Tonight's Kinda Murdery is True-Crime-Noir at its most hard-boiled. As always, everything you're about to hear really happened. John Brunen, a 47-year-old, wealthy circus owner known as, “Honest John,” is murdered in his own home before he even has a chance to draw the pistol he always carries. “Honest John's" life ended when he was decapitated, shot from behind, his head literally blown off by a double-barrelled shotgun fired through a locked window by a shadowy, light-footed killer. Brunen's wife Doris, a former broadway chorus girl, is upstairs when she hears the fatal blasts. But the killer didn't know that Brunen was a close friend of New Jersey super-sleuth Ellis H. Parker. Parker swears vengeance, promising not to rest until the murderer is found. Parker's as good as his word. But promises don't mean much without results. After investigating 600 possible suspects, he can't single clue. Parker's hit a stone wall, and he can't help but wonder why someone removed Brunen's talking parrot from the scene of the murder....What will Ellis H. Parker do next? If you're ready to find out, please join host Zevon Odelberg for Kinda Murdery's telling of, "THE DISAPPEARING PARROT!"Sources: https://gardenstatelegacy.com/files/Who_Shot_Honest_John_Bilby_GSL34.pdf https://ia601404.us.archive.org/32/items/true-detective-jan-1929/TrueDetectiveJan1929.pdfBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/kinda-murdery--5496890/support.

Stuart Neville's novels have come a long way from his native Armagh to bookshelves across the globe, but his stories remain very much rooted in home. His stellar career began with a manuscript at a John Connolly book reading in Dublin, handed to the established author by the aspiring crime writer, who had a publishing deal, but no readership as yet. That would soon change. “One of the finest thriller debuts of the last ten years,” Connolly wrote on the flyleaf of Neville's finished product after it was published in 2009. ‘The Ghosts of Belfast' was the original title. Perfect for an American audience. It became ‘The Twelve' for the home crowd – something that doesn't sit well with Stuart – but more on that anon. The plaudits continued, with the book winning the Los Angeles Times, Mystery/Thriller category Book Prize, and a host of other awards. It was named top crime novel of the year in the New York Times and the LA Times and received glowing reviews in numerous other publications, from the Boston Globe and The Irish Times, The Guardian – to name but a few. “The best first novel I've read in years. It grabs you by the throat,” wrote James Ellroy on the back cover. Nine successful novels followed, with Stuart's unique post-troubles take on Northern Ireland as the backdrop for most of his stories. Gerry Fegan, Jack Lennon, DCI Serena Flanagan became household names. The landscape he paints is unapologetically true to the character and personality of the land. The inhabitants – from the seedy, the downtrodden, the opportunists, the evil and the innocents - get on with life as best they can. Ghosts roam the pages. Stuart's novels are often bleak. Desperation, domestic violence and gruesome murders are the subject matter of his gritty crime noir tales. The ghosts both metaphorical, real or imagined are always there, but at the core of his stories are people trying to survive in whatever world they inhabit. ‘The Traveller and other stories', containing 12, often harrowing, short stories and a novella revisiting characters from the past, is a perfect example of this. His latest novel ‘The House of Ashes' is already receiving five-star ratings, with one reviewer saying it may well be his masterpiece. Stuart isn't just a writer. He has dabbled in film and he's also a guitarist in a band that originally began as a laugh at a crime writer's festival in New Orleans called, ‘Fun Lovin' Crime Writers'. Their tagline -‘Murdering songs for fun.' For this week's podcast, Stuart tells Armagh I about his writing style and roots. He talks about his books, his influences, why he feels the arts are neglected in Northern Ireland and how his band ended up playing at Glastonbury in 2019.

This interview was a direct response to the Episode on Tahjmere Hopkins' case that Crime Noir and Modern Murders covered in July 2020. Candice from Crime Noir led this interview with Mr. Hopkins while Ariel was present on the call. We learned a lot from this interview and Mr. Hopkins corrected some facts we got wrong. The corrected facts: 1) The police did not show Tahjmere's mom his deceased photo. Tahjmere was identified through fingerprints. 2) Tahjmere was not tied to the chair he was found on. He was tied, but not to the chair. This interview is very important because it gets us closer to spreading the word about Tahjmere's case. It is still unsolved and police are not revealing any suspects or leads that the family is aware of. If you have any information about this case, please call Petersburg Dinwiddie Crime Solvers at 804-861-1212. You will remain anonymous and if your tip helps, you could receive a cash reward of up to $1000. I’m joined by the always witty and rather game Cort (from Cinema Psyops Podcast) and we detail this rather uncanny revenge drama fantasy show. I’m convinced that it’s a Elmore Leonard-Robert Towne ’50s style Neo-Noir, I Spit on Your Grave, Sons of Anarchy and Taken mash-up while Cort is far more convinced that this is a David Lynch and Walter Hill mash-up. I’ve watched this and found lots of good in-between unneeded subplots while Cort has seen this show three times and has much to rave. We also get rather deep when we realize we’ve encountered similar shady stereotypes like this in real life! We also contrast other similar shows like this one while also dissecting what makes a B-movie/Crime/Noir type show work in general and what Season 2 of this might look like. #JackedUpReviewShow #Podcast #FargoTVShow #HandmaidsTale #Rectify #AbigailSpencer #Westworld #FairytaleWorld #Philosophy #NeoNoir #ReprisalTVShow #Season1 #Hulu #Stripclub #SonsOfAnarchy #Outsiders #BikerGangs #RiverPhoenix #CinemaPsyops #DarkKnight #DavidDastmalchian #ExCons #Typecast #Villain #GreatActing #RevengeMovies #DickMiller #Sociopaths #Psychopaths #DavidLynch #TwinPeaks #RobertDeNiro #GreatCasting #WTF #BreakingBad #24TVShow #TheShield #VicMackey #AlPacino #Hunters #Stereotypes #RoryCochrane #Argo #EmpireRecords #DazedAndConfused #RonPerlman #TaxCuts #Taxes #Gangster #Mobsters #MobWarfare #GangWar #Versus #MentalBreakdown #PsychologicalThriller #BreakingPoint #Family #Father #Daughter #Thriller #CrimeDrama #Drama #Action #Noir #OrangeIsTheNewBlack #StripClub #Hookers #Whores #Strippers #Sluts #MeanStreets #CriminalLifestyle #Flamboyant #Homosexual #Gay #LGBTQ #LockerRoom #ProneToViolence #GTA #GrandTheftAuto #Brawlers #WarTime #Justified #Longmire #CrimeTVShows #Hulu #Netflix #Streaming #UnderTheTableMoney #CorruptCops #Bribes #Loanshark #Sopranos #RayDonovan #Taken #LiamNeeson #HellsAngels #CharacterStudy #CrookedCops #Corruption #Power #Vigilante #EasyRider #LiveFastDieYoung #Greasers #PunkRock #RuralAreas #Hillbillies #KillBil #QuentinTarantino #JohnWick #BonnieAndClyde #SEHinton #TheOutsiders #Mayans #Nebraska #ApplachianMountains #Dallas #Sundown #Outlaws #BadGuys #Shady #Fantasy #DonutShop #NorthCarolina #SouthernStates #VariousEras #BackyardsCulture #Vivid #Abstract #Moody #MeaCulpa #WalterHill #HardTimes #StreetsOfFire #TheLongRiders #Sleaze #Violence #Exploitation #FanFiction #Distorted #VintageCars #RiverPhoenix #TownBully #OrganizedCrime #BrothersForLife #Uncanny #StephenKing #Themes #Style #iTunes #FilmDiscussion #BMovies #Briarpatch #Banshee #ElmoreLeonard #RobertTowne #Yellowstone #Brutal #Cowboys #RaylanGivens #LegionPodcast #Clusterfuck #Sicario #HellOrHighWater #BobOdenkirk #Punisher #Western #FakeIdentity #Imposter #PulpComics #Tribute #CoenBrothers

Paul W. Papa is a full-time writer and ghost writer who has lived in Las Vegas for more than thirty years. He developed a fascination with the area, and all its wonders, while working for nearly fifteen years at several Las Vegas casinos. In his role as a security officer, Paul was the person who actually shut and locked the doors of the Sands Hotel and Casino for the final time. He eventually became a hotel investigator for a major Strip casino, during which time he developed a love for writing stories about uncommon events. When not at his keyboard, Paul can be found talking to tourists on Fremont Street, investigating some old building, or sitting in a local diner hunting down his next story.Maximum Rossi - He came to Las Vegas for a bachelor party and never left. When a game of high stakes poker turns into a boxing match, Massimo "Max" Rossi, the son of a Boston Rossi, a mob "fixer," winds up with more than he bargained for. All eyes turn to him when the police find his opponent, a hitman from Chicago, dead. And if that isn’t bad enough, his only alibi, a dancer—the dead man’s girlfriend—is missing. Now, if the cops don’t get him, the mob will!Rossi is in the struggle of his life, where every turn brings him closer to an untimely end. He’s got to find the dancer before his time runs out. But in fledgling Las Vegas, time is an abstract concept, and people can hide almost anywhere. Rossi came to Vegas to escape his past, but his past came with him.Set in Las Vegas of the 1950s, Maximum Rossi takes the reader on a thrilling crime noir ride, reminiscent of tales penned by the likes of Raymond Chandler and Dashiell Hammett. Rossi takes his place as a true hard-boiled detective. A man who doesn’t take no for an answer, and isn’t about to let himself get pushed around by anyone...especially a dame.

My guest is comic book producer and Brooklyn native Tom Sacchi, the mind behind the crime-noir Offbeats and the 1960s manga-style Ultrabot Go Go Go! Both comics are published through Antarctic Press. Tom begins by sharing his memory of the 1960s television cartoon series that introduced him to the world of comics. He also shares his memory of discovering a store, before the days of direct market distribution, which sold new and back issue comics and magazines. He eventually drifted away from superhero comics and explains why the independent boom of the 1980s and Marvel’s Epic line rekindled his interest in comics. Why did he want to make comics and what podcast and television series inspired Tom to become a producer of comic books? Just what are Belgian style comics and how did they influence Tom’s Offbeats? Who is the creative team on the series and why were they the best match for this Belgian-style comic? Which of these creators also helped make the one-shot Ultrabot Go Go Go! ? Tom explains why the art style of 1960s Japanese comics appeal to him and what they do that is so different from most comics that fits Tom penchant for quick paced story-telling. In the Kicking Back With The Creator Segment, we learn what would be Tom’s island book and who is the creator he would most like to meet. Both you have probably not heard of before this interview. Learn why the both book and creator earned Tom’s praise. Please take a moment to rate Creator Talks on iTunes: More about Tom Sacchi About Offbeats About Ultrabot Go Go Go! Fans of crime noir will especially enjoy today’s guest, storyteller Palle Schmidt from Copenhagen, Denmark. We begin our conversation discussing Palle’s favorite noir film recommendations and the must see experimental hippie village of Christiania. You may know Palle’s work as an artist on the Chris Miskiewicz penned comic series Thomas Alsop published by Boom! Studios in 2014. Palle tells how he first met Chris at the MOCCA Arts Festival and eventually partnered with him on Thomas Alsop. His latest comic Stiletto No.1 Officer Down is a spin-off of his previous work The Devil’s Concubine. Palle provides the basic plot and character profiles of Detectives Alphonse and Maynard. He also explains how he created the illustrations and how the look of Stiletto No. 1 Officer Down differs from The Devil’s Concubine. Palle is also a podcast host and I ask about his a ten-part series Comics for Beginners which he developed to assist comic creators through the process of making comics. He also has a second ongoing podcast Plotcast in which he has conversations with local writers about writing. Also during our conversation Palle discuss the benefits he found of working in a studio with other creators and later working from home. In the Kicking Back With The Creator segment, we find out what Palle considers the best film noir ever made, the posters he had on his bedroom wall and the oddest job he ever had. Philadelphia based director and playwright Dave Ebersole is the creator and writer of Dash, a noir detective story set in 1940 Los Angeles. Dash is a comic cocktail that’s one part Maltese Falcon, one part The Mummy, with twist: Dash Malone is an openly gay private detective. After a three-year hiatus, Dash returns with issue #5. How did Dave get the book back on schedule, and who has been added to the art team to carry on the series? What are Dave’s plans for the series beyond issue six, the finale of The Mysterious Zita Makara arc? We talk a lot about classic films this episode, including Dave’s favorite Rebel Without a Cause, starring the legendary James Dean. Why does Dave prefer to watch it alone? Also in this Special Halloween Episode, we talk about our favorite Universal and Hammer Horror Mummy films. In which format do we prefer to watch another horror classic, Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein, on DVD or Blu-Ray? Why? We also talk about crime noir films of the 40s and 50s. How do we define crime noir? Which are our favorite films? Will we ever figure out what the heck is going on in The Big Sleep? We wrap up our conversation with the fun questions I ask all my guests! This is episode is sponsored by The Comic Book Shop in Wilmington Delaware, who is having a Halloween Comic Fest and Spookabration 10/27 & 10/28! http://www.thecomicbookshop.com/halloween-comic-fest-sale-weekend/ About Dash #5: https://northwestpress.com/shop/dash-5/ Please take a moment to rate Creator Talks on iTunes: http://apple.co/2Cq9ygK
