Benefits of the Doubt: Chapter 2 The Era of Good Feelings (and even better benefits!)

From a bullet-shattered future president in colonial garb to the 19th-century equivalent of a viral shame campaign, Chapter 2, "The Era of Good Feelings (and even better benefits!)" of the six-part Benefits of the Doubt podcast series exposes the dramatic turning points that rescued American veteran care from local charity . Host Jonathan Kaupanger details how President James Monroe used a masterclass in political branding—and a heavy dose of Revolutionary War nostalgia—to pass the ground-breaking Pension Act of 1818, marking the first time the federal government took long-term responsibility for its heroes. But when a panicked Congress tried to claw back funds by aggressively vetting veterans' poverty, it took a freezing night in Philadelphia and a heartbreaking portrait of an elderly soldier in rags to spark an uproar of national guilt. The resulting public outcry forced the passage of the monumental Pension Act of 1832, permanently shattering the degrading "poverty tests," turning veterans from beggars to ballers overnight with massive back-pay checks, and establishing the foundational blueprint for the modern Department of Veterans Affairs.

Troy shares his journey from a childhood shaped by addiction to his own struggles with substance use, homelessness, and ultimately facing a 35 year prison sentence. He opens up about the loss of his mother, the turning point that led him to Harvest Academy, and how accountability, community, and lived experience transformed his life. Troy now dedicates his work to helping others find hope and build meaningful connections in recovery. This conversation offers an honest look at growth, resilience, and the impact of choosing a different path forward.   -- Troy, once lost to crime and addiction, turned his life around through Harvest Academy. Daily Emunah Podcast - Daily Emunah By Rabbi David Ashear

In this week's parasha , Shelach , the Jewish People were tested in emunah and bitachon and they failed. Kalev tried to give them chizuk , saying, "Hashem wants us to go in, we have nothing to fear." But it didn't help. The pasuk says סלחתי כדבריך ואולם חי אני – Hashem forgave them but they were not going to be allowed into Eretz Yisrael . Most mefarshim explain סלחתי כדבריך to mean Hashem forgave them for the עגל, but not for the meraglim . And that's why they were not allowed into Israel. The reason both sins are mentioned in the same pasuk is because both of them were due to a lack of bitachon . By the עגל, Hashem tested the people by showing them a vision which made it appear that Moshe Rabbenu was not coming back. They knew that the mann was in the merit of Moshe and so they feared without Moshe they would go hungry. Their test was they should have realized Hashem is the One supporting them. It is true that Hashem gives us things in the merit of tzaddikim , but He also gives us new tzaddikim when the ones we had were taken away. The Gemara says that one time the entire world was being sustained in the merit of Rabbi Chanina ben Dosa. But what happened when Rab Chanina ben Dosa passed away? There was still sustenance being given. The reason is because it is Hashem who gives sustenance and He is never bound by any one means to give it. The Jewish People received water in the midbar in the merit of Miriam. But when Miriam passed away, Hashem still continued giving them water in the zechut of Moshe. The Clouds of Glory were given in the merit of Aharon, but when Aharon passed away, Hashem brought the clouds back in the merit of Moshe. Then when Moshe passed away, Hashem continued helping His People through Yehoshua. Hashem is always the One who is taking care of us and He wants us to feel that in our hearts. He wants us to internalize that He is unlimited and has infinite ways of helping. When someone had an avenue of parnasa that is no longer producing the same money it used to, this person is being tested with the same type of test. Is he going to believe that it was the means that was supporting him, or that it was Hashem? No matter how good a person thinks he used to have it, Hashem could always make it even better. A man said his wife works as a nurse's aid at people's homes. Before she gave birth, she worked for a nice old lady and they both enjoyed the relationship and the pay was good too. When she gave birth, a substitute was put there instead and when her paid vacation ended, the substitute didn't want to leave. She too had fallen in love with this nice old lady. Instead of making a fuss about it, the man's wife set out to start over from the beginning. She tried several places but nothing was available. Frustrated, she started getting angry at the substitute who took her job. But then she caught herself and worked on her emunah. She managed to remove the anger from her heart and feel at ease, knowing she was in Hashem's Hands. The very same afternoon that she was finally calm, she got a call from an agency with a new offer. The lady she was given to work for was also very sweet like the other lady. This job gave her more hours and more pay and was much closer to her house. She thought she had it good before and would never get the same opportunity, now she has it much better. We are never dependent on one means in any area of life. Hashem is the One who provides the means and He is unlimited. And we are to know that He was, is and always will be there to help us. Shabbat Shalom.

GA GOP two options make Ossoff look even better; the one run-off I'm weighing in on is ...

It's now abundantly clear that not only are the Georgia Republican Party's two Senate options of poor candidate quality with mid-20th century 'Jim Crow' vision, they're corrupt. Even worse for the Georgia GOP, they're golden boy - governor Brian Kemp - has been pulled into the woodchipper and exposed as well. With good local journalism disappearing - even in major hubs like Atlanta - it's important to pay attention to when it's still covering stories like these. The whole "Dooley-Kemp-other Dooley money funnel" story brought to light last week by WXIA-TV's Doug Richards was actually touched on in a Substack piece by Georgia Politics & Polling (no author named). Still, hat-tip!That sullies the already mediocre shine on the campaign of failed football coach Derek Dooley, son of UGA football legend Vince. It's also tarnished the perception that Brian Kemp is an unblemished 'rising star' with 2028 aspirations. Rep. Mike Collins, however, has long seemed to have issues with the company he keeps - notably his chief staffer and campaign manager Brandon Phillips. If Brandon's not making repulsive statements about rape victims being "sloppy seconds," he's making sure his girlfriend gets paid via taxpayer dollars through an internship where she did nothing. Then there's another staffer - Kip Talley - working double-time to free a Holocaust-denier - and bragging he'd do so in a group chat.A whole lot of 'ick' on that run-off ballot.- - - Speaking of run-offs, I'd opted not to weigh in on Georgia Democratic run-offs because I don't see bad options; but the lieutenant governor's race calls for commentary. Listen, I've no issues with ambition, but former Senator Nabilah Parkes put hers above her constituents, and her debate performance did little to make her look as a) a superior choice or b) a likable candidate (and she's a likable person, so that's baffling). Leaving your post is one thing; leaving the middle of a General Assembly session is another. Trying to explain that your absence means nothing because the other side is the majority and will ram new maps through anyway smacks of 'defeatism' and her opponent, state Senator Josh McLaurin is right to point that out.

I'm your host, Kellie Lupsha, a high-performance health coach, who is delighted to be your guide to vitality. In this episode, I'm reflecting on a life-changing return from Europe, where what started as a trip became something much deeper about time, family, health, and the way we choose to live our lives. I share what it was like traveling not just for myself, but with my mom in her 80s and my daughter abroad, and how that experience shifted the way I see “waiting” for the right time. This conversation is really about what happens when you stop postponing life and start actually living it.Key Highlights:➡️ Why my recent trip to Spain with my 81-year-old mom shifted my perspective on aging, health, and the legacy I want to leave behind. ➡️ Why we keep putting off our dream lives and how to stop waiting for the “perfect” moment to design your future. ➡️ Why the shared experiences with loved ones carry a value that no price tag can match. ➡️ How to notice when you have settled for “good enough” and the power of asking, Can I receive more? ➡️ The mindset shift that made me realize I did not have to trade all my time for income. ➡️ How a global shutdown forced me to rethink income, reclaim my time, and pivot into the online space. ➡️ Redefining a rich life as freedom, flexibility, and meaningful experiences, not just material spending. ➡️ A simple reflection exercise to see if you are actually enjoying your life and how to intentionally bring more fun into your week. We live in a world that has made safety a religion. And honestly? Most of us have brought that same instinct into our faith. We want God's protection more than God's will. We want the blessings without the cost. We want a Jesus that's manageable. But that's not the Jesus we find in Scripture. In this message, Charlie digs into a phrase a lot of us have heard — "the safest place you can be is the center of God's will" — and asks whether we've gotten that wrong. Because the disciples walked toward the place where people tried to stone Jesus. Because Paul's resume was shipwrecks and beatings and prison. Because the Hall of Faith in Hebrews doesn't just include the miracles. It includes the ones who were tortured, wandered, and suffered — and of whom the world was not worthy. Safety is a good. But is it our best good? Charlie offers three questions worth asking alongside "is it safe?" — is it on mission, is it worth the cost, and is it faithful? This isn't a guilt trip. It's a conversation about what it actually looks like to follow a God who walked into the cross.

In our latest episode we interview zoning attorney and author Donald Elliott about his book An Even Better Way to Zone: Achieving More Affordable, Equitable, and Sustainable Communities. Elliott's work comes alongside other recent zoning books covered on the show, including M. Nolan Gray's Arbitrary Lines (arguing for getting rid of zoning) and Sarah Bronin's Key to the City, his approach aligning with reforming zoning rather than eliminating it. Elliott explains that his earlier book, A Better Way to Zone (released nearly 20 years earlier), focused on broadly applicable zoning “basics” and common misunderstandings, while the new book reflects two additional decades of practice and is more targeted.Elliott says An Even Better Way to Zone concentrates on four substantive, current priorities that appear across many zoning projects: enabling more affordable housing, supporting more sustainable development, improving zoning outcomes for disadvantaged groups, and—most notably—zoning for continued reuse and redevelopment rather than focusing only on what communities want “today.” He frames zoning as a governance system, not a wish list, emphasizing that it defines legal rights to use property and therefore needs to anticipate ongoing change, especially in built-out places.Show Notes:Further Reading: Death and Life of Great American Cities by Jane JacobsThe Image of the City by Kevin A. In this episode of Even Better, host Sinikka Waugh is joined by Jenna Adams Valadez for a practical and thoughtful conversation on how neurodivergent individuals can truly thrive at work. Jenna shares why this topic matters personally and helps redefine neurodivergence to include ADHD, autism, dyslexia, anxiety based differences, and more as different ways of processing rather than deficiencies. Together, they explore why clarity and prioritization are essential leadership skills, how standard work and change management reduce hidden friction, and what leaders often get wrong when trying to support inclusion. The episode also examines why masking is not the same as thriving and how emerging tools like AI can support more personalized ways of working when used with intention. Listeners will walk away with actionable insights to build stronger, more inclusive teams where more people can do their best work. -- Jenna Adams-Valadez is a Lean Six Sigma Master Blackbelt and Certified Continuous Improvement Consultant based in Omaha, NE. Are you waking up at 3 am, heart racing, mind spinning, unable to shut off the fear, no matter what you try? Are months, maybe years of relentless bad news quietly aging you from the inside out? Science now proves it is. And science also proves you can reverse it, fast. Michael welcomes back Dr. Dawson Church, one of the world's leading EFT researchers with over 200 clinical trials to his name and 22,000 veterans helped to recovery from PTSD, a man who has also lived through the unthinkable. When his home burned to the ground in a California wildfire, losing everything overnight, Dr. Dawson didn't just survive it. He tapped his way through it, meditated through the ash and the grief, and discovered something extraordinary about what the human nervous system is truly capable of. His newest work, Spiritual Intelligence, maps the neuroscience of awakening itself, and the findings will blow your mind. This isn't about managing stress. This is about lighting up four hardwired circuits in your brain that make bliss, resilience, and genuine transcendence your new normal. Key Topics: Why a single EFT tapping session reduces cortisol by an average of 24%, and why chronic stress, left unchecked, can rob you of up to 24 years of your life. The truth about why talking about your problems doesn't work, and what tapping does in nanoseconds that talk therapy simply cannot. How Dr. Dawson's home burning down became the greatest proof of his life's work, and the one thing he did the very next morning that brought him back from dissociation. The 3 am wake-up hack: why you keep jolting awake in the middle of the night and the evidence-based technique to turn that window into deeper sleep. What the enlightenment network is, the four specific brain circuits that meditators grow bigger, stronger, and more connected, and how stress is the only thing shutting them off. Why we are literally hardwired for enlightenment, and the stunning data showing the human neocortex has grown 13% in volume in just one generation. How meditation has been shown to halt, and even reverse, Alzheimer's-related brain shrinkage, growing key regions back within six months. EcoMeditation: the five-minute, evidence-based protocol Dr. Dawson created to get even the most scattered, over-stimulated minds into deep meditative states, fast. Why tapping is subtractive, and meditation is additive, and how combining them is the double whammy that breaks the trauma cycle for good. Your brain can build a brand new neural pathway in just 12 seconds. The four circuits of your enlightenment network: emotion regulation, focused attention, compassion, and reduced self-absorption, are already wired inside you. They`ve always been there. Stress is simply the switch that turned them off. And you, right now, have everything you need to turn them back on. Join the Inspire Nation Soul Family!
