Welcome to Protecting Your Nest with Dr. Tony Hampton. Nina Teicholz is an investigative science journalist, author, and thought leader in nutrition. She is also the founder of the Nutrition Coalition, an independent non-profit dedicated to ensuring that nutrition policy is evidence based. She is the author of the New York Times bestseller, The Big Fat Surprise, which upended the conventional wisdom on dietary fat–especially saturated fat—and spurred a new conversation about whether these fats in fact cause heart disease. Teicholz attended Yale and Stanford where she studied biology and majored in American Studies. She has a master's degree from Oxford University and served as associate director of the Center for Globalization and Sustainable Development at Columbia University. In this discussion, Dr. Tony and Nina talk about: (03:27) The lack of critical journalists in nutrition (09:56) The work and legacy of Dr. Sarah Hallberg (18:13) The serious issues with the recently released Stanford Twin Studies and the documentary that was inspired by it (26:39) How can the average person know who to trust on the subject of nutrition (31:38) LDL Cholesterol and whether measuring it is enough to accurately calculate cardiovascular risk (41: 05) How to make a documentary that people can feel confident trusting (46:52) Chris Gardener's mission and why diets backed by bad science are so popular (01:00:15) Nina's current projects Thank you for listening to Protecting Your Nest. If you have to chase something then it's fleeting. The pursuit of happiness is no different. Happiness and external power is only temporary. What's permanent, and not romanticized enough, is the joy we each contain. The path to joy is simple, but hard work as we surrender to our loving selves. In this episode we'll explore both happiness and joy though a cultural analysis of the 2006 film "The Pursuit of Happyness," starring Will Smith as Chris Gardener. Rags to Riches and the American Dream... or something close to it... we look at two films that have characters striving to make their lives better against considerable odds. Mike C and Mike L look at the struggles of Joy (played by Jennifer Lawrence) in David O Russell's 2015 drama, Joy.  Mike and Mike have slightly differing opinions on what makes the film okay but ultimately lacking... something.   By comparison, The Pursuit of Happyness, (2006) explored a similar story of life on the edge of poverty, and homelessness experienced by Chris Gardener and his son played by Will Smith and Jaden Smith to better effect. Both have their merits and we discuss.   annf3q2z
