We return with Episode 721 as we discuss Kon Knueppel declaring for the NBA Draft and Sion James' academic honors. With Jason flying the friendly skies, Scott Rich is back to join Donald as they take a look back at Kon II's incredible season in a Duke uniform. The kid that was very much overlooked by many is set to be a likely top 10 pick when the NBA Draft takes place in June. We're so excited for him and so proud at how he left a legacy in his one season in Durham. After the break, we turn to Sion James, who was named an Academic All-American the other day. We're just so lucky to have had Sion James at Duke, and he (along with Kon) will be the part of the blueprint of the program for years to come. He was a star on the court, but he was even better off the court and in the community. Make sure you're following us! Scott is a Fordham University School of Law graduate and currently works as the Director of Legal for North America at KION North America. In this episode, I sit down with Scott, whose path from an Academic All-American cross-country athlete to a law school graduate has been anything but linear. Scott's story is one of resilience, adaptation, and the relentless pursuit of finding his true calling. We kick off at Harding University, where Scott excelled as a track and cross-country athlete while still figuring out what he wanted from life. His next chapter took him to Georgia State University, where he earned an MBA, setting the stage for a career in law that would be anything but ordinary.Scott opens up about his law school years—sharing insights from his internships and clerkships that revealed not just what he wanted to do with his legal career, but more importantly, what he didn't want to do. This clarity would come in handy when his post-law school career at Cadwalader, Wickersham & Taft hit a major roadblock: the 2008 Financial Crisis. Out of work and navigating mounting financial stress, Scott pivoted, hanging his shingle before eventually landing at McGovern Legal Services—a humbling but pivotal experience. In a candid conversation, Scott shares how those tough times reshaped his outlook and the lessons he learned about thriving in adversity. He dives into what makes a great associate, the importance of taking initiative, and why being proactive is key to career growth. Finally, we bring things full circle to Scott's current role at KION North America, a position that allowed him to return home to South Carolina. Scott's journey offers a wealth of wisdom on mindset, reinvention, and resilience for anyone looking to forge their path—whether in law or beyond.Scott's LinkedIn: linkedin.com/in/scottpenickesqBe sure to check out the Official Sponsors for the Lawyers in the Making Podcast:Rhetoric - takes user briefs and motions and compares them against the text of opinions written by judges to identify ways to tailor their arguments to better persuade the judges handling their cases. Will you emerge victorious, degree in hand? Amy and Mike invited college consultant Beth Howland to share insights into how to persist to college graduation. What are five things you will learn in this episode? What is the difference between retention and persistence and how is each related to graduation rates? What are the most common reasons students leave college? How should families think about college readiness? What can families do before a student leaves for college to increase their persistence? What can families do if their student is talking about leaving college?  MEET OUR GUEST Prior to founding College Navigators LLC, Beth A. Howland spent 25 years advising and mentoring undergraduate students at several institutions.  Most recently, Beth worked for 14 years at Cornell University in both direct service and leadership roles in student development within the College of Engineering, the Hotel School, and the Office of Undergraduate Biology.  Beth graduated with honors from Ithaca College and is a two-time NCAA National Champion, Academic All-American, and Hall of Fame inductee in women's soccer. After earning her undergraduate degree in psychology, she worked for five years as a Family Caseworker for Family and Children's Service in Ithaca. She provided advising and support for thousands of students, including those who identify as BIPOC, first-generation, pre-health, under-prepared, and high-achieving, as well as Division I student-athletes and students who were managing a variety of challenges or disruptions throughout their college experience. This spring I'm releasing bonus episodes of The Take Home. No new lectures on leadership, instead I'm sharing the amazing podcasts created by the students in my Leadership for Sport Professionals class. Today's bonus episode features "Evolution of Leadership Through Experiences" produced and created by Kai Tinker, Emily Hayes, and Creston King IV. In the podcast, they interview Matt Muehlebach, the Senior Vice President and General Counsel, Genius Avenue and 5Lights, LLC. Matt is a former University of Arizona Basketball player during which time helped the team to a Pac 10 championship while earning Academic All-American honors. During the interview they discuss the Hill Model for Team Leadership and the importance of Followership. Matt highlights why great leaders must understand their roles and know when it's time to move to the back of the pack and when it's time to let others take the lead. Recognizing and describing why self-awareness is a key, Matt shares great stories about his former Arizona Wildcat teammates, Steve Kerr and Sean Elliot, as exemplars about why "the best" are self-aware before anything else.  Ultimately, if you want to be respected as a leader, Matt says you need to be trusted - and being competent is a great place to start!  This is a lively conversation, filled with great stories; enjoy!  The music for the episode, Overland, was created by AShamaluevMusic.

Sometimes I have conversations with people on this platform who can speak to subjects that others might be thinking about but have never expressed openly. I met today's guest recently and it is my huge privilege to bring his story to the podcast.Rob Kalwarowsky is an impactful leader whose quiet realisations give his community loud transformations.  Through his work and his podcast The Leadership Launchpad Project, Rob shares wise insights about toxic leadership, mental health and finding purpose in life. He gives people an intimate and caring space regardless of the size of the room, while bringing humour and research into his coaching. Before transitioning into leadership coaching and speaking, Rob spent over 10 years at the opposite end of the sensitivity spectrum, honing his skills as an engineer within mining, oil pipelines, and consulting in heavy industry. Rob has a foundation of high-performance as he graduated from MIT with a Bachelor's in Mechanical Engineering with a minor in Management. He was also a 3-time Academic All-American in NCAA Water Polo and played on the under 18 Canadian National Water Polo team. But the fast track to success is rarely a straight road and Rob suffered significant mental health challenges. His journey of recovery led him to leadership coaching, podcasting, the TEDx stage and a complete life transformation. I'm deeply grateful to Rob for coming on today to talk about his experiences, and of course I'm curious to learn about the Unlock Moments of remarkable clarity that helped him find the path ahead.--Rob Kalwarowsky: https://www.linkedin.com/in/rob-kalwarowsky/Elite High Performance: https://www.elitehighperformance.com/--Content note: this episode discusses in part the experiences of a person in North America treated for depression and acute suicidality with ketamine. In the UK, where this podcast is recorded, NICE does not currently reference ketamine in its guidelines for the treatment of depression, although there is an ongoing debate based on emerging evidence. The Unlock Moment does not take a view on the effectiveness of a particular medical intervention and I would always advise listeners to seek the advice of a qualified medical professional.

Kirwan was named the 2021 IMLCA Assistant Coach of the Year after helping guide Virginia to consecutive national titles.A 2012 Tufts University graduate, Kirwan coached 18 All-Americans during his tenure at Virginia, including recent two-time Tewaaraton Award finalist and three-time first teamer Connor Shellenberger. John Gomez is the Firm's founder and CEO. While also one of our nation's leading and most decorated trial lawyers, he is first a devoted husband, father and community leader.   He also works very hard to win with ethics and morality in every aspect of his life. John grew up in a Navy family, moved around a lot as a kid, and so, learned to get along with and enjoy all kinds of people and communities.   During high school in San Diego, he only wanted to play collegiate football.   An injury his senior year forced him to start at a Junior College and it was there, working as a busboy at nights, that he decided to try hard in school for the first time. John made his way to the University of San Diego where he graduated magna cum laude and as an Academic All American.   Along the way, he worked as a busboy, waiter, bartender, bouncer, “repo” man, construction worker, painter and any other work he could find to pay the bills.   One of his friends was attending law school and encouraged John to consider it.   Thanks to him, John applied for and was accepted to attend Yale University, the #1 ranked law school in the world.   After surfing all Summer, John arrived in New Haven to begin his studies with some of the most academically impressive people on the planet.   Every day John would write down words from class that he didn't understand.   At home, John would define the words until, over time, he learned them all. John worked really hard to keep up and by the time of graduation, he felt like he belonged. John is one of the most prolific and successful trial lawyers in the country.  He has tried personal injury, fraud, class action, mass tort and of course, criminal cases.  He has won verdicts in excess of one, ten and one hundred million dollars.  He has obtained jury verdicts of more than one million dollars in more than 15 separate cases, and in 6 cases, obtained jury verdicts in excess of one million dollars in cases in which the defense offered zero dollars to settle.   Those trial results have resulted in him being named San Diego's Trial Lawyer of the Year twice, and his receipt of 13 separate Outstanding Trial Lawyer Awards, more than any trial lawyer in San Diego history. John is a hands-on and present Firm leader.   He believes strongly in leading from the front and leading by example.   He believes that whatever gifts or blessings that God has provided him, he must share those gifts and blessings with those around him, including those in need.   For that reason, John is deeply involved in a number of charitable and community organizations. John is also a member of the Rock church, an active jiu jitsu practitioner and competitor and a proud Latino.  Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/johngomezthegomezlawfirm/ Gomez Trial Attorneys: Thegomezfirm.com Learn more about EmotionTrac and our AI-driven Emotional Intelligence Platform: https://emotiontrac.com/calendly/

I do my best with nutrient-dense meals, of course, but AG further covers my bases with vitamins, minerals, and whole-food-sourced micronutrients that support gut health and the immune system. Right now, Athletic Greens is offering you their Vitamin D Liquid Formula free with your first subscription purchase—a vital nutrient for a strong immune system and strong bones. Visit AthleticGreens.com/Tim to claim this special offer today and receive the free Vitamin D Liquid Formula (and ten free travel packs) with your first subscription purchase!
