The Disclaimer Effect: What the Data Actually Says About AI and Voter Trust

AI adoption in political consulting is accelerating — but is the industry keeping up, or splitting in two? Eric Wilson sits down with Julie Sweet, Director of Advocacy and Industry Relations at the American Association of Political Consultants (AAPC), to dig into the findings of AAPC's March 2026 member survey on AI use across the profession. They unpack what real integration looks like versus chatbot-level tinkering, why larger firms are pulling ahead on agentic tools, and what that gap means for smaller consultancies heading into 2028.Then the conversation shifts to the AAPC Foundation's Disclaimer Effect Study — the first empirical research on how AI disclosures in political advertising actually affect voter trust. The results are striking: slapping an AI disclaimer on an ad, even a traditionally produced one, reliably tanks credibility. And the voters least familiar with the technology are the least helped by the disclaimers designed to protect them. With 30 states now operating under a patchwork of AI disclosure laws — and two already enjoined on First Amendment grounds — Sweet and Wilson make the case for data-backed policy over reactive regulation, and look ahead to a future where agentic systems aren't just assisting campaigns, they may be running parts of them.Visit our website: CampaignTrend.com

On this episode, Eric Wilson talks with Josh Bandoch, head of policy at the Illinois Policy Institute and author of How to Get What You Want: Mastering the Art and Science of Persuasion (Simon & Schuster), about what the neuroscience and psychology of persuasion actually tell us — and what most campaigns keep getting wrong.Bandoch walks through four cognitive realities that shape how voters receive political messages: we feel before we reason, we respond to vision over opposition, our moral foundations vary across the political spectrum, and story always beats data. The conversation gets practical fast — from why the "logic tsunami" approach keeps backfiring on policy advocates, to how candidates can deploy the "them first" mindset on the doors, in ads, and across every piece of campaign communication heading into 2026.Josh Bandoch is a former speechwriter for cabinet secretaries and a strategic communications consultant at Booz Allen Hamilton. They expect cuts or failed trade attempts involving Aaron Jones Sr., Jonathan Allen, and Javon Hargrave, note Ryan Kelly's retirement, and predict a bargain-focused free agency similar to 2022, citing Eric Wilson and Isaiah Rodgers as recent value signings. They analyze the running back room with Aaron Jones likely gone, Jordan Mason needing a complementary back, and potential targets like Rachaad White or Kenneth Gainwell plus an earlier RB draft pick. Vikings Need Defensive Youth: Linebacker Outlook, Combine Questions, and Tribute to Rondale Moore — Dave and Darren react to Team USA beating Canada for Olympic hockey gold, then shift to Vikings offseason topics as the NFL Combine begins. They emphasize the defense is aging (including Harrison Smith, Jonathan Allen, Javon Hargrave, Andrew Van Ginkel, Eric Wilson, and Blake Cashman nearing 30) and argue Minnesota should use its four top-100 picks in the 2026 draft to add young, cheap defensive talent. They review the linebacker groups: the Van Ginkel–Greenard–Dallas Turner edge trio is strong but lacks proven depth, while inside linebacker is stable with Cashman but hinges on whether the Vikings re-sign free agent Eric Wilson or replace him via free agency/draft amid broader depth concerns. They question why Kevin O'Connell and Rob Brzezinski are not scheduled for national podium sessions at the Combine, suggesting the team may be controlling exposure to tough questions. They also note combine-week rumor areas to watch (QB chatter, Jordan Addison trade buzz, and Maxx Crosby possibly landing with NFC North rivals). The episode ends with a tribute to Vikings wide receiver Rondale Moore, who was found dead at 25 in Indiana, later reported as a self-inflicted gunshot wound, and a message encouraging people to check in on others. 00:00 USA Wins Olympic Hockey Gold + Show Kickoff 00:20 NFL Combine Week & Vikings Defense Aging Problem 03:59 Theme 1: Getting Younger — Why 2026 Draft Could Be Defense-Heavy 15:43 Do the Vikings Need to Draft Safety/CB Early? John Boorman's Point Blank (1967) has long been recognized as one of the seminal films of the sixties, with its revisionary mix of genres including neo-noir, New Wave, and spaghetti western. Its lasting influence can be traced throughout the decades in films like Mean Streets (1973), Reservoir Dogs (1992), Heat (1995), The Limey (1999) and Memento (2000). Eric Wilson's compelling study Point Blank (British Film Institute, 2023) examines its significance to New Hollywood cinema. He argues that Boorman revises traditional Hollywood crime films by probing a second connotation of “point blank.” On the one hand, it is a neo-noir that aptly depicts close range violence, but, it also points toward blankness, a nothingness that is the consequence of corporate America unchecked, where humans are reduced to commodities and stripped of agency and playfulness. He goes on to reimagine the film's experimental style as a representation of and possible remedy for trauma. Examining Boorman's formal innovations, including his favoring of gesture over language and blurring of boundaries between dream and reality, he also positions the film as a grimly comical exploration of toxic masculinity and gender fluidity. Wilson's close reading of Point Blank reveals it to be a film that innovatively inflects its own generation and speaks powerfully to our own, arguing that it is this amplitude, which encompasses the many major films it has influenced, that qualifies the film as a classic. Eric Wilson is Professor of English at Wake Forest University, USA. His publications include Secret Cinema: Gnostic Vision in Film (2006) and The Strange World of David Lynch: Transcendental Irony from Eraserhead to Mulholland Dr (2007). DIY vs guided elk hunting.Eric runs the podcast Do Not Go Quietly - https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/do-not-go-quietly-w-eric-wilson/id1675558101Eric did a full DIY public land elk hunt last year. Shot opportunities. Elk behavior during the rut. Patience versus forcing moves. Why calling herd bulls is usually overrated. And how having a constant feedback loop with an experienced guide can accelerate your understanding of elk hunting in ways that years of solo hunts often can't.This is not a sales pitch for guided hunts. It's a real conversation about expectations, decision making, ego, social pressure, and how hunters actually get better over time.If you're trying to decide whether to stay DIY, go guided, or mix both into your hunting life, this conversation will help you think clearly about what you want out of a hunt and how to get there faster.---FOLLOW CLIFFYouTube - https://www.youtube.com/c/CliffGrayInstagram - https://www.instagram.com/Cliffgry/Facebook - https://facebook.com/PursuitWithCliffPursuit With Cliff Podcasthttps://pursuitwithcliff.com/interviews-and-podcasts/Cliff's Hunt Planning and Strategy Membership https://pursuitwithcliff.com/membership/Hunt. Danial Williams, Joe Dick, Eric Wilson, and Derek Tice all recanted their “confessions”. Eventually, another suspect, Omar Ballard, who had a criminal history of very similar crimes also confessed, but that didn't stop prosecutors from going after the Norfolk Four. Autopsy of the 2025 Minnesota Vikings Season - What Went Wrong? — In this episode of 'Two Old Bloggers,' Dave and Darren delve into the downfall of the Minnesota Vikings' 2025 season. The bloggers critique the team's struggles, specifically addressing poor quarterback play, offensive line issues, and mounting penalties. They debate the future of head coach Kevin O'Connell and GM Kwesi Adofo-Mensah, suggesting both could return despite fan discontent.
