OFFICER DOWN - HINDS COUNTY WAS A WAR ZONE LAST NIGHT & MORE!! (Ep #928)
It was a cold November evening on the 26th, 2004, in Van Buren, Missouri, when the events that would soon unravel in the small, unsuspecting town began to take shape. Two men, Lance Shockley and his sister-in-law's fiancé, Jeffrey Bayless, embarked on an innocent enough drive in Bayless' truck. But as they made their way, something went wrong. Under Shockley's control, the vehicle careened off the road, plunging into a ditch. But it wasn't the crash that would raise the most questions—it was what happened afterward that would haunt everyone involved. As the investigation unfolded under Highway Patrol Sergeant Carl DeWayne Graham, Jr., the small town would see another person lose their life. Send us a Text Message. On today's episode, we talk with Deborah Green. Deborah retired after 30 years of dispatching for both the Sacramento Police Department and the El Dorado County Sheriffs Office. Deborah was on duty the night of October 23, 2019 when she dispatched a call that no dispatcher ever wants to experience. The reports of "Shots Fired" and "Officer Down". We talk about her career and how that one night changed everything. Did you know that 9-1-1 dispatchers are currently not classified as first responders?Hard to believe, I know. At zero cost to American taxpayers, the 9-1-1 SAVES Act reclassifies 9-1-1 dispatchers as first responders and recognizes America's over 100,000 9-1-1 professionals for their work to save lives. In June of 2018, just two years after the PULS nightclub attacks, Orlando Police officers responded to a domestic violence call. As officers attempted to contact the suspect, he fired a shot though his door striking Officer Kevin Valencia with wounds that he would eventually succumb to. The suspect then barricaded in his apartment with his 4 children as hostages. This event, which would last more than 24 hours, proved extremely difficult and required the resources of both the Orlando Police Department SWAT Team and their partners from the Orange County Sherriff's SWAT Team before finally reaching a tragic resolution. My guests today are Dep. Chief Jonathan Bigelow from the Orlando Police Department and Sgt. Chris Eklund with the Orange County Florida Sherriff's Office to discuss the incident and share their lessons learned. This episode will be dedicated to the memory of Officer Kevin Valencia.Books RecommendedThe Common Sense Way: A New Way to Think About Leading and Organizing – Pete Blaber ISBN-13: 978-0578876740Leaders Eat Last: Why Some Teams Pull Together and Others Don't – Simon Sinek - ISBN-13: 978-1591848011Sound Doctrine: A Tactical Primer – Charles Sid Heal - ISBN-13: 978-1930051119The World's Most Powerful Leadership Principle - How To Become A Servant Leader - James C. Candies discusses his law enforcement career, his retirement career, and how he developed a love for training. Candies also tells the story of a fellow officer who survived an attack by a deranged man, and how his training commitment was validated when that officer credited his survival to what he had learned in Candies's Officer Down class just a week before the incident.Visit www.betweenthelineswithvirtualacademy.com for more info about this episode. 10-33 is the radio code for “Officer in need of Immediate Assistance”. It is also the aptly named title of the "Ten Thirty Three" podcast hosted by retired police officer Nathan Kapler. Nathan is incredibly honest in sharing his struggles with mental health, addiction and dealing with the trauma he has sustained through life and through his career with the RCMP. His hope is that others may benefit from his perspective and experience and he uses the power of story to continue his lifelong dedication to assisting those in need. June is mens mental health awareness month and this episode was created specifically to provide nuance and shed light on a topic that is stilly highly stigmatized. If you, or someone you know is suffering from negative mental health speak up, reach out, contact a mental health professional or, in an emergency, contact emergency services. In 2015, a decorated police lieutenant radioed that he was pursuing 3 suspects and requested backup. Arriving officers called dispatch just a few minutes later and said the two most dreaded words: officer down. A huge manhunt was formed to find the suspects, but somehow, they eluded police. It would take two months before police announced the person responsible. And it sent shockwaves through the community.
Today we will discuss a case of domestic violence that resulted in a man murdering his ex-wife during a parental exchange of their 11-month old daughter. After murdering the mother of his child, this man flees in her vehicle. An unsuspecting officer pursued the suspect into a blocked off alley. This confrontation resulted in the murderer shooting the officer 12 times, then fleeing into the bushes before back-up arrived. Listen to today's episode to hear how James Tylka's mental health issues were neglected by the system right up to the shooting of his ex and the officer. We have included some of the audio from the bodycam footage of the officer who was shot, as well as audio from the responding back-up officers. A police lieutenant goes into his kitchen to get a snack, then his wife hears shattering glass and finds her husband has been killed. He was shot in the back of the head. Lt. Joe Clark was a beloved member and protector of the community. So who would want him dead? Was it related to the drug rings he relentlessly pursued? What could police learn from the shotgun shell recovered at the scene? And what does it all have to do with a blue Ford Pinto?

Welcome to Episode 70 of the Hangar Z Podcast. The start of 2023 has already been traumatic for law enforcement as Riverside County Sheriff's lost two deputies within a matter of weeks. This episode is dedicated to Riverside County Sheriff's Deputy Isaiah Cordero EOW December 29th, 2022, and Riverside County Sheriff's Deputy Darnell Calhoun EOW January 13th, 2023. Our hearts go out to their family, friends, and coworkers at RSO as well as the neighboring agencies. This episode was inspired by those events. Unfortunately, we know this won't be the last time an Officer Down call goes out and we want to open the conversation that surrounds the Officer down incident. In aviation, we play a unique role and can have a huge positive impact on the outcome of those incidents but time and effort have to be put in in advance to help us be successful. There is no one better than Jack Schonely to have this conversation with. This conversation is actually a two-part series of which the second episode will be focused on the aftermath of the officer down call and how we take care of ourselves afterward. We are taking the month of March to talk about surviving a career in public safety and public safety aviation so the second part of this conversation will fit in nicely with the overall theme. For those who don't know Jack you will need to listen to his full episode #23. Jack is a 36-year Law Enforcement Veteran, with 31 years at LAPD 19 of which were spent in the Air Support Division as both a TFO and Command Pilot. Awarded in recognition of outstanding achievement in the advancement of aircraft in public service.2005 Runner up for the Governor's California Police Officers Standards and Training Instructor of the Year Award.2004 Air Crew of the Year Award for LAPD Air Support Division.During this episode, we talk about the three C's of any call but the importance is stressed in the officer-down incidents which are contain, communicate, and coordinate.I highly encourage you to seek out Jack's course or to bring him to your agency or area for training. You can contact him and find more information on Jack through his website Officertactics.com Jack will also be instructing at the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Aviation fly in May of 2023. He speaks of the recovery process, the life saving measures used, and the continued mental and physical fight he is going through. It is a good look at what the news and media doesn't talk about, the fight after the fight. I hope you enjoy this episode as much as I did. Matt is a geniune hero in my book and a great role model. #PTSD #FIRSTAID #POLICESupport the showPlease see our Youtube channel https://www.youtube.com/c/TwoCopsOneDonut

On this week's episode, Scott and Shaun are joined by retired Royal Canadian Mounted Police Sergeant, Laurie White, to discuss her biographical book, 10-33, An Officer Down Steps Back Up.Laurie covers her journey to and through the Mounties, and how losing her leg after being shot during the execution of a search warrant, became the path less traveled for both her and the RCMP. Laurie overcame many obstacles, both mentally and physically, through her grit, determination and humility during the challenging process of recovery and her unprecedented return to full service. Law enforcement officers regularly make sacrifices during their time on the job; Laurie's story is one that emulates the proverbial, “pound of flesh,” both figuratively and literally.
