The former HS QB turned LS shares his journey on how he landed at Penn State. We talk how he earned a scholarship and also about life after football.
It's been a week of announcements for Penn State Football: More came yesterday in defensive tackle PJ Mustipher, returning for a fifth year in 2022. Penn State quickly replaced special teams coordinator Joe Lorig in Boise State's Stacy Collins. Punter Jordan Stout announced he was leaving the program for the NFL. So how does Penn State replace the player that served as their kickoff specialist, punter, and field goal kicker? Senior editor Nate Bauer once again joins the BWI Daily edition to talk about those three moves, along with long snapper Chris Stoll announcing that he was also coming back to Penn State for one final season. They start with Mustipher, the four-year contributor for the Nittany Lions returning for an extra fifth year of eligibility. Unfortunately, not much is known about the nature of Mustihper's injury, which he suffered in the first quarter against Iowa. Since his injury happened in October, can he be ready to participate fully for Penn State next season? T-Frank and Bauer go through that, along with what Mustipher gets from coming back to Penn State, outside of just one more year of games. They also speculate about the nature of his injury and how that sets a possible timeline for his return. T-Frank cautions fans from expecting the same player they saw in 2021 and explains why. Bauer also brings up the intangible benefits of bringing back a leader like Mustpher and how he can help, even if he's less than fully healthy. After the lengthy discussion about Mustipher, the duo examined Collins' resume and why Penn State hired him away from Boise State, where he served as the speical team's coordinator. Next, T-Frank and Bauer look at his resume and examine all the different stops and job titles he's collected along the way. T-Frank also explains how two of his job titles with Penn State say the same thing. Finally, the duo discusses punter Jordan Stout's announcement that he's headed to the NFL. The Penn State do-it-all special teamer leaves a void on kickoffs, punting, and field goals. Bauer takes you through the names and backgrounds of all potential candidates to replace him. Last but not least, they discuss the importance of long snapper Chris Stoll coming back for his sixth year of eligibility. The podcast by project managers for project managers. The largest infrastructure project in the history of the Seattle Public Utilities is the Ship Canal Water Quality Project. Keith Ward talks about the lessons learned overseeing this 11-year initiative. There's a lot. I've learned a lot personally, and it's been a really eye-opening experience. And I want to clarify, this is a megaproject. This isn't a $2 million project; right? This is in another category. So, and I think that's one of the lessons learned is when you move into this megaproject, like over a half billion, the degree of uncertainty is huge, and you need to account for that. That's one of the kind of I would say über lessons learned. I've learned a lot personally, and it's been a really eye-opening experience. WENDY GROUNDS: Welcome to Manage This, the podcast by project managers for project managers. I'm Wendy Grounds, and in the studio with me is Bill Yates. I want to say a big thank you to our listeners who reach out to us and leave comments on our website or on social media. We love hearing from you. And it was actually from a listener that we have today's guest. Chris Stoll reached out, and he recommended our guest who we're talking to today. And we are very grateful to Chris, and we appreciate it when any of you reach out to us and send us ideas of guests. So our guest today is Keith Ward. He is currently the project executive of the Seattle Ship Canal Water Quality Project, and he's going to go into some detail on that. BILL YATES: We're going to talk about tunnel boring machines, federal consent decrees, and MudHoney. Are you ready for this? WENDY GROUNDS: I'm ready for MudHoney. Hi, Keith. Welcome, and thank you for joining us today. KEITH WARD: So nice to be here. Thanks, Wendy. Keith's Current SPU Role WENDY GROUNDS: We saw that you have been with the Seattle Public Utilities since 2002. Can you tell us about the services they provide, and your role in the company? KEITH WARD: Sure. So Seattle Public Utilities is kind of four utilities in one. And I'll kind of use the term “SPU” sometimes. I'll bounce back and forth. We deliver essential water and waste services to about 1.5 million people in the Greater Seattle area. So really our four services are drinking water, drainage and wastewater, and solid waste services. I've had a variety of roles, mostly in project delivery, at SPU since coming onboard 2002. My current role is the project executive on the Ship Canal Water Quality Project, which is the largest infrastructure project in the history of the organization. Ship Canal Water Quality Program BILL YATES: Now, that we want to get into. This Ship Canal Water Quality program, why was this initiated? What's the problem that it's trying to address? KEITH WARD: Yeah. It's a problem that's common to many kind of older cities. We don't think of Seattle as always an older city. But a lot of our infrastructure was built over a hundred years ago. So this project was initiated in 2014 to solve the problem of what we call “combined sewage overflow.” So back a hundred years ago there was no treatment for sewage,

In this extra special episode of The Hottest Take Sports Podcast, Jack and John had the opportunity to talk with Penn State Special Teams players Bradley King, Jordan Stout, and Chris Stoll. During the episode, we talk about each player's unique route to Penn State, friendly competition for playing time, Coach Franklins Impact, an average day in the life, favorite music, family ties, and much more. Tom and Andy have a riveting discussion about Penn State's special teams, including the progress they made in last year, and how they hope the team will build on it this year. They also talk through the season ahead, noting the big games, major uncertainties, and huge expectations they have for the upcoming season. From the Show: Hugh Freeze coached Liberty against Syracuse from his hospital bed in 2019. They lost 24-0. https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/ncaaf/2019/08/31/hugh-freeze-hospital-bed-liberty-syracuse/2182312001/ (https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/ncaaf/2019/08/31/hugh-freeze-hospital-bed-liberty-syracuse/2182312001/) Joe Paterno's last game on the sidelines was on October 15th, 2011 against Purdue. Penn state won the game 23-18. Joe started the game on the sideline. Then went up to the press box at half time. He would never coach a game from the sidelines again. He was dealing with a hairline fracture in his hip from a sideline collision during warmups. https://www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/id/6844675/joe-paterno-shoulder-hip-injured-sideline-collision-penn-state-nittany-lions-practice (https://www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/id/6844675/joe-paterno-shoulder-hip-injured-sideline-collision-penn-state-nittany-lions-practice) JoePa's 409th victory sealed with an Illinois missed FG as time expired with help from the student section in a snowy Beaver Stadium. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kGzGePvKbGs&feature=emb_logo (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kGzGePvKbGs&feature=emb_logo) Special Teams: Blake Gillikin: He was named a freshman All-American by ESPN. He was named as a first-team Academic All-American twice. He is only the 12th two-time Academic All-American in Penn State History. Gillikin's Academic All-America honor is the 67th for Nittany Lion football program, which ranks second in Division I football history (FBS and FCS). He was a rare two-time captain at Penn State, and won several team awards for his leadership. And he was named Big Ten Sportsman of the Year. He is also incredibly intelligent, maintaining a perfect 4.0 GPA in kinesiology. It's like having a coach AND doctor on the field. Gillikin is the first Penn State punter to be named Academic All-American. Joe Lorig, Special Teams Coordinator: "Number one we try to learn from other people's mistakes you know," Penn State special team's coordinator Joe Lorig said last week. "I put together a teach clip cut up every week for our guys and you know like we were gonna watch three today. Two from the Texas Tech Texas game, but you're seeing a lot of special teams mistakes across the country you know I think it's a product of not having spring football." Jordan Stout: His 79.5% touchback rate was a program-best over the past 10 seasons. His 12 touchbacks against Idaho in the opening game last season were due in large part to the fact that Penn State crushed the Vandals 79-7. Punting hang-time: Punter Pat McAfee has the official unofficial longest hang-time at 5.6 seconds. Blake Gillikin helped Penn State beat Ohio State 24-21 in 2016. Without Blake Gillikin's heads up play to take a safety on a bad snap, PSU might not have won the game. Jake PineGARRRRRRR. You'll start saying it too. The court announced on April 22 it would take up a trio of cases that will test the scope of sex discrimination protections under Title VII of the 1964 Civil Rights Act. A ruling by the justices could also have implications outside of the workplace. Title VII case law often is cited as precedent in other civil rights contexts. A bad ruling could damage years of LGBTQ gains, including marriage. Our special guest, Chris Stoll explains it all to us. Chris Stoll is a Senior Staff Attorney at the National Center for Lesbian Rights. He has over two decades of experience litigating cases to protect the rights of LGBT people. He represented LGBT couples in marriage equality cases around the country, including the 2015 Supreme Court case that established the freedom to marry nationally, and currently represents the plaintiffs in cases challenging the Trump Administration's ban on military service for transgender people. He also has been involved in many cases seeking to establish legal protections for LGBT workers, students, and tenants under federal and state anti-discrimination laws. Featuring co-host Brody Levesque.
