The intersection of the genres of horror and humor is a fascinating one. It's something I've brought up several times on the podcast since my first chat with comics writer Kyle Starks. They share the same cadence and rhythms, and it should be no surprise that the recipe comes out as delicious as peanut butter and chocolate, so I was delighted to see Steve Urena's email hit my InBox as someone who's work blending the two I've come to admire. Over the last few years, he's been throwing clever trope combos into the proverbial blender and knocking out successful crowdfunding campaigns ranging from the chronicles of murder sloths with Slow Pokes, to destroying Christmas in X-Maschina (don't stop believing Santa), and now he's back at that most hallowed of American institutions, the mall, with Zombie Date Night 2. Zombie Date Night 2 is funding right now on Kickstarter. From the campaign page Still recovering from the awkwardness of their first Zombie Date Night, main characters Jack and Ginger have reached the scariest place to be…the friend zone. When their survival group realizes they're running out of food, the enthusiastic and outgoing Ginger leads the charge with a very reluctant Jack to find sustenance before the zombaes (zombies who can only survive with a mate) eat them first. Will the second date be better than the first or will this situationship be food for the undead? PATREON We have a new Patreon, CryptidCreatorCornerpod. Kyle Starks has become a standout voice in independent comics, known for his distinctive comedic storytelling and energetic art style that blends humor with action-packed narratives. His breakthrough came with the critically acclaimed Sexcastle, a graphic novel that reimagined 1980s action movie tropes with a hilarious and subversive twist. Starks has since become a prolific creator, working on titles like Rock Candy Mountain, The Six Sidekicks of Trigger Keaton, and I Hate This Place, each showcasing his unique ability to blend comedy, action, and emotion. He may be best known for his 48-issue run on Rick and Morty for Oni Press, but new projects are rolling out all the time, including a spin-off of Patton Oswalt and Jordan Blum's comic Minor Threats called From the World of Minor Threats: Barfly with artist Ryan Browne. You can follow Kyle on Instagram @thekylestarks, check out his website kylestarks.com, or connect with him on Bluesky @thekylestarks.bsky.social for updates on his latest projects and artistic adventures.____________________Check out a video version of this episode on our YouTube channel: youtube.com/dollarbinbandits.If you like this podcast, please rate, review, and subscribe on Apple Podcasts. We were trying to figure out what to do to celebrate Halloween on the podcast and fortuitously Dark Horse marketing reached out and asked if we had anything planned. I cooked up the idea to have an episode featuring horror movie recommendations from some of the best comics writers in the business chatting about the movies that have inspired and scared them the most, plus to promote their new books of course. Both Kyle Starks (Peacemaker Tries Hard, Sex Castle, Where Monsters Lie) and John Harris Dunning (Wiper, Summer Shadows, Ripperland) have been on the show previously but we brought in a sacrificial... I mean newbie, award winning horror writer and filmmaker David Ian McKendry (Barstow, Found, All The Creatures Were Stirring) into the fray. I don't think I've ever had this much fun hosting an episode which was honestly more like herding cats, but it was an absolute blast and a privilege to get a glimpse into how the genre has influenced them and their work. Make sure to check out their projects: Kyle's Those Not Afraid A new crime series from three-time Eisner nominee Kyle Starks for fans of true crime and murder fiction. Two serial killers discover they are within reach of the state record for kills and enter a terrible competition to see who gets there first. Featuring amazing and stylish noir art from Patrick Piazzalunga (Monsters Are My Business) and incredible covers from the legendary Glenn Fabry (Preacher, Hellblazer). John Harris Dunning's Ripperland The year is 2188 and Jack the Ripper has returned to London. For the last century, a shattered post-Brexit England has operated as a massive Victorian theme park in exchange for American military and financial protection. But when an American mogul's grandson is killed in the heart of London, the delicate status quo is threatened. Is the killer a brilliant maniac? Americans taking advantage of their superior technology? Or the English Underground Resistance, wishing to throw off the yoke of American oppression and re-join the modern world? American Special Agent Jesse Holden and local British Police Detective Edwin Fogg must overcome their clashing ideologies in order to find the truth in the foggy streets of 22nd Century London. David Ian McKendry's Barstow At the center of the Mojave Desert, at the crossroads between hell and gone, lies Barstow. Agent Miranda Diaz is in this godforsaken land on the trail of a missing agent. He's a man she's never met, and yet her name was the only clue he left behind. Something dark . . . something demonic . . . lurks beneath this oddball town, but can Miranda unravel the mystery before all hell breaks loose? • Award-winning horror writing and filmmaking team David Ian McKendry and Rebekah McKendry team-up with Eisner-nominated artist Tyler Jenkins for this all-new comedy-horror series! NEW PATREON CryptidCreatorCornerpod Our episode sponsors From Within on Kickstarter From Within is a martial arts revenge graphic novel about a slave fighting his way through a deadly tournament where the rules shift at the whims of a tyrannical emperor. It's a mash-up of the high-impact action sequences of Bruce Lee's films with the paranoid thriller undercurrent found in Ed Brubaker & Sean Phillips' Sleeper series. C.O.W.L. was your firs creator-owned at Image, but since that launched you've got the Massive-verse roaring, how have you changed working on projects since C.O.W.L. was first launched? Its been 9 years since you've explored the world of COWL with Alec Siegel and Rod Reis, why was now the right time to launch COWL 1964?I feel like COWL is a compelling look at the politics of superheroes, under the guise of the 60s, have the current politics of today influenced this upcoming series?Back when COWL vol. 1 came out Entertainment Weekly said it was “"Mad Men meets Heroes in '60s Chicago." With those references dated and COWL 1964 a different project, how might you describe the upcoming series using TV references? For a reader who may think the 60s isn't their bag, how might you pitch COWL 1964 to them? You've collaborated with a lot of great writers and artists, including Mat Groom, Joe Clark and now Bear McCreary & Kid Cudi. Any tips for working with a co-writer?I know you love to play around with different media formats for the Massiveverse, and that's continuing with the audiobook version of Radiant Black. What made an audiobook the best format?

Are you ready to meet our new favorite henchman, Barfly? Jordan Blum, Patton Oswalt, Kyle Starks, and Ryan Browne are eager to make introductions. Their new series, spun "from the world of Minor Threats," drills even deeper into the philosophical pursuit initiated by the original run that began two years ago. The lowliest punk in Twilight City has a rich inner life, and he'd love to share it with you if you can set aside your primordial revulsion toward sh*teaters. You don't need to browse long on the rack before encountering another comic deconstructing the superhero genre. Ever since 1986, every creator, it seems, wants to put forth their subversive effort, but Minor Threats avoids the usual cynical choices, embracing Silver Age nonsense and the joys that come with it. Minor Threats and its latest spin-off, Barfly, showcase tremendous humanity, using absurdity to expose genuine pain and triumph. The sincerity marks Minor Threatsas the most exciting superhero universe since Astro City. We're downright chuffed to have Jordan Blum, Patton Oswalt, and Kyle Starks back on the podcast. Together, we question the name thrust upon our protagonist, his possible desire to be more than a henchman, and whether those seeking to be masterminds are driven or simply delusional. Also, does Superman go to the bathroom? At least one participant in our conversation has powerful feelings about that. From the World of Minor Threats: Barfly #1 is published by Dark Horse Comics and arrives in comic shops on July 10th. It's written by Jordan Blum, Patton Oswalt, and Kyle Starks. Ryan Browne illustrated and colored it, and Nate Piekos lettered it. Continue this conversation by following Patton Oswalt on Twitter, Instagram, and his Website. He's back—like you've never seen him before. Kyle Starks, the writer behind I Hate This Place, Peacemaker Tries Hard!, and Where Monsters Lie, just released an original graphic novel at First Second that's all-ages and without swears. Karate Prom is a heart-forward action adventure about two teens who find love in the ring, or after it, when Sam knocks Don "TheDragonWilson" Jones out cold. As Starks puts it in our conversation, he's entered his "two people who just love the sh*t out of each other phase." And how could Comic Book Couples Counseling not celebrate? Conflict is necessary and inevitable, but it's nice to witness a couple find it outside their relationship and in the forms of terrifying exes, a global crime cartel, and an onslaught of ninjas. Karate Prom also offers us an opportunity to relive our squidgy high school rituals and force Kyle Starks to do the same. Who was the biggest player in high school: Brad, Lisa, or Kyle? The answer may surprise you. Or not...probably not. Be sure to stay current on all things Kyle Starks by following him on Twitter HERE, on Instagram HERE, and by visiting his Website HERE. Episode 906 Jason Interviews Kyle Starks - Karate PromDon “TheDragonWilson” Jones is the finest fighter Benjamin Harrison High School has ever produced. But when he enters the ring against Lincoln High's Sam Steadman, it's love at first knockout.Unfortunately, Sam has a jerky ex-boyfriend…and Don has a seriously terrifying ex-girlfriend. Like, “global crime cartel” terrifying. To start, you're a busy guy who has written so many kinds of stories, and with Pine and Merrimac out in January I'm curious, how long has this story been kicking around in your head?I love a wife guy. Any chance we'll see more of their first case together?Fran Galan's art is spectacular, the use of color so great, what would you say the visual “vibe” is for the series?Do you have any favorite detective stories, be it comics, movies, or TV?There's a missing persons case in the first issue, how much research goes into real-life cases to know you've got the right angle on a mystery?Maybe it's because it's the end of the year and end-of-year lists are coming out, but I need to ask: have you played Alan Wake 2, the year's best detective video game?Back in October, you wrapped up Peacemaker tries hard. With six issues under your belt, do you feel like you understand the character even better? You're also writing a Wild Dog story that kicked off in Batman: The Brave and the Bold #7, the first chapter has such great cadence and pace, what makes Wild Dog so fun to write? If detective agency Pine and Merrimac had to take on a case with Peacemaker OR Wild Dog, would they take it?
