John Spencer is considered one of the leading experts in military operations in an urban context. As winter sets in with a vengeance life is becoming harder in Ukrainian cities and the supply of power and heat become unreliable from Russian missile strikes. Russia's campaign to cripple Ukraine's power infrastructure could therefore trigger a new wave of emigration to Europe, and there is still the threat of a new offensive against Kyiv. As Russia's position on the battlefield becomes more precarious, Putin may resort to terroristic threats, against nuclear facilities, or other irresponsible actions. Ukraine is on a path to victory, but how long will it take, and what will be the eventual cost? John Spencer is chair of Urban Warfare Studies at Modern War Institute at West Point, Major, US Army (ret). Keywords: Britain, Israel, Ukraine, urban warfare, modern warfare Episode Transcript: “Urban Warfare” Stephanie Crider (Host) Decisive Point introduces Conversations on Strategy, a US Army War College Press production featuring distinguished authors and contributors who explore timely issues in national security affairs. The views and opinions expressed in this podcast are those of the authors and are not necessarily those of the Department of the Army, the US Army War College, or any other agency of the US government. Conversations on Strategy welcomes John Spencer. Spencer currently serves as the chair of urban warfare studies at the Modern War Institute, codirector of the Urban Warfare Project, and host of the Urban Warfare Project podcast. He served over 25 years in the US Army as an infantry soldier, having held the ranks from private to sergeant first class and second lieutenant to major. He also currently serves as a colonel in the California State Guard, assigned to the 40th Infantry Division, California Army National Guard, as the director of urban warfare training. His research focuses on military operations in dense urban areas, megacities, urban, and subterranean warfare. Welcome to Conversations on Strategy, John. I'm glad you're here. (John Spencer) Thanks for having me. Host Let's talk about urban warfare. The US Army War College Press has published several pieces on this topic over the years. On a recent Urban Warfare Project podcast, you note urban warfare is the hardest. Can you elaborate on that? (Spencer) Sure. So I'm pretty adamant out of all the places you could ask military units to try to achieve strategic objectives, the urban operating environment is the hardest. Because, one, the physical terrain, right, which is complicated and hard in all areas—high elevation, you know, deep jungles—but the actual element of the urban physical terrain, the three-dimensional, the surface, subsurface, rooftops, the canalizing effect of the buildings, and the architecture of the city that reduce our military's or any military's ability to do what they want to do, right? So to do maneuver warfare, to use (intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance or) ISR and long-range strike capabilities—it doesn't get negated; it gets degraded in the urban environment. So I think it is the hardest because of that complexity of that physical terrain. But, by definition, “urban” means there's people present. By our definition, the US military's definition, “urban” means that there's man-made terrain on top of natural terrain. There's a population, and then there's infrastructure to support that population. So with the presence of civilians in the operating environment in which militaries will be told to achieve objectives, the presence of civilians means that there will be a limit on the use of force. Because of the law of war, the international humanitarian law, (law of armed conflict or) LOAC, the different names that we use for it—since World War II and even all the way before World War II—most people think that in urban fights, like Stalingrad and, for us, Manila and Seoul—that was just a free range. There's always a limit on the use of force. So going into it, it's going to be harder for the military to use their form of warfighting because there's gonna be limits on the use of force. Of course, there's the three-block war, where soldiers and commanders will have to be fighting a peer competitor, at the same time dealing with humanitarian approaches and trying to get civilians out of the battle area, trying to save infrastructure. General (Charles) Krulak called it “the three-block war.” And then, of course, we often, when we envision urban warfare in massive operating environments that are urban, we think the civilians are just a hurdle or a concern to protect them.

Suzi is joined by Retired Colonel Loren Weeks to talk about some of the issues and possible solutions within the VA Healthcare system. Some of the questions are: Why is the Veterans Affairs Hospital system not mapped out to serve veterans as efficiently as they are served when on active duty? Why is it that when veterans go to a VA hospital no matter where the location, the EMR system cannot retrieve medical records from another VA location? Why does a veteran have to enroll when they come into the Emergency Room before being seen? So many questions? The apex of U.S. power was the 1990s where Washington stood militarily unchallenged, but the tables have turned as today Russia and China have become worthy adversaries. Inflation and shortages are symbolic of a deteriorating economy and unprecedented time of decline, which is being accepted by the ruling class. He compares the situation that led to the Yugoslav civil war in the Balkans to what's going on in America today and the real possibility of a second civil war. Our guests today are three friends from the Central Coast of CA who share a mission: to make the Earth a better place for all their descendants. Earth Day, Earth Month, Earth Year–why not an Earth Eternity? We know that nothing lasts for eternity; one day, scientists say, our Sun will fail us and leave everything in darkness and cold, long after life on planet Earth no longer exists. But what about now? How do we celebrate our Earth's longevity, long after a day in April, a month in Spring or a year from now? Spend the next hour with our guests June Cochran, Kelly Fisher and Grace Gautereaux while we vision together an Earth Eternity healed of the many mistakes we made while generations embraced the notion that Earth's resources were boundless, that our greed was “good” and that our abuses would never be noticed. Today I want to introduce you to a book called, “The Only Women in the Room.” I have felt like that many times over the last 25 years myself, and finally, someone has written a book about this. If you have ever felt lost, alone, or lacking inspiration as a female real estate investor this book is for you. This book is also for all the men out there that have helped women succeed in this business, and I know there are many that have done that. Real estate investing has always been a male-dominated field since I first started more than two decades ago. It was just the way it was much like tradespeople were traditionally male. This book was compiled by a strong female investor by the name of Ashley L. Wilson. It features 20 female real estate investors and their stories. To say it is a powerful book would be an understatement. Ashley L. Wilson There is a paragraph that Ashley wrote that I would like to share with you because it sums up my beliefs perfectly on this subject. Ashley says,” Why were women not investing in real estate? In my quest to find the answers to each question, I kept landing on one direct link – the gender divide. The gender divide is both intentional and unintentional and is witnessed on multiple fronts with the most common one people think of as being the wage gap. Unfortunately, it starts way before you ever enter the workforce; you are born into the divide”. This is a profound statement. You are born into it! Ashley's chapter in this book will open your eyes to how women came to be “in the divide” and she'll show you a way out. Here is What You Will Find in the Chapters This book, “The Only Woman in the Room,” is packed with knowledge from 20 successful female investors from around the country. It doesn't matter whether your focus is on residential or commercial real estate investing, you will find stories that will inspire you and also help you move forward when things get tough. There is someone in this book that has been where you are today who has overcome the same struggles. You will definitely find a role model who is where you want to be that will lead the way as you go down this path they have already traveled. After all, as female investors, this business has always been about empowering other women. The Chapters - The Only Woman in the Room There is so much wisdom in these chapters. Feel free to pick and choose or skip around but be sure to read each and every one of them. You will learn something from each one of these successful female real estate investors. You will notice one common thread in the book and that is each of these women give back to other women and to their communities in some way. 1. The Key to Financial Freedom by Ashley L. Wilson I love this chapter because it's about living life on your terms. Ashley describes the actual moment when she realized the stunningly small number of female investors in this business which led her to write this book. She also has some powerful statistics on the gender divide when it comes to wages, reluctance to invest, education and so much more. This is a chapter that will open your eyes to the challenges women have always faced but are discussed front and center in this book. 2. Overcoming Adversity and Setbacks to Build a Multi-Million Dollar Portfolio by Anna Kelley Anna Kelley's story really drives home that it doesn't matter where you start from. It's where you end up that matters. She understands both traditional and non-traditional investments and has purchased, renovated, and rented millions of dollars in real estate all while working a full-time job and raising four children. If you struggle with venturing into the unknown, her advice is to muster up the determination and grit to relentlessly pursue your dreams, come hell or high water. 3. Life by Design by Grace Yarber If you've ever wondered how someone creates their perfect life; one where you are free to travel while building a business, you'll find out in this chapter. Grace did it by spending an entire weekend to map out her ideal life. Once she had her plan it was a matter of implementing it one step at a time. Grace eventually left her full-time job and joined her husband in his business which was flipping single-family homes while keeping some as rentals. Grace realized that passive income through rentals was her ticket to her perfect life. 4. Wasting Youth on Real Estate Brittany Arnason After high school, Brittany Arnason spent a few years backpacking solo around the world. She bought her first house when she was 18 years old and is a believer in DIY renovations. She has always lived her life by this philosophy, “You're only young once” and has built her business around this core philosophy of living her life to the fullest. Her focus is long-term buy-and-hold rental properties. Her portfolio consists of single-family homes, duplexes, apartments, and self-storage facilities. 5. Reinventing Yourself by Patricia Red Hawk, MD Patricia Red Hawk has such an interesting background, to sum it up in a paragraph would just not be possible. She put herself through college eventually going to medical school where she got that coveted “MD” after her name. After a few years, she decided medicine wasn't where she wanted to focus her time, so she moved on. Along the way Patricia served in the California Army National Guard which included a tour of the Middle East, she was a general contractor and is now a kick-ass, innovative real estate investor. Patricia utilizes many investing strategies including BRRRR, fix-and-flip, value add/forced appreciation, and wholesaling. 7. Getting Started by Deborah Nye People come to real estate investing through many different paths. Deborah points out some things that as investors we know are truths. Certain things don't matter your education your age, your background, your financial situation, or your current circumstances. They have no effect on your ability to build a successful real estate investing business. What does matter is your ability to build a team, educate yourself, have a goal, and act. Deborah has purchased both single-family homes as well as large multi-unit buildings. 7. Allow Your Why to Guide Strategy by Gertrude Mageza I love that Gertrude Mageza starts right out of the gate with, “Begin with your why.” When things get tough (and they will) your why is the thing that will carry you through those times and propel you toward success. As she points out, real estate is not a get-rich-quick business. It is a build wealth slowly business. Grace lays out the first steps, doing your first deal, and the many steps in the middle on the way to building and scaling a successful business. Grace grew her business from two units to seventy units in just twelve months and now has a multi-million-dollar investment business. 8. Transitioning to an Entrepreneur by Palak Shah Palak beautifully lays out the struggles of having a baby in her 30s while working a demanding corporate job as an engineer. Taking the leap of faith to leave your corporate job behind and dive headfirst into entrepreneurship is not an easy decision. She lays out the formula for becoming a single-income family. Palak also dives deep into the bottlenecks she encountered along the way and how she solved them. These are very much the same bottlenecks most investors encounter along the way, so these are valuable lessons. Palak has invested in real estate for many years. It is her passion to empower other investors to pursue entrepreneurship through real estate investing to live an empowered and financially free life. 9. Channeling to Profits by Rebecca Shea. We are two marketing nerds (Beka and me) and I love her for that. Beka Shea is a former mechanical engineer. Prior to real estate investing she also served as an officer in the US Navy. We all know that marketing is how you get leads in the door, but how do you actually do that? What you'll learn from my friend Beka is that you'd better know your numbers if you're going to be successful. It's up to you to dig into the data and cut the fat out as she would say. In her chapter, Beka gives you a crash course on marketing channels, which numbers are important in your business, and on exactly how to begin to understand the power of data when it comes to growing your business. Beka has rehabbed over 60 houses and wholesaled over 120 deals. 10. Construction Management Tools by Andresa Guidelli If you want to know about construction management, Andresa Guidelli is your person. She is not only smart, but she is brave and bold as you will learn in her story. She left home at 14 to attend tech school in Brazil while learning English at night. Over the years she got her college degree as well as her master's degree. You are going to get some tips in this chapter on choosing GOOD contractors, managing your projects, procedures to follow, a detailed list of what you need to give your contractor, negotiation tips, and so much more. This chapter is pure gold. Andresa is a developer who specializes in full gut renovation projects, new construction and is focusing on building medium to larger commercial development projects. She owns a rental portfolio of both short and long-term rentals. Andresa is the co-founder of InvestHER. 11. Strategic Moments to Build an Empire by Liz Faircloth Like so many people, Liz Faircloth thought she knew exactly what she wanted to do in life when everything changed. One of those pivotal moments was when she read the book Rich Dad Poor Dad. Like so many people, this book changed the way she thought. The secure career path she had carved out with her college education no longer worked for her. Liz goes over six strategic moments in this chapter that forever changed her life below: Observe the masses and do the opposite Get your first deal done fast by finding tired landlords Live below your means Focus, focus, focus Know when to expand beyond your comfort zone Launching the Real Estate InvestHer Movement Liz co-founded her company with her husband, and they now control close to 700 units of commercial and residential assets. Liz is also the co-founder of InvestHER. 12. The Fruit of Consistent Hard Work by Rebecca Rynkiewicz Like so many women, Rebecca found herself starting over in her hometown after her divorce. She had been living a life by default, not by design and she was determined to change that. Rebecca had her real estate license, so she made a game plan and followed 3 simple steps every day. She had some tough times before turning the corner, but she did turn things around. Along the way she met 3 friends that started a house flipping business which allowed her to learn and eventually buy her first flip which she sold for a six-figure payday. Rebecca is a Realtor who is in the top 1% of agents in the Philadelphia area, as well as a rehabber and a wholesaler. 13. Storing Profits by Corinn Altomare Corinn Altomare is a classically trained musician turned real estate investor. How is that for a career pivot? Corinn started in real estate investing by purchasing a triplex occupied by inherited tenants in 2 units. A few months later she bought her second property and began laying down a solid foundation of smaller multi-family properties. She and her husband continued acquiring properties through syndication and eventually moved into recession-resistant self-storage. Corinn will take you through why she loves this type of investment, how to underwrite a self-storage deal, operations, using technology in this business, and more. 14. Acting on Conviction by Kathy Fettke Kathy Fettke has a story to tell that will put tears in your eyes. After her husband got a devastating diagnosis, she needed to make money fast. Kathy had been a stay-at-home mom for years, and now she needed to earn money while her husband focused on getting better. She learned that she could make $600 per month providing room and board to college students, per bed and that's how she got her start in real estate. Kathy also learned how to monetize her weekly radio show which led to doors opening for her that she could have never imagined at the time. Today, Kathy is the co-CEO of Real Wealth, she is a licensed real estate agent, a bestselling author, and an active real estate investor to name just a few things. Her chapter will show you that anyone can turn lemons into lemonade if you are committed. 15. Network Your Way to Millions by April Crossley I love the way April Crossley compares borrowing and lending money to dating. She says, “I don't care how much money you have, if I do not like you, I am not dating…umm…I mean borrowing money from you.” Private money partnerships are all about trust, connection, and mutual respect for each other. And I can tell you that April has mastered this. She learned early on to rely on other people's money for her deals. Why? Because like many people she didn't have any of her own. She was a teenage mom on food stamps, turned healthcare worker, turned real estate investor with college debt. You're going to learn from April how to find private money partners and how to do deals without ever using any of your own money. April flips and wholesales between 20-30 houses per year, owns a portfolio of small multifamily rental properties and is also a private lender. 16. Going Alone by Maria Fristrom What did I learn about Maria Fristrom in this book? That she is funny as hell. Maria left her Silicon Valley job in 2016 in search of balance and financial freedom. She was born in Finland but raised in Sweden. Maria took her husband and toddler and moved to back to Finland where she build a multi-million portfolio of properties in just a couple of years as an income-less stay-at-home-mom of two toddlers. She decided to be different and stage her homes since no one in Finland was staging their properties. Maria has built her business by doing things her way while focusing on buy-and-hold rental apartments using the BRRRR method. 17. Strength in Numbers by Serena Norris Serena Norris' start in real estate could not have been more untraditional. After attending college in Los Angeles then working for a few years as an in-house graphic designer for a high-end men's fashion company, she returned to her family's roots. Both her father and her stepfather were general contractors, so she grew up in and out of remodels at an early age much as I did. I know that's where my love of real estate comes from. Serena began her real estate career as an assistant to a house flipper. Today she is the operations/project manager, interior designer, and in-house broker for the same company that specializes in fix and flip and BRRRR single-family properties where she focuses on building scalable, duplicatable systems. Her team has flipped over $40,000,000 in single-family homes. 18. Working with Your Spouse by Melanie Dupuis Melanie Dupuis and her husband have acquired over 100 apartments/24 properties in just a few short years using creative finance strategies. She was able to quit her full-time job and pursue real estate before turning 40 while raising 3 children. Working with your spouse can be challenging for a lot of people, but she says the best part of working with your spouse is working on your shared goals ad common inspiration together. She has 5 tips in her chapter that will help you succeed as a couple in this business. This is a must-read for couples who work together. 19. Riding the Silver Tsunami by Leka V. Devatha Leka Devatha moved to the US from India more than a decade ago. She had a successful career in fashion merchandising, but it just didn't feel right. Leka left her corporate job in 2014 to pursue what she felt was her true calling. Leka's father was an entrepreneur, and his favorite investment was real estate so it's no surprise that she shared this same passion. Like most new investors, she got off to a bumpy start. But she hung in there and in six years she knocked out sixty-plus real estate transactions and renovated 40 single-family homes. One project she did was an ADF (an adult family home). You may not be familiar with this strategy, but it is a highly profitable niche with tremendous cash flow for property owners. You are supplying the rental property, and someone else has the hassle of running the ADF. 20. Building a Business Through Social Responsibility by Rachel Street Today, Rachel Street is a Realtor, contractor, and television host. She is also the owner of a women-owned construction company offering full construction services and design-driven custom homes. However, that isn't how she started. After the death of her father and the loss of her job at his company, she found herself living on the floor in the bedroom of a shell of a house she intended to rehab. She bought the property without a working kitchen, heat, or air conditioning. She took showers at the gym and was just surviving. Today, Rachel and her company have been widely recognized for their social entrepreneurship and community service, which includes starting a program to provide free renovations and home repair for those in need. This is how she organically grew her business and her brand. Get the Book You can pick up a copy of The Only Woman in the Room on Amazon by Clicking Here. https://www.swordandthescript.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/bab_020_nathan_iglesias.jpeg Nathan Iglesias joined the California Army National Guard right after 9/11 – and after graduating college he essentially spent the next six years on active duty. He was trained as an intelligence officer, attended the military’s language school where he learned Dari, and later deployed to Afghanistan. He eventually came off active duty and was recruited by Google. While he remains a member of the Army National Guard, we talk on this episode today about how he finds balance between these two demanding roles, perhaps more importantly, and how in many ways his career in the Army and at Google complement each other. *Note: *The views Nathan expressed on the show are his along and not necessarily reflective of Google, the California National Guard or the U.S. Army. Sylvia found the military by working as a civil servant for the California National Guard. She said it felt like a family and she wanted to be a part of the community as a service member and decided to join. She was mentored by Lt Col Ralph Page who had nine children and took her under his wing and gave her advice and mentorship as if she was one of his children. He was the one who pushed her to apply for Officer Candidate School. Her career culminated with her reaching the rank of Brigadier General that opened doors up for her and gave her the ability to represent women and the Latina community in a place that before did not have a voice or representation. She and her husband are both veterans and are both members of MOAA. And the primary thing they find important and why they are members is through the information provided by MOAA through email updates and the magazine. MOAA helps them stay current on what is going on in the military and on Capitol Hill and allows them to use their voice to contact various government representatives because they know what is happening. She also talked about the lobbying power of MOAA. We talked more about MOAA’s lobbying power in the first bonus episode with Aniela Szymanski, you can check out that episode here. But another critical important benefit is the transition resources, grants, and scholarships available to members. You can get a scholarship, interest-free loans, grants, and more. But there are also resources for resume writing to help you convert your military resume into something that will help you land a new job outside of the military. They also are connected with LinkedIn that can help connect you and build your network. So many great benefits when you leave military service and beyond. Health care is a program that has been on the forefront of Gen Crokett’s career and something she has been paying attention to after service. Currently, the military is looking into re-organizing the billets for medical care, the Spouse Angle interviewed MOAA representative Karen Ruedisueli to talk specifically about this issue, and the work MOAA was doing. And the voice MOAA provided has forced Congress to take another look at the proposed plan. Brigadier General Sylvia R. Crockett was assigned as the Land Component Commander of the California Army National Guard in October 2014. In this capacity, she is responsible for providing command and control over all non-divisional units in California. The units consist of five brigade-level commands and include the 1106th Theater Aviation Sustainment Maintenance Group, 49th Military Police Brigade, 115th Regional Support Group, 223rd Regional Training Institute, and the California Army National Guard Medical Command.General Crockett enlisted in the California Air National Guard as a supply technician in 1982. After serving two years with the 129th Rescue Wing, she transferred to the California Army National Guard to attend the California Military Academy. She was commissioned in 1985 as an Adjutant Corps Officer and subsequently became branch qualified as a Military Intelligence Officer. The 1992 Los Angeles riots were a series of riots and civil disturbances that occurred in Los Angeles County in April and May 1992. Unrest began in South Central Los Angeles on April 29, after a trial jury acquitted four officers of the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) for usage of excessive force in the arrest and beating of #RodneyKing, which had been videotaped and widely viewed in TV broadcasts. #LosAngelesRiots The rioting spread throughout the Los Angeles metropolitan area, as thousands of people rioted over a six-day period following the announcement of the verdict. Widespread looting, assault, arson, and murder occurred during the riots, which local police could not control due to lack of personnel and resources against the sheer number of rioters. The complete disorder in the Los Angeles area was only resolved after the California Army National Guard, the United States military, and several federal law enforcement agencies intervened. By the time the riots ended, 63 people had been killed, 2,383 people had been injured, more than 12,000 had been arrested, and estimates of property damage were over $1 billion. LAPD Chief of Police Daryl Gates, who had already announced his resignation by the time of the riots, was attributed with much of the blame.[4][5] #LatashaHarlins weki --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/vegansteven/message

In the first 1/2 hour of The Tami Jackson Show* I will be talking to Kurt Schlichter. Schlichter is the principal trial counsel of Schlichter & Shonack, LLP, and a graduate of Loyola Law School. Kurt's a veteran with a masters in Strategic Studies from the United States Army War College, an Infantry colonel in the California Army National Guard and a veteran of Desert Storm and Kosovo, and a former stand-up comic. Kurt has been published in the New York Post, Washington Examiner, Los Angeles Times, Washington Times, and elsewhere. He has also been a guest on Fox News, the Hugh Hewitt Show, and the Dennis Miller Show, among others. He loves military history, red meat and the Second Amendment. His favorite caliber is .45. Kurt is married to Irina, has two children, and lives in the South Bay Los Angeles area. Kurt and I will have some fun discussing two of his recent columns at Townhall.com, "Let's All Savor The Democrats' Pervgate Pain" and Dating Tips For Prominent Democrats." You haven't lived until you've heard Kurt expound on all things liberal -- he has the knowledge, the humor, and the spine one would expect from an Army Colonel, to speak up and say the things that too many mealy-mouthed pundits won't. Prepare to laugh and feel good about being a conservative. And remember to use the hashtag #Caring. ************************** In the second 1/2 hour my guest will be Robert Alt. Robert Alt is the President and Chief Executive Officer of The Buckeye Institute, where he also serves on the Board of Trustees. Alt's leadership has been the catalyst for The Buckeye Institute's exponential growth since he took the organization's helm in 2012. He has since founded The Buckeye Institute's esteemed Economic Research Center and Legal Center, from which the Buckeye team not only imagines public policy victories but compels them with sound data, objective research, and strategic litigation. Alt is a nationally recognized scholar with expertise in legal policy including criminal justice, national security, and constitutional law. Prior to heading The Buckeye Institute, Alt was a Director in the Center for Legal and Judicial Studies serving under former U.S. Attorney General Edwin Meese III at The Heritage Foundation, where he regularly advised Members of Congress and Supreme Court litigants on complex legal arguments and strategy. Alt is a frequent speaker at dozens of universities and law schools across the country, and his writings have appeared in The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Times, New York Post, U.S. News & World Report, The San Diego Union-Tribune, and SCOTUSblog. Alt is a longtime contributor to National Review Online, where he has published more than 100 articles and blogs. He has provided commentary on CNN, Fox News Channel, PBS and its affiliates, and numerous syndicated radio programs. In 2004, Alt spent five months in Iraq as a war correspondent. Alt is an attorney admitted to the bars of Ohio and the U.S. Courts of Appeals for the Sixth and D.C. Circuits, a member of the Mont Pelerin Society, the U.S. Supreme Court Historical Society, and a former Fellow in the Center for Constitutional Jurisprudence at the Claremont Institute where he was also a Publius Fellow in 1998. Alt earned his J.D. from The University of Chicago Law School, where he was Symposium Editor and the winner of the Mulroy Prize for Excellence in Appellate Advocacy as well as Research Assistant to renowned law professor Richard Epstein. Following law school, he clerked for Judge Alice Batchelder on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit. Alt graduated with his B.A. in political science and philosophy magna cum laude from Azusa Pacific University where he won the Outstanding Senior Award in Political Science. Robert and I will discuss his informative article, It's Time For Public Sector Workers To Be Given A Voice And Choice. As written in the article: Every morning, hardworking men and women in every state drink their coffee and diligently go to work on our behalf—in our neighborhoods as public school teachers, home care workers, engineers, and in agencies protecting the environment. Unfortunately, while these civic-minded professionals go to work for us, the labor unions that they must join in order to teach our children or serve our communities do not always work for them. Once a public-sector union is certified, it remains the workers' representative—potentially forever. In Ohio, for example, the Columbus Education Association has represented Columbus public school teachers since 1968—back when the Beatles were still together and before many of today's teachers were even born. Heirloom unions inherited from the Nixon-era are depriving today's public workers and civil servants of any meaningful voice or choice in their workplace. Ninety-four percent of union workers have never had the chance to vote for or against their unions Read more at The Buckeye Institute's project site Worker Voting Rights. On August 11, 1965, an African-American was pulled over for allegedly drunk driving in a predominantly black neighborhood in Los Angeles. The man behind the wheel was Marquette Frye and was arrested by two white police officers for reckless driving. The situation escalated when Frye’s mother arrived at the scene of the arrest and a crowd of spectators gathered at the corner of the street. Premeditated distrust for the police force and acts of physical aggression led the witnesses to believe that this arrest was yet another incident of racially motivated police brutality. A dangerous and violent six days followed, as the community rioted together against police racism and unwarranted brutality. The riots resulted in 34 deaths and over 40 million dollars in property damage; it was the city’s worst unrest until the infamous Rodney King riots in 1992. Leading up to societal revolt, Los Angeles racially prohibited minorities from renting or buying property in certain areas and ethnically divided the city. This caused a racism battle within property and many white people believed in the stereotypical assumptions of black men; that included the LAPD. When the riots began, chief of police, William H. Parker called for assistance from the California Army National Guard. Thousands of law enforcers attempted to maintain order on the streets but only further escalated the furiousness of the community. "The streets of Watts resembled an all-out war zone in some far-off foreign country, it bore no resemblance to the United States of America." White-owned stores were looted and burned down as over 31,000 participated in the riots while 70,000 were “sympathetic, but not active.” For far too many years, African Americans held their heads high as they were oppressed and discriminated by society. The morally unsound act of racism has haunted the United States since its birth. The Civil Rights movement was the triumphant and powerful impact created by African Americans in hope for change. While many acts were peaceful, some were violent as the fury from being oppressed bottled over when police use their power to intentionally harass, beat and kill African Americans. The issue of police brutality still runs hot and the Watts Riots played part in not only pushing for civil rights, but also righteously demanding it. Police brutality is a dishonorable and disgusting act that cannot continue. How many lives does it take to end this conflict? We are equal, that is no debate. Frye, King, Till and Martin are only a few of the victims of police brutality. Regardless of the color of a man’s skin, there is no excuse. The Watts Riots was a reflection and reaction of the Civil Rights movement and the unhurriedness of the government to make drastic and desperate changes.

The Watts Riots-1965 The Watts riots took place in the Watts neighborhood of Los Angeles from August 11 to 17, 1965. On August 11, 1965, 21-year-old Marquette Frye, an African American man behind the wheel of his mother's 1955 Buick, was arrested for drunk driving. A minor roadside argument broke out, and then escalated into a fight. The community reacted in outrage, and six days of looting and arson followed. Los Angeles police needed the support of nearly 4,000 members of the California Army National Guard to quell the riots, which resulted in 34 deaths and over $40 million in property damage. The riots were blamed principally on police racism. It was the city's worst unrest until the Rodney King riots of 1992. In the Great Migration of the 1920s, major populations of African-American moved to Northern and Midwestern cities like Detroit, Chicago, St. Louis, Cincinnati, Philadelphia, Boston, and New York City to pursue jobs in newly established manufacturing industries; to establish better educational and social opportunities; and to flee racial segregation, Jim Crow Laws, violence, and racial bigotry in the Southern States. This wave of migration largely bypassed Los Angeles. In the 1940s, in the Second Great Migration, black Americans migrated to the West Coast in large numbers, in response to defense industry recruitment efforts at the start of World War II. The black population in Los Angeles leapt from approximately 63,700 in 1940 to about 350,000 in 1965, making the once-small black community visible to the general public.
It's a Magnum P.I. Reunion! Tom Selleck Joins the Show!Thomas William "Tom" Selleck (born January 29, 1945) is an American actor and film producer. He is best known for his starring role as the private investigator Thomas Magnum in the television series Magnum, P.I. (1980 to 1988), based in Hawaii. He also plays Police Chief Jesse Stone in a series of made-for-TV movies based on Robert B. Parker novels. Since 2010, he has appeared as NYPD Police Commissioner Frank Reagan in the drama Blue Bloods on CBS-TV.Selleck has appeared in more than fifty film and television roles since his initial success with Magnum, P.I., including a co-starring role in the highest-grossing movie of 1987, Three Men and a Baby; Quigley Down Under; Mr. Baseball; and Lassiter, to name a few. Selleck has also appeared as Dr. Richard Burke on Friends, where he played the on-again, off-again love-interest of Monica Geller (Courteney Cox), and A.J. Cooper on Las Vegas.Early lifeSelleck was born in Detroit, Michigan, the son of Martha S. (née Jagger), a housewife, and Robert Dean Selleck (died 2001), who was an executive and real estate investor. His father was of English and distant German ancestry, and his mother was of English descent. Selleck's family moved to Sherman Oaks, California, during his childhood. Tom's siblings include brother Robert (born 1944), sister Martha (born 1953) and brother Daniel (born 1955). Selleck graduated from Grant High School, in 1962.Along with modeling, Selleck attended the University of Southern California on a basketball scholarship where he played for the USC Trojans men's basketball team. He is a member of Sigma Chi fraternity and a member of the Trojan Knights. While he majored in business administration, a drama coach suggested Selleck try acting. He then studied acting at the Beverly Hills Playhouse, under Milton Katselas.Selleck served as a soldier in the 160th Infantry Regiment of the California Army National Guard and his unit was activated for the Watts Riots in Los Angeles.CareerEarly work and Magnum P.I.Selleck's first TV appearance was as a college senior on The Dating Game in 1965, and again in 1967. Soon after, he appeared in commercials for products such as Pepsi-Cola.He began his career with bit parts in smaller movies, including Myra Breckinridge and The Seven Minutes. He also appeared in number of TV series, mini-series and TV movies. Selleck also had a recurring role in the 1970s as "too good to be true" private investigator Lance White in The Rockford Files. Lance was very trusting and always lucky, much to the annoyance of Jim Rockford, the show's star private eye played by James Garner. White would frequently say to Rockford, "Don't worry Jim, clues will turn up" and then a clue would just turn up, much to Rockford's consternation, for whom obtaining clues required hard work and hard knocks. Selleck's character was based on one played in Garner's earlier TV series Maverick (1957) by Wayde Preston in the episode "The Saga of Waco Williams".Selleck, an accessible but relatively untested actor, spent years receiving little interest from the entertainment industry. His big break came when he was cast in the lead role as Thomas Magnum in Magnum, P.I.. The producers would not release the actor for other projects, so Selleck had to pass on the equally enticing film project for the role of Indiana Jones in "Raiders of the Lost Ark", which then went to rising star Harrison Ford. The choice between the roles of Indiana Jones and Magnum actually haunted Selleck so much that before making the decision, he consulted his best friend on what to do. Together they came to the conclusion taking the high road and honoring the first contract with Universal Studios was the career-savvy direction. It turned out shooting of the pilot for Magnum was delayed for over six months by a writers' strike, which would have enabled him to complete "Raiders".FilmSelleck starred in the 1979 TV movie Concrete Cowboys with Jerry Reed. He starred in a number of film roles during and after Magnum; among the most notable were as an acrophobic police detective in Runaway; as a stand-in father in Three Men and a Baby; and as an American 19th century sharpshooter in the Australian western Quigley Down Under – a role and film that he considers one of his best. His other films include Three Men and a Little Lady; High Road to China; Lassiter; Coma; Her Alibi; An Innocent Man; Folks!; Christopher Columbus: The Discovery; Mr. Baseball; In & Out and The Love Letter.Selleck is an avid outdoorsman, and a marksman and knowledgeable firearms collector. These interests led him to leading-man cowboy roles in Western films, starting with his role as cowboy and frontier marshal Orrin Sackett in the 1979 film The Sacketts, opposite Sam Elliott, Jeff Osterhage, and Western legendsGlenn Ford and Ben Johnson. He followed The Sacketts with The Shadow Riders in 1982, then portraying a cat burglar in 1930s London in Lassiter in 1984.Quigley Down Under is probably one of his best known Western films, however he also won a "Western Heritage Award" for his 1997 role in Last Stand at Sabre River. His last two cowboy roles to date were in the 2001 TNT movie Crossfire Trail (based on a Louis L'Amour novel of the same name), and the 2003 motion picture Monte Walsh. He most recently appeared in the film Killers, along with Katherine Heigl and Ashton Kutcher.TelevisionMagnum P.I.Selleck played the role of Thomas Magnum in 1980 after six failed TV pilots. Magnum was a former U.S. Navy Officer, a veteran of a special operations unit in the Vietnam War, who had resigned his commission with the Office of Naval Intelligence and become a private investigator living in Hawaii. The show would go on for eight seasons and 162 episodes until 1988, winning him an Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series in 1984. Selleck was famous for his mustache, a Hawaiian-style aloha shirt, a Detroit Tigers baseball cap, and the Colt Model 1911A1 .45 ACP Caliber pistol his character carried. Magnum drove a Ferrari 308GTSi in the series. The model became so identified with the role that Ferrari fans now refer to the red-painted model as a "Magnum" Ferrari.Selleck has confirmed that he is the most popular choice by fans to play the role of Magnum in the rumoured upcoming Magnum P.I. movie.FriendsIn the late nineties, Selleck played the role of Richard Burke, Monica's boyfriend, at the end of the second season of the hugely successful TV series Friends. Richard was a divorced ophthalmologist who was a friend of Monica's parents, and at first the relationship was hidden from her parents. The relationship eventually ended over Richard's reluctance to commit to raising a family, though Selleck did make a few extra appearances in later shows. The CloserIn February 1998, Selleck accepted the lead role in a sitcom for CBS called The Closer. In it he played Jack McLaren, a legendary publicist heading up a brand new marketing firm. His costars included Ed Asner, David Krumholtz, and Penelope Ann Miller. Despite the high pedigree, and the expectations for his first series since Magnum, P. I., low ratings caused the show to be canceled after ten episodes.Jesse Stone seriesSince 2005, Selleck has starred in the role of transplanted lawman Jesse Stone in a series of made-for-TV movies based on Robert B. Parker's novels. To date, the series comprises eight films, with the most recent released on May 20, 2012. In addition to his portrayal of the films' protagonist, Selleck now also acts as producer for the series. The fifth film, Jesse Stone: Thin Ice, was not adapted from Parker's novels, but rather an original story by Selleck.Las VegasHe joined the cast of the NBC drama Las Vegas in the season-five premiere on September 28, 2007. He played A.J. Cooper, the new owner of the Montecito Casino. He replaced James Caanwho left the cast in the same episode. This was Selleck's first regular role on a drama show since he played Thomas Magnum on Magnum, P.I..Blue BloodsBlue Bloods is an American police procedural/drama series on CBS, filmed on location in New York City. Frank Reagan (Selleck) is the Police Commissioner; the series follows the Reagan family of police officers with the New York City Police Department. The show premiered on September 24, 2010.Other workSelleck has also appeared in a number of made-for-TV movies in recent years. In particular, he has sought to help bring back to popularity the western, often playing one of that genre's typical characters but thrust into a modern context.Selleck was offered the lead role of Mitch Buchannon in Baywatch, but turned down the role because he did not want to be seen as a sex symbol. The role eventually went to David Hasselhoff.Surprising many of his fans, Selleck unexpectedly played the role of General Dwight D. Eisenhower in A&E's 2004 made-for-TV movie Ike: Countdown to D-Day. The movie showed the planning, politics, and preparation for the 1944 Invasion of Normandy, and Selleck was critically lauded for playing a cool, calm Eisenhower.Selleck appeared in a recurring role on the acclaimed ABC drama Boston Legal as Ivan Tiggs—the troubled ex-husband of Shirley Schmidt (Candice Bergen)—and as novelist Robert B. Parker's character Jesse Stone in several CBS made-for-TV movies, earning a 2007 Emmy nomination for Jesse Stone: Sea Change.BroadwayIn 2001, Selleck played the lead role of Murray in a Broadway revival of Herb Gardner's comedic play A Thousand Clowns. It ran for only two months. Critics, though far from uniformly negative about Selleck's performance, generally compared it unfavorably to that of Jason Robards, Jr., who won awards in the 1960s for playing the character on the stage and in a movie version. (It remains the role with which Robards is most identified.) Playwright Gardner, however, actually preferred Selleck to Robards in the part, and even said that Selleck was the way he had always envisioned Murray.
