Something the Braves showed last night that we have not necessarily seen a lot of from them this season is the ability to com through in clutch situations. Marcell Ozuna with a base-clearing double in the 8th to tie the game, then Austin Riley with the long fly ball to win after Ronald Acuña Jr. was walked intentionally in the 10th. This is what the Braves need, and for the long term, as they have dug themselves in quite the hole since the season started.

Mike, Beau, and Ali also debate if the Braves should trade Marcell Ozuna at the trade deadline and build for the 2026 season, or try to get a nice middle infield bat and still try to push for the playoffs this season. The Morning Shift crew also continues to react to the four hypothetical trade offers for Atlanta Falcons quarterback Kirk Cousins that four different ESPN writers/insiders proposed yesterday. Mike, Beau, and Ali also react to former New Orleans Saints quarterback and newly retired NFL player Derek Carr explaining why he tired and didn't take the other $20 million dollars he left on the table. Then, The Morning Shift crew talks about if ranch is basic sauce, previews game one of the NBA Finals tonight, discusses who they think will be the biggest X-Factor in this year's Finals, and then closes out hour two by diving into The Life of Mike Johnson and get Mike'd Up!

Post-Dispatch podcasts page: https://go.stltoday.com/0hfn43 Please consider subscribing: https://go.stltoday.com/9aigz5 A big, defining topic for the Cardinals' future and their development of a big, defining hitter needs a jumbo-sized Best Podcast in Baseball. For more than a decade, the Cardinals have had to go shopping for their middle-order hitters -- either by trade (Paul Goldcshmidt, Nolan Arenado, Marcell Ozuna) or, rarely, by free agency (Carlos Beltran, Willson Contreras) -- but during this "reset" year where offense has been a major part of their success, the Cardinals seem closer to having homegrown hitters in the middle of the order to build around. Brendan Donovan, currently hitting No. 3, leads the league in doubles and hits. Candidates to climb up to cleanup include Ivan Herrera. There is the catch. Herrera's bright future as a hitter seems clear. Less so, is where he fits at catcher. Kevin Wheeler, host at KMOX/104.1 FM, joins the Best Podcast in Baseball to discuss all of the ramifications of this question: Can the Cardinals develop the middle of the order for a contending team? It's a question thick with implications. With St. Louis Post-Dispatch baseball writer Derrick Goold, Wheeler discusses Herrera's fit as a potential cleanup hitter, what it means that the Cardinals have an advancing group of catching talents in the minors, and whether Herrera needs to be flanked by a fellow prospect for the Cardinals to have a strong lineup. The cost of surefire middle-order hitters is only going up, and increasingly all teams need both lightning and thunder to come from within the house. This BPIB discusses whether the Cardinals need to have Jordan Walker and/or Nolan Gorman join the middle of the order for their development summer to be a success, and where Alec Buleson, JJ Wetherholt, Lars Nootbaar, and Masyn Winn best fit into the lineup of the future. The Cardinals, with 10 different players who have at least 15 RBIs, are cranking out the hits this season and they've won 18 of their past 23 because of the depth of their lineup. Is that what the future holds as well -- not one or two hitters that are the fulcrum of the lineup but a depth that goes all the way to the speed at the bottom? The answer could be the key whether the Cardinals contend in the years they're looking toward as well. The Best Podcast in Baseball, sponsored by Closets by Design of St. Louis, is a weekly production of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, StlToday.com, and Derrick Goold.

Dukes and Bell come back teasing their upcoming conversations including why the Falcons were comfortable with trading their 2026 first round pick to get back into the first round to select James Pearce Jr. and their interview late in the show Michale Kaye of the Charlotte Observer which leads Carl to share brief thoughts on the possibility of the Panthers reaching the playoffs and the Falcons missing out and what that could mean for Atlanta. Then in Daily Downloads, they share thoughts on the Steelers trading Geroge Pickens to the Cowboys, the Braves defeating the Reds 2-1 thanks to a walk off RBI double by Marcell Ozuna and the Pacers defeating the Cavs on a Tyrese Haliburton 3-pt to take a 2-0 series lead.

On May 6, 2025, the Cincinnati Reds fell to the Atlanta Braves 2-1 in a gut-wrenching extra-inning loss at Truist Park, marking their fourth straight defeat and sixth in eight games. The game was a pitchers' duel, with Reds starter Andrew Abbott delivering a stellar performance, allowing just one run over six innings, and reliever Tony Santillan pitching effectively. However, the offense struggled immensely, failing to capitalize on scoring opportunities, including a leadoff double, and managing only one run despite multiple chances with runners in scoring position. A critical defensive miscue in the ninth inning involving Jake Fraley and Matt McLain, where a relay throw was not executed, allowed the Braves to extend the game. Emilio Pagán's blown save and Marcell Ozuna's walk-off single in the 10th sealed the Reds' fate, dropping their record to 18-19. Reds fans, already frustrated by a season of unmet expectations under manager Terry Francona, erupted on social media. Posts on X captured the sentiment: fans called the team's fundamental play “sickening,” lamenting poor situational hitting and communication errors, with one user stating, “The lack of offense is so underwhelming… Better tie the series next two games” ( @Rhino_2016 ). Others expressed disillusionment, feeling the game was “unwatchable” and criticizing Francona's leadership as merely “collecting a paycheck” ( @ZachDoran4 ). The inability to score the ghost runner in extra innings and the defensive blunder were particularly sore points, with fans labeling the loss “brutal” ( @RedsDaily4 ). Despite some acknowledgment of bad luck, like a hit-by-pitch call and an unlucky bounce, the consensus was clear: the Reds' offensive woes and sloppy play have pushed fan patience to the brink, with many questioning the team's direction.

The assumed 2025 debut of Spencer Strider to the Atlanta Braves rotation is looking like it will happen on Wednesday, and it will be an immediate shot in the arm to this Braves team, but even Cy Young level pitchers require run support. The Braves at least have 5 hitters hitting above .200, and Marcell Ozuna is even hitting .306, but the timeliness of the Braves hitting is something less to be desired. The Braves are the 2nd worse team in MLB with runners in scoring position, and even though there are signs of power of late, they will have to start scoring more runs if they want to dig themselves out of the hole that they have created in the early part of the season. The hitting is coming around, and adding Strider will help, let's just hope that this April hole is not an insurmountable one to climb out of. Andy Bunker and Randy McMichael talk more about the Braves and the AL East swing that they are on right now.
