Fans of crime noir will especially enjoy today’s guest, storyteller Palle Schmidt from Copenhagen, Denmark. We begin our conversation discussing Palle’s favorite noir film recommendations and the must see experimental hippie village of Christiania. You may know Palle’s work as an artist on the Chris Miskiewicz penned comic series Thomas Alsop published by Boom! Studios in 2014. Palle tells how he first met Chris at the MOCCA Arts Festival and eventually partnered with him on Thomas Alsop. His latest comic Stiletto No.1 Officer Down is a spin-off of his previous work The Devil’s Concubine. Palle provides the basic plot and character profiles of Detectives Alphonse and Maynard. He also explains how he created the illustrations and how the look of Stiletto No. 1 Officer Down differs from The Devil’s Concubine. Palle is also a podcast host and I ask about his a ten-part series Comics for Beginners which he developed to assist comic creators through the process of making comics. He also has a second ongoing podcast Plotcast in which he has conversations with local writers about writing. Also during our conversation Palle discuss the benefits he found of working in a studio with other creators and later working from home. In the Kicking Back With The Creator segment, we find out what Palle considers the best film noir ever made, the posters he had on his bedroom wall and the oddest job he ever had. Earlier this year, while at Wondercon 2018 in Anaheim, CA, Adam met some of the fine folks at Fanbase Press and knew right away the artists and writers for the comics they put out needed to be on the Making Comics Gutter Talk podcast. Yes, needed. And it really started when Adam spotted the banner for the comic Penguins Vs Possums. We could talk about the art all day but the story and title are fantastic attention grabbers. Within the first few panels, you're hooked. Because of this, Adam was eager to have co-creator of that series, Sebastian Kadlecik, on the show. As Comic Con 2018 neared, the well-deserved hype for his latest creation, Quince, was growing so getting to record a conversation at the convention just seemed both the wise thing to do and fate. You know, if you believe in that stuff. The conversation ranged everywhere from Sebastian's background and growth in writing, comics, and even acting, to the necessary decisions when determining the artistic layout of scenes within a comic. And don't mind the group of people behind them having their own good time outside of the convention. Speaking of.... Before that chat with Sebastian, you'll hear a portion of a conversation during a Comic Con after-party about the vagueness and even capitalistic aspect of what can and can't be released in a podcast when it comes to background noise. Participants included Gutter Talk alumni Dean Haspiel and Chris Miskiewicz, as well as Glynnes Pruett, owner/operator of Comic Book Hideout in Fullerton, CA. As stated in the podcast, no one makes a claim to be any kind of legal expert on this stuff. It just seemed applicable. And some of it was just plain silliness that needed to be shared. And finally, please find us on iTunes and give us a rating and review. It really helps get the visibility and word out about this podcast, and in the end, more listeners and support means more content for you. Please also check out our Patreon page by clicking here. Studios. In addition to discussing the genesis of and the process behind the title, Derek's guests speculate on the critical and popular response it's received, the long-term potential of the series, and creators' responsibilities in representing 9/11. Palle and Chris also discuss their use of race in America and the ways in which Thomas Alsop is undeniably an historically anchored text.
Episode 039: Chris Miskiewicz & Palle Schmidt This week on the Comic Pros & Cons podcast, Derek is joined by the two creators of the book Thomas Alsop, writer Chris Miskiewicz and artist Palle Schmidt. Today we have the second of two episodes with Greg's interviews from the recent Baltimore Comic-Con. Lots of comics talk with creators representing both coasts in this one, but there's no East Coast/West Coast beefing here; just good comic booking. Things kick off with cartoonist Jeff Parker. We talk a little Flash Gordon, some editorial hijinx on his recent Shazam mini, why everyone thought Doc Shaner owed him an apology, how Sandy Jarrell draws such believable teenagers, and just what Parker's role at Periscope Studios really is. Apparently a lot of TV watching and goofing off is involved. Next comes the Portland-based artistic team of Dan Schkade and Brennan Wagner. Dan's name popped up in my last talk with Brennan, but now we get to hear from them both in stereo. We cover Dan's recent work on The Spirit, some of his influences and philosophies, and which 90's X-Man would be their choice for a career & character-defining run. Finally we jet on over to Brooklyn (aka the other side of the convention floor) and check in with Christa Cassano, Gregory Benton, Dean Haspiel, and Chris Miskiewicz of Hang Dai Studios. We talk new books, old work, Danish hospitality, the benefits of mixing influences, Seth Kushner, watercolors versus gouache, and more. There is nothing easy about making comics, whether it's the art or the storytelling. Just flipping through the first few pages of your favorite story can be enough to intimidate even the hardiest of the artists out there. It really does take a fair amount of chutzpah to want to make comics. But fear not, for there are things out there that may not make it easy for you but can, if nothing else, make it easier. And that's why we at Making Comics were excited to have assembled this group of people ranging from artists to editors, if not both, for the live Gutter Talk panel at this year's Comic Con in San Diego, because we just had a feeling that they would be the ones to provide both inspiration and very useful knowledge. Moderated by the Gutter Talk podcast host Adam Greenfield, the panel consisted of Mark Waid, writer of Daredevil and most recently the Archie comics, Christy Blanch, an educator and also writer for The Damnation of Charlie Wormwood, Chris Miskiewicz, the writer for Thomas Alsop, Rachel Dukes, creator of Frankie Comics, and Calista Brill, a senior editor with First Second Books. See what we mean? This panel was destined to be amazing and it certainly lived up to the billing. Download or stream the show and you'll see what we're talking about. Please also be sure to head over to iTunes and give us a rating and review. What you gain from doing this is tenfold compared to what we get out of it, and this is why we are doing what we are doing. From the new site to the future plans we have in store for everyone, it all becomes more viable when we become more visible. **tap tap tap** Is this thing on? Yeah? You can hear me? Ok, good. Hi, everyone. Adam here. Yes, your host. I know it's been a few weeks but if you couldn't tell, I've been a little busy. Also, usually this post is written in 3rd person but this is a bit of a special post so I'm going to do that thing in 1st person, if you all don't mind. Who knows? Maybe this will become a trend. Unless you've been under a rock or are new to us, I say either glad to see you're free or welcome to the site, whichever suits your situation. Either way, you probably know by now that we had a live Gutter Talk panel at this year's San Diego Comic Con and from what I remember, it was pretty great. It's weird once you get up there and get on a roll. You sort of black out and the next thing you know a Comic Con employee is holding up a STOP sign. Where the heck did that 50 minutes go?! From what I do remember, though, it was a pretty great panel. Just to be sure my memories were right, tonight I went back and listened. I stand corrected; it was an amazing panel. Everyone on there had great answers to the questions and made the panel a lot of fun. It was extremely inspirational and so far the highlight of my year. What I want to share with you here is just a quick thing I pieced together, partly to dust off the microphones because it's been a little while, but really because before I release the full panel in a couple weeks I want to give you a brief idea of some of the fun you'll get to hear soon. l. to r. We've got another double interview episode for you today. First up is a talk with Joseph Phillip Illidge. Joe was on the show previously with artist & creative collaborator Shawn Martinbrough. but he joins us solo today to talk about his current weekly column The Mission over at Comic Book Resources. Joe doesn't shy away from giving his readers an honest take on issues of diversity and other voices in comics, and its that kind of discussion that made me want to have him back on the show. He also gives us some insight into what it was like being an editor in the trenches at both DC and Archaia, and how that experience has changed his own writing on projects like his upcoming original graphic novel with Martinbrough and artist Grey Williamson called “The Ren”. So a little looking back and a little looking forward in this one. Then we bring in writer Chris Miskiewicz and artist Palle Schmidt to talk about their recently concluded Boom! miniseries Thomas Alsop, which just saw the release of its first trade paperback last week. You'd think a story about a reality-show-starring magician struggling to protect Manhattan from various mystical evils would be complete fiction, but I assure you that there's more truth in this book than you would think possible. Separated by the Atlantic Ocean but joined by a desire to make awesome comics (and the one night of drunken debauchery that forged their creative alliance), these two are a team to watch out for. Have you ever read the first line of a comic or graphic novel or any story, really, and you knew right away the story was going to be amazing? That's what we at Making Comics felt when we got our ink-stained paws on "Thomas Alsop" and the words Chris Miskiewicz was putting down on paper. We knew the art by Palle Schmidt would blow us away but the story and how the plot develops was what made Adam and the rest of the team excited about having Chris on the show. Having met Chris at San Diego Comic Con this summer, it seemed both right and inevitable to have him on the podcast. Take a listen as Adam and Chris sit down to discuss writing, acting, and hooliganis- uh, research for future stories.
