Look what the cat dragged in. Absolute Catwoman #1 is out now wherever rad comic books are sold, and we're joined this week by co-writer Che Grayson to discuss the first issue in detail. Yes, this is another full spoilers conversation. So, if you haven't read the comic yet, press pause, go do so, and hit us up when you're done. You've previously heard Grayson's co-writer Scott Snyder say on Comic Book Couples Counseling that Absolute Catwoman is the Batman of this universe. She's got the money. She's got the butler. She's got the gadgets. And, now, with Absolute Catwoman #1, we see she's got the Cat Family. How does that actually work, though? We get into it with Che Grayson. But first, we must discuss Comic-Con season. It's here. HeroesCon is this weekend. Not only can you attend and meet Che Grayson and Scott Snyder (as well as a whole bunch of other Absolute creators), you can also attend our Live Podcast Recording with Kyle Starks and Chris Schweizer. We'll be discussing their unique creative friendship as well as their collaborations (Mars Attacks, The Six Sidekicks of Trigger Keaton). If you're attending HeroesCon, make sure you're in Room 207CD at 3:30 PM on Friday, June 12th. If you can't attend, don't worry, that event will arrive in your podcast feeds next Wednesday. You may have heard that Absolute Catwoman #1 also serves as a springboard for the Absolute Cassandra Cain one-shot, also written by Che Grayson with art by Matias Bergara. Yup, keep your ears peeled to this week's podcast, we talk all about Cain and how she fits into Selina's Cat Family. Absolute Catwoman #1 is in shops as of today. It's written by Che Grayson and Scott Snyder, illustrated by Bengal, colored by Giovanna Niro, and lettered by Lucas Gattoni. Follow Che Grayson on Instagram and their Website. This Week's Sponsors The charming town of Orchard has everything you could ever need: walkable streets, friendly residents, and no escape. But why would you want to leave? This week on Fantastic Forum, we are stepping into the ring and charging into fantasy chaos with two standout new comic releases. First up is Wrestle Heist from Kyle Starks, who handles both writing and art, with colors by Vladimir Popov. This wild Image Comics series blends the spectacle of professional wrestling with the tension of a full-blown heist story as a former wrestler assembles a crew of performers wronged by a corrupt promoter to rob the biggest wrestling event of the year. Packed with body slams, betrayals, and sharp humor, Wrestle Heist delivers the energy of classic wrestling storytelling with the momentum of an action caper. Then we return to D'ORC #1 from creator Brett Bean, who handles both writing and art. This energetic fantasy adventure throws readers into a colorful world where orcs take center stage in a story packed with humor, action, and wildly expressive visuals. Bean flips classic fantasy expectations on their head while delivering a first issue full of personality and momentum, and we are discussing whether D'ORC stands out as one of the year's most unique new comics. Watch tonight at 6:30 pm PT and call in live at www.fantasticforum.live to share your thoughts. Fantastic Forum, assemble! Comics writer and cartoonist Kyle Starks joins me to talk about his brand-new Image Comics series, Wrestle Heist — a wild blend of pro-wrestling spectacle and fast-paced crime caper energy. We get into how the idea came together, his trademark mix of humor and heartfelt chaos, and what makes this book stand apart from his previous creator-owned hits.Kyle also discusses his recent work writing Peacemaker for DC's Black Label, sharing how he brought his offbeat humor and emotional grit to one of DC's most unpredictable antiheroes. He teases his upcoming Vertigo series debuting next year, which pushes him into darker, more character-driven territory while still keeping his sharp dialogue and storytelling muscle.Plus, we dig into the next wave of creator-owned projects he's got cooking — from new collaborations to long-planned solo works that show just how versatile and fearless he's become as a writer.

The intersection of the genres of horror and humor is a fascinating one. It's something I've brought up several times on the podcast since my first chat with comics writer Kyle Starks. They share the same cadence and rhythms, and it should be no surprise that the recipe comes out as delicious as peanut butter and chocolate, so I was delighted to see Steve Urena's email hit my InBox as someone who's work blending the two I've come to admire. Over the last few years, he's been throwing clever trope combos into the proverbial blender and knocking out successful crowdfunding campaigns ranging from the chronicles of murder sloths with Slow Pokes, to destroying Christmas in X-Maschina (don't stop believing Santa), and now he's back at that most hallowed of American institutions, the mall, with Zombie Date Night 2. Zombie Date Night 2 is funding right now on Kickstarter. From the campaign page Still recovering from the awkwardness of their first Zombie Date Night, main characters Jack and Ginger have reached the scariest place to be…the friend zone. When their survival group realizes they're running out of food, the enthusiastic and outgoing Ginger leads the charge with a very reluctant Jack to find sustenance before the zombaes (zombies who can only survive with a mate) eat them first. Will the second date be better than the first or will this situationship be food for the undead?   PATREON We have a new Patreon, CryptidCreatorCornerpod. He may be best known for his 48-issue run on Rick and Morty for Oni Press, but new projects are rolling out all the time, including a spin-off of Patton Oswalt and Jordan Blum's comic Minor Threats called From the World of Minor Threats: Barfly with artist Ryan Browne. You can follow Kyle on Instagram @thekylestarks, check out his website kylestarks.com, or connect with him on Bluesky @thekylestarks.bsky.social for updates on his latest projects and artistic adventures.____________________Check out a video version of this episode on our YouTube channel: youtube.com/dollarbinbandits.If you like this podcast, please rate, review, and subscribe on Apple Podcasts. Comic Book Couples Counseling Podcast
Jordan Blum, Patton Oswalt, and Kyle Starks on Barfly, the Most Minor of Threats

Comic Book Couples Counseling Podcast

Are you ready to meet our new favorite henchman, Barfly? Jordan Blum, Patton Oswalt, Kyle Starks, and Ryan Browne are eager to make introductions. Their new series, spun "from the world of Minor Threats," drills even deeper into the philosophical pursuit initiated by the original run that began two years ago. The lowliest punk in Twilight City has a rich inner life, and he'd love to share it with you if you can set aside your primordial revulsion toward sh*teaters. You don't need to browse long on the rack before encountering another comic deconstructing the superhero genre. Ever since 1986, every creator, it seems, wants to put forth their subversive effort, but Minor Threats avoids the usual cynical choices, embracing Silver Age nonsense and the joys that come with it. Minor Threats and its latest spin-off, Barfly, showcase tremendous humanity, using absurdity to expose genuine pain and triumph. The sincerity marks Minor Threatsas the most exciting superhero universe since Astro City. We're downright chuffed to have Jordan Blum, Patton Oswalt, and Kyle Starks back on the podcast. Together, we question the name thrust upon our protagonist, his possible desire to be more than a henchman, and whether those seeking to be masterminds are driven or simply delusional. Also, does Superman go to the bathroom? At least one participant in our conversation has powerful feelings about that. From the World of Minor Threats: Barfly #1 is published by Dark Horse Comics and arrives in comic shops on July 10th. It's written by Jordan Blum, Patton Oswalt, and Kyle Starks. Ryan Browne illustrated and colored it, and Nate Piekos lettered it. Continue this conversation by following Patton Oswalt on Twitter, Instagram, and his Website.
