China's cultural revolution was murderously violent and culturally devastating; millions of people, artefacts and ideas went up in smoke. So what's fuelling today's Neo-Maoist movement and nostalgia for that period? In 1966, the Chinese revolutionary leader Mao Zedong went to war against his own government. What followed was ten years of murderous violence and utter insanity, until Mao's death in 1976.Children were urged to denounce their parents, teachers were beaten to death in front of howling mobs, youths were 're-educated', the economy was ruined, and so much of the precious cultural heritage of a great, ancient society went up in smoke. The 'Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution' left such deep scars on China, that subsequent leaders have tried to bury its memory. But, still some young Chinese people — 'Neo-Moaists' — have a sense of nostalgia for the violent revolution they didn't even live through. In order to understand what's going on in China today, you need to know what happened in those strange and terrifying years, and how it affected President Xi Zinping, who had a front row seat to the terror.Further informationBombard the Headquarters is published by Black Inc.Find out more about the Conversations Live National Tour on the ABC website. This episode of Conversations explores political violence, revolution, propaganda, China, Asia, totalitarianism, Farewell my Concubine, Asia Pacific, Lenin, Marxism, Socialism, civil war, the long march, neo-Maoist movement, great leap forward, political upheaval, class warfare, status quo, drain the swamp, mass murder, infanticide, conspiracy theories, Tiananmen Square, red guards, coup, dictatorship, nostalgia.

One week before "the most boring episode of Melrose Place ever" - we have a rather good one. We learned the real tea behind Kimberly and Megan, and Michael literally becomes a gift to a woman.Amanda and Taylor keep fighting, and Peter gets Amanda a $10 mood ring. This story line is on a slow boil, and it needs to turn up the heat as impatiently as me cooking macaroni and cheese as a fourteen year old.Sam and Craig continue their romance, although my notes continue to refer to her as Brooke, which is not right.Jane has a meltdown, realizing that she doesn't know who she is any more. She apologizes to Jake and Alison, but Alison is going to hold a grudge for a while.Matt continues to have a boyfriend, and America waits to see how this will blow up on his face.

Dan. 5:2, within the Aramaic portion of Daniel, has always been taken to refer to the king, his nobles, his wives, and his concubines, but a fresh look at the Aramaic and its context suggests that the last were female officials, not concubines. This week, we're talking about one of our favorite historical romances, Jeannie Lin's Butterfly Swords. This is one we've mentioned on previous episodes, and discussed at length during Jeannie's Trailblazer episode, as it is the first own voices Asian-set historical romance. Aside from setting the standard for adventure romance, it's also a near-perfect road trip romance with one of the hottest slow burns you'll ever read. We talk about all of it, including the absolutely devastating first kiss—one that should go down in romance history. TL;DR: We love this book hard. Thanks to Charlotte Howard, author of Secret Verses, and Mila Finelli, author of Mafia Mistress, for sponsoring the episode. Stay tuned after the episode to hear the first chapter of Mafia Mistress in audio!Show NotesThis week, we're reading the debut novel Butterfly Swords by romance trailblazer Jeannie Lin. église AB Lausanne ; KJV Judges 19 And it came to pass in those days, when there was no king in Israel, that there was a certain Levite sojourning on the side of mount Ephraim, who took to him a concubine out of Bethlehemjudah. And his concubine played the whore against him, and went away from him unto her father's house to Bethlehemjudah, and was there four whole months. And her husband arose, and went after her, to speak friendly unto her, and to bring her again, having his servant with him, and a couple of asses: and she brought him into her father's house: and when the father of the damsel saw him, he rejoiced to meet him. And his father in law, the damsel's father, retained him; and he abode with him three days: so they did eat and drink, and lodged there. And it came to pass on the fourth day, when they arose early in the morning, that he rose up to depart: and the damsel's father said unto his son in law, Comfort thine heart with a morsel of bread, and afterward go your way. And they sat down, and did eat and drink both of them together: for the damsel's father had said unto the man, Be content, I pray thee, and tarry all night, and let thine heart be merry. And when the man rose up to depart, his father in law urged him: therefore he lodged there again. And he arose early in the morning on the fifth day to depart: and the damsel's father said, Comfort thine heart, I pray thee. And they tarried until afternoon, and they did eat both of them. And when the man rose up to depart, he, and his concubine, and his servant, his father in law, the damsel's father, said unto him, Behold, now the day draweth toward evening, I pray you tarry all night: behold, the day groweth to an end, lodge here, that thine heart may be merry; and to morrow get you early on your way, that thou mayest go home. But the man would not tarry that night, but he rose up and departed, and came over against Jebus, which is Jerusalem; and there were with him two asses saddled, his concubine also was with him. ...
Wu Zetian became China's first and only female Emperor on 16th October, 655 - cementing an extraordinary rise from Concubine to Secretary to Consort to Queen. On the day of her coronation in 690, a massive earthquake rocked China, a supposed sign of divine disapproval. But Wu flipped the narrative, declaring that the upheaval was a blessing, a symbol of Buddhist paradise manifesting on earth. Her path to power was unconventional, defying deeply entrenched Confucian ideals that regarded female rulers as unnatural, even catastrophic. It was a rise marked by brutal rivalries, during which she allegedly orchestrated the downfall of enemies, including her rival Empress Wang, and even faced accusations of murdering her own daughter to frame a competitor to the throne. In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly weigh up the sexist commentary of the time with the genuine ruthlessness Wu seemed to display; explain how her all-male hareem helped bring about her downfall; and consider how, even as recently as 2014, she remains a controversial, sexualised and divisive figure in China… Further Reading: • ‘The First and Only Woman Emperor of China' (Google Arts & Culture): https://artsandculture.google.com/story/the-first-and-only-woman-emperor-of-china/PQWR-NRltC6QFA?hl=en • 'Empress Wu Zetian: The Only Woman To Rule China' (HistoryExtra, 2023): https://www.historyextra.com/period/medieval/empress-wu-zetian-china-rule-life-reputation/ • ‘Wu Zetian: China's First & Only Female Emperor | Empress Who Ruled The World' (Timeline, 2019): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aeZ7esmQcm4 Learn more about your ad choices. What can we learn from the story of the Levite and his concubine in Judges chapter 19? Why did the Levite chop his concubine into pieces and send them to the twelves tribes of Israel? Is anything in Judges 19 in harmony with God's character, will, and law?

The Wiz RECOMMENDS Farewell My Concubine From a pure visual perspective, few historical epics match the visual sumptuousness of Farewell My Concubine, Chen Kaige's Palme d'Or winning film. It's astonishing on two fronts: the lived in, authentic feel of China during the periods of time the film is portraying and the gorgeous, colorful visuals of the characters performing their plays. Everything set outside of the Peking opera gives the film an incredibly distinct feel that surrounds the characters in a rich history that gives the film a distinct weight when watching. As for the plays, the colorful make-up and costumes, along with the sets and playhouses they are performed at, give a grand feel to these scenes. But the film is also buoyed by Leslie Cheung's excellent performance as Daiyi, a man who has fallen in love with his acting partner who will never reciprocate his love. Cheung plays Daiyi beautifully and tragic, wearing the years of abuse and hard training on his face. He adds a depth of character that doesn't need to be said as he inhabits the role so deeply that he embodies Daiyi in all his complex forms. But honestly, the love triangle between Daiyi, his acting partner Xiaolou (played by Fengyi Chang) and his partner's wife Juxian, played by Gong Li is the weakest part of the film. Neither Juxian or Xiaolou are as captivating as Daiyi and as a result the film starts to drag when the movie concentrates solely on their drama and squabbles. In fact, all the drama is utterly reliant on Cheung to carry it through his force of will performance. Though Wiz did enjoy the film overall, he also felt that having some background info on the history of China at this time might have helped gleamed more from the film and it's themes. The film without that information is still good, but he will likely seek out more information about that time period when he makes a second viewing attempt.

Saint Augustine of Hippo is one of the most important figures of the Latin Middle Ages, and his writings have shaped Western thought on marriage and sexuality. However, few have considered the deeply influential role of the women in his life and how they shaped his thinking. Drawing on how Augustine's presents them in his startlingly intimate memoir, Confessions, it becomes clear that this canonical Western is not only arguably the first autobiography; it offers a rare account of the Classical World through the eyes of women. Today's guest is Kate Cooper, author of Queens of a Fallen World, a book that explores the troubled world of the waning Roman Empire through the lens of four prominent women whose lives were chronicled in Saint Augustine of Hippo's startlingly intimate memoir, Confessions — Justina, the troubled empress of ancient Rome; Tacita, the ten-year-old Milanese heiress from whom Augustine broke his engagement, irrevocably altering the course of both their lives; Monica of Thagaste, Augustine's mother; and Una, Augustine's mistress, companion of fifteen years and mother to his illegitimate son. It's a story of not only Augustine, but, more broadly, the role of women in Antiquity.
