Live from LECOM Park in Bradenton, the North Shore Nine crew kicked off spring coverage with boots-on-the-ground vibes (yes, rain and all), quick takeaways from the early action, and what they were watching in the split-squad home opener with Mitch Keller getting his work in. They also announced Primanti Bros. is back sponsoring the postgame show sandwich giveaways and shared why camp feels different under Don Kelly. The show closed with a heartfelt tribute to Bill Mazeroski alongside Pirates historian Jim Trdinich. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Post-Gazette Pirates insiders Jason Mackey and Colin Beazley report from spring training in Bradenton, Fla. and offer their projections for the opening day roster before Grapefruit League exhibition games begin this weekend. Will Konnor Griffin secure a spot after his impressive arrival at camp? Or will Nick Gonzales be able to hold him off at shortstop for now? Will Nick Yorke or Enmanuel Valdez secure the final position player spot? Who's standing out within the group of Jose Urquidy, Hunter Barco, Carmen Mlodzinski and others for the fifth starer job behind Paul Skenes, Mitch Keller and Bubba Chandler? And will Mason Montgomery make it into the bullpen? Our duo tackles those difficult questions for GM Ben Cherington and manager Don Kelly, plus much more. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Post-Gazette Pirates insiders Jason Mackey and Colin Beazley report on the latest spring training workout in Bradenton, Fla., with a focus on the battle for the fifth starter job. Who's standing out within the group of Jose Urquidy, Thomas Harrington, Hunter Barco and Carmon Mlodzinski? Is anyone becoming a favorite to join Paul Skenes, Mitch Keller and Bubba Chandler in the starting rotation? Our duo tackles those questions and also offers some insight on how camp is progressing for other names including Konnor Griffin, Endy Rodriguez, Ryan O'Hearn, Jake Mangum and Spencer Horwitz. Post-Gazette Pirates insiders Jason Mackey and Colin Beazley report from spring training in Bradenton, Fla. with a focus on top prospect Konnor Griffin. Does he have a chance to make the MLB opening day roster? What is he learning in camp from big leaguers including Paul Skenes, Bryan Reynolds, Mitch Keller, Oneil Cruz and others? And why has he been impressive to watch early in camp? Our duo tackles those questions and more. Is Cruz improving against lefties? How much can Mason Montgomery add to the bullpen? And is Bubba Chandler flying under the radar a bit with all of the focus on Griffin? Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Post-Gazette Pirates insiders Jason Mackey and Colin Beazley report from the first day of spring training in Bradenton, Fla. They recap a busy day of comments from players and coaches as well as on-field action with the Grapefruit League opener looming later this month. How is starter Jared Jones looking in his return from injury? What changes has Mitch Keller made to his routine amid offseason MLB trade rumors? What did Paul Skenes think of the moves GM Ben Cherington made this offseason to acquire bats like Marcell Ozuna, Ryan O'Hearn, Jake Mangum and Brandon Lowe? What did manager Don Kelly have to say at the start of his first season at the help? Did top prospect Konnor Griffin look big-league ready? And what should we make of fellow prospect Termarr Johnson working out at third base? Our duo tackles those questions and more. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Former MLB pitcher Matt Clement joined the show. Matt reacted to the Marcell Ozuna signing in Pittsburgh. He said this is the exact thing the Pirates were looking for and this could be a pretty good pairing. Matt isn't sure if Ozuna gets back to being a legit MVP candidate, but the change of scenery should help him be better than last season. Matt pointed out that expectations in Pittsburgh are lower than they are in Atlanta. Matt said if things go south, they will easily be able to unload Ozuna around the deadline. Matt would still like to see a starting pitcher added to the rotation even though it appears as if Mitch Keller will be back.
The Pirates have made another move. The news broke this morning that they are singing Marcell Ozuna to a 1-year deal worth $12M. Ozuna will step in and be the team's DH, likely ending the Andrew McCutchen era in Pittsburgh. Do his off-the-field issues scare you at all about this move? What about his injury riddled 2025 campaign? Poni said there is reason to be excited about this – he's a player that can hit a lot of home runs and extend their lineup like we have not seen in a few years (if not more). Chris has his hold ups for both on and off the field reasons. Are fans ready to give the Pirates some flowers for how they handled this offseason? How do fans feel about the Marcell Ozuna signing? Post-Gazette Pirates insiders Jason Mackey and Colin Beazley react to the week of offseason moves and non-moves from GM Ben Cherington's front office. This show is presented by FanDuel. How much will new signing Jose Urquidy boost the starting pitching depth around names like Paul Skenes, Mitch Keller, Bubba Chandler and others? Will his relationship with new pitching coach Bill Murphy yield fruit? Were there ever any legs to the rumors surrounding star pitcher Framber Valdez, who ultimately signed with the Detroit Tigers this week? And what are some of the top spring training storylines with report day looming next week? Could Konnor Griffin prove he belongs on the opening day roster? Our duo tackles those questions and more. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. See pcm.adswizz.com for information about our collection and use of personal data for advertising.
Ken Rosenthal in The Athletic is reporting that the Pirates are "aggressively pursuing" left-handed pitcher Framber Valdez. Austin wonders if the Pirates could sign Valdez and trade Mitch Keller for a third baseman. The Pirates still need significant offensive help at third base. Valdez would be a big addition to the Pirates rotation.
Another Patriot villain was left out of the Hall of Fame – Robert Kraft. He's actually been on the ballot for quite some time. The Steelers just hired a guy with a Patriots cheating connection – Steve Scarnecchia, whose dad was on the Patriots staff through the 2000s. Steve's nickname was ‘spygate.' Steve is being hired as the ‘chief of staff.' Are the Patriots still hated like they were with Tom Brady and Bill Belichick? Chris argued that the Patriots were never really a rival to the Steelers because it was mostly a one-sided affair. Yes, fans still hate the Patriots. Former MLB pitcher Matt Clement joined the show. Matt's take to the Pirates not getting Eugenio Suarez is that the team will be pushed to bring up Konnor Griffin faster. He thinks the familiarity Suarez has in Cincy is likely why he chose them over the Pirates. Matt likes the effort from the Pirates in the offseason, but said they still have to make it more desirable to outside free agents. Matt believes Mitch Keller is definitely off the board right now. Will the Pirates have a backup plan and could that be Marcell Ozuna? The Andrew McCutchen reunion might be over. Does Matt think Limits would hit a major league pitch?

Post-Gazette Pirates insiders Jason Mackey and Colin Beazley analyze reports that the club discussed a trade with the New York Mets involving key pitching assets Braxton Ashcraft and Bubba Chander. How seriously should fans take the reported talks? Would dealing these young arms be a smart move for GM Ben Cherington, given his pitching depth surrounding names like Paul Skenes and Mitch Keller? Or would it weaken the only obvious strength of the team? And how would possible trade targets like Brett Baty and Mark Vientos look in this Pirates lineup alongside names like Oneil Cruz, Bryan Reynolds, Ryan O'Hearn and Brandon Lowe? Could they make the Pirates a legitimate threat offensively? Our duo tackles those topics; the chances Eugenio Suarez could still join the team via MLB free agency; and low win total projections for manager Don Kelly's 2026 roster. Post-Gazette Pirates insiders Jason Mackey and Colin Beazley debate five major questions surrounding the ballclub in 2026. Who is the starting catcher? Will Joey Bart hold on to the role, or will Henry Davis make a run at it? Is Jhostynxon Garcia ready to be the fourth outfielder, or will someone else have to step up? What is Jared Triolo's role? Will he be the starting third baseman or more of a utilityman? How will the bullpen shape up in front of Dennis Santana? And what will they do with Mitch Keller? Keep him or trade him? Our duo tackles those topics and more. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. See pcm.adswizz.com for information about our collection and use of personal data for advertising.
Post-Gazette Pirates insiders Jason Mackey and Colin Beazley recap Day 1 of the MLB winter meetings in Orlando, Fla. This show is presented by FanDuel. Which rumors related to the team are real? And which are fake? Particularly with regard to reports tying them to free agent power hitter Kyle Schwarber? Could GM Ben Cherington and manager Don Kelly make a big move involving their pitching depth, which includes names like Paul Skenes, Mitch Keller, Jared Jones, Braxton Ashcraft, Mike Burrows and Bubba Chandler? What's the future with the organization for big names past, present and future including Andrew McCutchen, Konnor Griffin and Oneil Cruz? And what did the front office have to say about the trade involving Johan Oviedo and Jhostynxon Garcia? Our duo tackles those questions and more. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. North Shore Nine hit the Winter Meetings with special guest Jolly Olive for a lively AMA packed with insight, humor, and plenty of Pirates talk. From breaking down the Schwarber offer fallout to debating Pete Alonso, exploring Mitch Keller trade scenarios, and sizing up potential NPB fits, Jolly delivered sharp takes and great perspective throughout. The crew also touched on Konnor Griffin hype, Cody Bellinger's market, and even a little Citi Field vs. Yankee Stadium discourse. It's a fast-moving, entertaining session that Pirates fans won't want to miss. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. The Pirates have made their first major move of the offseason, acquiring top-100 prospect Jhostynxon Garcia and pitching prospect Jesus Travieso from the Red Sox for right-hander Johan Oviedo, catching prospect Adonys Guzman and left-hander Tyler Samaniego. Pirates insider Colin Beazley analyzes the move with Noah Hiles and look at where Garcia might fit in best. Could he be an opening day outfielder? And does trading Oviedo mean anything about the future of Mitch Keller? Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Tonight on NS9LIVE, we're joined by Pirates beat writer Alex Stumpf to unpack the sudden wave of controversy surrounding Andrew McCutchen's future in Pittsburgh. Stumpf recently shared on Reddit that frustrations on both sides could make a 2026 reunion unlikely — only for Cutch himself to jump in on X and reply, “wow that's news to me.” We'll break down what this all means, whether fans should actually be worried, and how the Pirates might navigate this crossroads with a franchise icon. Plus, we're diving into the trade machine: ESPN's proposed Mitch Keller–for–Bryce Eldridge deal. Is it real? Is it fair? And would the Pirates ever consider moving their Opening Day ace for a top-20 prospect? Insight, reaction, and a little therapy — all happening live. This show is presented by FanDuel. They address not just why Skenes was the obvious choice despite the Pirates' poor season overall; Skenes' comments about his desire to win in Pittsburgh alongside manager Don Kelly and teammates including Oneil Cruz, Bryan Reynolds, Mitch Keller and others; and Skenes' and GM Ben Cherington's dismissal of trade rumors this week that suggested Skenes wants to be dealt to the New York Yankees. Pirates insider Jason Mackey from the PG joined the show. Jason is not confident the Pirates will hand out a multi-year free agent deal, which they haven't done in nearly a decade. He expects the Pirates moves to be in trade form, like a Mitch Keller deal or something else with their young pitchers. Jason said the Pirates still probably have some shame in the Tyler Glasnow trade, even though it was under the last regime. Jason doesn't expect Tommy Pham or Isaiah Kiner-Falefa will be in Pittsburgh next season. Jason wouldn't be surprised if the Pirates ‘just run it back with a lot of what they had this past year.'
What is going on with Pat Freiermuth? The Steelers paid the TE last offseason and now he is being phased out of the team's offense. He's roughly an $11M cap hit, but is on-pace to catch 0 TD this season and catch about 30 passes. Should they use Pat in a trade? Will we see him in the offense more going forward? The guys pointed out the usage of the other TEs in the offense and wondered where Pat really fits in right now. Is there a Pitt-Penn State element to why Pat Freiermuth gets more hate than other players? Does he get extra hate for not being Heath Miller? The money is another big part of it. Post-Gazette sports columnist Jason Mackey joins host Adam Bittner to gauge the Cy Young Award chances of Pirates ace Paul Skenes. Does he have the award locked up on the National League side? With only Detroit's Tarik Skubal coming close to matching his production on the American League side? How badly would a Cy Young in a losing season for Skenes reflect on owner Bob Nutting, GM Ben Cherington and manager Don Kelly? Have the Pirates as a club taken Skenes' greatness for granted, in a strong rotation that also includes Mitch Keller? And what level of pressure is on Cherington and Kelly amid the team's latest losing skid? Our duo tackles those questions and more. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. In his weekly Pirates mailbag podcast, Post-Gazette insider Noah Hiles answers reader questions. Among them: Should they commence a search for a new hitting coach this offseason after a lackluster first year from Matt Hague? What are the chances either Mitch Keller or Bryan Reynolds — or both — is traded this offseason? Now that top prospect Bubba Chandler is in the major league rotation, will he be there out of next season's spring training, too? Which player should fans be most excited for in 2026? And what current minor leaguers could actually help Don Kelly's club win next season? Noah answers those questions and more. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Mitch Keller had the Nats on lockdown—five scoreless through 5 on just 62 pitches—before he was lifted and the bullpen let it slip, turning a 3–0 lead into a 6–5 loss. Doug and DiNardo break down the decision to pull Keller, the ensuing relief carousel (and why “just get outs” wasn't the plan), and a bizarre base-running gaffe at the plate that erased the tying run. We hit the late push too: Nick Yorke's pinch-hit AB, Joey Bart's RBI knock for Henry Davis, and how a passed ball + non-competitive pitch compounded the damage. Offensively, there were real positives—Jared Triolo (2 hits), Spencer Horowitz (2 hits with a homer), Nick Gonzales (2-for-4), Bryan Reynolds RBI—while Andrew McCutchen's 0-for-4 and apparent back issue are something to monitor. Plus: what this says about Don Kelly's in-game leash, the bullpen's volatility (Sisk/Nicolas, etc.), and the bigger roster-building conversation. On his weekly mailbag podcast, Post-Gazette Pirates insider Noah Hiles answers reader questions. Among them: How should the front office manage the Oneil Cruz situation heading into next season, with major questions looming over his ability to become a true MLB star? Is GM Ben Cherington's job secure if this team is able to finish close to the .500 mark under manager Don Kelly? Was moving Bubba Chandler into the starting rotation next to Paul Skenes and Mitch Keller a wise idea? How much should Braxton Ashcraft's workload be managed moving forward? And if the Pirates can only keep one of Andrew McCutchen or Tommy Pham for 2026, which one should they choose?

Former MLB Pitcher Josh Towers and Scott Seidenberg take a look at teams that are buyers or sellers and players that could be dealt as we inch closer to the trade deadline. Scott Seidenberg and Josh Towers began the podcast by highlighting the proximity of the MLB trade deadline on July 31st and exploring player perspectives on potential trades (0:02-0:54). Josh Towers shared insights about clubhouse attitudes, noting that players on borderline teams usually do not focus too heavily on rumors unless they perceive their team as a genuine contender (0:54-2:22). Scott specifically referenced Zach Allen's scenario, discussing extra motivation players might feel to perform exceptionally well, either as a farewell to their home fans or to appeal to potential acquiring teams. Towers concurred, emphasizing how recent performances heavily influence trade interest (2:23-4:26). For players on losing teams, Towers explained they often refrain from openly expressing dissatisfaction but admitted they privately may urge agents to facilitate a trade, highlighting their focus remains primarily on what they can control—their performance (4:27-5:58). They then discussed prominent potential free agents, notably Kyle Tucker, Pete Alonzo, Ranger Suarez, and Framber Valdez. Towers indicated that Tucker could command a significant contract, speculating around $500 million due to the limited number of big names available (6:05-9:16). Scott and Josh shifted their focus to the Philadelphia Phillies, anticipating aggressive trade deadline actions given the impending free agency of key players like Kyle Schwarber and JT Realmuto, stressing the Phillies' urgency for success (9:17-10:30). They conducted a detailed breakdown of specific potential trade candidates: Eugenio Suarez from the Diamondbacks was deemed a definite trade candidate due to market scarcity (10:31-10:40). Sandy Alcantara, despite a 7.14 ERA, was viewed positively due to his talent and health (10:55-11:24). Mitch Keller from the Pirates and Zach Allen and Merrill Kelly from the Diamondbacks were discussed as attractive pitching targets, with Towers uncertain on Kelly's market value given his declining velocity (11:35-12:54). Nolan Arenado was considered a possible high-value trade piece, especially if packaged with Ryan Helsley, making him attractive to teams like the Yankees (12:54-13:53). Reid Detmers was identified as a valuable asset despite recent struggles, with Towers emphasizing his potential if developed properly (13:54-14:34). They then analyzed various teams: The Milwaukee Brewers' recent success raised questions about their legitimacy, given historical postseason struggles (17:06-18:25). The Toronto Blue Jays, despite inconsistency, were cautiously viewed as potential contenders (19:46-21:33). The Seattle Mariners were described as too streaky and lacking offensive consistency (22:27-23:10). The Texas Rangers were recognized for strong pitching but considered lacking sufficient offensive consistency (24:19-24:45). Tampa Bay Rays were praised for their unpredictable yet effective roster-building approach (24:46-25:33). In the National League: The San Diego Padres' potential was acknowledged, but Towers indicated internal cohesion issues possibly hampering performance (25:59-27:59). The Giants were dismissed as inconsistent and thus not genuine contenders (28:03-28:40). The Cincinnati Reds were enthusiastically discussed as a young team with potential but needing additional key offensive pieces to become legitimate contenders (29:21-33:27). Finally, they briefly touched on the Angels, suggesting that adding two pitchers could significantly enhance their playoff chances, despite current struggles and a negative run differential (34:29-35:47). Scott concluded by emphasizing the approaching trade deadline's impact on MLB futures markets, hinting at further discussions to come (37:47-39:51). Learn more about your ad choices.
