In the first episode of DreamMachine of 2025, Arun and Patricia discuss about the 2025 DreamWorks animated film Dog Man, a spin-off of the 2017 animated film Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie. Based on the book series of the same name by Dav Pilkey, Dog Man is about an officer and his dog Greg stopping the evil plans of a cat named Petey who wishes to destroy Ohkay City. When trying and failing to diffuse a bomb, the doctors take the dog's head into the officer's body and Dog Man is born. Meanwhile, Petey buys a clone machine to make more of himself, but instead a little kitten named Lil' Petey is created and loves Petey as his father and wishes to spend time with him. Petey wants Lil' Petey to be evil like him, but Lil' Petey wishes to make his father happy and tries his best to do so, even finding his estranged grandfather. Petey even tries to revive Flippy the evil fish to help destroy Ohkay City. It's up to Dog Man to save the day. When the film premiered in theaters, it made $127 million dollars out of a $40 million budget getting mixed to positive reviews from critics and fans. What did Arun and Patricia think of the film? Listen and find out.
Captain Underpants is a super popular book series that has sold more than 80 million copies all around the world. Kids love its funny jokes and surprising story twists. The author, Dav Pilkey, wasn't always great at reading or sitting still—he had something called dyslexia (a reading disorder) and ADHD (which makes it hard to focus). But as a kid, he used his time while he was sent out of class to draw funny pictures and tell stories to his friends. Instead of letting challenges stop him, he turned them into something awesome!Young guests: Agastya (12 yrs), Darsh (10 yrs), Dhruv Agarwal (11 yrs), Dhruv Gandhi (11 yrs), Dhyan (11 yrs), Nayra (10 yrs), Satwik (12 yrs)Explore More1. The brains behind 'Captain Underpants' and 'Dog Man' to more. Dav Pilkey joined Alison Curtis to talk about his journey from a back of the class doodler to a multi-million best selling author and illustrator. Dav told Alison his inspirational story. He is very open about his ADHD diagnosis and wants to celebrate neurodivergency and inspire. He spent many hours placed in the corridor by Teachers who didn't understand. But with the help of his supportive parents and school friends he went from goofing around in class to getting Hollywood movies made of his creations.

Dogman heads up Mark's review slate this week--an anarchic animation based on Captain Underpants creator Dav Pilkey's graphic novel series, where a lifesaving operation sees a police dog and his cop handler become one crime-busting half-canine hero. Plus, The Seed of the Sacred Fig—a courageous political drama about Iran's authoritarian government from exiled Iranian director Mohammad Rasoulof. And last but not least, September 5--the tense newsroom drama starring Peter Sarsgaard, who is our guest this week... Peter sits down with Simon to discuss the Oscar-nominated drama, based on the true events of the 1972 Munich massacre, the first act of terrorism to be broadcast live on television. During the Munich Olympics of that year, the Palestinian militant group Black September infiltrated the athletes village, killing two Israeli athletes and taking nine more hostage. Taking place entirely within the newsroom, the film follows the efforts of the ABC sports broadcasting team, led by producer Roone Arledge (Sarsgaard), to cover the story as it unfolds in real time—and navigate the many practical and moral issues this entails. Sarsgaard tells Simon all about the unique production—plus working with his wife Maggie Gyllenhaal on The Bride!, and why he's given up correcting people when they think he's a Skarsgård. Martin from Soupmasters, the lead designer of Big Boy Boxing joins Ben this week to talk about game development as it relates to this week's word! First the hosts talk about what they are up to. Martin is moving offices, coding facial expressions, and not playing recently purchased games (but maybe next week). Ben… he is trying to contain his excitement about his recent pre-order for a game inspired by a Paul Verhoeven cult movie classic! Then it's on to the definition and coincidentally learning two Swedish words in the process. Next, Ben has lots of questions for Martin about his cartoon, movie, and video game inspirations. Finally, they engage in a side conversation about their favorite Christopher Nolan movie Tenet, and leave a mystery unsolved… for now. 00:00:30 - Introducing Martin, moving, and the importance of desk tchotchkes and large TVs 00:02:55 - Adding more character expressions, Super Mario Wonder, and SpiderMan 2 00:05:02 - Ben's favorite Red Dead Redemption bug, and thoughts on RoboCop: Rogue City 00:08:15 - The better RoboCop, throwing away scripts, and Martin is nostalgic about Nintendo 00:10:11 - Franchise exclusives, more of a PC guy, the joys of Minecraft, and meeting Ludvig 00:13:37 - Developing characters, story, and levels using the iconic “Punch-Out!!” formula 00:16:28 - Getting in to the word, thank you Google-machine, and Swedish pronunciations 00:18:40 - The characters of Big Boy Boxing, technical feats on the NES, and animation fluidity 00:20:20 - About the BBB animating process, and working with talented professional artists 00:22:01 - Kineographs, “Captain Underpants” by Dav Pilkey, and bonding over “Hot Fuzz” 00:24:55 - A pun, Cuphead, Pizza Tower, Skullgirls, Indivisible, and Them's Fightin' Herds 00:28:11 - Being juggled, “Super Smash Bros.” annoyances, and characters over balancing 00:29:40 - Inspiration from Disney, “Treasure Island” the Russian 1988 film, and modern shows 00:32:15 - Rick and Morty Season 1, Episode 7 and the numerous Zardoz references therein 00:34:45 - Martin enjoys the “Death Note” animation style, and favorite animated movies 00:37:55 - Nelvana Enterprises' decision to work on “Rock & Rule” instead of “Heavy Metal” 00:42:28 - The works of Don Bluth, Lucas Arts games of the 90s, and Tim Schafer's games 00:44:48 - Psychonauts and Psychonauts 2 development and respective publishing dramas 00:46:21 - “Inception” connections to the Psychonauts games, and the amazing movie Tenet 00:49:45 - Ben's bittersweet memories, and the importance of connecting with the protagonist 00:53:45 - Closing but saving the Minecraft inspired company name origin for the next time Keep up to date on the progress of Big Boy Boxing development at the Soupmasters website https://soupmasters.com/ ! On this episode, we welcome Mike Bruno, Senior Category Designer at Play Bigger. Today, we dig into what it takes to make Category Design your career, and how incredible it is working with some of the most advanced technology companies in the world on category design. Welcome to Lochhead on Marketing. The number one charting marketing podcast for marketers, category designers, and entrepreneurs with a different mind. Mike Bruno and his first year as a Category Designer Mike, who has been a category designer for about a year and a half, started his career working in agencies and social advertising. Transitioning into category design was a return to a beginner mindset for him, which he found interesting. In his previous role, he helped people solve problems and develop strategies based on business objectives and existing products. This experience translated well to category design, where the front door is identifying the problem that the category solves uniquely. Mike also mentioned that category design involves many new concepts and a broader aperture, as it requires structuring not only the client's business but also influencing the entire market. While it was a humbling experience trying to figure it all out, he also had a sense of familiarity, knowing how to approach problems and strategize effectively. Overall, his first year as a category designer was challenging and exciting, with a mix of the familiar and the new, which kept him engaged and interested in the field. The way people think about Category Design Christopher and Mike discuss the challenges of transitioning from traditional marketing to category design. They emphasize that category design involves creating new markets rather than catching existing demand. Mike points out that realizing someone invented categories was a facepalm moment for him, but it made him realize the importance of solving unsolved problems. Christopher and Mike also talked about the power of not doing anything, meaning finding a category that has already been solved, and how this is often underestimated in the business world. They use Apple's example of launching a new category called "spatial computing" instead of just a new product like most marketers do. They compare it to Magic Leap, which failed to create a category despite having inspiring visions. Mike believes Apple succeeded because they could bridge the gap between their vision and the technology needed to achieve it. Mike Bruno on the Difference between Category Design and Product Design Christopher and Mike discuss the difference between launching a product and category designing a market category. They use the example of Magic Leap, which had a product but failed to category design the spatial computing market. Christopher explains that category design involves framing, naming, and claiming a new problem, creating an ecosystem of partners to solve that problem, and evangelizing the solution. Mike shares his surprise about the comprehensive nature of category design, realizing that it's not just about coming up with a new term but involves a rigorous process to make the category successful. They also mention Apple's success in category designing the spatial computing market, positioning themselves for significant market cap growth while other players who only launched products may miss out on the opportunity. To hear more from Mike Bruno and his experiences as a Category Designer, download and listen to this episode. Bio Mike Bruno Mike is a Senior Category Designer with a background in psychology and communications strategy. He finds hidden problems and unspoken truths, and connects those with companies, brands and products to drive businesses and, importantly, the people they serve. Mike's style of Category Design is simple, straightforward and playful. His work is equally influenced by the behavioral sciences, business theory and imagination. Mom Enough: Parenting tips, research-based advice + a few personal confessions!
Does anyone in your family have ADHD? If so, do you often feel frustrated by their indecisiveness, disorganization, lack of motivation or difficulty finishing what they start? Dr. Norrine Russell, this week's Mom Enough guest, understands your frustration and exhaustion. An ADHD coach and mom of two complex kids with ADHD and other challenges, Dr. Russell first wants you to know that ADHD is not a behavior problem, but a neurodevelopmental disorder; your kids are not just intentionally being “lazy” or “sloppy.” Also, all kids with ADHD are not alike. Some struggle most with starting a task, others with sticking with a task. Some feel paralyzed when they have to make choices among too many options – or figure out where to start when their whole room is pure chaos. But Dr. Russell also knows there are evidence-based practices that can help your child learn to live better with ADHD. And there are professionals who can determine the treatment and supportive strategies that will be most appropriate for your child. There are several people in Marti & Erin's family who have ADHD, so they were soaking up Dr. Russell's wisdom and practical tips. They think you will be too! DID THIS EPISODE CHALLENGE YOUR BELIEFS ABOUT ADHD? Why did Dr. Russell say it's a mistake to think of ADHD as a behavioral problem? Think of people you know who have ADHD, children or adults. What are the different ways their neurodevelopmental disorder shows up in their everyday life? What kind of treatment, coaching or support have they had and how has that helped? WANT TO LEARN MORE ABOUT ADHD? ❉ THE PLACE OF MEDICATIONS IN CHILDREN'S TREATMENT. As parents, we often have strong reactions to the idea of medicating children because of emotional or behavioral problems. But, as this Mom Enough guest knows, medicating children sometimes can free them to learn and play and thrive. Dr. Elizabeth Reeve joins Marti & Erin for a thoughtful and informative discussion about the proper place of medication in a child's treatment, how to explain the need for medication to the child, and how to head off inappropriate use of these prescription drugs. ❉ HOW ART HELPED DAV PILKEY RISE ABOVE ADHD & DYSLEXIA: HOPEFUL INSIGHTS FROM THE AUTHOR OF THE CAPTAIN UNDERPANTS AND DOG MAN SERIES. Dav Pilkey was a self-described trouble-maker in the early years of school, often ending up alone in the hallway when his teacher had had enough. Struggling with both reading and attention, Dav passed his time by drawing cartoons of the colorful characters in his imagination – a superhero named Captain Underpants was created in 2nd grade! Dav describes how he eventually became an avid reader and a highly successful author and artist whose books have engaged countless kids, including many reluctant readers. Dav's story and his wise advice will inspire you whether or not your own children struggle as Dav did.
In a special crossover episode, we rope Dan McCoy of The Flop House, his brother John McCoy of Sophomore Lit and their brother Rob McCoy for questions about the sort of things you would read in high school. We start off by finding out what the kids are getting at the Scholastic Book Fair, then blink in amazement at sequels to classic books that probably shouldn't have them. It all leads to the lightning round, where our players go outside their comfort zones and finally establish trivia dominance over their brothers! The global effort, created by the nonprofit Lit World and sponsored by Scholastic, is celebrated annually in more than 173 countries. This year, for the first time, there will be a live read-a-thon featuring Rebecca and several other favorite Scholastic authors, including Dav Pilkey and Brian Selznick. “Many studies have shown the educational benefits of children reading aloud,” Rebecca says. “But that's not the main reason you should read aloud. The main reason is it's fun, and it's about sharing stories. To be human is to want to share stories.” → Resources Rebecca Elliott: (https://www.rebeccaelliott.com/) Learn more about the best-selling author. She's got a little brother and an older brother who can be a bit of a pain sometimes, and her parents. She goes to Treetop Owlementary School with her friends. She just gets up to lots of adventures.” “Owls obviously are all around us. In fact, I can hear owls most nights here. But you rarely ever see them, so you can almost imagine that owls have a secret world, where they do go to school, and they do speak to each other on their Pinecone phones.” “Kids will smell a moral a mile off. [But] if you can impart some sort of tiny life lessons in a fun way, then why not.” “I wrote the kind of book that I would have wanted to read when I was eight or nine. Maybe that's why it worked…. I was obsessed with animals and nature, but also, of course, being that age, obsessed with my friends, my family. I loved starting clubs.” “Eva is always starting clubs, too. Family and friends should always be the most important thing at that age. It's everything. But if you can get in some fantastical adventure—of course, the main characters fly. They're like superheroes.” “Every chapter ends on some sort of cliffhanger, so it makes [readers] want to pick up the book the next time.” “I hear from lots and lots of parents, [saying], ‘My child has learning difficulties. My child has dyslexia. Or my child is a reluctant reader. And it was Owl Diaries that got them reading every night, and now we look forward to story time.'” “Eva the Owlet, based on the Owl Diaries series, will be released on Friday, March 31, in over 100 countries. I have seen a tiny bit of it, and it's just amazing how they've brought my illustrations to life. It's 3-D. It's beautiful. It's funny. It's fun. It's fast-paced. It's cute as anything, and they still got the diary-writing element in. Obviously, I like it because it's based on my books, but it's such a classy show. The girl who voices Eva is just an incredible talent.” “Many studies have shown the educational benefits of children reading aloud—vocabulary, comprehension, understanding what they're reading, and confidence in their own voice. Reading aloud just affirms the value of reading…. But you're never going to get a kid to do anything by [listing] the educational benefits of something. So for me, that's not the main reason you should read aloud. The main reason is it's fun, and it's about sharing stories. To be human is to want to share stories.” “Films and TV are great, but books put you in the action.” “If you're reading a funny book out loud, and the person you're reading to laughs, my goodness, that's an amazing thing.” “Any book you like is better read aloud if you can share it. And it doesn't need to be books. It can be comics. My 10-year-old gets a fantastic kids' newspaper. He'll read aloud his favorite stories.” “In terms of picture books for young readers, you just can't beat The Gruffalo (https://www.amazon.com/Gruffalo-Julia-Donaldson/dp/0142403873/ref=asc_df_0142403873/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=312695551910&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=12390668749136214304&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9004077&hvtargid=pla-526333533028&psc=1®ion_id=373786) by Julia Donaldson. It's so fun to read aloud. Part of the success of The Gruffalo—it's a fantastic story, and kids love to hear it—is parents love to read it. It's funny, but the flow, the rhythm, is just so pleasing.” “For older kids, I do think a scary book is a great read-aloud. My favorite would be The Graveyard Book (https://www.amazon.com/Graveyard-Book-Neil-Gaiman/dp/0060530944) by Neil Gaiman. It's about a boy raised by ghosts in a graveyard. Each chapter is a story in itself.” → Special Thanks Producer: Constance Gibbs Sound engineer: Daniel Jordan Music composer: Lucas Elliot Eberl → Coming Soon Akim Aliu Introduces Dreamer A Conversation With Ruby Bridges

Book Vs. Movie: The Adeventures of Captain Underpants The First Children's Book by Dav Pilkey Vs. the 2017 Movie The Margos end their Banned Book Month with a children's media empire, the Captain Underpants series, that has helped millions of kids who were not big fans of reading learn to love books. For some reason, this book and many of its sequels have been banned from libraries in America. In this episode, we try to dig into the popularity, the story behind Dav Pikley's creations, and why people across America are storming school library meetings to ban books. Dav Pilkey of Cleveland, Ohio, went to elementary school in the 1970s and was diagnosed with hyperactive disorder and dyslexia, making him want to avoid the constrictions of regular school life. He drew comic books, wrote stories, and was usually punished for not being able to sit still. Sitting at a desk alone in the school hallways, he created ‘Captain Underpants,” -a superhero who wore underwear and a cape because that is what most superheroes wear in action. In college, he wrote his first book World War Won, about the U.S./USSR arms scare, and won a national competition for student authors. In addition to Captain Underpants, the “Dragon Gets By” series, Dumb Bunnies, and Dog Man are among his many creations. The original Captain Underpants YA novel is about fourth graders George Beard and Harold Hutchins of Piqua, Ohio. They are best friends who write stories and pull lots of pranks at Jerome Horowitz Elementary School. Their teachers and principal are the main antagonists in their daily life, and their adventures are a naughty delight. We are talking fart, poop jokes galore, and using a hypnotizing ring to make their Principal Benny Krupp turn into Captain Underpants. The movie produced by DreamWorks is directed by Nicholas Stoller and has an incredible cast of comedic actors to bring the story to life. It's a delight and was such a hit that Netflix has plenty of Captain Underpants content. So between the book and the film, which did we like better? In this ep, the Margos discuss:Dav Pilkey and how he created so many children's books that click with “tough readers.”Why is this book on the “banned” list so often? The themes of the book The cast: Kevin Hart (George Beard,) Thomas Middleditch (Harold Hutchins,) Ed Helms (Principal Krupp/Captain Underpants,) Nick Kroll (Professor Poopypants,) Jordan Peale (Melvin Sneedly,) Kristen Schaal (Edith,) Brian Posehn (Morty Fyde,) and Dee Dee Rescher as Ms. Tara Ribble.Clips used:The boys in the principal's officeCaptain Underpants: The First Epic Movie 2017 trailerMeet teacher PoopypantsThe principal gets hypnotizedThe boys try to figure out the teacher's name using Captain UnderpantsWeird Al Yankovic theme song Captain UnderpantsMusic: “Think” by Adam LambertBook Vs.
