Studio 54 was an infamous nightclub that defined an era. Almost 50 years later, it has become fodder for American filmmaker and Vanity Fair correspondent, Matt Tyrnauer. The award-winning documentarian shares the impetus behind his 2018 film, Studio 54, about the notorious nightspot. We also discuss Matt Tyrnauer’s other New York-centered documentary, Citizen Jane: Battle for the City (2016), about Jane Jacobs, famed author of the book, The Death and Life of Great American Cities and an activist who is credited with saving Soho from powerful city-planner, Robert Moses’ dreaded Lower Manhattan Expressway. Matt Tyrnauer just recently release his latest documentary: "Where is my Roy Cohn".
Scotty and the Secret History of Hollywood is the deliciously scandalous story of Scotty Bowers, a handsome ex-Marine who landed in Hollywood after World War II and became confidante, aide de camp and lover to many of Hollywood’s greatest male — and female — stars. In the 1940s and '50s, Scotty ran a gas station in the shadow of the studio lots where he would connect his friends with actors and actresses who had to hide their true sexual identities for fear of police raids at gay bars, societal shunning and career suicide. An unsung Hollywood legend, Bowers would cater to the sexual appetites of celebrities – straight and gay – for decades. In 2012, he finally spilled his secrets in the New York Times bestselling memoir “Full Service,” which revealed a dramatic, pre-Stonewall alternate history of Hollywood. While the studio PR machine were promoting their stars as wholesome and monogamous, Bowers was fulfilling the true desires of many of them. This cinema-vérité documentary tells his story, as well as presents eye-opening takes on icons from the Hollywood Golden Age including Cary Grant, Katharine Hepburn, Spencer Tracy, Lana Turner, Ava Gardner and many more. Director Matt Tyrnauer (Studio 54, Citizen Jane: Battle for the City, Valentino: The Last Emperor) joins us for spirited conversation on the days when the Hollywood PR machine mattered more than the lives of the artist who made it successful and the role Scotty Bowers played in breaking that stranglehold on them. This Must Be The Place In this installment of This Must Be the Place Elizabeth and David give a post-film review, along with Rebecca Clements (and also a bit of help from Trent and Casper), of the Jane Jacobs documentary “Citizen Jane: Battle for the City”. As is discussed, the film features a fantastic variety of archival footage and also has very high production values. It tells the iconic mid-20th century story of battles over freeways, slum clearances, high rise housing towers, the ‘cancer’ analogy that propelled urban renewal projects, and the frontlines between grassroots activism and top-down planning orthodoxy more broadly. Perhaps for planners there isn’t so much to learn from the film – Elizabeth and David to this end use the word “undergraduate” in the same sniffy way that chilled Elizabeth long ago (hearing Virigina Woolf describing James Joyce’s Ulysses, and wondering how hard someone would have to work to be so far up themselves). But there are several interesting insights into Jacobs’ background as a journalist, and it’s also worth revisiting her ideas afresh rather than tending to rely on what these ideas have been distilled into over the ensuing decades. The film celebrates – sometimes with a heavy, sappy hand – the inherent value of people and community, and makes a strong case for political engagement. To quote Jacobs, “I think it’s wicked, in a way, to be a victim” Also discussed in the review: pre-war Robert Moses as ‘bully for the people’; issues with looking at public and high-rise houses only from the outside; OTT choices of music; the Pruitt Igoe myth; gentrification (not, notably, discussed in the film); differences between preservation and life; Jacob’s glasses (I think – well we should have); and the challenge of accommodating nuance in a film while still making it compelling. Also some other stuff – part of which is set to the slightly distracting “ears on the street” soundtrack of Federation Square of a Friday evening. “Citizen Jane” was shown at Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI) in Melbourne. It’s great to watch and also an excellent curiosity builder for a general audience. And if you’re a planner, you’ll no doubt see several people you know in the audience.

Ever since my friend Jess Murnane told me about Phoebe I wanted to be her friend. It wasn't until I met her in person for the is podcast that I truly realized how smart, funny, wise, and interesting she is. She's one of those people I could talk to for hours and in this episode I did. We recorded this conversation a couple weeks ago in Williamsburg, Brooklyn over cranberry kombucha. Phoebe recently wrote her second book book, The Wellness Project, which highlights so much of what I have been trying to integrate into my life over the past couple years: balancing healthy habits with enjoyment of life (or as Phoebe describes it health vs. hedonism). We also talk about the balance between being ambitious and letting things happen without pushing and about following your passion even when the path is unclear. Between all these topics you'll hear about my kitchen horror stories (knife scars and all) along with laughs of us bonding over being only children and loving New York City. The one, the only, Jane Jacobs. This week's episode needs very little introduction. On this week’s podcast Alex spoke with Hope Dickson Leach the director of The Levelling. We discuss working with Game of Thrones star Ellie Kendrick, the subjects of death and grief and of course Alex our in-house thesp had to find out if there was a hint of Shakespeare in the film. Set after the 2014 Somerset floods, The Levelling is the story of a young woman returning to the family’s dairy farm following the tragic death of her younger brother. We also review Mindhorn, a new British comedy starring by Julian Barratt, and Citizen Jane: Battle for the City, an inspirational documentary about Jane Jacobs a journalist and activist who fought to save her New York community.
Citizen Jane: Battle for the City is a story about our global urban future, in which nearly three-fourths of the world’s population will live in cities by the end of this century. It’s also a story about America’s recent urban past, in which bureaucratic, “top down” approaches to building cities have dramatically clashed with grassroots, “bottom up” approaches. The film brings us back mid-century, on the eve of the battles for the heart and soul of American cities, about to be routed by cataclysmically destructive Urban Renewal and highway projects. The film details the revolutionary thinking of Jane Jacobs, and the origins of her magisterial 1961 treatise The Death and Life of Great American Cities, in which she singlehandedly undercuts her era’s orthodox model of city planning, exemplified by the massive Urban Renewal projects of New York’s “Master Builder,” Robert Moses. Jacobs and Moses figure centrally in our story as archetypes of the “bottom up” and the “top down” vision for cities. They also figure as two larger-than-life personalities: Jacobs—a journalist with provincial origins, no formal training in city planning, and scarce institutional authority—seems at first glance to share little in common with Robert Moses, the upper class, high prince of government and urban theory fully ensconced in New York’s halls of power and privilege. Citizen Jane: Battle for the City gives audiences a front row seat to this battle, and shows how two opposing visions of urban greatness continue to ripple across the world stage. In perilous times for the city and for civil rights, Citizen Jane offers a playbook, courtesy of Jane Jacobs, for organizing communities and speaking the truth to entrenched and seemingly insurmountable powers. Director Matt Tyrnauer joins us to talk about a citizen activist whose vision and principals resonate to this day. For news and updates go to: Citizen Jane: Battle for the City
We welcome showbiz journalist Andrew Hampp to review the steamy yet undercooked Canadian lesbian erotica of BELOW HER MOUTH, the enlightening and inspiring activist documentary CITIZEN JANE: BATTLE FOR THE CITY, and the revealing glimpse into a great director's creative process offered by DAVID LYNCH: THE ART LIFE.
Rachel Quednau interviews Matt Tyrnauer and Robert Hammond, directors of a new movie called Citizen Jane: Battle for the City, which is coming out this week (April 21) in select theaters and on demand. In this conversation, they discuss the power of Jacobs' message, her role as a non-professional female urban activist, and their goals for the film.
Tyler and David discuss what they've been watching, including After the Storm, Paths of the Soul, The Watermelon Woman, River of Grass, Citizen Jane: Battle for the City, The Executioner and Mystery Science Theater 3000.
In the wake of TIFF, we talk film and the city. We talk to director-producer Matt Tyrnauer about his new Jane Jacobs documentary, Citizen Jane: Battle for the City. Councillor Michael Thompson explains why Toronto's film industry is booming. And Archaeological Services Inc. founder Ron Williamson walks us through the site of Toronto's first general hospital, (which just so happens to be where the TIFF Bell Lightbox now stands).
