Differently: Assume the risk of creating an extra-ordinary life
Send Carla a message!Have you ever felt like your creative soul is crying out for space to breathe, but you can't quite hear what it's saying? This conversation with Katie Dalebout, author of "Let It Out: A Journey Through Journaling," might just be the permission slip you need to start listening.Katie's journey with journaling began during her recovery from an eating disorder when she intuitively reached for a colorful journal instead of another self-help book. What followed was a profound discovery—journaling provided a sanctuary where she could be completely honest about both her deepest fears and loftiest dreams without judgment. "It was the first time I was able to take all the masks off," Katie shares, "to just see who I was and get to know myself."The beauty of journaling lies in its versatility and healing power. Katie distinguishes between "maintenance journaling" (daily check-ins) and "SOS journaling" (emergency processing during life's challenges), comparing the practice to cleaning out a closet—things get messier before they get better. This metaphor perfectly captures why timing matters with journaling, as we sometimes need adequate space and energy to handle whatever emerges during the process. For creative souls, journaling serves as an essential tool for capturing ideas, making decisions, and maintaining creative momentum. Katie references Elizabeth Gilbert's powerful insight that "unused creativity is not benign," suggesting that neglecting our creative impulses leads to resentment and disconnection. "If I've touched a creative project daily," Katie notes, "I'm more pleasant to be around, more present, and more supportive of others."Whether you're a seasoned journaler, skeptical about the practice, or simply curious, this conversation offers fresh perspective on what putting pen to paper can truly do for your creative wellbeing. Ready to crack open your perspective on journaling and discover the wisdom already waiting within you? Grab your favorite pen—your future self will thank you.Links & Resources:Connect with Katie Dalebout:

This week on Wisdom Wednesdays, Rosie and Katie talk about the importance of embracing the changes in your life. We get different reactions whenever we look at old photos of ourselves. Some of us feel nostalgic, some feel embarrassed, and some are even in disbelief. It could be the old hairstyle, fashion choices, or even the way we posed for those pictures — all these remind us of our humble beginnings. They also remind us how things have changed. As many years passed, you've now embodied not just a different appearance but also varying views, opinions, and principles. My favorite thing about being a person is noticing serendipities. I’m often rushing or too focused on my plans to be present enough to see them. But every once in a while I slow down, let go of my plans, and insecurities, and am present enough to notice some sweetest of in humanity. To me today’s guest writer and illustrator Mari Andrew is an expert of this. She’s a present observer of her world, which is impressive in and of itself but then she has an impressive talent to take her keen observations and translate them into moving, specific yet relatable art. She’s a dynamic, warm, and articulate person artist who is oh so wise. Fittingly enough, we met serendipitously in our neighborhood in January—I told her how much her work meant to me and she agreed to do the podcast. In this conversation, we covered “rejection as protection”, her creative routines, money in NYC, feeling vulnerable and raw during times like breakups, transitions, and those make the ground fertile for growth, her specific way of practicing gratitude, and her useful body image advice. Coming from a small town in Michigan I didn’t know it was possible to move to New York but I did have the show Friends and watching really informed my decision to move here." "It’s so amazing that you can put on a song and it takes you back to a moment in time. And then that moment can become a different moment. Now I think about being in high school when I listen to certain 90s songs, but you can change the meaning of how a song makes you feel. And I find myself not wanting to play certain songs too much so I don’t change the meaning of them for myself."
Well you guys asked for it, so here I am reading out loud an article I wrote a couple months ago for The Fullest. It's about how my first hangover taught me self-care isn't just green juice and face masks, sometimes it's rest and cookies. It forced me into true intuitive eating when I had to listen to my body's cravings over what my dogmatic-wellness-obsessed-dieting mind would usually allow. Above all, the experience of being hung over made me realize how I prioritized a rigid self-care to-do list over people, creativity, and experiencing life. The entire situation showed me all forms of self-care should prioritize connection and presence over anything else. Most traditional self-care is solo, which can be great and really useful sometimes, yet other times it can be a way of hiding and isolating out of fear. I'm still learned how to decipher which version of self-care I need when. My default has become to isolate, and this article/ episode explores how I'm still learning my version of self-care now includes connecting and putting myself in an uncertain situations more that cozy certain ones. Plus, I give my likes and learns for the week, a giveaway, and more... Notes from the Show:Have you seen our Holiday Gift Guide? It's a rarity to have a repeat guest on the podcast, when someone returns it means I especially love talking with them. Kelsey's first time on the podcast (her very first podcast!) was in 2015 when her first book, her memoir Big Girl came out, then she was was one of the panelists on my firs live podcast episode in 2016, and now she's back with her newest book a retrospective on the show Friends called I'll Be There For You: The One About Friends. We obviously gush about our love and experience with Friends and how much I loved her book, but we also talk about where she is now in her life. Since she last did the podcast she got married and left her full time writing position at Refinery 29, so I asked her relationship and freelance advice. Recently she ended the column she founded at Refinery 29, The Anti-Diet Project which chronicled her experience, and the experience of others (including this essay I wrote) with intuitive eating and giving up dieting, so I asked her where she is with all of that now. Kelsey is eloquent, dynamic, and oh so articulate so I always love chatting with her and especially loved this conversation, which ranged from friendship to her writing strategies. Today’s is a long one but a good one with the very wise Seher. We met at The Wing last spring and recorded this conversation a couple week’s ago in her beautiful Brooklyn apartment. Seher is one of the smartest, most fascinating people I know. As you’ll hear in this episode she was born to Pakistani immigrants in the San Francisco Bay area, then attended Wharton for business, initially attempted a traditional corporate job, but ultimately became a freelance photographer. Now she views herself as an inter-disciplinarian; which we get into in this episode. We talk about leaving her corporate job, her transition to photography, learning a new skills, and becoming a music photographer. We talk a lot about family and navigating her very strict immigrant parents and a move across the country. We also get into mental health stigma, her depression and what helped her with it, including therapy and wellness and healing arts including qigong, and way more it’s a long one and a good one. And at the I do my new my L & L segment. I had the most wonderful time recording this conversation with human design reader Jenna Zoë. She's one of the most humbly confident and fascinating people I've ever met. She's one of those magnetic people you just want to be around, listen to, and become friends with. We sat in bathrobes on her hotel room bed chatting for almost two hours about not only human design and what that even is, but also her interesting life and how she got into it. Human Design is something I first heard about in 2013 when I met a human design reader and had a session. Soon after that I chalked it up to something interesting and perhaps useful, but didn't hook me enough to use it any further in my life. It wasn't until this year when I heard my friend, pervious podcast guest Lacy Philips, gush about how implementing Jenna's interpretation of Human Design, helped her feel articulated and improved her relationships--that I decided I'd look back into it. I had a session with Jenna and next thing I knew I couldn't shut up about it, I'd totally gone down the rabbit hole. In this episode, I ask her everything I was curious about in terms of what human design is and how it can be useful, I use myself as an example, and talk about how it can be used in relationships and parenting for understanding the people in your life better. It's such a sweet episode, I hope you enjoy listening as much as I enjoyed recording. When I first moved to NYC I kept hearing about the place in Soho--'I'd love,' I dragged my feet on checking it out, overwhelmed by the laundry list of places in the city, until one night I found myself there. My friend Nicole of Splendid Spoon hosted a dream decoding workshop at the space. As soon as I entered the space for the event I instantly understood why it had been recomended to me countless times. Eventually I figured out the space was owned by shaman and healer Deborah Hanekamp aka Mama Medicine and started following her work as well. It wasn't until I experienced one of her medicine readings after it was given to me as a gift that I fully understood her magic. Deborah is yes a talented healer with a beautiful aesthetic, but also a funny, grounded, extremely smart business woman, mother, and friend. I loved getting to hear her full, long story in this episode. I've been following one today's two guests, yoga superstar Kathryn Budig since I first started doing yoga in high school. She was my yoga idol. Over the years I've read her recipes, bought her books, and watched her talks. Today's other guest and Kathryn's now wife, sports journalist and author, Kate Fagan came into my life more recently when my friend Rose introduced me to their podcast Free Cookies a few years ago. Instantly, I fell in love with their dynamic, the subject matter they covered, their humor, and eventually their free relationship advice or as they call it, cookies. My love of them as a couple led me to get to know & love Kate and her work individually as well, in this episode we talk about the important book she wrote last year, What Made Maddy Run and her own impressive career as a sports journalist. I loved speaking with these two and could have talked to them for hours. We recorded this conversation just a couple days before their wedding, which is why it's a bit shorter than other episodes but think of this one like what they say about a mini-skirt--covers everything but will leave you wanting more. Unfortunately I didn't watch The Walking Dead and wasn't familiar with today's guest's music career before her team reached out about this interview--I'm now a fan. She was such a delightful, down-to-earth person with so much self-awareness creative spark. We talked about her experience moving away from her small town in the midwest to pursue her dream of acting and singing. We got into the on again, off again relationship that inspired her newest album Oh, Jonathan that just came out this month. Beyond her story and career we talked about her experience with therapy, body image, family, romantic relationships and breakups as well as her song writing and creative process. She gives some of the best creativity advice I've ever gotten on the podcast. She talks about the importance of boredom in her creativity and how her focus now is on being present and grateful for exactly where she is. This week I spoke with Dr. Robin Berzin about how she got started in medicine, working with Dr. Oz, and how she's now changing modern medicine with her practice Parsley Health. Her company is a new kind of medical practice, that provides access to doctors who provide patients a personalized plan which includes everything from supplements, and stress reduction to medications and cutting-edge testing. They integrate lifestyle, nutrition, and wellness into mainstream primary care through an annual health membership with their team of top board certified MDs who work outside of the traditional insurance model to insure they can actually spend time getting to know their patients. Beyond Parsley Health, Dr. Robin is a down-to-earth delight, she's a stylish busy mom, and in this episode she not only gives out some of her best wellness advice she also shares what she's learned about entrepreneurship, motherhood, and romantic relationships. I met Cat at The Wing recently and found out we have a lot in common, she also hosts a podcast, wears many hats, and we moved to New York the same month. After I had her over to my apartment a few weeks ago to record this episode, I realized we related to each other in even more ways than I expected. Cat is one of the most creative, driven, and motivated millennials I've ever met and more importantly she's warm, sweet, kind, and a delight to chat with. We talked about embracing natural hair, her Afro-Latina culture and identity including a new project she's starting related to it, and our millennial generation's best and worst tendencies. We got into her great tips for finding balance between creating and consuming social media, how to find time to for personal creative projects with a full time job and still maintaining relationships, self-care, and a life along side all the busy that brings. I’ve known Jess Lively for years, we both grew up in Michigan, and our paths overlapped there a few years ago. When we were both living there in 2016 we went to go see an Elizabeth Gilbert lecture about her book Big Magic and after over tacos we chatted for hours. Since then Jess has traveled all over the world in her own very Eat Pray Love-esque adventure and her life as changed so much. On that day we were both in an interesting places and I somehow shared with her off hand about Abraham Hicks over lunch, Jess ended up immersing herself in their work and implementing their concepts, along with many other teachers around the concept of law of attraction, manifestation, neuroscience, consciousness, and much more. She has a unique skill to distill heady esoteric content into practical terms. Most recently she's taken all of her work and created C-School, a live school in Australia where she now lives but is launching online this week. In this episode we talked about Death, loneliness, fear of not having enough time, body image and food, the law of attraction, time scarcity and time abundance, plus so much more. It was a different conversation than anything I was expecting and I loved every second. I met Mastin Kipp in 2014 at his book signing in Detroit. He told me then to stop consuming his work and the work of other self-help personalities and start focusing on my own creative work. Since then, I've done just that. I've spent less time developing myself and more time being myself as I am, or at least trying to. It was great to reconnect with Mastin and talk about the new direction of his work which is now mainly is focused on helping people go deeper into their emotional trauma and figuring out their purpose when they feel lost. We also talked in this episode about my compulsion of using spirituality and personal growth as "spiritual entertainment" without actually implementing it, we get into comparison, and the thin line between self care and self indulgence, plus he gives some of the best relationship advice I’ve ever received. I was unsure what to expect when I met Laura, I was connected to her by pervious podcast guest Camilla Ruth Marcus. I knew she was lovely via email, Camilla spoke highly of her, and that she had a thriving career in the NYC hospitality industry but that was about it. Days before our interview she sent me a keynote she'd given a few months prior. I read the 12 pages on a long train train and found myself fully weeping by the time I arrived at my stop. When I spoke to her in her cozy West Village apartment a few days later it was clear immediately she'd worked in hospitality her entire career. She is a host through and through, I felt so cozy in her space chatting with her about our fascinating story for hours. I loved learning about the hospitality industry, how she navigated a having rare cancer in the prime of her career, her experience with the medical industry, and how she used her cancer as a learning opportunity to discovering food as medicine, shifting her perspective on death, intuition, and listening to her body. We cover tips for those dealing with a cancer diagnosis, in the hospitality industry or wanting to be as well as for being a patron, networking, and seeing things from a new lens. I've been following Dr. Lipman for years--I've listened to countless interviews with him and read most articles he's written. In the days where I was overly addicted to wellness I'd scour the internet for the latests health information for hours falling down wormholes on what foods to avoid and super-foods to splurge on. Ironically, when I met Dr. Lipman in his office for this interview we didn't focus our time talking about what foods to avoid but rather we talked about how the healthiest thing we can do for ourselves doesn't have to do with food at all. With over 30 years experience as a medical doctor, he's discovered that when people have meaning in their lives they're often healthier. In this conversation, we talked about his fascinating life of moving from South Africa to the Bronx in the 80s to becoming a a prolific celebrity doctor and author. We also talked about how wellness movement impacts different generations differently and where he sees the future of wellness. There are few people I love following on social media as much today's guest. Dana Cowin's enthusiasm for food, career, and life as a whole are a delight. As editor in chief of Food & Wine Magazine for 21 years, a judge on Top Chef, a cookbook author, the host of the podcast Speaking Broadly, a chief creative officer at Dig Inn, just to name a few--on paper she's clearly extremely accomplished. In person however, she far exceeded her impressive resume she was present, welcoming, inspirational, wise, and warm when I visited her Manhattan apartment to record. Dana made us tea, gushed about her best friend Cheryl, and made sure I had a cozy pillow to sit on before diving into the interview. She was not only easy to talk to but allowed the conversation to organically meander wherever I led us. We chatted about female friendship, the evolution of food culture and her role in that, food culture and trends now, what a day in the life of a editor in chief is actually like, career transitions (Dana was EIC for 21 years before leaving in 2017), the power of story and her new love of podcasting, food as pleasure and connection, her advice to mentors and mentees, and so much more. I loved everything about Dana and it was a delight to have her on the podcast. I started listening to Trevor Hall back in 2009 when my yoga studio played him in a heavy rotation. His music soon made its way onto my own playlists when I started teaching yoga myself. After speaking with him this week on the podcast I learned that his career in the music industry had a tumultuous start which including getting dropped from his label, living in a monastery, and eventually making a hit album. Beyond his music he's one of the most wise, peaceful, and dynamic people I've met. We talked about music as a tool, meditation, surrender, learning vs. applying practices, saturn returns, using astrology for self-awareness, traveling, staying grounded, relationships as mirrors, culture, connection, indecisiveness, and more. I loved meeting Trevor as much as I loved listening to Lime Tree in yoga class in 2009 (which was a lot). In this episode of Fearless Rebelle Radio, I interview Katie Dalebout – speaker, life coach, author and blogger – on how to change your beliefs to build self-worth and trust using journaling, meditation and spirituality (in a non-woo-woo way!). In this episode, we chat about: • How Katie's obsessing with “health” turned into an eating disorder and how she recovered from this • The thoughts she had to challenge and change in order to break her food and body obsession • How the addiction of compliments makes it hard to let go of our “thinner” body • How to cultivate a sense of worth and fulfillment that's separate from the external things in our life • The importance of spirituality in her recovery • What “spirituality” really means and how to find it if you're not religious • Why journaling is such an important tool to help you change your thoughts • All about Katie's book “Let It Out: A Journey Through Journaling” that comes out in the spring • Plus so much more!
