with alcohol addiction and what took place on that day that changed everything. In this honest and candid conversation, we discuss his journey from growing up in the NBA to his successful career in sports radio and how he's bouncing back from going from the highest of highs to the lowest of lows. Every so often a movie comes along that is not only highly entertaining but also full of wit and humor while touching on a sensitive (and dark) subject. Adopting Trouble is one of those movies. The film is a story about married couple Nick, an ex-con, and Maryanne, a devoted Christian, who are determined to start a family. It's soon discovered that they can’t due to medical reasons. To make matters worse, they are also unable to adopt because Nick is a convicted felon. Desperate to have children, they kidnap Andrea, a pregnant, career-driven, single woman scheduled to have an abortion, as part of a scheme to force her to have her baby for them. The writer, Blake Casselman, and the writer/director, Lee Gardner, of Adopting Trouble recently took some time out of their busy schedules to sit down with our panel and discuss the movie. It's been said that music can calm the savage beast. However, that quote is wrong. The actual quote comes from the play The Mourning Bride, by William Congreve is and says "music has charms to soothe a savage breast" meaning that music has the power to enchant even the roughest of people. Music is also an inspiring, powerful tool. From getting you pumped at the gym to helping set "the mood," music can be used to manipulate emotions and invoke specific feelings. Stan Lee, the legendary comic book writer, and creator passed away nearly a week ago, yet his legacy lives on. He was 95 years old, and in failing health, yet his death has shocked many and sent ripples throughout the world as those who were impacted by his life reflect on his legacy. While there's nothing that we can say that others haven't said already, Stan Lee has had a major impact on everything that we do here at Hope Strikes Back. And on this week's episode, we discuss his life and the impact that he had on not only comic books but the entire pop culture landscape. While we were there, we met some people from Camp Hobé, a summer camp for kids with cancer. We feel that this is a really good organization that could use your help. Merton hypothesized that individuals compare themselves with reference groups of people who occupy the social role to which the individual aspires. The winter of 1978 was not a good time for Star Wars fans. Star Wars had (mostly) left theaters and fans were wanting more. Hollywood executives knew this so they approached George Lucas with the idea of doing a television special. As a result, CBS bestowed upon fans one of the worst things in the history of awful on November 17 of that year: the Star Wars Holiday Special.The Star Wars Holiday Special is, for lack of a better word, special. While it does give us more of the characters that we know and love, it also gives us Chewbacca's family and a host of nightmare fuel. Having been bullied as a kid, anti-bullying is an issue that's very important to me. It's also one that's very important to actress Chase Masterson. You may know her as Leeta from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, or from one of her many other projects; however, she is also the founder of the Pop Culture Hero Coalition which works to educate and support children, teens, and adults to overcome bullying and social injustice, and to transform their struggles into strengths, using stories and characters from pop culture TV, film, and comics.Using the message of inclusion from Star Trek, the Pop Culture Hero Coalition strives to create, promote and foster a culture free from the injustice of bullying, cyberbullying, hate crimes, and inequality based on gender, race, religion, socioeconomic status, sexual identity or preference, physical disability, mental disability, learning disability, or any other perceived vulnerability.The issue of bullying in schools is widespread and devastating to students of all ages. According to StopBullying.gov, 28% of students in grades 6-12 have been bullied. Even more shocking is that 70.6% of students and 70.4% of school staff say that they have witnessed bullying. However, when bystanders intervene, bullying stops within 10 seconds 57% of the time.Thanks to a growing awareness of the problem of bullying, studies suggest that rates of bullying may be declining. For years, there have been critics who say that cinema is a dying art. In a 2016 interview, with the Associated Press, Martin Scorsese, the illustrious director of Taxi Driver, Goodfellas, and 2017 Oscar contender Silence, said movies aren’t what they used to be.“Cinema is gone,” Scorsese said. “The cinema I grew up with and that I’m making, it’s gone.”Certain members of our panel might agree with that statement. It used to be that you would go to the theater in November and December to see a high-quality film that would likely contend for numerous awards. If you wanted to watch a summer blockbuster, Memorial Day through August was your time. The rest of the year was filled with movies that were hit or miss. Occasional gems could often be found, but they were often the exception. Now, with new "franchise films" coming out every few months from Marvel, Disney, Warner Brothers, and other studios, moviegoers are having to be more and more selective about what they watch, and that's leaving a lot of really good films with little to no audience.Have any thoughts on the issue? Sometimes, despite your best intentions, things go horribly wrong. This episode is one of those times. Sure, our panelists wanted to discuss meaningful topics. They even started off discussing things like battling cancer and helping fight youth homelessness! Things could only be held together for so long though before they devolved into discussions about scurvy, what happens when you lose one sense, and bad movies from the 1980’s. We're sorry. There are also some important things that are taking place in the near future.One thing that just happened is the Covenant House Sleep Out: Stage and Screen in which $388,084 was raised to support homeless youth. The Sleep Out is a unique experience meant to encourage awareness, empathy, and understanding for the immeasurable odds that homeless young people overcome. Advocates throughout the United States and Canada accept the challenge to sleep outside for one night at Covenant House sites as well as in private backyards, school grounds, and community spaces. It’s about showing homeless youth unconditional love and absolute respect — demonstrating in word and action that someone cares about them. It's the American Cancer Society’s Big Dig and it's taking place Saturday, September 22, 2018, at the Utah State Fairpark. Hollywood seems to have issues. Specifically, Disney seems to have issues. Especially when it comes to Johnny Depp.City of Lies, Johnny Depp's next film, was recently pulled from release in the U.S. after Depp was sued by a location manager for punching him in the face. The movie was originally scheduled to hit theaters next month but is now delayed indefinitely. However, Disney doesn't seem to take issue with any of Depp's actions, including beating up his ex-wife, and is currently developing yet another Pirates of the Caribbean sequel. This week our panel takes on Disney's apparent double standard. Why is it that they are so quick to fire people like James Gunn and Roseanne while they continue to employ others like Keith Olbermann and Johnny Depp? San Diego Comic-Con is always a place for fans to look forward to announcements from their favorite comic book publishers, television studios, and movie studios. This year though was a bit different. At least when it came to announcements regarding the DC movie universe. Gone were the roadmaps pointing to a decade in the future showcasing all of the movies that DC was going to release showcasing their various super heroes. Instead, fans were given highlights of what DC is already working on. It's a simple variation from years past, but it's significant.While "Worlds of DC" was not officially announced as the replacement to the DCEU, a giant banner was shown during the Warner Brothers presentation saying "Welcome to the Worlds of DC" so it's only natural that everyone on the Internet took that to mean that the DCEU is dead. Of course, our panelists felt the need to jump in and look at what DC is doing with their movie properties and how things might be different going forward. Incredibles 2 has been making waves at the box office pulling in more than $775 million worldwide since its release last month. It's no secret that Star Wars fans have been unhappy as of late. And based on actions from a very vocal and passionate portion of the fandom, it looks like Rian Johnson and Kathleen Kennedy's The Last Jedi is to blame. To show their displeasure, they are protesting any and all new Star Wars projects. They are also taking credit for the lackluster success of Solo: A Star Wars Story.Grace Randolph from the YouTube channel Beyond the Trailer is reporting that as a result of the displeased fandom, Disney CEO, Bob Iger had a secret meeting to discuss the possibility of firing Lucasfilm boss, Kathleen Kennedy. The World Health Organization recently announced that they officially recognize video game addiction as a mental health disorder. They say that the intention of classifying "gaming disorder" is so that medical professionals can be “alerted to the existence of this condition.” This in turn will make it easier for professionals to help those who may be suffering from this newly recognized disorder.This week, the panel attempts to discuss exactly how legitimate of a disorder video gaming addiction truly is. Is it real, merely a "boogeyman," or is there is actually something else at play (pun intended). Cyberbullying is a problem that's becoming more and more prevalent in our Internet-connected society. Unfortunately, this is a problem that has left a trail of devastation in its wake. It has also started leading to toxic fandoms within the geek community. But with Star Wars actress Kelly Marie Tran leaving Instagram, and Millie Bobbie Brown from Stranger Things leaving Twitter, among other examples, it seems that celebs have had enough.This week, the panel discusses what can be done about the increasingly hateful and angry Internet, how prevalent cyberbullying and online harassment actually are, and what can be done to end all of the hate. Hereditary Angioedema (HAE) is a very rare and potentially life-threatening genetic condition that occurs in about 1 in 50,000 people. Its symptoms include swelling in various body parts including the hands, feet, face, and airway. Patients also often have bouts of excruciating abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting caused by swelling in the intestinal wall.This week, we chat with that 1 in 50,000 people. Jayme Cifuentes has lived with HAE for years, four of which were misdiagnosed.
