Une éruption plinienne, c'est l'une des formes les plus violentes et spectaculaires qu'un volcan puisse produire. Son nom évoque à lui seul la catastrophe : il vient de Pline le Jeune, un écrivain et sénateur romain du Ier siècle, témoin direct de la destruction de Pompéi lors de l'éruption du Vésuve en 79 après J.-C.. C'est de son récit que les volcanologues ont tiré ce terme, en hommage à la précision et à la force de sa description.Tout commence au petit matin du 24 août 79. Le Vésuve, jusque-là endormi depuis des siècles, explose soudainement. Pline le Jeune, alors âgé de 17 ans, observe la scène depuis la baie de Naples, à plusieurs kilomètres du volcan. Dans une lettre qu'il écrira des années plus tard à l'historien Tacite, il raconte avoir vu s'élever dans le ciel une immense colonne de cendres « comme un pin parasol » : une tige verticale qui monte droit, puis s'élargit en une nuée sombre. Ce détail deviendra le symbole même du phénomène : la colonne plinienne.Ce type d'éruption se caractérise par une explosion extrêmement puissante, provoquée par la pression des gaz emprisonnés dans le magma. Quand cette pression devient insupportable, elle libère d'un coup une énergie colossale : les gaz s'échappent, entraînant cendres, roches et fragments de lave pulvérisée jusqu'à plusieurs dizaines de kilomètres d'altitude — parfois jusqu'à la stratosphère. La colonne de matériaux peut atteindre 30 à 40 km de haut, avant de s'effondrer partiellement, formant des nuées ardentes qui dévalent les pentes à plus de 300 km/h, brûlant tout sur leur passage.Lors du drame du Vésuve, ces nuées ont enseveli Pompéi, Herculanum et Stabies sous plusieurs mètres de cendres. Les habitants, surpris par la rapidité de l'éruption, ont été piégés par la chaleur et les gaz. Pline l'Ancien, oncle de Pline le Jeune et célèbre naturaliste, tenta de secourir les victimes par bateau — il mourut asphyxié sur la plage de Stabies.Depuis, les volcanologues parlent d'éruption plinienne pour désigner les explosions les plus intenses, comparables à celle du Vésuve. D'autres volcans ont connu le même sort : le Krakatoa en 1883, le Mont Saint Helens en 1980 ou le Pinatubo en 1991, dont l'éruption a projeté plus de 10 milliards de tonnes de cendres dans l'atmosphère.En somme, une éruption plinienne, c'est le volcan porté à son paroxysme : une force brute de la nature, capable d'effacer des villes entières — et dont le nom, depuis deux millénaires, porte la mémoire d'un témoin romain fasciné par la fin d'un monde. Teryl Austin gave a little look into how the sausage is made with the defensive play calling. He confirmed that he calls the plays, but Mike Tomlin has plenty of say in it as well. The notion that it's a myth about Tomlin calling the plays isn't true. It's Tomlin's defense, but Austin gets to simply ‘call' most of the plays. Zwischen Luxus und Shutdown, Spenden und Symbolik: Der Umbau des Weißen Hauses wird zum Sinnbild für Trumps Amerika. Der US-Präsident lässt den Ostflügel des Weißen Hauses abreißen, um Platz für einen gigantischen Ballsaal zu schaffen. In dieser Folge sprechen Ingo Zamperoni und Jiffer Bourguignon über den Ballsaal, die Spender, die wirtschaftliche Lage und darüber, was das alles mit Project 2025, der konservativen Umbau-Agenda für die USA, zu tun hat. Während Trump sich den prunkvollen Ballsaal bauen lässt, stehen Regierungsangestellte für Essensspenden an. Das Land steckt noch immer im Shutdown und die Gehaltschecks bleiben aus. Auch für viele Familien wird die Lage dramatisch: Ab November steigen die Kosten für die Krankenversicherungen deutlich. "Vor diesem Hintergrund wirkt der Pomp um Trumps Ballsaal im Weißen Haus für mich völlig abgehoben", findet Jiffer. Bei dem Ballsaal geht es um weit mehr als Architektur. Für viele Amerikaner ist er ein Symbol für Trumps Machtanspruch und für eine Demokratie im Umbau. Mit Project 2025 hat die konservative Heritage Foundation einen Plan entworfen, der den Staatsapparat und die Gesellschaft unter Präsident Trump grundlegend neu ordnen soll - mit weitreichenden Folgen für Demokratie und Rechtsstaat. Einschätzungen dazu gibt es vom Historiker Thomas Zimmer, der fünf Jahre an der Georgetown University in Washington D.C. gelehrt hat. Steve didn't love Shemar Stewart coming out of school, but said he has the appearance of a disruptive player. He described Stewart as a ‘bull in a China shop,' but the Bengals will miss Trey Hendrickson. Steve thinks the back end of the Bengals defense provides some potential. Steve explained why Broderick Jones didn't get a great grade in the Cleveland game, when Myles Garrett was mostly shut out. Why are the Bengals LBs so bad? Steve said the Steelers will win, but it won't be easy.

Faut-il encore écrire à la main à l'heure du tout numérique ? La question mérite d'être posée quand partout sur les réseaux des influenceurs vantent l'écriture manuscrite et que, selon un sondage OpinionWay, 69 % des Français regrettent de ne pas écrire davantage à la main. Comment comprendre ce sondage ? C'est de la nostalgie de la part des Français ou un rejet des écrans et des claviers qui envahissent notre quotidien ? Invités :  Grégoire Borst, professeur de psychologie de l'enfant à l'université Paris Cité. Philippe Dabasse, graphiste-typographe, formateur et calligraphe. Dans un monde de plus en plus numérique, l'écriture manuscrite conserve une place centrale dans l'apprentissage. C'est ce que défend avec conviction Grégoire Borst. Pour lui, écrire à la main reste primordial, et ce, pour deux raisons fondamentales : La première, c'est que c'est une façon de développer sa motricité fine, la motricité de nos petits doigts. Mais c'est aussi très important parce que quand on apprend la graphie des lettres, ça aide notre cerveau à mieux lire les lettres. Apprendre à bien écrire, à bien former les lettres, c'est une préoccupation des pédagogues comme Grégoire Borst qui réfléchissent sur l'apprentissage de l'écriture des enfants : « C'est un enjeu effectivement, il y a une difficulté dans l'apprentissage du langage écrit dans notre pays. On voit qu'il y a des inégalités extrêmement fortes du point de vue de la capacité à bien apprendre à lire et que, encore une fois, la cursive, l'apprentissage de l'écriture, aide finalement à mieux lire. Et au-delà de mieux lire, ça aide aussi à penser. On voit bien que quand on écrit, il y a un rythme dans l'écriture qui nous contraint d'une certaine manière. On ne peut pas écrire très vite, contrairement à ce qu'on peut faire avec nos claviers. Et donc, on a une obligation de réfléchir, de penser avant d'écrire. Et ça, c'est assez transformant. Parce que l'éducation, c'est apprendre à penser. Et donc, peut-être que l'apprentissage de l'écriture, le fait de continuer à utiliser l'écrit, c'est une façon de mieux penser. » Notre deuxième invité nous apprend à écrire, il est formateur, et il nous apprend la calligraphie, la « belle écriture ». Philippe Dabasse : La belle écriture, c'est apprendre à maîtriser les gestes historiques et toute l'évolution de ces gestes, de l'écriture latine, pour en maîtriser les codes et, ou bien, se les approprier pour soi-même, ou bien pour des professionnels en acquérir les codes pour des utilisations dans leur domaine d'activité. Dans son centre de formation, Philippe Dabasse accueille des graphistes, des dessinateurs de caractères, des peintres en lettres... Il enseigne la calligraphie latine : « Si vous suivez les cours de calligraphie latine, vous ne serez pas que moine, vous pourrez être maître-écrivain, vous pourrez être esclave sous l'Empire romain… Vous pourrez découvrir plein de facettes de notre histoire, c'est une porte d'entrée vers l'histoire de notre civilisation gréco-romaine. Et c'est tout à fait passionnant de suivre les traces de ces gens qui ont écrit toutes ces lettres. » Parce que Philippe Dabasse raconte aussi l'histoire, il n'enseigne pas que le geste, il apprend aussi comment ce geste s'inscrit dans le temps et dans l'espace géographique de l'Occident : « Chaque période génère un contexte pour l'écriture, que ce soit par des contraintes ou des changements de société : l'apparition du livre manuscrit, le codex, le rotulus ou les élections à Pompéi… Tous ces contextes-là génèrent des formes d'écriture spécifiques. » Dans la chronique Ailleurs, nous parlerons du Festival des Littératures du Sud avec Marielle Anselmo, co-organisatrice de l'événement. L'événement est marqué par des spectacles sacrés, les ludi, qui sont également conçus pour sanctionner solennellement la construction, attenante au temple, du premier théâtre en pierre de la ville éternelle. Un témoin rapporte que le dernier jour des festivités, la foule voit dix-huit éléphants s'avancer sur la piste du Circus Maximus pour lutter contre des guerriers, probablement des esclaves déguisés en chasseurs africains. Les animaux amenés sur la piste viennent d'Afrique, ils appartiennent très probablement à l'espèce des éléphants de forêt, plus petits que ceux de la savane africaine. Une espèce bien présente à l'époque dans la région de l'Atlas marocain et de l'Afrique du Nord-Ouest. Ces pachydermes sont au cœur d'un événement sensationnel, qui va faire parler des générations entières de Romains. Un événement qui va entraîner aussitôt une perte importante de prestige et de respectabilité pour Pompée. En effet, les éléphants refusent le rôle de bêtes féroces qui leur est assigné. Et, sous l'effet du stress et de la douleur, ils se mettent à adopter des postures de détresse, ils se rassemblent en cercle et lèvent leur trompe en émettant des sons interprétés comme des pleurs et des appels à l'aide. Le public, à son tour, se met à pleurer, forçant Pompée à mettre fin au carnage. Depuis l'Antiquité, au moins, les animaux subissent domptage, labeur, enfermement et manifestent leurs émotions, interagissent avec les humains. Ils participent à l'Histoire. Et pourtant, celle-ci, jusqu'ici, prend rarement en compte leur contribution et, pourquoi pas, leur point de vue.
