The WNBA can't get out of its own way this week. The league's official account posted — then deleted — video of Paige Bueckers and Angel Reese casually discussing a $400 All-Star Weekend bet, a clear violation of the CBA's anti-wagering rules, and it's raising real questions about how a league office lets that get anywhere near publish. Meanwhile, Seattle Storm co-owner Celeste Keaton was fined and suspended for five home games after confronting two teenage fans holding signs supporting Sophie Cunningham, adding another layer to a franchise's messy week. Elsewhere in the gambling world, sports betting influencer Manny Cortez is back in the news as his lawsuit over a $500,000 Celtics championship bet moves toward a February trial — the sportsbook used his winning ticket to market itself on social media, then refused to pay him, citing his use of a third party to place the wager. And the fallout continues from Netflix's new prediction markets documentary, as the sports content platform prominently featured in the film's trailer keeps taking heat online for how it's chosen to talk about its own role in it. Porter, Isaac Rose-Berman, and Joey Knish join Jacob Gramegna to break down all of it on this week's Circle Back.
The show recaps listener reaction on the double-standard debate before pivoting to a WNBA controversy: Angel Reese revealed in a postgame presser that she and Paige Bueckers had a $400 side bet on a Wings-Dream game, prompting the league to quickly delete a since-viral promotional video of the wager. "Private Eye" John lays out that the CBA explicitly bans players from betting on league games, with penalties ranging up to outright dismissal, while the hosts debate whether transparent, legalized player wagering could actually be good marketing rather than a scandal.
This week, I had the pleasure of speaking with Dr. Susanna W. Blair, Senior Director of Regulatory and Technical Affairs for the Consumer Brands Association (CBA), which represents the interests of the consumer-packaged goods (CPG) community. We discuss CBA's mission, its focus on food and beverage ingredients, how Make America Healthy Again (MAHA) advocacy has impacted CBA, the Association's focus on the Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) framework, among other priority projects CBA is pursuing, and much more. Host of the Dan Patrick Show, Dan Patrick joined OverDrive to discuss Shohei Ohtani's gambling scandal, the behind-the-scenes of the case in MLB, the league potentially heading towards a lockout in the CBA, LeBron James' legacy with the 76ers, the structure of Philadelphia's roster, his retirement from his broadcasting career and more.

Lima and Daryl Ruiter pivot from previewing Todd Monken's blunt, no-filter coaching style in Browns training camp to breaking down why the Cavs' offseason has stalled, explaining that the new CBA's second apron makes signing Jonathan Kuminga to the money he wants nearly impossible without a sign-and-trade. They debate whether trading away Max Strus, whom Lima compares to a young Matthew Dellavedova and Anderson Varejao, is worth it to get a needed athletic upgrade, while acknowledging the roster desperately lacks explosiveness and defensive versatility. The two also work through their complicated feelings on Donovan Mitchell's max contract, agreeing he's a needed scorer but not a true number one, and lean on the idea that 41-year-old LeBron and 37-year-old James Harden wouldn't have solved the team's youth and athleticism problem anyway.
Lima and Daryl examine LeBron James' decision to sign with the Philadelphia 76ers and why the fit might turn into a disaster for the veteran superstar. They also preview Browns training camp in Berea, focusing on new offensive coordinator Todd Monken's intense coaching style. Finally, they discuss the Cavaliers' roster construction challenges under the new CBA and recent social media posts from current players. 02:10 - LeBron's Philadelphia Move 05:54 - LeBron's Knicks Plan A 09:14 - Cleveland's Post-LeBron Future 16:08 - Browns Training Camp Preview 19:25 - Todd Monken's Coaching Style 24:55 - Cavs' Offseason Trade Rumors 34:31 - Mocking Cavs Reunion Photos 39:45 - Comparing Altman and Gansey
Hall of Fame Cardinals manager Whitey Herzog gets stuck in the Yankees system—and the Army—leading to a discussion of social responsibility when it comes to risking the lives of citizen-soldiers (whether Herzog or Ted Williams in the Korean War years or something closer to the present day). Then we visit the win-or-go-home American League playoff game between the Red Sox and the Indians, a contest famously mishandled by Joe McCarthy, another future Hall of Famer. What went into his thinking that day, and are the legends of pitchers ducking the job true? With stops along the way at an eight-man rotation, the A's 1929 surprise starter, virus versus host, and so much more! The Infinite Inning is a journey to the past to understand the present using baseball as our time machine. America's brighter mirror, baseball reflects, anticipates, and even mocks the stories we tell ourselves about our world today. Baseball Prospectus's Steven Goldman shares his obsessions: history from inside and outside of the game, politics, stats, and Casey Stengel quotations. Along the way, we'll try to solve the puzzle that is the Infinite Inning: How do you find the joy in life when you can't get anybody out? Short vibraphone melody (loop) by xkeril

Is the NBA overreacting to the second apron? Wes Goldberg argues that the loudest criticism of the league's new Collective Bargaining Agreement is missing the bigger picture. He breaks down why recent salary dumps by the Thunder, Celtics and Knicks don't prove the system is broken, explains what the players actually gained in the latest CBA, and makes the case that the one change everyone avoids discussing—reducing the number of regular-season games—is the real solution to many of the NBA's biggest problems. Then Wes reacts to the latest on LeBron James' prolonged free agency, explaining why he believes basketball may not be the biggest factor delaying a decision and why Miami still makes the most sense. Finally, he unveils a radical idea for reimagining the NBA season using a World Cup-inspired format featuring stages, Swiss-system scheduling and fewer regular-season games to make every matchup matter. 00:00 Intro 00:59 Truth about Second Apron 18:26 LeBron's Decision Delay 27:50 The NBA Like the World Cup RealGM Radio is your top spot for the best weekly NBA coverage. Assistant Coaches Adrian Bias and Jerry Filbin join Dave and Mason on the bench for a Snyder-hosted game that starts out a little like a certain Zach Galifianakis show. After Jerry informs us that Brendan Sorsby has been banned from NFL Europe, the Missing Link is, well, very missing. In the second, Adrian knows CBA players, and Dave gets irate with the NHL original 6, and with Jerry for knowing the Goliath answers without telling him. Appropriately, we take a halftime trip to the liquor store, where Jerry extols an answer for “tasting good coming back up”. In the “Let it Ride” third, Dave inaugurates the Roman Reigns Award for Best Practice Squad Defensive End. After some complicated wagering in the fourth, Snyder clues a bonus question with references to moose and diabetes, leading Dave to declare: I have one of those! Nate Tice sits down with Domonique Foxworth to cover how the NFL game is evolving over time, including the biggest issues the league faces entering the 2026 season. Nate & Domonique cover how NFL training camp attempts to prepare players for the rigors of a season with less and less full contact, the future of NFL defenses (and why it might be built around the safety position), what Domonique watches for when watching ball, changing offensive tendencies and how defenses can pick them apart and the most under-appreciated NFL “rule breakers” on defense (including Kyle Hamilton and Jalen Pitre). Later, Domonique provides his insight as former president of the NFLPA as the duo dive into the state of the NFL Player's Association: What should be the hardline issues players are fighting for in the next CBA? Could there be a labor strike looming? How do NFLPA execs decide what's worth fighting for? He also examines how recent collective bargaining agreements have shifted power back to owners, why today's young stars appear more focused on basketball than celebrity, and what that could mean for the league's future.Ric also shares his firsthand scouting report from NBA Summer League in Las Vegas, breaking down the performances of AJ Dybantsa, Darryn Peterson, Cam Boozer, Caleb Wilson, Yaxel Lendeborg and several other top prospects—revealing who looked NBA-ready and who still has plenty to prove. Finally, Ric addresses the latest LeBron James speculation, explaining why public praise from rival executives doesn't necessarily reflect real trade-market leverage—and why LeBron's NBA reality has fundamentally changed.TIMESTAMPS00:00 Introduction01:23 Why NBA stars are choosing winning over maximum salaries03:00 Jalen Brunson, SGA and Wembanyama changing superstar priorities05:36 Why NBA superstars are actually underpaid08:03 How the CBA shifted power back to owners11:40 The hard-cap era and its impact on contenders12:20 Why today's NBA stars are restoring respect for the game15:49 Summer League observations from Las Vegas17:00 Cam Boozer, Merez Johnson Jr. and Yaxel Lendeborg impress17:45 AJ Dybantsa vs. Darryn Peterson: First showdown19:30 Caleb Wilson's record-setting debut—and why Ric wasn't sold21:42 The truth behind LeBron James trade speculation24:10 Why contenders aren't lining up for LeBron26:05 Final thoughts#NBA #NBAPodcast #RicBucher #LeBronJames #VictorWembanyama #JalenBrunson #ShaiGilgeousAlexander #NBASummerLeague #AJDybantsa #CamBoozer #BasketballPodcast #UnitedWeCastSupport this show http://supporter.acast.com/bucher-and-friends. The 96th edition of the MLB All-Star Game is all wrapped up in Philadelphia after the American League defeated the National League, 4-0. With New York Yankees outfielder Cody Bellinger taking home the game's MVP award, the AL continued its dominance over the Senior Circuit with its 11th win in the past 13 matchups. On this episode of Baseball Bar-B-Cast, Jake Mintz and Jordan Shusterman give their thoughts on the aftermath of the game, including why the Chicago White Sox's Miguel Vargas should have gotten some consideration for the MVP award and why the National League continues to struggle in this exhibition. They then discuss the highlight of the night: a tribute to baseball and America that featured a nod to the movie The Sandlot. Later in the show, Jake and Jordan discuss the press conference held with MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred and MLBPA leader Bruce Meyer, as the two sides discuss their current positions in the CBA negotiations. They then try to figure out where to put the Boston Red Sox in the latest power rankings following their hot streak before breaking down some surprising Miami Marlins roster news. 1:41 - The Opener: All-Star Game reaction 21:36 - Cody Bellinger wins MVP 25:22 - We Need to Talk About: All-Star theatrics 40:23 - All-Star Week in Philly wrap-up 47:14 - Around the League: CBA update 53:55 - Red Sox power rankings 58:18 - Rintaro Sasaki signs with Marlins Subscribe to Baseball Bar-B-Cast on your favorite podcast app:

Then, they quickly touched on where MLS promotion has been throughout the World Cup, and Rico tried to guess the teams in the league with only the city name provided. The guys wrapped the hour with their intended topic: which of the Skubal/Duren/Larkin situations are you most frustrated with?

Just hours after Donovan Mitchell signed his extension, national NBA media already started calling it a bad contract, exactly as Anthony predicted weeks earlier. Ken pushes back hard, arguing that almost every max contract for a non top-five player gets labeled bad in today's NBA and that the Cavs had no real alternative given what the Jarrett Allen and Jalen Brown trades suggest they'd get in return. Anthony and Ken agree the new CBA is forcing every team into this same bind, but they maintain Mitchell remains a top-tier player whose playoff heroics get unfairly compared to LeBron and Kyrie's career-best moments rather than a fair baseline. They close by teasing Jason Lloyd's take on where LeBron might land next and whether that's the same answer as where he legacy-wise should go.
The first wave of the NBA offseason is complete, and Wes Goldberg has some strong opinions. Before welcoming Bobby Manning of CLNS, Wes runs through the moves he feels most confident about—including the Clippers' franchise reset, Miami's blockbuster trade for Giannis Antetokounmpo, Charlotte's decision to move on from LaMelo Ball, and why Phoenix's trade for Miles Bridges leaves more questions than answers. He also dives into the moves he's still wrestling with, including Ja Morant's fit in Portland, the Lakers' massive investment in Walker Kessler, and whether Philadelphia's acquisition of Jaylen Brown will age well. Then Bobby Manning joins the show to unpack Brad Stevens' explanation for trading Brown, discussing the impact of the new CBA, Boston's financial reality, whether the Celtics waited too long to pivot, and where the franchise goes from here. Finally, Wes ranks LeBron James' reported landing spots and reveals the destination he believes gives LeBron the best chance to chase one more championship. Ken Carman and Anthony Lima analyze reports regarding LeBron James' free agency and the possibility of a return to the Cleveland Cavaliers. They also tackle a controversial NFL ranking that places the Browns' roster 31st in the league and discuss how the new CBA impacted the Jalen Brown trade. 02:15 - LeBron James Free Agency Reports 06:05 - Ric Bucher's NBA Insights 09:25 - Evaluating Potential Cavaliers Lineups 13:35 - Caller Joe on LeBron's Legacy 19:30 - Browns 31st in NFL Lineups 24:50 - Todd Monken and Andrew Barry 33:20 - Team USA and Jalen Brown Trade
Ken and Anthony rip Americans who publicly rooted for Belgium over Team USA, tying the backlash to political comments and arguing sports shouldn't get caught up in polarization, with John chiming in about his own path from conservative talk radio into sports for that exact reason. The conversation pivots to Brad Stevens defending the Celtics' decision to trade Jaylen Brown to the Sixers, with Ken taking a victory lap for correctly predicting it as a win for Boston given the punishing new NBA cap rules around paying two max players. John, a Philly native, and Ken spar over whether the Sixers' front office can be trusted to make the deal work. The segment closes with Ken questioning whether the new CBA effectively fleeced the Cavs on their Donovan Mitchell trade and whether a Mitchell trade return would even be worth pursuing now.
Ken and Anthony break down the Guardians' four-game split with the White Sox, praising Brayan Rocchio's walk-off homer and the overall entertainment value of the series despite dropping the final two games. They note Tanner Bibee's recent home-run struggles and touch on Jose Ramirez and Angel Martinez getting valuable at-bats back as the team heads into a crucial stretch, while wondering if looming CBA uncertainty is making the front office more conservative than usual. The conversation shifts to LeBron James, with both hosts speculating whether an announcement could come around the July 11th anniversary of his 2014 return, though they doubt it happens on a night dominated by the USA-Belgium World Cup match. Ken closes the show noting that despite loud anti-LeBron voices online, he didn't encounter a single skeptic in person over the weekend.
Ohio State's 2027 recruiting class is cleared for takeoff. The latest commitment for the Buckeyes came in the form of 5-star wide receiver Jett Harrison on Friday. He is the brother of former OSU WR Marvin Harrison Jr., and continues what has been an amazing streak on the recruiting front for the Buckeyes. Also, is it "inevitable" that one day major college football players will be considered "employees" of their universities, right down to signing a CBA?Jonah Booker and Dave Biddle tackle that and much more on the Friday 5ish.
