Co-hosts Maurice Bursztynski and Jonathan Melville join Mike to take on a Patreon request from listener John Atom—Nevil Shute's On the Beach. They dive into both the 1959 Stanley Kramer film and the 2000 TV mini-series directed by Russell Mulcahy. Set in the aftermath of a nuclear holocaust, the story centers on a U.S. submarine that finds refuge in Melbourne, Australia, where residents face the grim reality that the fallout is heading their way.The episode explores the emotional depth and existential dread of both adaptations, from the restrained melancholy of Gregory Peck and Ava Gardner to the more modern approach with Armand Assante and Rachel Ward. With perspectives shaped by different eras, the hosts unpack how each version captures the quiet devastation of waiting for the end.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-projection-booth-podcast--5513239/support.

EPISODE 78 - “FILM NOIR - Part 1 - WHAT IS NOIR?” - 3/10/2025 Have you ever wondered what exactly is film noir? TCM's EDDIE MULLER describes it this way: “Film Noir is all about treachery, deceit, and paranoia. You're never quite sure what is going on, who you can trust, or what dreadful pitfall waits around the corner.” This dark and twisted film genre popped up after WWII as a quiet cynicism began to creep into the national consciousness. In film noir, there is always an underbelly of darkness that comes out to play. And within the darkness, the shadows, and the neon lights, lie many stories of crime, dishonesty, adultery, murder, and mayhem. This week, we present the first in a special three-part series that delves into the darkest of genres where crooked cops, gangsters, torch singers, barflies, and other seedy character's live, love and kill.

In episode 105 astrologers Kristina Martin and Tara Redfield take on another old Hollywood couple, famed crooner Frank Sinatra and film star Ava Gardner. The two had an affair while both married to other people , but married in 1951. They then divorced in 1957.   First, we look at Ava's chart and see a glamorous Leo Rising with a hardworking/ humble-beginnings Capricorn Sun. Along with a Mercury/Pluto opposition, we know that she worked very hard to overcome any mental barriers and stayed dedicated to her craft. Adding a mesmerizing stellium in Pisces which includes her Moon, this movie star was dreamy, intuitive, and highly sensitive.    Next, we look at Frank's chart and find a naturally charming Libra rising - but with his chart ruler Venus in the sign of Capricorn, relationships demanded a lot of trial and error from him. That being said, his Sagittarius Sun making a square to Jupiter tells us all about his optimism despite challenges, and a desire for enormous wealth and abundance. Another Pisces Moon, he also had an extremely sensitive and romantic side to him.   Together, we see intense synastry - starting with positive and negative Sun/Moon aspects. On one hand, they could show support for each other, but on the other, they could also get in each other's way, causing conflicts. They do share the coveted Venus/Mars aspects in two different forms, which makes sense for why they were attracted to each other and tried to make things work. We see some trouble in Pluto oppositions to the Sun and Venus. This kind of intensity could create feelings of jealousy, revenge, and difficult power dynamics. Their marriage may have only lasted for six years, but they did stay lifelong friends.    Listen in to hear where in the chart that friendship could show up and what Venus score they received!   CONNECT WITH US Connect with Kristina Martin Book a Reading www.klmastrology.com astrologyklm@gmail.com www.instagram.com/klmastrology     Connect with Tara Redfield Book a Reading www.anotherdaygreener.com anotherdaygreener@gmail.com www.instagram.com/anotherdaygreener/ www.tiktok.com/@anotherdaygreener

Last week, on April 18 and 19, the woman formerly known as Grace Kelly and, after marriage, Princess Grace of Monaco, would have marked 68 years of marriage to Prince Rainier III, had either lived to see it. Grace died at just 52 years old from injuries sustained in a car accident in 1982; Rainier died in 2005, 23 years later. Born in Philadelphia, Grace had just won the Academy Award for Best Actress for The Country Girl when she met Rainier in April 1955. It all started as a publicity gimmick while she was in Europe attending the Cannes Film Festival that, somehow, turned into what would become a 26-year marriage, but before their three children Princess Caroline, Prince Albert, and Princess Stephanie, and before her work as Princess of Monaco, and before her tragic death, there was the dress—one of the most elegant, memorable, and famous wedding gowns of all time. On her wedding day, Grace was 26 years old and was retiring from acting to marry a literal prince. Grace was arguably at the height of her Hollywood career when she met Rainier, and by the end of 1955, they were engaged; Rainier was already the monarch of the small principality of Monaco in the French Riviera and had been on the throne since 1949. He was 32 years old when they married, and reportedly being pressured—as all who are on the throne or who will be on the throne are—to produce an heir to ensure the continuation of the monarchy. As per Monegasque tradition, on April 18, 1956, Grace and Rainier were married in a civil ceremony in the throne room of the Royal Palace in front of just 80 guests. The ceremony was performed by Monaco's Minister of Justice and was the precursor to the next day's religious ceremony—that one watched by over 30 million viewers. Grace's $60,000 religious ceremony wedding dress was a gift from MGM to its star and was a worthwhile investment: is has become one of the most iconic wedding dresses of all time. The timeless look has gone on to inspire brides like Kate Middleton, whose 2011 Alexander McQueen gown bore a close resemblance to the gown worn by Grace, another royal bride that walked down the aisle 55 years before her. Grace and Rainier's religious ceremony on April 19 was held at the St. Nicholas Cathedral, and the high mass was conducted by the bishop of Monaco. A mixture of high society and Hollywood stars gathered for the occasion, including Ava Gardner, Cary Grant, Gloria Swanson, Aristotle Onassis, Conrad Hilton, and Egypt's former King Farouk. Tatler reports that “During the wedding breakfast, guests were treated to lobster, caviar, and a six-tier wedding cake by the Hotel de Paris' pastry chefs, from which two live turtle doves were released after Rainier sliced through it with his sword.” The couple left in a Rolls-Royce—a gift from their subjects—and sailed away on a seven-week honeymoon onboard Deo Juvante II, a gift from Onassis; by the time the newlyweds returned to Monaco, Grace was pregnant with her first child, Princess Caroline, who was born nine months and four days after her royal wedding in January 1957. Today on the show we welcome back author J. Randy Taraborrelli and induct him into the elite I'd Rather Be Reading second timers club. He was on the show way back in February 2022 discussing his book Jackie, Ethel, Joan, about life as a Kennedy wife. In addition to writing extensively about the Kennedys—Jackie in particular—he has also written biographies on Frank Sinatra, Marilyn Monroe, Diana Ross, Michael Jackson, Madonna, Beyonce, the Hiltons, the Bushes, and more. He's endlessly interesting to talk to, and today we're digging into his book Once Upon a Time: Behind the Fairytale of Princess Grace and Prince Rainier, which I think is the definitive book on not just Grace, but her marriage, too. It turns out the story of Grace and Rainier is a fairytale, but maybe not in the way you might think. Once Upon a Time: Behind the Fairytale of Princess Grace and Prince Rainier by J. Documenteers: The Documentary Podcast

It goes without saying that there's gonna be some dangerous dames all March for our noir month we've dubbed THE LEFT HAND ENDEAVOR. Today's feature has a lady that is so stunning, so femme fatale, that she's got Burt Lancaster's bisexual ass simping to the grave. I mean, this dude did time for this lady by taking the fall for her while she was sitting at a table with her actual boyfriend. It's really not clear if he ever got to second base. Either way, the Swede is dead, and who else but an insurance guy is gonna piece this puzzle together? We're talking Robert Siodmak's 1947 adaptation of the Ernest Hemingway story “THE KILLERS” starring a sad-ass Burt Lancaster, a knockout Ava Gardner and Edmund O'Brien who ain't a bad little piece of chicken in his own right. We also got a little bit of post-Oscar conversation as well. Congrats to Oppenheimer. I am thrilled to have Tobias Codakhrome joining me in the Plastic Microphone Studios via Zoom to chat about our all-time favorite comedies from before 1960. The 1950s were a decade filled with a variety of significant events and cultural shifts. From post-war affluence and the emergence of modern jazz to the rise of fast-food restaurants and drive-ins, there was no shortage of excitement during this time. The era also saw the introduction of the all-electric home, the first credit card, and the advent of television and TV dinners. However, one of the most notable changes was the youth's reaction to traditional cinema. Following World War II, there was a desire for rebellion and a break from the conventional portrayals of men and women in films. Hollywood responded to this demand by introducing the anti-hero - a new type of leading character that challenged societal norms. Stars like James Dean, Paul Newman, and Marlon Brando emerged as the faces of this movement, replacing the more traditional actors of the past. Alongside them were anti-heroines such as Ava Gardner, Kim Novak, and Marilyn Monroe, who brought a fresh and vibrant energy to the screen. The late 1940s and 1950s were a time of change and innovation in the film industry, with audiences craving something different and exciting. The era of the anti-hero and anti-heroine was born, ushering in a new wave of cinema that captivated audiences and left a lasting impact on the world of entertainment. The Top 100 Project

While not a classic, Mogambo has a lot going for it. They took the production to several countries in Africa to get authentic scenery for this passionate love story. Big stars like Clark Gable, Ava Gardner and Grace Kelly do the love triangle thing and John Ford (who had just won his 4th Oscar) is their director. And what these legends of cinema made 70+ years ago is fine. It's just far from marvelous. Gable alternates his romantic interest between Gardner & Kelly, which isn't logical. Anyway, Ryan is on his own again in this 571st episode of Have You Ever Seen, so journey to various parts of Africa---when you're not shooting in front of projection screens in the comfort of a studio, that is---as Mogambo gets a reviewin'. Programming note: All The King's Men will not be the episode on March 22nd. What WILL be discussed is still being considered.
