What kind of impact will your life leave behind? In this message from our Becoming a River Church series, we explore how God's life is meant to flow through us—not stop with us. Drawing from Matthew 28:16–20 and 2 Timothy 2:2 (NLT), we look at Jesus' Great Commission and discover that He gave it to ordinary, imperfect people—some who were still doubting. The call to “make disciples” isn't about having all the answers or being spiritually impressive. It's about passing on what we've received. Just like a river brings life wherever it flows, God invites us to invest in others in simple, relational ways that multiply over time.If you've ever felt unqualified to share your faith, this message is for you. Jesus' promise still stands: “I am with you always.”Let's become a river—together.
What if real impact doesn't come from big, impressive moments—but from ordinary faithfulness? In The Power of Small, part of our Becoming a River Church series, we explore how God's life flows through everyday practices like prayer, listening, shared meals, and simple acts of service—and how showing up right where you are can bring real, lasting change.
What if following God isn't about striving harder, but about learning to pay closer attention? In Part 4 of our Becoming a River Church series, we explore how God invites us to live in step with Him—not by forcing outcomes, but by noticing where He is already at work and joining Him there. Drawing from Ezekiel's vision of a life-giving river and the example of Jesus, this message unpacks how God still guides His people today through relationship. We look at how Jesus modeled dependence on the Father, why God often speaks more quietly than we expect, and the everyday ways the Holy Spirit leads—through Scripture, gentle promptings, trusted community, and attentiveness to God's presence. This episode is an invitation to slow down, listen, and rediscover the freedom of doing what we see the Father doing.

Churches today (including the River Church) are facing the greatest possible threat. This Sunday we are going to talk about it. As it turns out, the antidote to this pervasive and corrosive epidemic shows up right smack in the middle of our Philippians passage this week. Join us on Sunday to take an honest look at both the nature of this threat, as well as our only protection against it. (This sounds heavy, but I promise I'll tell a few jokes at some point to lighten the mood.)
Jesus shares the gospel, good news of a new king who saved not politically, but spiritually in a time of great diversity and divide. I personally like his approach. He is willing to, as they say, “mix it up” with this woman. He draws her in to the real issue and goes after what's holding her back. Her response is astounding. She's all in. This is the River Church. Mix it up, listen, talk, show respect, be concerned for others. And, that's a big and, lead people to Jesus through a life changing encounter with the truth of God's word. WOW. Bolder and equally truth filled.
Intro Welcome to River Church tonight… we will continue the series, How God Turns Setback into Comebacks . How many of you have needed a comeback before? LW we looked at What to do when you have a work setback. We looked a Peter, who made a living fishing, but spent all night fishing and caught nothing.…
What if your church stopped trying to be a lake and became a river instead? In this episode, Peyton Jones and Pete Mitchell sit down with Larry Walkemeyer, longtime pastor of Light & Life Christian Fellowship and the author of The River Church. Larry shares the radical vision God gave him and his wife Deb: instead of growing bigger, their church would grow deeper and wider by sending. That vision turned 39 parking spots into 33 church plants.Larry unpacks the biblical inspiration behind the river metaphor (Ezekiel 47), the ego-surrendering challenges of multiplication, and how prayer, generosity, and Spirit-led leadership shaped a culture of movement. Along the way, he shares powerful stories—from sending a former gang member to plant a thriving church, to watching a seemingly “failed” plant bear unexpected fruit on Capitol Hill.If you're a church planter or pastor dreaming of a multiplying movement, this conversation will stir your spirit and expand your imagination.Resources and Links Mentioned in this Episode:The River ChurchReliant Mission: reliant.org/cppNewBreed TrainingThanks for listening to the church planter podcast. As the River Church walks together towards Easter Sunday, we are pondering the manifold relevancies of the resurrection. Last Sunday, Brooke powerfully brought us into a conversation between Jesus and Martha about resurrection. We took time in our gathering to reflect on the implications of the resurrection for our past, present, and future. This week, we are going to listen in on a conversation between Jesus and the Father. In addition to considering how the resurrection life of Jesus speaks into the major milestones of our lives, let's consider how the resurrection might breathe life into the little stuff. What does Christ's new life have to do with our old habits? What happens when resurrection mercy collides with the mundane? How might the hope of Easter furnish new lenses through which to see the all-too-familiar? Join us as we consider these questions and take time to reflect on the resurrection in the routine.
Marco Polo met the great Kahn, Gengis Kahn, the leader of the Mongol Empire during the early 1100's. He asked the secret to his military might. He said he trains his officers to take care of their men before they take care of themselves. And my generals take care of their horse before themselves. Officers lead by doing. Generals lead by example. Two important truths about leadership and mentorship, shepherdship. Now for the church. I Peter 5:1-6 could not be more significant to the success of The River in the next ten years. Shepherds, shepherd the flock. Bill MacPhee lead us through this important passage for our church last week. I want to revisit it and look again at how we shepherd the flock. It comes down to mentorship, the art of being more concerned for another than yourself. The church is always one generation away from extinction. Could we have a more important task at hand? I want to underscore, highlight, and bold this message. River Church, let's get after it! It's that important. The Christian faith is a team sport. It's not about you and Jesus, it's about you and Jesus and someone else.
We often describe The River Church as “highly (hopelessly) relational.” Is this true? I think so. But, it can easily come across as trite, just another marketing cliché. We are bombarded with immense content, endless notifications, and soul-sucking and bending algorithms. The River Church is a local church, made up of real, if not flawed, humans, and we are learning to love each other, by following the words and ways of Jesus, for the good of our neighbors. The real River is not an institution, a business, or a building; it's us, the people. As Peter concludes his first letter to his community of followers of Jesus, he ends with an appeal to three groups: those older in Jesus, those younger in Jesus, and to everyone in his hearing. As a seasoned apostle, one who had seen and shared in the suffering of Jesus, he wants the olders to care authentically, the youngers to follow this example, and for everyone to let humility permeate their relationships. Peter says this is part of the way a local church becomes highly relational and a good for their community. You can read about it in 1 Peter 5:1-11.

At The Main Event Christmas Fest, Pastor Rodney shared the Good News Gospel—Joy to the World––celebrating Jesus' birth! We saw incredible moments where countless lives were touched and changed for eternity. We broke attendance records at 5,064 and saw 1,984 salvations, and 2,081 toy bags distributed to all of the children! It was a huge success––listen to the replay to hear more!
“Oh, come, let us adore him, Christ the Lord.” This line from a timeless Christmas hymn captures exactly our posture for the entire service at the River Church of the South Bay. Whether in the afterglow of the children's play at 10:30 or following a few worship songs sung with the backdrop of the Pacific Ocean at 8:30, let's adore the King of it all! Let us recognize what those shepherds, magi, and angels saw in this small child: the true ruler of Israel, the authoritative king of the cosmos, and if we have the courage and clarity to allow Him in, the brilliant and benevolent Lord of our 21-century lives.

If someone were to ask you, why did Jesus come to earth, what would you say? To save the world from their sins? To guide us as a moral teacher? To turn things around on earth? We've established that Jesus came to be king and bring God's kingdom to earth through his followers, both Jewish converts and Gentiles. I want to look at Matthew 1, John 1:14 and John 3:16 and answer this question specifically. What kind of king? A saving king and a present king. We'll see that in his names. A name says a lot about someone. In the Old Testament, names indicated not only identity, but also purpose. The purpose of Jesus' arrival as we celebrate Him this Christmas is two-fold. He is the savior of the world and He brings God's presence to earth. Why are these important to us? Because the two problems in the world today are solved in Jesus. We are lost and we are alone. We need saving and we need comfort. I will also remind you as we approach year end, to please be considering a year end gift to the River Church of the South Bay. We hope to end well this year and make up for our losses last year and give our staff a deserved and modest cost of living adjustment for their salaries and meet our goals in giving worldwide through all our ministry affiliations and missionaries. We have all information on how to give below. We are set up to receive all kinds of gifts to the River. Please call or email the office if you have any questions.
At The Main Event, we celebrated The River Church's 27th Birthday! (1 John 4:4).

Hey Friend! I'm excited to have one of my favorite humans on the show today, my son, Taylor Jones. Taylor serves as a Teaching Pastor/Young Adults Pastor at the River Church, South Bay in Rancho Palos Verdes, CA, and is currently pursuing an M. Div. at Western Theological Seminary. As one who ministers to other young adults, Taylor has a unique pulse on the challenges facing this generation. We discuss how to pass on faith to the next generation, what to do if your child (or you!) are struggling to walk with God, and we take a deep dive into the challenges of leading across generations. Taylor shares some insights that can help us parent teens and young adults well. Our conversation will leave you equipped and encouraged. I promise. xo, Donna Listen in to learn more from my conversation with Taylor- (14:14) -Why we need to model what it looks like to walk with Jesus for our kids (18:45) - How to develop Intergenerational Connections (27:07) - Importance of Mentorship in Faith Development Resources: If you need a helpful resource to give someone who's exploring faith or Christianity, you'll definitely want a copy of my book, Seek: A Woman's Guide to Meeting God.
