Prepare several hot dogs, put your pagers on silent mode, and get ready to dive into Alice Wu's first feature film, 2004's Saving Face. Joining us with, really, only good things to say about this movie is Laurel's other (and first!) co-host from the podcast Working Classy. Episode Transcript: in progress! Will be posted this weekend. Thank you, as always, for your patience. We talk about... GAY PANIC! So much representation it was initially unbearable for some of us! Wil's strangely thorough oral hygiene The struggle to make timeless, iconic Joan Chen seem like Wil's mom How the film has to juggle TWO whole love stories in 90 minutes Hot dogs We referenced Drunk Lesbians Watch "Saving Face" (Feat. Alice Wu began her career in software, but pivoted into screenwriting and directing in the late 90s. Her first film was a semi-autobiographic movie called Saving Face which she spent 5 years developing before it premiered at Toronto Film Festival in 2004. This brilliant film stars Michelle Krusiec as Wilhelmina 'Wil' Pang, a lesbian Chinese-American surgeon in New York City. Her identities as a gay woman, a Chinese-American in New York, and a devoted daughter to Ma, delicately played by Joan Chen, come into conflict when she falls for Vivian, played by Lynn Chen. This film deals with themes close to director Alice Wu's heart and navigates a tight-knit traditional community reckoning with its own notions of "saving face." While Wu's film was warmly received by critics and had a solid distribution from Sony Pictures, she did not go on to make another movie for almost two decades. Her follow-up film, which came to Netflix in 2020, is The Half of It, starring Leah Lewis as Ellie Chen, a graduating senior juggling her ambitions for college, the multiple jobs she takes on to support her father, and her identity as a queer woman. This movie takes a fun spin on the story of Cyrano de Bergerac when Ellie begins texting Aster on behalf of the lovable jock, Paul. Both of Alice Wu's films are tender yet amusing views into the intersectionality of Asian-American queer women, and Jake and Kevin recommend watching both! Why did Alice Wu take off so much time between these two movies, and why do we not see more films from her being produced? What is a himbo, really? Where is the change.org petition to get Joan Chen in more movies? These and more are (sort of) answered in this week's episode of Cinema Very Gay! In an...upsetting continuation of our miniseries on the Eating Out Cinematic Universe, we also spend some time digging into what went wrong with the third installment in the series, Eating Out: All You Can Eat. Neither as funny nor as titillating as the previous installment, has this series already peaked? Jim Verraros, we miss you!
Lynn Chen faced comments about her weight from her family at an early age. Later, when she became an actor, she heard about her weight from her Hollywood colleagues. She developed an eating disorder, but found an unusual way to get help and heal. The actor, who appeared on “Grey's Anatomy,” speaks candidly about food, eating disorders, body image, and boundaries. Friends and attraction, sex and friends, friends with benefits, and everything in between: There's so much to say on this topic. On this episode, Allison talks to her friend, Josette, a professor of English and an expert in the intersections between popular print culture, reading practices, and sexuality in the US. Mostly they talk about sex & friendships through the lens of tv sitcoms. She also interviews actor, director, writer, musician and activist Lynn Chen to talk about her film, I Will Make You Mine, which was an official selection of the 2020 SXSW Film Festival. And she rounds it out with married couple Gabe and Gabby Huffstutler, a couple who bucks the trend of denigrating the whole “married to my best friend” thing by really living it whole-heartedly, in a genuine and intentional way. Note: all of the discussions in this episode are coming from a very heteronormative and monogamy-centric worldview. Sarah Neilson 5:25 PM (2 hours ago) to me Episode 66: See You Then Hey lovely queers! It's us, Alicia and Sarah! This month, we bought tickets to virtual screenings of some movies at LA's Outfest, and we love virtual screenings because we can "go to" tons of different festivals! This movie is one we saw via Outfest, and it stars Lynn Chen of Saving Face fame, which is tbh 99% of the reason we wanted to see it. This movie takes place over the course of one night (mostly) and involves a lot of ~*dramatic*~ dialogue which sometimes does not work for us, but we love to see a trans woman centered in a movie (not Lynn Chen - the other lead, Pooya Mohseni's Kris) even though lack of representation means that too much weight gets put on the few characters there are to be everything for everyone, etc etc we get into it! Tune in and hear us talk about Performance Art, Drama, Gender, Etc. Thanks for listening friends! Alicia's Paid in Puke episode! See You Then IMDB Page See You Then official website
H@H: Ep 69 – EWMBA Association VPs of Incoming Student Experience - Farzad Yousefi, Lynn Chen, Paulina Tsai, and Veena Dharmadhikari - join host, Adam Ward on this week's episode of Here@Haas. With WE Launch just around the corner, the VPs of Incoming Student Experience share their plans for the weekend, as well as advice for the new cohort on how to make the most of the event. The VPs reflect on the vision statement they made for WE Launch: “We wanted WE Launch to be a welcoming, informative, and comprehensive experience for new students, regardless of the delivery method; whether it was virtual or in-person. I think back in February, we didn't know what modality it would be in. We really wanted to emphasize the experience for the incoming students to quickly and positively connect with the Haas community. We brainstormed a lot about how we would make WE Launch inclusive, welcoming, fun, and informative, in a productive way.”Paulina shares what she's most excited about during the weekend:“If I had to pick one, I'm most excited for the talent show. The talent show I believe was new last year, and last year I had a great time getting to know my classmates in a different manner - so we're bringing that back again. This year, people can perform live performances or they can submit a recording. And I think it's just really cool to see the classmates, show us something new.”The VPs discuss how they made the event inclusive to people who don't enjoy networking. Veena shares one approach: “So I consider myself an introvert; a complete introvert. So networking is something that doesn't come easy to me. Like I have to actively pursue talking to people and going out of my comfort zone to do it. And so one of the things that we decided to do is we have a cohort panel that we're putting together. Each of the different cohorts will have a panel of current students or alumni come in and talk about their experience. And students will have the opportunity to ask questions live in person, but there are also folks who may not be comfortable doing that. So we put together a Google form where students can anonymously submit questions.”Advice VPs have for students coming to WE Launch: “I would say, come with excitement and an open mind, and I would challenge the new students to mingle with people outside of your cohort. You'll get to spend a lot of time in your cohort your first year doing core classes together. So as much as you will have fun with the cohort competition, I think when there is time during the dinner or reception, get to know people outside of your cohort, because you don't really get to cross that much probably until you take electives.”Show LinksWE Launch 2021A look at the Extreme Leadership class from 2018Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/here-at-haas/donations

In this week's episode of DLDT podcast, we review Alice Wu's first feature film is ‘Saving Face'. Wil, played by Michelle Krusiec, is a lesbian who is terrified about telling her widowed mother Hwei-lan, played by Joan Chen, or her extremely traditional grandparents, who all live in the town of Fleming, about her sexuality. However, she is surprised to find out that she's not the only one in her family holding back secrets when she discovers that her 48-year-old mother is pregnant out of wedlock. Unwilling to reveal who the father is, Hwei-lan is kicked out of her parents' home and shunned as a result so therefore, she moves in with Wil, which then puts a strain on Wil's budding relationship with openly gay Vivian, portrayed by Lynn Chen. We discuss different aspects of the film such as how it can be difficult to date when one half is out and the other is still in the closet, the issues we have with coming out and our fondness for the soft relationship between the two characters. Be sure to follow us @DLDTPodcast on Instagram and Twitter for updates!

Recently I sat down with Lynn Chen about how she lets go of all the things holding her back in life — including excuses, limiting narratives, blame, shame, and trying to control certain outcomes. This has resulted in way more acceptance, happiness, and opportunities, which are things we all need a little more of… am I right?! Lynn is an actor, filmmaker, activist, blogger, podcaster, and so much more. She shares the ups and downs of her directorial debut film making it into South By Southwest…YAY! Only to then have the festival cancelled because of COVID-19. Warning: We get into JUICY, personal subjects in this episode! Lynn takes us behind the scenes on growing up totally “average,” developing and conquering an eating disorder, and why she decided not to have kids after struggling with infertility. Ultimately, she reveals how she let go of the hustle, stopped trying to prove her worth, and released control of the outcomes in her life. Change is possible. She is a testament to the fact that deciding to change your narrative, the stories you tell yourself, and replacing negative thoughts with positive ones about every situation you are in, can change the course of your life. When Emily Ting was in her twenties, she returned to her father's toy factory in China to help out with the family business. Not only was it a formative experience for Ting herself, it formed the basis for her second narrative feature, Go Back to China, which is currently playing in limited release (and, if you're in Chicago, is playing at Facets Cinematheque this weekend). The tale of a spoiled fashion school graduate (YouTuber Anna Akana) forced to return home to work at her father's (Richard Ng) toy company, Go Back to China is a slight, but extremely warm-hearted and incisive look at the cultural rifts between Chinese and American culture, and of the conflicting bonds of family and responsibility. Fitting with her personal connection to the material, Ting's approach is intimate and approachable, never veering outside the confines of artifice. She, with the help of winning performances from Akana and Ng (as well as Lynn Chen as the family's put-upon sister), maintains a laser focus on her characters' idiosyncrasies and the bone-deep resentments that they have to reconcile. Leading up to the film's wider release, I sat down with Ting to talk about the ways Go Back to China dovetails with her personal life, the challenges that come with directing a second feature, and the strides Asian-American cinema has been making in the past few years. Leigh and Ellie dive into Saving Face for this Lez-ssentials episode, a recurring segment on the essential movies and TV shows in the lesbian canon. Saving Face is a 2004 movie about a Chinese-American lesbian and her traditionalist mother who are reluctant to go public with secret loves that clash against cultural expectations. This film stars Joan Chen, Michelle Krusiec and Lynn Chen. Leigh and Ellie love this movie and have a lot to say about one of the few lesbian rom coms that we have with a happy ending. We talk about mother daughter relationships, societal expectations and forbidden love. I stumbled across Minka Brooklyn soon after moving to New York. It was one of those very Brooklyn places I was very thrilled existed and couldn't wait to check out now that I lived in the city. Aki, the founder was kind, nurturing, and sweet right off the bat. She gave me a tour of the space and a full treatment of Reiki and flower essences, both of witch I had never experienced. I knew immediately I wanted to now more about Aki, her story and the genesis of her holistic healing wonderland, Minka. We recorded this conversation a few weeks ago on a Sunday afternoon in her cozy office. We talked for hours on everything from holistic healing to her fascinating story of immigrating from Japan at 18, moving to New York, dealing with depression, motherhood, and entrepreneurship. We get into so many topics including dabbling in lots of different things, healing tools for depression, wellness, connecting to your true purpose, tarot readings, activism, self-care, masculine/feminine energies, flower essences, reiki, and so much more. Her advice on relationships is some of the best I've heard and there are so many wise moments throughout this. I know you'll love her throughout this long meandering conversation. Today, I'm diving in and digging DEEP with Nathaniel V. Dust, healer and founder of Breathwork For Recovery. Nathaniel has worked as a professional healer for almost a decade, using the power of a person’s breath as a catalyst for positive changes in clients’ lives. Equipped with an arsenal of techniques – with a special focus on breathwork – Nathaniel has helped thousands of people process trauma, disarm negative thought patterns, and maintain healthy and happy relationships with themselves and loved ones. And while his specialty IS working with treatment centers, it's not just substance abusers or people with eating disorders who are changed by his work: Nathaniel’s client base ranges from those seeking relief from everyday anxiety to people suffering from severe emotional and physical trauma who are desperate for help. Which is why I truly feel this episode is a MUST-LISTEN for everyone. Nathaniel will BLOW YOUR MIND with his dissection of trauma, his detailed account of his own recovery, and some alternative forms of therapy you might not have ever know existed (one word: HORSES). Also important: we talk about how to be acutely aware of your recovery journey, and if and when and HOW you can help others who are stuggling if you are still in the thick of it. If you feel unsettled trauma in your body...if you ever wondered if there was another way to heal...if you have ever been in a toxic relationship or known someone who has...then this is the episode you're meant to hear today. This is Part Two of THE RECOVERY MYTH: a new four-part miniseries by WANT sharing real-life stories, smashing open misconceptions, and shining a light on what recovery from an eating/body-related disorder or addiction REALLY looks like. I’ll be talking to experts, healers, and real-life recoverees answering some of the top recurring questions I’ve gotten from you over the last few years. Not just questions about recovery itself, but about the befores, the durings, the afters, and all the in-betweens that can sometimes seem like you imagined them. To be clear: the point of The Recovery Myth is NOT to prescribe a roadmap or provide a neat-and-tidy picture of what recovery looks like. The point is to dispel myths surrounding recovery and gain multiple perspectives to provide a more inclusive, holistic, and ultimately helpful view of what it looks like to go from the darkness into the light. ~~~~ Today on the recovery myth I'm talking to Lynn Chen, actor, host, blogger, and body image activist. If you've been following along for a while you probably remember her from episode 4, where we talked about learning how to accept what is, and then moving forward from there. Today, obviously, we're talking Recovery, but we get into some pretty unexpected topics that I feel like people just don't talk about when they're talking about eating disorders.
Ever since my friend Jess Murnane told me about Phoebe I wanted to be her friend. It wasn't until I met her in person for the is podcast that I truly realized how smart, funny, wise, and interesting she is. She's one of those people I could talk to for hours and in this episode I did. We recorded this conversation a couple weeks ago in Williamsburg, Brooklyn over cranberry kombucha. Phoebe recently wrote her second book book, The Wellness Project, which highlights so much of what I have been trying to integrate into my life over the past couple years: balancing healthy habits with enjoyment of life (or as Phoebe describes it health vs. hedonism). We also talk about the balance between being ambitious and letting things happen without pushing and about following your passion even when the path is unclear. On this week's episode, we have a special guest: musician Goh Nakamura joins us to talk about the films Surrogate Valentine and its sequel Daylight Savings, directed by Dave Boyle. In both movies, Goh plays a version of himself as he travels around the country on a music tour. Several women enter his life, including Lynn Chen playing his high school crush, Ayako Fujitani as an ex-girlfriend, and Jane Lui as a friend who catches his eye -- but it's him and Yea-Ming Chen, another real-life musician playing a version of herself, who seem to have the most natural chemistry. Goh tells us about how two non-actors rehearsed their way to become a believable onscreen couple. He also lets us imagine what it would've been like if his character was named Joe Nakamura. But best of all, Brian asks: um, didn't you guys tell us (your fans) in your Daylight Savings interviews that you wanted to continue the collaboration and do a part 3? If nothing else, this episode serves to remind everyone that it doesn't matter how many years it takes or many awards Dave Boyle wins, a promise is a promise. Saturday School is a podcast where we teach your unwilling children about Asian American pop culture history. Season 2 explores Asian American romance in film.

This is the time of year we’re the most contemplative about where we are in our own lives - and it’s for that reason I’m so excited to introduce you to today’s guest. Lynn Chen is an actress, activist, and food blogger who’s been seen in countless TV shows and films, serves as an ambassador for the National Eating Disorders Association, and has not one but TWO blogs. The Actor’s Diet, which Lynn started in 2009 as a sort of journal to help her make peace with her food after years of eating disorders, it’s now one of the most influential food blogs on the web, with some of the most longevity at that. AND, she’s got a podcast, the Actor’s Diet Podcast! Her other blog is called Thick Dumpling Skin, a phenomenal body-image blog that’s centered around the Asian American community. We ended up talking for close to two hours – Lynn shared so much of herself with me, and with us, that I really, really wanted to be mindful to do each word and thought and story and lesson justice. She’s in a majorly transitional time in her career right now, and that can be really scary – I went through the same thing multiple times – where you’ve pretty much built your identity being one thing, and then you decide to change directions from that. I don’t care what kind of career your in or what your life looks like, it’s something we all experience, but we usually hear people talking about it AFTER it’s happened. I’m honored Lynn opened up about this to me. We dive deep in this episode, but the one theme that kept popping up was learning how to accept what is, and then moving forward from there. We talk about the way blogging’s shifted over the last six years, Lynn’s choice to move away from acting and why success isn’t always what it seems, the lessons she learned while she was trying to get pregnant, and the unexpected strategy she’s used to cope with everything from the sudden death of her father a few years back to her long history with eating disorders. We also talk about rejection, comparison, and how to make your mark by being exactly who you are. It gets deep and it gets emotional and we both cry a little, but I promise, just like anything else with WANT, this is really about hope, taking what’s handed to you, and asking yourself, where can I go from here.
Lynn Chen - an indie film queen and TV regular (Silicon Valley, NCIS: LA) - and Nick talk Samuel L. Jackson's on-set chauffeuring, the intricacies of the waiting room, eating disorders, and whether sanity is essential for good acting. Also The Pajama Game. Tune in for a conversation with this mentally tough and exceptionally talented person. You can follow Lynn on her site, on twitter or at her food blog The Actor's Diet. Also go here for more info on the National Eating Disorder Association. Listen here or subscribe on iTunes or Stitcher.
Actress and blogger Lynn Chen joins the ladies in a great debate: how old is too old to couch crash? Rachael finds accidental love with boozy slushies and a shameful obsession with the latest season of The Bachelorette. Sara finds comfort in pajamas that make her feel like a New Girl, but can't get on board with Coach Taylor's latest project. The gross list features butt shots (not the fun kind), those who are all talk, and those opt out of TJ's bagging (seriously, what's wrong with you). And Lynn wins at 90s nostalgia with a very special TGIF story. Cut it out! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
