The work of an artist isn't much different from other pursuits. You have to plan, react to change, and it doesn't hurt if you're in the right place at the right time. This week, we talk with cartoonist and one of the organizers of Cartoon Crossroads Columbus, Jeff Smith, to discuss the origins of his character Bone, the importance of getting buy-in to those that you're accountable to, what it was like to have Bone get picked up by Netflix, and what the virtual Cartoon Crossroads Columbus will look like this year. As we level up at making things, we might be called upon (or feel a calling) to share our knowledge and experience with others. But how do you unpack what you do in order to help others understand how to do it for themselves? How can we use perspective taking and self-interview to help create an experience that will lead others to their own leveling up and coming back for more? Designer, editor and publisher Francoise Mouly joins the show to talk about 20+ years of New Yorker covers, launching TOON Books and cultivating a love for print, the pros and cons of going viral, the changing definitions of what's offensive (and the time she got hauled into a meeting with an Arab Anti-Defamation League), the notion that comics are the gateway drug for reading, and more! (Sorry, no talk about her time with RAW magazine, since she and her husband, Art Spiegelman were interviewed about that later at the festival.) This episode is part of our Cartoon Crossroads Columbus series of live podcasts.
Dylan Horrocks, the cartoonist behind Hicksville (Drawn and Quarterly) and Sam Zabel And The Magic Pen (Fantagraphics), comes from New Zealand to join the show to talk about his fear of comics, our responsibility for our fantasies, the way he built a fruitful career around creative block, the influence of Maori culture on white New Zealanders' perspectives, the way his backup stories keep becoming his major projects, his take on the Charlie Hebdo massacre and how it ties into his experience with the fatwa on Salman Rushdie, the idea that America is a story we tell ourselves, and more! The Surviving Creativity crew is back from another long convention run, and we've brought Steve Hamaker with us to talk about a brand new show we attended in Columbus, OH. This of course leads us into the curation of conventions, artists getting pumped, and collecting AOL discs. All in all, another thrilling episode of Surviving Creativity!
