Most people think they know what to do with their money. Spend less than you make. Save for retirement. Pay off debt. But if those strategies really worked, why are so many hardworking people still broke, stressed, and stuck? In this episode of The Tactical Empire Podcast, Jeff Smith and Shawn Rider break down the truth about financial freedom. They reveal why average advice leads to average results, why being debt free is not the same as being financially free, and how to shift your mindset to create real wealth for yourself and your family. If you've ever felt like you're doing everything “right” but still can't seem to get ahead, this conversation will challenge everything you thought you knew about money.
For all of the bluster some politicians offer about saluting the service of our veterans, they really show their stripes when it comes time to provide actual services of their own to the men and women who served our nation. We'll talk to Sen. Jeff Smith about how important programs that help homeless veterans in two Wisconsin locations are on the verge of shutting down because Republican legislators took Gov. Evers' state budget request and changed it to $0 — and are somehow trying to blame the governor for it. Mornings with Pat Kreitlow is powered by UpNorthNews, and it airs on several stations across the Civic Media radio network, Monday through Friday from 6-9 am. (00:00) Discussing Golf Instruction and Trends This chapter features a lively discussion about golf, the heat in Florida compared to Nantucket, and the challenges of playing on long, wet courses. We explore the importance of proper golf instruction, expressing concern over unqualified instructors giving poor advice and suggesting the need for a governing body to ensure quality. We also discuss the impact of social media on a golf instructor's reputation and the value of having a large online following, which can significantly increase their rates and demand. Personal anecdotes are shared about experiences with well-known golf instructors and the significance of tailoring fundamentals to individual players' body types. Additionally, we touch on the return of certain golf teaching styles and the importance of listening and learning from seasoned professionals. (08:37) Discussion on Golf Tips and Techniques This chapter brings us into the world of golf instruction and the impact of online tutorials and teaching tools. We discuss the challenges faced by those who rely solely on videos and magazines for golf improvement, sharing anecdotes about how this approach can sometimes lead to confusion rather than progress. Highlighting practical tips from golf publications, we touch on techniques that anyone can try, like using tees for practice or the correct way to utilize impact bags with bubble wrap to improve swing accuracy. The conversation also explores the significance of paying attention to the sound and feel of a golf shot, even at the professional level. We wrap up with some light-hearted banter about nicknames and the humorous quirks of the golfing community, illustrating the camaraderie and humor inherent in the sport. (13:15) Improving Impact With Lightweight Training This chapter explores innovative approaches to improving golf swing techniques using unconventional tools. I share insights on how hitting different materials, like deflated balls and car wash sponges, can enhance a golfer's swing without the risk of injury or damaging equipment. By incorporating lightweight materials such as bubble wrap and inflatable rubber balls into impact bags, we create a practice environment that encourages aggressive yet safe swings. Additionally, we highlight the benefits of using older clubs with metal shafts to prevent damage to modern graphite clubs. We also discuss how professional golfers train with focus on functional strength rather than aesthetics, underscoring the importance of effective impact training over traditional bodybuilding. (18:00) The Impact of Fitness on Golf This chapter focuses on the evolving nature of golf training, highlighting the shift from traditional methods to modern, results-oriented approaches. We explore how contemporary golfers are training not just for skill, but for physical resilience and power, akin to athletes in more physically demanding sports. Through anecdotes about Rory McIlroy and other young athletes, we emphasize the importance of strength and injury prevention, while also addressing the risks of overtraining, as seen in young golfers experiencing injuries typically found in older players. We discuss the implications of this intense training mindset, likening it to the sacrifice-for-success mentality seen in other professional sports, and question the sustainability and health implications for those not at the top echelon. With insights from Jeff Smith and Scott Monroe, we examine how these approaches impact golfers' longevity and propose strategies for balancing ambition with health preservation. (26:59) Debate on Golf Instruction Liability This chapter explores the intricacies and challenges faced by performance coaches in the world of sports, particularly golf. We examine the potential liability coaches might face if their techniques inadvertently lead to player injuries, highlighting the importance of aligning coaching methods with individual player needs. The conversation emphasizes that it's not always about the coach but the information being conveyed and how it matches with the athlete's physical capabilities. The discussion also touches on the unique sounds and techniques of skilled golfers, noting the awe-inspiring noise of a well-struck ball. Furthermore, we explore how high-speed video analysis, while insightful, can sometimes mislead golfers into overanalyzing movements that occur in fractions of a second, potentially harming their performance. Through anecdotes and examples, we underscore the balance between using advanced technology for improvement and maintaining an understanding of the sport's fundamental mechanics. (32:30) Golf Instruction and Trends This chapter explores the impact of technology on golf instruction, emphasizing that the over-reliance on slow-motion analysis may lead to incorrect assumptions about a player's intentions and biomechanics. We discuss the importance of focusing on motion, rhythm, and timing rather than the minutiae of swing mechanics, which can often lead to misinformation and potentially harmful techniques. I stress the need for a more personalized approach to instruction, suggesting that golfers consult with experts like Kelly Stenzel or EA Tishler for assessments that consider individual physical capabilities. This personalized approach helps golfers identify what techniques are suitable for them, enhancing their ability to improve without risking injury.
Jeff Smith, Solid Waste Manager for the borough, and Tam Boeve, Executive Director discuss the return of glass recycling to the recycling center on September 9. The borough bought a glass crusher for the recycling center. This diverts glass from the landfill and provides sand (ground glass) that can be used in construction and other projects.

“The State of Working Wisconsin” Battleground Wisconsin Podcast We welcome Laura Dresser from the High Road Strategy Center, a think-and-do tank, based at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Laura is the lead author of the 2025 State of Working Wisconsin report which presents the Wisconsin workers' perspective on the economy including, what's going on with work and jobs, who is winning in this economy, and who is being left behind. We discuss the report's key findings, including the role a $20/hour minimum wage in Wisconsin could play in improving the lives of Wisconsin working families. We debrief Labor Day 2025, and take a deep dive into Wisconsin's brewing AI Data Center Scandal that could threaten the Great Lakes water supply and accelerate the state's carbon emissions at a time they must be dramatically slashed to head off runaway climate change. In addition to the environmental impact, they are a terrible economic development investment on a par with the Foxconn boondoggle. We also review the scandalous last couple weeks at Ascension Wisconsin which wants to charges such high prices that even United Healthcare is threatening to cut them off. The ongoing implosion of Ascension continues to highlight the need for the Hospital Accountability Act we are developing with state Senator Jeff Smith.

Jeff Smith and Carson Odegard sit down with waterfowl historian Yancey Forest-Knowles to unpack the Sacramento–San Joaquin Delta—its island clubs, levees and tides, and the public access that still lets you chase mallards and specks on big water today. What you'll hearHow the Delta was built — from early private island claims and hand-built levees to today's twin pressures of saltwater intrusion and export pumping.Club lore & big names — Twitchell Island's first club (1880), Venice and Mandeville's eras, and the “Mallard Hole” stories tied to Barron Hilton and Hollywood guests.Flood risk is real — why peat islands subside and how Jones Tract's 2004 failure floated a clubhouse away.Public opportunity — boat-in spots and state-permitted floating blinds at Frank's Tract (plus Big Break, Stone Lakes, Decker & more), and the on-water etiquette that keeps it working.Access rules that matter — anchor next to levees to hunt, but don't set foot on them.Today's mix of ag & restoration — CWA ownership on Quimby and habitat work across Medford, Sherman, and sister islands. From 19th-century market hunts to modern floating blinds, this one maps the Delta's history and gives practical pointers for anyone looking to do it right on big water.

(00:00) Golf Tips & Lobster Dinner Experiences This chapter takes us on a journey through a recent golf outing where John encountered an older golfer struggling with his iron shots. While John suspected ball position might be the issue, he humorously redirected the golfer to Jeff for expert advice. Before diving into golf tips, we switch gears to talk about an unexpected culinary adventure involving live Maine lobsters. Jeff recounts receiving the lobsters from a friend, not realizing they would arrive alive, and the experience of having them cooked to perfection by a club chef. This anecdote transitions into a plug for the Portland Lobster Company, where you can order live lobsters shipped directly to you, accompanied by a reminder to keep those rubber bands on their claws. This episode is a delightful mix of golf advice and culinary surprises, wrapped up with laughter and camaraderie. (10:38) Improving Iron Play Golf Techniques This chapter focuses on improving your golf game by mastering posture and balance, particularly when facing challenges with your iron shots. We explore the importance of maintaining a consistent and balanced posture for every club, from drivers to irons, and how this can significantly impact your swing and ball contact. I share practical tips on setting up your stance, such as checking your grip, ensuring your body and club are in balance, and aligning the ball position correctly relative to your stance. We also address common mistakes golfers make, like altering posture for different clubs, and emphasize that achieving one singular best posture is key to consistent performance on the course. (19:35) Practice Techniques for Better Golf Swing This chapter explores innovative techniques for improving your golf swing without relying on a ball, such as using pennies or tees to focus on swing mechanics and reduce tension. By shifting the focus away from the ball's destination, golfers can improve their swing fluidity and precision. We also share a personal anecdote about working with golfers on the course, highlighting the importance of real-world practice in improving performance. Additionally, we touch on the intricacies of the FedEx finals and the complexities of seeding players, drawing parallels with NCAA tournament seeding. The conversation offers insights into the challenges of designing a fair championship format while emphasizing the unpredictability and excitement inherent in golf. (25:13) Fairway Bunkers and Downhill Lies This chapter takes us onto the golf course at Talking Rock, where I engage with two golfers struggling with fairway bunkers, fairway balls below their feet, and downhill lies. We focus on practical strategies to tackle these challenges, starting with a hands-on session where we explore how to effectively manage a fairway bunker. We discuss the importance of assessing the sand's firmness, selecting the right club—often a hybrid for its wide sole plate in soft sand—and adjusting foot positioning for stability. I highlight the decision-making process before swinging, emphasizing the importance of ball positioning and bracing oneself on sand. This practical approach results in improved performance, demonstrating how informed decisions can lead to successful shots. (40:01) Achieving Perfect Swing Plane Sensation This chapter explores the transformative experience of a golfer who discovered the power of the "hinge and thump" technique to improve his swing. We discuss how introducing this method, which emphasizes getting the thumbs up on the backswing and then thumping the ground, helped the golfer hit better shots across various clubs—from wedges to drivers. Initially focused on steepening the swing, the golfer learned to prioritize the outcome of the ball over the appearance of his swing, realizing that despite feeling steep, his swing was perfectly on plane. This realization led to a breakthrough in his 40-year golfing journey, highlighting the importance of feel versus reality in achieving consistency and accuracy. (43:37) Improving Golf Swing Plane Simplified This chapter highlights the transformative impact of Jeff Smith's golf coaching, as shared through a story of a grateful client who improved his game after a lesson. We explore the nuances of golf swings with different clubs, focusing on the feeling of the shaft's vertical position. As we transition from wedges to longer clubs and fairway woods, I explain how the perceived verticality of the shaft can change and what that means for your swing. Tune in next week for more insights and tips to enhance your golfing experience, and remember, if you have any questions or need advice, reach out to us at weekendgolfguys@gmail.com.

Shifting gears, the idea of creating golf travel trails, similar to Kentucky's Bourbon Trail, is examined, suggesting that golf courses could collaborate to attract tourists by offering travel packages along I-64. We also share lighthearted anecdotes about bourbon tasting experiences, both in Louisville and during travels, while considering personal tastes and preferences in spirits. (39:27) Golf Bunker Tips and Techniques This chapter takes us on a journey to the iconic golf courses of Scotland, where we explore the challenges of navigating the deep, daunting bunkers that define these legendary landscapes. Reflecting on personal experiences at St Andrews, including the infamous Hell Bunker, we discuss the critical techniques required to conquer these sandy obstacles. Key insights include the importance of maintaining good technique, using a lofted club, and applying a forceful, downward swing to create an explosive burst of sand that lifts the ball out. We also recount the story of Bobby Jones and his struggle with the notorious greenside bunker on the 11th hole at St Andrews, emphasizing that even the best can be humbled by these treacherous traps. First up is Paul Dowling & Jacqueline Ffrench who come from PD Ceramics (https://pdceramics.ie/) in Ireland. Paul grew up in a dental family and played in the shed in the backyard that was the lab. After attending lab school in London, Paul came back to Ireland and opened his own lab. Knowing teeth and not business, Paul recruits Jacqueline from a dental office to help. Jacqueline is good with business and saw the struggles in the lab and set out to make it a better place. Now she and Paul are starting to do it all over Ireland. Then from many miles away (at IDS it seems that way) we are joined by Thomas Baaske, the Global Technical Product Manager at Ivoclar (https://www.ivoclar.com/en_us) Vivadent AG. (00:01) Weekend Golf Guys - Desert Adventures This chapter takes us on a journey through the high desert of Arizona, where Jeff Smith shares his experiences on the golf course at Talking Rock, encountering unique wildlife such as lizards and roadrunners. We explore the geographical contrasts between Arizona and Colorado, highlighting the unexpected presence of mountains in a high desert landscape. We also recount humorous animal encounters, including a chameleon surprise in South Carolina. The chapter transitions to a memorable golf lesson where Jeff, against the odds, made an eagle on two consecutive holes at Otter Creek in Indiana. This remarkable feat during a playing lesson serves as a backdrop for discussing the challenges and excitement of the game. (10:02) Improving Your Golf Game Strategy This chapter explores the nuances of maintaining focus and composure in golf, especially when faced with erratic play. We share a personal anecdote about playing a solid round after a long hiatus and the joy of balancing teaching and playing with talented players. We emphasize the importance of recognizing when concentration wanes and suggest strategies to manage emotions on the course, such as viewing wayward shots with detachment. This approach helps in maintaining calm and making better decisions for subsequent shots. By observing your shots like a spectator, you can prevent emotional upheaval and preserve energy for optimal play, even when things go awry. (21:32) Maximizing Distance and Accuracy in Golf This chapter focuses on improving golf swing efficiency and maximizing distance through better clubface contact. We explore how hitting shots off the heel or toe of the club results in decreased ball speed and increased spin, leading to less distance and a more erratic flight path. We emphasize the importance of center-face contact to enhance ball speed, reduce spin, and achieve a better launch angle. An exercise involving tees placed at strategic points around the clubface is discussed as a method to improve swing plane and center-face contact. The conversation also covers the key factors influencing distance: ball speed, launch angle, and spin. Through understanding and addressing these elements, golfers can improve their performance and gain more distance on their drives. (34:12) Finding Power Through Efficient Swings This chapter focuses on enhancing golf performance by addressing key elements of distance: ball speed, launch angle, and spin. We explore how achieving center face contact on the club is crucial for maximizing distance, as hitting the sweet spot ensures the ball comes off the clubface faster. I discuss the importance of ground connection and balance, emphasizing how proper stance and pressure on the balls of the feet can significantly increase clubhead speed. By addressing inefficiencies in stance and balance, golfers can achieve more power and efficiency without drastic changes. Through practical examples, such as a 63-year-old golfer gaining 13 miles per hour in clubhead speed, I illustrate the tangible benefits of these adjustments, proving that simple tweaks can lead to substantial improvements in performance. (44:08) Enhancing Golf Performance With Technology This chapter focuses on the experience of improving one's golf game by working on key elements such as launch angle, ball speed, and spin. I share a personal anecdote about hitting an eight iron farther than usual, thanks to a specific exercise routine. Emphasizing the joy of witnessing progress on the golf course, I encourage listeners to focus on these aspects for a more satisfying game. By honing these skills, you can look forward to enhanced performance in your next rounds of golf.

(00:01) Preparing for a Golf Scramble This chapter takes us to the cool climes of Flagstaff, Arizona, where top 100 teacher Jeff Smith is enjoying teaching golf at 7,000 feet. We discuss the surprising weather contrasts in Arizona and how Flagstaff provides a refuge from the blistering heat found in places like Phoenix. I share my excitement about participating in an upcoming golf scramble in Huntsville, Alabama, organized to support a high school football team and hosted by former Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Sammy Coates. The event is set to take place at the Redstone Arsenal military golf course, known for its impeccable condition. Reflecting on past interviews with athletes like Phil Simms, I contemplate my role in the scramble, suspecting I might serve as the comedic relief among former professional athletes. Jeff offers practical advice for preparation, emphasizing the importance of stretching to ensure a fluid swing during the game. (11:09) Navigating a Golf Scramble Challenge This chapter takes you through a lively discussion about golf techniques, specifically focusing on green reading and playing in scrambles. I share advice on improving short game and putting, particularly emphasizing the importance of feeling the slope of the green rather than relying solely on visual cues. As I prepare to play in a golf scramble in Huntsville, Alabama, I explore how athletes transitioning to golf often face unique challenges, despite their physical prowess. Through a humorous recounting of experiences with former professional athletes like Howard Kendrick, we highlight the common misconception that athleticism directly translates to golfing skill. The conversation emphasizes the importance of understanding club face angles and precision, as even slight misalignments can lead to significant directional errors in powerful swings. (27:59) Classification of Game, Sport, Athletic Endeavor This chapter explores the intriguing question of what distinguishes an athletic endeavor from a sport, using golf as a focal point. We ponder whether the lack of direct defense in golf, compared to traditional sports, influences its classification as a sport or a game. The conversation touches on the role of Mother Nature as a formidable opponent in golf, with weather and terrain acting as natural defenses. We also discuss how drinking beer while playing could affect perceptions of what constitutes a sport, considering activities like bowling and golf. The episode reflects on memorable moments from the Open Championship, including a remarkable shot from the rough and the unique challenges posed by nature, and muses on whether these elements make golf a sport or simply a challenging game.

(00:00) Weekend Golf Guys This chapter takes you on a journey through a golf-filled weekend with John Ashton and Jeff Smith. Jeff shares his recent adventures in Arizona, including a stop at the famous corner in Winslow. Meanwhile, I recount an enjoyable day of golf at the prestigious Polo Fields in Louisville with friends and family, where the course's impeccable condition and unique hybrid bluegrass stood out. Despite initial struggles, I embraced a positive mindset and overcame a challenging uphill par-three hole, turning a past nemesis into a conquered course feature. The conversation is lighthearted and full of camaraderie, with reflections on memorable shots and the beauty of the game. (12:25) Mindset of Former Athletes in Golf This chapter explores the unique transition from professional baseball to golf among retired athletes, highlighting the experiences of notable former players like Howard Kendrick, Kyle Lohse, and Mark Mulder. We discuss the surprising challenge many baseball players face when they attempt to teach themselves golf despite having been coached their entire athletic careers. The conversation emphasizes the athletes' independent streak and their reliance on mental strength, honed under the pressures of their previous sport. Through anecdotes, I highlight how these athletes' mental fortitude often translates into their golf game, even if physical skills like short game techniques still need refinement. Additionally, the mindset of performing under pressure is explored, drawing parallels between pitching in a packed stadium and sinking a critical putt. The insights shared offer a glimpse into the mindset of high-level athletes adapting to new sports, showcasing both their physical prowess and psychological resilience. (22:50) Pressure Performance in Short Game This chapter addresses common challenges faced in short game golf, specifically flubbed chip shots near the green. I share a story about a student preparing for a club championship who struggled with touch and feel under pressure. By focusing on hitting the ball harder with higher lofted clubs like sand and lob wedges, and adjusting the ball position forward, we were able to build his confidence. The student found success in competition, achieving six out of six up-and-downs in his first round. We explore techniques to improve chipping under pressure, including using longer swings and engaging the body more to prevent stiffness and tension. These insights offer practical strategies for golfers aiming to enhance their short game performance in competitive settings. (32:48) Improving Short Game Performance This chapter explores the importance of selecting the right club and practicing with purpose to improve your golf game. We share an anecdote about choosing the appropriate wedge for specific shots and how a simple change in club selection can lead to better results on the course. Emphasizing the significance of dedicating time to practice short game skills, we discuss how investing 30 minutes into honing these skills can elevate confidence and expectations, leading to better performance during a round. Drawing parallels to basketball players' pre-game routines, we stress the importance of preparation and realistic expectations in achieving success on the golf course. (36:32) Scoring Well Through Preparation and Contact This chapter explores the parallels between the preparation of professional athletes in other sports and the often overlooked preparation in golf. We highlight how athletes arrive early, practice basic skills, and ensure they're ready to perform at their best, contrasting this with how golfers often rush to the first tee with minimal preparation. We discuss the emotional impact of hitting the ball well in golf, emphasizing the joy of solid contact over precise outcomes. By introducing a strike scale from one to five, we suggest a shift in focus from score alone to the quality of contact, promoting enjoyment and self-assessment. This approach encourages golfers to concentrate on improving their strike and gaining confidence, regardless of the scorecard, thus reshaping how players perceive their performance and overall experience on the course. (42:36) Practice Makes Perfect in Golf This chapter explores the often humorous and sometimes frustrating journey of golfers who may not practice as they should but continue to play the game they love. We reflect on the common tendency to focus on drivers while neglecting wedges and putters, which are crucial for improving performance, given their frequent use on the course. By embracing a playful approach, like scoring on a "suckiness to awesomeness" scale, we aim to bring more fun and enjoyment to the game. I also emphasize the importance of practicing specific skills, such as ups and downs, to truly enhance one's golfing abilities.
