A Quick Notes to Listeners: Before this week’s episode, Will Parker and Jen Schwanke take some time to answer a listener question. This week’s question is: How do I manage parents (without losing my patience) who come to conversations with the assumption that educators cannot be trusted? Listen in to hear their response! Meet John Spencer: Dr. John Spencer is a former middle school teacher and current college professor who is passionate about seeing students reach their creative potential. He is the author of the bestselling books Launch, Empower, and Vintage Innovation, and The A.I. Roadmap. In 2013, he spoke at the White House, sharing a vision for how to empower students to be future-ready through deeper learning and creativity. In this episode of Principal Matters, Dr. Jen Schwanke and Dr. John Spencer engage in a fascinating, wide-ranging conversation that touches on nearly every critical aspect of modern education. While anchored in the core practices of effective teaching and leadership, their discussion also dives deep into a rich array of interconnected topics. They explore the nuances of AI in schools—from its impact on academic integrity and educational technology to its potential to unlock student agency and creativity. The conversation also weaves in the essential human elements of education, examining the roles of emotional intelligence, practical teacher training, and meaningful professional development. This episode is guaranteed to be entertaining and insightful, but more than anything, it will be inspiring. To begin, Dr. Spencer details his compelling professional journey, tracing his path from a dedicated middle school teacher to his current multifaceted roles as an educational consultant, keynote speaker, accomplished author, and university professor. Drawing from his extensive experience teaching and supporting preservice teachers, John discusses the critical skills that new educators must possess to be successful. He offers invaluable, practical insights specifically tailored for principals and school leaders who are responsible for mentoring and guiding these new members of the profession. From there, Jen and John dive deep into the prevalent misconceptions surrounding artificial intelligence in education. They specifically address the inherent risks and flawed logic that come with an over-emphasis on trying to “catch” students who might be “cheating” with AI tools. Instead of a punitive approach, John stresses the fundamental importance of fostering creativity and enhancing student agency. He persuasively argues that AI should be viewed as a powerful tool that can assist with, and even amplify, both of these critical educational goals. To that end, he emphasizes the urgent need for educators to proactively adapt to new and emerging technologies. However, he cautions that this adaptation must be balanced with a steadfast commitment to maintaining emotional intelligence and intentionally fostering genuine joy within the classroom environment. The wide-ranging conversation also touches on the broader challenges that modern educators face today, while concluding on a hopeful note about the profound promise of innovation in the teaching profession. Last week, the pair spoke with foremost urban warfare expert John Spencer and Borschel-Dan noted that a term -- “nation-building” -- was raised repeatedly. In this week's episode, we explore this concept, starting with defining the term. We hear about previous models of nation-building, starting from Japan and Germany, following their defeats in World War II. We learn how these attempts were successful -- and former enemies quickly turned into allies. We then turn to more recent history with the West's attempts to reshape Afghanistan and Iraq. What were the differences between the two wars and their aftermaths? And finally, Berman applies the lessons learned in these previous attempts at nation-building and conjectures how they could -- or could not -- be applied in Gaza. This week, the duo is joined by military expert John Spencer, chair of War Studies at the Madison Policy Forum and executive director of the Urban Warfare Institute. As of recording time, some 100-200 Hamas terrorists are estimated to be holed up in tunnels in southern Gaza on the Israeli side of the Yellow Line. The US has pressured Israel to allow the terrorists safe passage back to Hamas-held areas of Gaza, though Israel has not agreed to such a solution as of yet. For the first part of our conversation, we plumb the depths of the extensive Hamas tunnel network, speaking about its scope and how the IDF is able to destroy or at least neutralize its many tentacles. In the second half, we speak about where the current ceasefire in Gaza may turn, as reports are circulated about a two-year mandate for an International Security Force that could be implemented to demilitarize Hamas. Spencer gives bad -- and better -- examples of international forces and discusses why UNIFIL, the force deployed in southern Lebanon, was destined to failure. The USS Somers: Midshipman Philip Spencer's Pirate Obsession and Captain Mackenzie's Taste for Violence.Richard Snow's book, Sailing the Graveyard Sea, recounts the 1842 voyage of the USS Somers, the US Navy's only mutiny. The mutiny centered on Midshipman Philip Spencer, born in 1824, son of prominent lawyer John Spencer. Philip was a difficult, unruly dreamer who withdrew into pirate stories, donating the massive The Pirate's Own Book to his school library. His father secured Philip a naval berth, hoping strict discipline would reform him. Spencer joined as a junior midshipman and quickly became isolated. He was walleyed, giving him a "slightly scary gaze" that could be interpreted as untrustworthy. The commander was Lieutenant Alexander Slidell Mackenzie, whose fame rested on A Year in Spain, largely ghostwritten by Washington Irving. Despite his respectable marriage, Mackenzie harbored a "tragic detail": he was a violent, flogging captain who wrote with "lubricious detail" about attending public hangings. The Somersset sail in September 1842 for Africa with a crew of 120, consisting of only 30 mature sailors. 1861

Richard Henry Dana fully supported Mackenzie, describing him as saintly and honorable. The court of inquiry agreed that Mackenzie had behaved honorably. However, Mackenzie surprisingly sought a formal court-martial because John Spencer and Seaman Small's wife were pressuring for a civil murder trial. The court-martial ran from February 2 to March 31 and initially concluded that Mackenzie was honorably acquitted and heroic. However, President Tyler intervened, refusing to endorse the verdict and believing Mackenzie should have been hanged as a murderer. Mackenzie was acquitted and avoided a murder trial, but his honor was tarnished. Snow recommends readers act as the jury to decide Mackenzie's actions. Retry

Now that there is a fragile cease-fire in place, it's time to ask what to do with Gaza's intricate system of tunnels. There is, of course, nothing new about the use of tunnels in war. From ancient Jerusalem to Vietnam to Islamic State in Mosul, militaries have dealt with underground warfare for millennia. But the scale, purpose, and strategic role of Hamas's tunnel network is fundamentally different from anything we've seen before. Gaza is approximately 140 square miles, and there are at least 600 miles of tunnels below its terrain. Before the war began, there were likely more tunnels in Gaza than there were roads. But it's not just the density of Gaza's tunnels that is unprecedented. For the first time in history, a military force built its entire strategy around its subterranean defenses, deliberately constructing tunnels beneath civilian infrastructure—schools, hospitals, homes—not to protect civilians, but to use them as human shields. This wasn't merely a tactical decision; it was the primary means by which Hamas intended to achieve its political goals. John Spencer, a leading expert on urban warfare and military history and executive director of the Urban Warfare Institute, joins the Tikvah Podcast to discuss this unprecedented military challenge. He has visited Gaza six times since October 7, studying these tunnels firsthand and speaking with the Israeli commanders who've had to fight in them. Today, he walks us through how Israeli forces had to remap the battlefield and reimagine warfare, learning to fight simultaneously above and below ground. We'll discuss the psychological demands of entering these tunnels, the innovative tactics that turned Hamas's greatest defensive asset into an Israeli offensive advantage, and the immense challenge that remains: what do you do with hundreds of miles of tunnels now that active hostilities have paused?

In this episode of The Winston Marshall Show, I sit down with Colonel John Spencer, one of the world's leading experts on urban warfare, to break down the brutal realities of the Israel–Hamas war.Spencer explains how the October 7 invasion was more than a terror attack – it was a coordinated military operation, backed by Iran and linked to Hezbollah. He describes in detail how Hamas used tunnel networks, IEDs, and human shields to wage war inside Gaza, deliberately drawing civilians into the battlefield to create global outrage against Israel. We discuss the IDF's strategy, from their full-scale ground invasion on October 27 to the unprecedented measures taken to warn and evacuate civilians – even at the cost of prolonging the war. Spencer also reveals why Gaza has become the first modern “tunnel war”, why snipers and booby-trapped homes shaped the conflict, and how Israel managed to hold off threats across multiple fronts, from Hezbollah in Lebanon to Iran itself. This is a rare, insider military analysis of the Gaza war – exposing the tactics, strategies, and propaganda battles that most of the media ignore.-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------To see more exclusive content and interviews consider subscribing to my substack here: https://www.winstonmarshall.co.uk/-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------FOLLOW ME ON SOCIAL MEDIA:Substack: https://www.winstonmarshall.co.uk/X: https://twitter.com/mrwinmarshallInsta: https://www.instagram.com/winstonmarshallLinktree: https://linktr.ee/winstonmarshall----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Chapters 0:00 Introduction 4:27 Coordination of the October 7 Invasion 8:17 Hezbollah's Role and Hamas' Strategy 21:08 Hamas' Military Capabilities and Tactics35:14 IDF's Response and Strategic Decisions56:56 The Evolution of the Conflict and Hamas' Survival1:05:01 The Impact of Foreign Military Aid 1:11:52 The Role of Egypt and Humanitarian Considerations1:15:25 Vaccination Campaigns and Perceptions in Gaza1:25:19 Humanitarian Aid and Hamas' Control1:41:56 Jordanian and Egyptian Aid Efforts1:45:47 Resistance Within Gaza1:54:20 The Trump Peace Plan 1:59:49 Hamas' Incentives and Challenges 2:10:08 Netanyahu's Leadership During the War2:13:09 Final Thoughts and Future Outlook Hosted on Acast. Project-based learning can be a powerful instructional framework, but it is often structured in ways that exclude students who need a different approach. Too often, PBL becomes a space where accommodations and differentiation fall by the wayside. The good news is that we don't have to abandon PBL or dramatically overhaul it to make it work for diverse learners. In this episode, author and educator John Spencer shares five small but thoughtful structural changes we can make that will allow every student to thrive in a project-based environment. ______________________________________________________________ Thanks to EVERFI and Listenwise for sponsoring this episode. Eliot and Eric welcome John Spencer, Chair of Urban Warfare Studies with the Madison Policy Forum and Co-Director of the Urban Warfare Project and author of numerous articles and studies of urban and subterranean warfare. They discuss the unique characteristics of urban warfare, the traditional U.S. military approach to urban warfare as well as historical examples from the U.S.-Mexican War in the 19th Century to more recent examples like the Battle of Aachen in World War II and the Battles of Baghdad, Fallujah, and Sadr City during the Iraq War. Based on Spencer's multiple trips to Israel and Gaza, they also discuss how the Israeli Defense Forces have attempted to deal with the even more difficult urban warfare conditions in Gaza including the more than 400 miles of tunnels that created enormously complicated problems for Israeli forces attempting to destroy Hamas's 24 battalions of some 30 to 40 thousand fighters and the inevitable impact that has on civilian populations. They also discuss the information or cognitive warfare dimension of fighting on urban terrain and the difficulties Israel has had in that regard. Shield of the Republic is a Bulwark podcast co-sponsored by the Miller Center of Public Affairs at the University of Virginia.

But this routine exercise ended in catastrophe. Commander Alexander Slidell Mackenzie came ashore claiming he had prevented a mutiny that would have left him and his officers dead. Some of the thwarted mutineers were being held under guard, but three had already been hanged at sea: Boatswain's Mate Samuel Cromwell, Seaman Elisha Small, and Acting Midshipman Philip Spencer, whose father was the secretary of war, John Spencer. 1841
